#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

I got my first copy of HFGK in February’2015. After going through this ‘geet-kosh’ and movie details, I planned to take up this series. My aim was to introduce movies of this decade of seventies i.e. 1971-1980. It also offered me the opportunity of sharing my ‘nostalgia’ associated with the movies of this decade. Some of these movies were seen by me while others were not.
As for songs, there were songs that were well known during that time but were subsuquently forgotten with passage of time.
My main ‘goal’ was an ambitious one- to introduce all movies from 1971-1980 on the blog as soon as possible. I must say that we are still a long way from achieving this goal. Songs from some movies are no longer available. Some movies themselves have become so obscure that no information is available about then anywhere except in the geet-kosh.
Take the case of the year ‘1971’. There are around sixteen movies of 1971 that are yet to get represented on the blog. This number is from the movies which were officially released in 1971. Total 115 movies were released released this year , including movies which do not have any songs). The details of the list of movies will be discussed in the future posts as we progress on the blog and enter into ‘2021’. The next year ‘2021’ will be important from the point of view that it will mark completion of ‘fifty years’ for the movies released in ‘1971’ as the months progressed.
When we come to think of it, this year ‘2020’ is special for the movies released in ‘1970’ because those movies were released fifty years ago !
We will have quite a few such interesting details and observations in the future posts on the blog.

This movie is making its debut on the blog today.
Music of this movie was composed by music director Raj Kamal.
Today 1st September 2020 is the fifteenth ‘Remembrance Day’ of Raj Kamal (15.01.1921-01.09.2005).
Music director Raj Kamal has given us many unforgettable songs. Some of them can be described as ‘immortal’ songs in the history of Hindi films. Songs from ‘Saaz-1997’, ‘Katha-1983’, ‘Chashm-e-Baddoor-1981’ and ‘Saawan Ko Aane Do-1979’ etc. are still fresh in the memories of music lovers.
He also composed the music for B.R. Chopra’s epic TV Serial ‘Mahabharat’.
Here I am reproducing a brief about his biographical and career details as taken from a ‘Facebook page – Imprints and Images of Indian Film music’ (dated 31.08.2015, which was on his tenth ‘Remembrance Day’. The ‘Wikipedia’ page about him also has the same information, but in very short details).
Remembering Raj Kamal, one of the much talented and finest music composers of Hindi films, on his 10th death anniversary today.
Raj Kamal was a very talented and excellent music composer ln Hindi films. The songs he composed in films like ‘Saawan Ko Aane Do’, Chashme Buddoor and Payal Ki Jhankar are unforgettable classics and are cherished by innumerable music lovers to their hearts.He is credited with outstanding melodious compositions like “Chand Jaise Mukhde Pe”, “Teri tasveer ko’, “Tujhe dekh kar”, “Jaanam Jaanam”, “Bole to bansuri kahin”, “Tere bin soona more”, “Kajre ki baati”, “Tumhe Geeton Mein Dhaloonga”, “Gagan ye samjhe”, “Patthar se sheesha” ( all from ‘Saawan Ko Aane Do -1979), and “Kahan Se Aaye Badra”, “Kali Ghodi Dwar Khadi” (“Chashme Buddoor” -1981), “Dekho Kaanha Nahin Maanat Batiya (Payal Ki Jhankar-1980) and “Kya hua kya hua kya hua” (Katha-1983).
Other than films, Raj Kamal has composed music for TV serials like Mahabharat Katha, Bahadur Shah Zafar, Vishnu Puran, Ma Shakti and B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharat. He has also composed music for a Malayalam movie “Aazhi ‘ (1984).
He was an accomplished singer too. As a playback singer, he has rendered songs like “Maine Tumko Hi” (Phulwari – 1984), “Tum Sundar Ho” (Katha -1983), “Gunje Gunje Re” (Akhand Saubhagyavati -1982) and “Jaane Kyu Hain” (Jazbaat -1980).Raj Kamal was born to Tulsidas and his wife in a village called Matoda in Rajasthan. He was named Dalpat after birth. He was the eldest of 5 children. After marriage, Raj Kamal and his wife Sagar had 6 children — Chandra Kamal, Surya Kamal, Vinay Kamal, Hriday Kamal, Shubh Kamal, and a daughter. Raj Kamal’s three elder sons are all composers and musicians in their own right. Soon after Raj Kamal joined the industry, he changed his name from Dalpat to Raj Kamal.
Raj Kamal was a man rooted to the tunes and songs of the soil. He came to be closely identified with the Rajshri’s, their films were made for largely family audiences, people who wore a dhoti at home and trousers to work. Raj Kamal was able to build to tap into their unexpressed longing for ‘watan’, ‘des’, as many put it. Yet sustained success eluded him in later years and but for television series Mahabharat and Bahadur Shah Zafar, his resume would not have made for an impressive reading, films like “Amma”, “Chashme Buddoor” and “Katha” notwithstanding.
Raj Kamal died at the age of 77 on 1st September 2005 from Alzheimer’s Disease which had severely affected his memory.
Though he has not composed too many songs in his career, Raj Kamal has left behind a rich legacy of classic scores in few films that will always be cherished and enjoyed.
Going by the ‘filmography’ of music director Raj Kamal mentioned on various sources I guess that the today’s movie ‘Dost Aur Dushman-1971’ must be his first movie as ‘music director’ in Hindi films. (HFGK doesn’t mention anything about this so I may be wrong?).
However, I would request knowledgeable reader to correct me and throw light on his musical journey.
“Dost Aur Dushman-1971” was directed by Chand for ‘Shivparas Productions, Bombay’. It had Shiv Kumar, Heena Kausar, Jayshree T., Sapru, Murad, Tabbassum, Kundan, Roopali, Uday Kumar, Neelam, Sunita, Joginder, Junior Mehmood and I.S. Johar.
This movie had four songs composed by Raj Kamal and written by Asad Bhopali. Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle and Hemlata had given their voices to the songs in this movie.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 10.12.1971.
This movie seems to be an obscure movie of its time. However thankfully many songs from this movie are available on internet sources.
I would also request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.
