Today is the 15th of August ֠a date that has a very special meaning and significance for all Indians, wherever they may be in this world. For it was on the 15th of August 1947 that India got its independence from British rule.
This date is therefore understandably celebrated by Indians. It is a national holiday in the country too.

Such a day is also a good moment to reflect on the state of the nation. What its achievements are, how it has got to where it is, what its aspirations are, and what needs to happen for it to meet its aspirations.

Before I do my bit of reflection along these lines, my mind goes back to Independence Day 1972.

I was then in primary school. As usual, Independence Day was a holiday but there were events lined up by the school to celebrate the day. There would be the usual flag unfurling by the Chief Guest, there would be a March Past at 7.00 or 7.30 a.m where we would salute the flag as we marched past it. Later that day, there would be some sports events, mainly athletics.

Like most of my friends, I would enjoy the day. Dressed in uniform but wearing white canvas shoes, it was a day of great joy and pride for all of us. When the flag would be unfurled and all those petals would come down, we would all heartily clap and our chests would swell with pride.

This would be the school routine every year. I specifically remember and mention 1972 because I remember it was the Silver Jubilee year of independence and we had even more activities and events lined up that day. The mood was very upbeat ֠the war against Pakistan had been won in December 1971, so this was the first Independence Day after that achievement.

(Of course, a year later, the OPEC financial crisis happened and inflation went through the roof. A couple of years later, Emergency was declared and the 70s in India suddenly began looking different. I was too young then to understand the rationale or significance of these events, though I did notice the price of Coca Cola significantly going up. But even at that young age, since I used to read the newspaper (The Statesman) regularly, I could notice changes happening, even if I didnӴ understand why.

The other non-school related elements of Independence Day used to have a comfortable ritualistic feel about them. The Prime Minister would address the nation, there would be patriotic songs played on radio. No radio programme on Independence Day was complete without airing ԫar chale hum fidaa jaan-o-tan saathiyonԮ We didnӴ have a TV in those days but later when we did get one, we would see the Doordarshan film on Independence Day.

Those memories still linger on in my mind, although forty years have passed since. The rituals continue to this day ֠even today, the PM of India addresses the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort in Delhi. Even today, All India Radio plays patriotic songs on Independence Day. Even today, there is the flag unfurling ceremony and there are March Pasts all across the country.

Even today, in schools, there must be excited children waiting for Independence Day, wearing bright white canvas shoes and waiting excitedly for the Chief Guest to unfurl that flag. The players are different, the rituals are still much the same.

This is part of tradition now. And, whatever our reservations about a whole host of things, I am glad that we still perpetuate these traditions, at least for the sake of the youth and children of this nation. They need to grow up with a sense of pride and belief in their country ֠and these rituals, though they may only be symbolism, help in building this sense in them.

Later in life, as they discover more about their country, they may not have quite as rosy a picture of it as in their childhood. But I think every child deserves to live with pride in his country and hope for its future. It is harder to find a sadder spectacle in society than a disillusioned and embittered child. If a child has no hope, society has no hope.

This now ties in, even if somewhat uncomfortably, with my reflection on the state of the nation.

This is not a political post (this is a song blog!), so whatever I say here is completely non-partisan. My views are about the country as a whole, not about any political party.

It would not be unfair to say this this is one of the most sobering Independence Day celebrations that weӶe had in a long time. I thought last year was sobering enough, but this year seems to be a notch lower in terms of peopleӳ moods and spirits. If last year, cynicism had entered the public mindset and found its place, this year its roots deepened as it firmly entrenched itself across the national psyche.

If we cast political correctness aside for a moment, it is not hard to see where this cynicism is coming from. Every day when we open the newspapers (or read news on the net), itӳ not difficult to see that thereӳ not exactly a whole lot of good news to read about, is there?

From bad economic news (rising inflation, rising fiscal deficit, falling rupee, falling industrial production) to bad governance news (rising crime, increasing corruption and scams) to the rising risk to internal security (thanks to an increasingly fractured social fabric due to religion-based or deprivation-based divisiveness), there is not very much for Indians to feel good about their country right now.

Many Indians today have no trust in their government or in their institutions, be it the police or the judicial system or the media or any other institution. There is a sense of lack of accountability across the board for those in power and in positions of responsibility. And, at the same time, a sense of helplessness amongst those who have ironically vested in these powerful people this power.

