#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # # Dhan Daulat-1980#

Today’s song is from the ‘1980’ movie ‘Dhan Daulat’. I never watched this movie in those growing years of mine. And later also I did not get any opportunity to watch it on video or elsewhere. I had noted that this movie was made available on an OTT platform, may be few months back, but now it has been removed from there due to ‘rights’ issue. Moviegoers and music lovers are aware of the most popular song from this movie i.e. the song ‘jeenaa kyaa ajee pyaar binaa’. I too remember to have frequently heard this song either on radio or loudspeakers then. From the remaining songs of this movie the song ‘ho jaaye phir us din kaa jo waadaa hai’, & ‘khudkushi karne dil mein iraadaa kar liya maine’ are also familiar to me. I became aware of the song ‘shikwaa na tumse koi’ when it was posted on the blog under the blog ten-year challenge in 2020. The fifth song from this movie is the song under discussion. I do not remember to have listened to this song before corona years 2020. I have been listening to this song many times ever since and I ave like this song very much.
‘Dhan Daulat-1980’ was directed by Harish Shah for ‘Shilpkar, Bombay’. It was a movie from a ‘social’ genre movie and its producer was Vinod Shah. The cast of this movie has Rajendra Kumar, Mala Sinha, Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Prem Chopra, Premnath, Pran, Sujit Kumar, Madan Puri, Agha, Sajjan, Kirti Kumar, Azad, Ranveer Raj, Shyam, Amal Sen, Amarnath Mukherjee, Birbal, Yusuf Khan, Master Sandeep and others. Kader Khan, Daljeet Kaur, Preeti Ganguly, Asit Sen, Jagdish Raj, and Master Raju had a guest appearance in this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 07.01.1980. Story of this movie was written by Sachin Bhowmick and its dialogues were written by Sagar Sarhadi.
As mentioned above ‘Dhan Daulat-1980’ has five songs, which were all written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by Rahul Dev Burman. Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Master Raju had given their voices to the songs in this movie. Two songs from this movie have already been posted on the blog.
No song from this movie ‘Dhan Daulat’ featured in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of that year 1980. May be because this movie was not a successful movie and it is now ranked at number fifty-seven among the top grossers and successful movies of the year ‘1980’ as per IMDB. The movies up to the rank of forty-five are considered at successful movies there. The story of this movie ‘Dhan Daulat-1980’ offers nothing new and it is a familiar story that we have watched in many Hindi movies.
Here is a brief about the plot of this movie which has been mentioned on sources on internet.
Raj Saxena (Rajendra Kumar) and Vasudha (Mala Sinha) love each other and want to marry. But Raj’s parents oppose to it and Raj is forced to abandon Vasudha, but he is not aware that she is pregnant. Vasudha gives birth to a male child and leaves him in a truck (so this child grows as ‘truck ka phool and not ‘dhool ka phool’). The truck driver duo Mangat (Premnath) and Bajirao (Pran) bring this child to their home and look after him dreaming of growing up him to a good person. They give him a name ‘Lucky’. Lucky grows up as a street-boy and do all mischievous things, be it his studies or in general in and around home (as is typical for a ‘Bombay-street-boy’ Hindi film hero then).
One day Shanti (Neetu Singh) is passing through Lucky’s house where he is locked by his father duo, but Shanti didn’t help him out. Now Lucky is after Shanti and soon develops a liking for her. Once incidentally Lucky meets Vasudha who is running a small shop. Some hoodlums troubled Vasudha and destroy her shop. Lucky brings Vasudha to his home. Lucky wants to marry Shanti. But Shanti’s father (Madan Puri) dislikes Lucky as he has no ‘status’, no family background and do not have job and in turn money too. Vasudha, Mangat and Bajirao suggest Lucky that he will have to stand on his own, so he starts a business of ‘match boxes’. His rival in business is his own father Raj Saxena, which Lucky is not aware of. The rivalry in business takes extreme turns where finally Raj succeeds in ruining the business of Lucky. Meanwhile Lucky comes to know that he was adopted by Mangat and Bajirao and they are not his parents. Vasudha also hears their conversation but could not come into open and telling Lucky that she is his mother. Lucky understands that he needs to earn money ‘by any way’ to be a successful person and to marry Shanti and took the revenge of his insult by Shanti’s father. He had once stolen the horse of Sujit Chopra (Prem Chopra) to impress Shanti. After knowing this Sujit got interested in Lucky. Lucky joins hands with Sujit Chopra who is in the business of ‘illegal businesses’ to amass wealth.
At this turning point in Lucky’s life Sudhir Chopra who is hosting a party welcomes Lucky to the new world of wealth and glamour, drinking and womanizing. This is also the situation where we have the today’s song played on the screen. We have Daljit Kaur (as Party singer) lip syncing for Asha Bhonsle’s voice and Rishi Kapoor (as Lucky) lip syncing for the voice of Kishore Kumar in this wonderful song. The composition by Rahul Dev Burman is a vibrant and energetic composition giving the perfect tone of celebration, enjoyment, and excitement of a new beginning in world of glamour and wealth.
What happens in the end of this movie ‘Dhan Daulat’ is anybody’s guess, so I am not discussing that here.
I was holding this song for a special occasion like anniversaries of the composer of this song i.e. Rahul Dev Burman, or the lyricist of this song i.e. Majrooh Sultanpuri. But somehow it could not be materialized so far. Today’s occasion may not be that special, but it is a special occasion to look forward for me (not for money but in search of the wealth of ‘musical treasure trove’), and today’s song is a song which motivates and suggests moving forward instead of dwelling in the past. So I am presenting this wonderful song here today.
This song may not be a well-known song but I feel that it deserved to be a well-known song coming from Pancham. The songs starts with notes of ‘pa pa paa aa paa paa aa’ in the voice of Asha Bhonsle. Pancham Da had already been doing the experimenting with the wide range of Asha Bhonsle’s voice in those years and had started the trend of warbling using monotonic notes at different intervals in a song where the lyrics could not fit into properly in the meter of the song and to bring back the song to main tune e.g. in the songs like ‘jab andheraa hota hai’ (Raajaa Raani), ‘dekho mujhe dekho’ (Hamshakal) etc*. In the today’s song we find Pancham Da using the ‘bossa nova’, incorporating changes in the scale while shifting between the voices of Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar instead of using instruments as would have been in normal cases. The rhythm, beats, percussions, strings, chorus in this song has been blended well in music by Rahul Dev Burman. The lyrics by Majrooh Saab are also excellent. And that makes this song a ‘gem’ of a song which could not get the well deserved appreciation.
As mentioned above none of the songs from ‘Dhan Daulat-1980’ had featured in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of the year ‘1980’. Though songs composed by Pancham from the movies ‘Naukar-1979’, ‘Abdullah-1980’, ‘Golmaal-1979’, ‘Kudrat-1981’, ‘The Burning Train-1980’, ‘Jurmaanaa-1979’ find a place there. Topper of the annual Binaca Geetmala 1980 was ‘daflee waale daflee bajaa’ from ‘Sargam-1979’.
Let us now enjoy the song where the lyrics give us the similar feeling of the situation of the song ‘mud mud ke naa dekh’ from the movie Shri 420.
PS: The video of this song is found removed due to copyright issues now. It was there a just a day before.