While this is sadly understandable, this is clearly not a healthy situation. Many Indians will be celebrating this Independence Day with a hollow feeling within. I have already had people telling me Էhatӳ there to celebrate?Ԯ Some are even questioning whether they are really independent. Their feeling is that they may have got freedom from British rule but are not being ruled by a different set of rulers, albeit Indian.

My mind often goes back to our Founding Fathers and to those who fought for freedom from the British. What struggle they must have gone through. So many of them sacrificed their lives. So many spent years in jail. Even when they did wrest independence, India was a very fragile newborn. There were communal riots and a lot of tension. There were 500+ kingdoms to be united as part of the same nation. There was rampant poverty. There was rampant illiteracy.

Despite all this, those Founding Fathers persevered. They had a dream, they had come this far in getting independence for India, they were not going to slacken their efforts. Although Gandhiji died soon after independence, the rest took upon themselves the task of building the country in right earnest. They came up with the Indian Constitution, which in itself is a tremendous achievement and the basis for running the nation.

If they were alive today and could see the state of the nation, how would those Founding Fathers feel?

I feel as a people, we are all answerable not only to those of our times but also to those who will follow in future generations. Our children and grandchildren will inherit the India that we leave for them. Just as we inherited the India that our Founding Fathers left us with.

We are answerable not only to future generations but also to our Founding Fathers. Have we done justice to their dreams? The famous words, as if spoken by our Founding Fathers, Ԉum laaye hain toofan se kashti nikaal ke, is desh ko rakhna mere bachon sambhaal keԠring in my ears. And I cannot help feeling somewhat ashamed that we might just have let them down.

Sure, we have come a long way. It is not just all doom and gloom.

Overall, we have far better literacy, far better lifespans, far better standards of living than ever before. India today is counted among the more powerful countries in the world, even if it is still tagged (as it was way back in 1972, when I can recall this tag) as a developing nation and not a developed nation. And very importantly, inspite of the occasional threat to it, we are still a proudly pluralistic nation.

And we are still a vibrant democracy, where we have (at least on paper) a choice in who we elect to represent us in Parliament.

But all this is not enough. There is still a long, long way to go. And all of us know it. There is no point in fooling ourselves.

Now, we can keep complaining about all thatӳ wrong with the system and in the country. But the fact is that we ourselves are responsible for the society and nation we build. Each society builds itself, it is not built from outside. We need to stop blaming the British (they left the country 66 years ago) and look at ourselves.

In a sense, we are both the problem and the solution. We havenӴ quite taken proper care of the country that our forefathers fought so dearly for. And yet, only we can solve our problems.

I believe it starts with a belief that we can ֠and will ֠stem the rot. If we give up, saying Ԯothing can be doneԬ the battle is already lost. Sure, the problems facing the country are huge, but they are not insurmountable. As an independent country, India is only 66 years old ֠and in the lifetime of a country, this is nothing. You could even say much of what has happened is part of the churn from a colonial mindset to an independent, confident mindset.

Following on this belief, there must be a strong desire, a burning passion to change. Passion does strange things ֠it makes people far more powerful than they think themselves capable of being. If everybody just wants to run away from the problem (Ԭet somebody else fix itԩ, we deserve whatever mess we get.

Following on this belief and passion, we need a community spirit. There is only so much an individual can do. Even Gandhiji, for all his belief and passion, would never have succeeded if he had not got the support of the millions of Indians who went along with him. And this spirit must cut across all the barriers that we have placed on ourselves ֠barriers of religion, of caste, of class, of language.

And then of course, action. Finally all this has to culminate into a series of actions that will deliver us the India we dream of. It is not enough only to discuss or to write books ֠we need to translate all this into action. And though we have our unique issues, I do think it would help perhaps to learn from experiences of other nations. What do they do well that we donӴ? Itӳ important to keep an open mind and learn from others.

I could go on and on but I think IӶe said enough for now. Itӳ already become a long post and my intention was not to get preachy in any way. Maybe I got a bit carried away, my apologies. This is only a song blog, not a platform for me to spout my philosophies. :-) That is another discussion on another platform.

So let me then get to the song for today.

It is a song that is very much in line with my thoughts above about the Founding Fathers of this country.

It is a very rare NFS (a non-film song) by Rafi saab sung especially for the occasion of 15th August.

The lyrics of this song have been provided by Avinash Scrapwala. IӤ like to thank him for this ֠what a wonderfully inspiring song this is. We need more of these type of songs to be played out every day so that people remember their legacy and feel a sense of responsibility towards the nation.

Through this song, Rafi saab exhorts the people of this country to remember the sacrifices made by all those during our freedom struggle. Not just the leaders of the time but even the common man and woman.

Of course there were the leaders of the time like Gandhiji, Pandit Nehru, Sardar Patel, Netaji and others. There were freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad who laid down their lives in their fight for freedom. But there were also many unsung heroes and heroines among the common men and women of the country. They sacrificed, they went to jail, they gave up all they had ֠all this for the dream of being a free country.

Today we are a free country. And despite everything thatӳ not quite right, this freedom is something that we hold very special to our hearts. It allows us to hold our heads up high. It allows us to express our opinions freely ֠something that we were not allowed to do during colonial rule.

Yes, let us all appreciate the value of this freedom. And make it count. We owe it to our generation, we owe it to our future generations, we owe it to the Founding Fathers of our nation.

‘Dil fidaa karte hain, Qurbaan jigar karte hain’

“Even if I have to face death a thousand times for the sake of my Motherland, I shall not be sorry. Oh Lord! Grant me a hundred births in ‘Bharat’. But grant me this, too, that each time I may give up my life in the service of the Mother land.’

These inspiring words come from none other than the great revolutionary and laureate Shri Ramprasad ‘Bismil’.

Today is the 87th martyrdom day of Pandit Shri Ramprasad Bismil. He was hanged to death in Gorakhpur Jail on 19th Dec 1927.

He was only 30 years old then.

He was born to Shri Muralidhar and Smt. Moolmati at Shahjahanpur (U.P) on 11th June 1897.

He learnt Hindi and Urdu and also joined English medium school in spite of his Father’s disapproval. He also learned Sanskrit and Bengali. In his School days he came in contact with the ‘Arya Samaj’. Simultaneously he was also writing poetry and was a talented poet. He translated some Bangla books to Hindi also. Some of this writings include ‘The Bolshevik Programme’, ‘A Sally of the Mind’, ‘Swadeshi Rang’, and ‘Catherine’. All of his poems have intense patriotic fervour in them.

He and his associates raised a revolutionary organisation to fight against the British Imperialism in India. To strengthen this organisation they required funds, for which they looted the government treasury which resulted in the famous Kakori Train Conspiracy. This jolted the British Empire and soon the Britishers were successful in arresting the key members of the Hindustan Republican Army except Chandra Shekhar Azad who remain un-caught till his end.

Ramprasad, Ashfaqullah, Roshan Singh and Rajendra Lahiri were awarded death sentence after trial in the court. They were kept in Gorakhpur Jail, where Ramprasad wrote his autobiography and completed it just three days before his hanging.

He was confident that the sacrifice made by him and his friends would not go in vain and there would be many more to follow in their wake ;
मरते ‘बिस्मिल’ ‘रोशन’ ‘लहरी’ ‘अशफाक’ अत्याचार से ।
होंगे पैदा सैंकड़ों इनके रुधिर की धार से ॥

His last words addressed to fellow countrymen are also very much important and relevant forever;
“देशवासियों से यही अन्तिम विनय है कि जो कुछ करें, सब मिलकर करें और सब देश की भलाई के लिए करें । इसी से सबका भला होगा ।
“My last request to all countrymen is that whatever they do, do collectively and in the interest of the Nation. This will be beneficial for all”

Years have passed by since these revolutionaries sacrificed their life for our freedom. Today we breathe in the free air of an Independent country and it has been 67 years since we achieved our freedom. Lot of changes have taken place during these decades and our stature as a country has also changed during these years. Lot of scientific and technological advances have taken place since the colonial rule. Globalisation and other international compulsions have affected our political as well as social life. Media and Social media, other than the entertainment industry are playing a huge role in capturing the minds of the young generation. It is essential that this young generation are made aware of the sacrifices made by the martyrs of pre independence days who sacrificed their present for the future of this country.

Though our Priorities as a Nation have changed, the basic problems related with development and overall social development still remain to be addressed.

At this juncture it is essential for us to revisit our goals and objectives as a nation, and take a collective and united stand to decide how to fulfil the dreams of our founding fathers and these great revolutionaries who made the highest sacrifices to see ourselves free. And more importantly we have to resolve to act in ‘National Interest’ and not for satisfying personal goals of some people.

I could glance through just few pages of the digital version of his autobiography and would like to mention a few key points which can be a source of inspiration all of us;
– Ramprasad’s family suffered a lot when he was a child, and later on the young Ram Prasad also suffered a lot as he grow and fight with the British Empire still against all odds he continue his struggle and made this highest sacrifice for the nation.
– He has mentioned in his autobiography about how he overcame his bad habits and several distractions coming in his way. Also how he took up ‘bramhacharya’ (celibacy) and practiced it.
– He had the highest regards for his Mother who according to him taught him, inspired him and made him what we know him today.
– He has mentioned his gratitude for all his ‘Gurujans’ and all who helped him and motivated him and all those who influenced his life for betterment.
– In His biography he has given the details of his life from his childhood to landing in jail. Three days before his hanging he had completed the autobiography and given to his Mother and his friend Shiv Verma in the lunch box which they had brought for him.

(I tried to get some of his books and though ordered a few, I could not get them before finalizing this post. However we have one more chance to discuss his poem which is there in the film ‘Aandolan’ 1975, and there we can discuss more details about him.).

Ram Prasad Bismil (11 June 1897 – 19 December 1927) was an Indian revolutionary who participated in the Mainpuri (1918) and Kakori (1925) conspiracy cases against British Empire. He was also a patriotic poet who wrote with the pen names of Ram, Agyat and Bismil in Urdu and Hindi but became popular with the name ‘Bismil’. Ram Prasad Bismil was one of the founder members of the Indian revolutionary organisation Hindustan Republican Association. Bhagat Singh praised him as a great poet-writer of Urdu and Hindi. About this film ‘Azadi Ki Raah Par’ – 1948, I got to know about this title from the list of films mentioned in the ‘filmography’ in books on Sahir Ludhianvi’s poems and songs. (It was the very first film of Sahir Saab as a lyricist in Hindi movies)

I noticed this song (uploaded very recently) appearing in the suggestions on YT with one of the G.M.Durrani songs.

“Bhai Bahan”(1959) was produced and directed by G P Sippy. The movie had Rehman, Johny Walker, Naaz, Daisy Irani, Nishi etc in it.

Five songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the sixth song from the movie. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. It is lip synced by Baby Naaz. Rehman and Nishi are also visible in the picturisation.

Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by N Datta. This movie also has an additional stanza in it that apparently was not picturised. This stanza many or may not exist in the audio of this song.

Four songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the fifth song from the movie. This song is sung by Rafi. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by N Datta.

This is a rare song and only the audio of this song is available. According to Rafi excel sheet, this song is picturised on Bharat Bhushan.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala. The has in fact went through Sahir Ludhianvi’s coetry compilation (Gaata Jaaye Banjaara) and found that the song had an additional stanza at the end as well which was not included in the song. “Be imaan” (1972) had bagged as many as seven filmfare awards, and that included the best actor award for Manoj Kumar for his performance in the film.

No Manoj Kumar film was released the next year. In 1974, Manoj Kumar hit the jackpot with the blockbuster ‘Roti Kapada aur Makaan’. ‘mehangaayi maar gayi’ of this movie toped the ‘Binaca Geetmala’ final list and the film was ranked no.1 at the ‘box office’. This movie was followed by ‘Sanyasi’ in 1975. Some songs of this movie were popular during its time. The film also turned out to be a hit ranking 5th in the list of ‘top Hindi films of 1975’.

The Manoj Kumar movie of 1976 that hit the movie halls was produced by Madan Mohla.

In his career, Madan Mohla produced films like ’Aasra-1966’, ‘Sharafat-1970’, ‘Raja Jani-1972’,’Humlaa-1992’ and ‘Chhupa- Rustam-A musical thriller-2001’. Except the 2001 film ‘Chhupa Rustam …’ all his films have music composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. While I am not much aware of the box office performance or musical performance of ‘Aasra-1966’, one song from ‘Sharafat-1970’ –‘sharafat chhod di Maine …’ was very popular. ‘Raja Jani-1972’ was a ‘hit’ and its songs had been popular too.

Of the films Madan Mohla produced, ‘Aasraa-1966’ was directed by Satyen Bose, ‘Sharafat-1970’ was directed by Asit Sen, and ‘Raja Jani-1970’ was directed by Mohan Segal.

For this 1976 movie, Madan Mohla teamed up with his regular music composers Laxmikant Pyarelal and his regular heroine Hema Malini (‘Sharafat’ and ‘Raja Jani’). He signed up Manoj Kumar as the hero of this movie.

This movie was the first and only occasion where Madan Mohla directed a movie in his career.

The film turned out to be a Hit and its music was also popular.

This movie was ‘Dus Numbri’!!

The film had Manoj Kumar, Hema Malini, Pran, Bindu, Premnath, Kamini Kaushal, etc. Produced by Madan Mohla and Pradyuman Mohla and Directed by Madan Mohla, it was written by Dhruva Chatterjee and S.Ali Raza.

As far as my vague memory allows me to remember, posters of Manoj Kumar wearing the classic ‘goggles’, the ‘beret’ hat, the jersey having number 10 on it, and jacket worn over it, is what immediately comes to mind when this movie is discussed.

The film was ranked seventh among the top hit films of 1976 (no.1 was ‘Kabhi-Kabhi). As per information on ‘wiki’ – The film was the top hit of 1976. The film ranked #10 for the 1970s decade and is also ranked #47 among all time hits.

To recreate the nostalgia and bring back memories of ‘moviegoers’ and for those who grew up in the ‘seventies’, today we mark the debut of this film on our blog.

Earlier I had thought about introducing this film with another song from this movie. However when I shared two title songs from the 70’s viz. ‘Kahaani Kismat Ki’ and ‘Fakira’ (which fall in my favorite category of ‘philosophical’, ‘song with a messasge’) I thought that I should share this title song of “Dus Numberi” too.

BTW, we tend to have a title song in a typical Hindi movie. My personal feeling is that this trend was there in majority of the films produced in the Seventies (regulars of the blog can correct me/share their comments on this), and many title songs had been popular also (here ‘title song’ means having the ‘title name’ in the lyrics of the song’)

‘Dus Numbri’ was released on 17th April 1976- exactly 38 years ago. I think I must have watched it during the summer vacations then, and since the film was a ‘hit’, it must have at least 100 days or 15 weeks run at the theatres as it used to during those years.

Today’s song stood 10th in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of that year and it was the only Laxmikant Pyarelal composition among the top 10 songs on Binaca Geetmala that year. In fact this was the only Laxmikant Pyarelal composition among the top 20 songs of Binaca Geetmala that year. The next popular song from the movie, viz. ‘mujhe dard rehta hai, dil mein dard rehta hai’ s stood 24 th in the annual Binaca Geetmala ratings of 1976.

Dus Numbri was Manoj Kumar’s last major hit before ‘Kranti’ came in 1981. (in 1977 there were two Manoj Kumar releases ‘Shirdi Ke Sai Baba’ and ‘Amaanat’.)

Those who have watched ‘Pehchaan’ and ‘Be-imaan’ would find the picturisation of Part-II of this song similar to ‘sabse badaa naadaan wahi hai’ and ‘Ek ek ginwaata hoon’ (which is yet to be posted on our blog), which happens to be at party/function, where Manoj Kumar challenges and takes on the corrupt-big-wigs in the society, and the pseudo-seculars, pseudo-socialists, and the hypocrites of the society, and threatens to expose them.

Let us enjoy Marjrooh Saab’s words, Laxmikant Pyarelal’s composition and wonderful singing of Mukesh Saab. This is a title song that was meant to be a “timepass” song but the song has managed to remain dormant in the recesses of one’s memory. Listening to this song certainly brings back memories of 1970s for those who had lived through that era.

So here is this title song of “Dus Numberi” (1976)- A movie that was released exactly 38 years ago !

“Maasoom” (1960) was directed by Satyen Bose for Bani Roop Chitra. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Sarosh Irani, Aziz, Honey Irani, Anuva Gupta, Manmohan Krishna, Mohan Choti, Chaman Puri, Bhagwan Sinha, Keshto Mukherjee, Master Nissar, Jeevankala, Gautam, Bir Sakuja etc in it.

This movie was made on the topic of children and it had some nice songs in it. One song from the movie, viz. Naani teri morni ko mor le gaye has gone on to become a timeless classic.

This movie itself was a heartwarming movie that won the hearts of the movie goers. The movie was nominated for the best film category. It did not win that award, but won the Filmfare award for best story (for Ruby Sen).

Two songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the third song from the movie. The song is sung by Sudha Malhotra and it is picturised on Sarosh Irani, a young kid who is seen earning an honest living by acting as a coolie. It must be kept in mind that the concepts of political correctness in day to day lives of people had yet to take root. What is depicted in this song will be considered child labour today which has been outlawed now but such concepts were not known there those days. Even otherwise, one cannot say that child labour has been abolished. Children from underprivileged and deprived backgrouns have to labour hard even today, notwithstanding laws against child labour.

This song is written by Sahir Ludhianvi and the lyrics of the song talks of the glory of earning an honest living through one’s own hands instead of resorting to unlawful acts. Our hards are our fate and we would rather earn our living through them than to beg for alms- this is the lesson of self respect that this song conveys.

Robin Bannerji is the music director.

Today (1 may 2014) happens to be Workers’ day or Labour day. Though this day is ordinarily considered a day for workers belonging to organiser labour organisations and excluded unorganised labour and also mangement, I do not think one should take such a narrow view of Workers’ dayin today’s circumstances. Everyone who is engaged in any activity, whether manual or non manual activity is working, and all of them must be considered as workers.

I will not call this song a Workers’ day song. This is an inspiration song and a song with a message that is valid on all days of the year and not just on one particular date of the year. And as mentioned earlier, this song is meant for all individuals, and not just for organised labour.

It is with mixed emotions that I write this post.

No, it’s not quite what you’re thinking. Usually “mixed emotions” involve an element of happiness, tempered with sadness. Like parents sending their son or daughter abroad for higher studies. On one hand, they’re happy for their child’s future, on the other there’s an element of sadness that they will be separated by a considerable amount of distance and time.

But in my case, the component in the mix is not sadness. It is tremendous guilt.

Yes, on one hand, I am very happy to be writing this post as it marks a double milestone for the blog. On the other hand, I am riddled with guilt at not visiting this blog quite as often as I’d like to. It is something I need to set right.

And I am glad to be back here today. Like I said, this song celebrates a double milestone for the blog. When Atul sent me an e-mail a short while ago, telling me about this and asking me if I could do a write-up for the occasion, I immediately jumped at it. I’ve always considered it an honour to write a post here – and although I’m in danger of being dubbed the “milestone” guy – I do enjoy every occasion to write a post here, even if most of them have only been “milestone” occasions.

Onto the milestones.

First of all, this is the 9800th song on the blog. Yes, that’s the NINETY-EIGHTH hundred song of the blog. When one puts it this way, it is natural to think of that mega milestone that we should be hitting in the near future. It is almost upon us and is only a matter of time now.

In cricketing terms, this blog can now be said to be not just in its “nervous nineties” (which it has been for a while now), but “just one shot away” from the magical number.

But in reality, while in cricket, that one shot (or two runs) can be got in many ways, sometimes through a lucky edge or Chinese/French cut, there is no such short cut for this blog.

Every single one of the remaining 200 songs (to get to the magic milestone) will have to be worked on – song by song, with the rigour involved in listening to the song, writing down the lyrics, getting the song-creators’ details and preparing a write-up to introduce the song to the public.

And this is the process that has happened for every single one of the 9800 songs so far. No short cuts, no compromises. Anybody who knows Atul even a little bit knows that he is uncompromising in his approach towards quality and thoroughness. And that is definitely one of the things that differentiates this blog from many other song/film sources out there. Here, while we celebrate quantity, it is never at the cost of quality.

So 9800 cheers then to Atul for bringing this blog to where it is today. The rest of us have been happy travelers on this journey, contributing (and I bite my lip a bit, trying to hide my guilt, using this term) from time to time, some more regularly than others (Oh, Mother Earth, open up and take me in your grasp!).

Now onto the other milestone.

Not only is this the 9800th song here, this song also happens to be the 800th song of our beloved Kishore Kumar here on this blog.

Yes, isn’t that just so wonderful? 800 songs now for Kishore da here. I feel SO honoured and humbled to have the opportunity of posting this song in very fond memory of him.

We’ve often discussed Kishore da here. I have myself done a few write-ups on various occasions remembering him. But however much we discuss him, I never get tired of talking about him. (I have the same with Rafi saab too).

Kishore da was, to me, the ultimate all-rounder. He did everything –acting, singing, writing songs, composing them, producing, directing – he did them all. He entertained the public, in whatever capacity he presented himself to them.

In cricketing terms (sorry, I tend to use cricket analogies a lot – I hope you don’t mind), to me, he was the Gary Sobers of Hindi cinema. Totally dependable – you always knew you had something to look forward to when you knew Kishore da was associated with a film.

Speaking personally (and I’ve said this before), I grew up with Kishore Kumar songs.

My first recollection of him was with the songs of “Aradhana”. I was very young then – not only was the film a massive hit, but the songs were an absolute rage. I don’t remember how many times “mere sapnon ki rani” and “roop tera mastana” played on radio in those days. But it felt like either one or the other was playing every day, in some programme or the other.

As it turned out, that was just the start of Kishore Kumar’s staggering rise to singing stardom. Of course, he’d been singing for two decades before this – and had sung many a lovely, and even popular, song – but had never quite caught mass public imagination or received mass public adulation like he got, once the songs of Aradhana clicked.

From then on, it was just one song after the other. He kept on rolling out hit after hit (many of them benefiting Rajesh Khanna) – and I, as a kid, was happy to keep lapping them all up. During that period, regardless of whether the movie was a hit or a flop, Kishore Kumar’s voice ruled.

In school, we’d often sing his songs – “musafir hoon yaaron”, “o maajhi re”, “o mere dil ke chain”, “dil aisa kisi ne mera toda”, “meri bheegi bheegi si”, “aadmi jo kehta hai” – and so many others, each of us trying to sing in that baritone voice, trying to outdo the others.

Yes, those were fun days, full of music and songs – and I have to thank Kishore Kumar for playing a big part in giving me those songs that made up my childhood.

At that time, I was caught up in that period – the 70s. Later, I got to listen to more of Kishore’s older songs – and the more I listened, the more I loved them. I totally fell in love with “piya piya piya”, “wo dekhen to unki inaayat”, “meri neendon mein tum”, “chhoti si ye duniya”, “mere mehboob qayamat hogi”, “khwab ho tum ya koi haqeeqat”, “jeevan ke safar mein rahi”, “chhod do aanchal zamana kya kahega”, “ajnabi tum jaane pehchaane se lagte ho” – and so many others from generations earlier to mine.

Then there was Kishore Kumar the producer/director. It is ironic that the man known best for comedy could produce movies as sensitive and touching as “Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein” and “Door Ka Raahi”. Surely there was a facet of this man’s character that had somehow never been allowed to be presented to the public by other producers, so he chose to make these films himself, to present this other side of him? I am glad he did – he was too talented to be straitjacketed by anybody.

Let us now move onto the song for the occasion.

Today’s song is a Kishore da song from a 1983 film – Katha. Starring Deepti Naval, Naseeruddin Shah and Farouque Shaikh.

Now normally 1983 is not a year I remember particularly fondly for cinema.

If I remember right, by then, we’d started seeing the oft-spoken about 1980s decline. Whether it was the disco rage, or the not-so-naturally-culturally-fitting remakes of South Indian cinema, or even the mighty Amitabh Bachchan’s movies of the time, none of it quite appealed to me.

Besides, I was also quite busy with my studies at that time and didn’t have too much time to watch random films of questionable quality.

So I hardly watched many movies of that period – but two movies that come to mind are Ardh Satya and Katha.

I haven’t seen Katha since – so my recollection is of over 30 years ago – but I recall liking it a lot at the time.

With a cast like Deepti, Naseer and Farouque Shaikh, it is hard not to like a film. But besides that, I remember it was a sweet sort of film. Naseer is the shy neighbour of Deepti in a chawl, unable to express his feelings to her while the smooth-talking Farouque Shaikh manages to weave his way into her life and heart. Naseer can only look on. Given my age at the time, I could easily identify with one of the male characters (no, not the smooth-talking one).

This song “maine tumse kuchh nahin maanga” is one that I don’t recall top of head but Atul sent it to me today. And when I heard it, I couldn’t help feeling that it is a very different type of song. Its composition is anything but traditional. And yet, thanks possibly to the instruments used and Kishore’s voice, it is very pleasant to listen to.

This unconventional tune is composed by Raj Kamal. I remember first hearing his name with “Sawan Ko Aane Do”, a fairly popular mid 70s movie, best-known for its title song. Raj Kamal did not compose for too many movies but he does have to his credit the music for the very popular BR Chopra produced Mahabharat series of the 1980s.

The lyrics are pure Hindi – and written by Indu Jain. I notice that the Indu Jain – Raj Kamal combination also produced songs/music for Chashm-e-Baddoor (also a Deepti-Farouque starrer), so that was a partnership that could have delivered more, if they’d chosen to be more prolific.

The picturisation is on Naseeruddin Shah and Deepti Naval, though it is a background song playing on a record player. I don’t remember this part of the movie but I’m guessing Naseer is imagining Deepti to be in love with him.

Listening to the song, I couldn’t help feeling that it must have not been an easy song to sing. It does not have the usual predictability of tune, it has pauses at unusual places, it has intonations in places. And yet Kishore da, being Kishore da, breezes through it all.

Am happy to pay tribute to him for his 800th song on this blog. He will always be in our hearts. And his songs will always be on our lips.

Today we remember Mohd Rafi Saab – the ‘divine and soulful voice’, on his anniversary!!
My tributes to this great great great voice, a gentleman, and a humble human being, as he is known to all- Shri.Mohd Rafi Saab !

While I was working on finding the songs of ‘Pancham-Rafi Jodi’ since last nine/ten months so far and reading various posts/articles on our blog, I read some posts which mention about the so called ‘lean period’ (1971 to 1976 (or 1974?) of Rafi Saab where the quantity of Songs sung by him is said to be decreased.
For anyone of us it is hard to believe that something of this sort was possible!

Now this so called ‘weak period’ of Rafi Saab’s is cited from 1971 to 1976 so far. And it is said that he made a comeback in 1976 with Laila Majnu. (Whereas some people think he had already made a comeback with ‘teri galiyon mein na rakhenge kadam’ for Hawas in 1974)

What was going through my mind was when did it would have been actually started from? – The decline! Or the weak period for Rafi Saab!

Does the decline started with Rafi Saab singing one song for some movies and that too with the Music Directors whom he already had some great work done earlier and with whom he had a longer association so far?

Some songs easily come to my mind e.g. 1971 Haathi Mere Saathi – he got that ‘nafrat ki duniya ko chhodkar’ (which left everybody watching the movie with tears in their eyes) (HMS ranked at the TOP at the BO that year).
Music for Haathi Mere Saathi was by Laxmikant Pyarelal who has been so far given many hit numbers of Rafi Saab.
Then ‘Abhimaan’ in 1973 where Sachin Da composed the music and Rafi Saab had only one duet with Lata in that film.(Abhimaan ranked 18th at BO)

This is just my estimation and we cannot really judge what would be the circumstances then.
Similar thing must have been happened with other Singers also (and some of these types of songs must have been posted on our blog too).

Take this example of ‘Mehboob Ki Mehendi’ in 1971 where Rafi Saab had 03 solos and one duet, while Kishore Kumar the voice in demand had only one solo. (This movie wasranked 24th at the Box Office)
This was the peak time for Kishore Kumar in those years.

What I can conclude is that Rafi Saab was very much there and he also had sung a good number of songs then, only the films he sung with either performed badly or were in non-Rajesh Khanna movie.

May be, but Rafi Saab continued to give us memorable song till he was there. And I have come across some very good songs from this period up to 1980 which I have noted and which I will share in future.

While this was going through my mind, there was this song in the program ‘Rangoli’ on Doordarshan.

‘Zamaane ki aankhon ne dekha hain yaaron’ …

As I go through this meaningful song the lines repeatedly came back to me and symbolically I start to relate this song with Rafi Saab’s going through that phase at that time ….

This is from the 1972 film ‘Ek Baar Muskura Do’.
Songs sung by Kishore Kumar from this movie were very popular and we are aware of them. Now what about other songs from the movie?

The film had total 07 songs, out which Kishore Kumar had four songs – 03 solos and one duet with Asha Bhonsle. Mukesh had two songs – 01 solo and 01 duet with Asha Bhonsle.

Rafi Saab had one song!!

With O.P.Nayyar being the music director and Rafi Saab singing just one song!

During my recent communication with Pradeep ji when we were appreciating each other for our ‘love for music’ and I mentioned about how I feel fortunate to have a company of people like ‘Team Atul members’, I write to him that “I always thank god to get me connected to people like you and others in our team ,

It is all by destiny :) and our ‘musical karmas’”

In reply to this Pradeep ji wrote to me;

“I like the term “musical karma” :). One of a very well known HR trainers that I know here (he also has a filmi connection, he acted as Manisha Koirala’s father in the movie Bombay), once told me that I would describe you and me as “Rasikas of life”, I liked that term too.. So we are all Rasikas of life and music :)”

So when today some of our team members – ‘the rasiks/rasikas of life and music’ will get together and have a ‘musical meeting’, I wish they all enjoy this post and song to celebrate this occasion there”

Though I could not make it to this wonderful meeting I wish them all a very happy gathering there. And, for a change I will put it as ‘mere dil mein bhi sahi aur tere dil mein bhi – jalti rahe geet sangeet ki aarti’

Music for all of us is a part of our life, or should I say it is ‘religion’ for all of us, or may be more than that.

It is also a positive force that keeps us going and a good healer too.

It may not be everything for us, still it is there with all aspects of our life.

And above all it is‘worship’ for those who love music and those who are connected with it in some other way.

So, in our offerings of prayers to the goddess ‘Saraswati’ I sincerely wish that long live this blog and continue with the musical journey forever …

All of us love music and we are attached to it for various reasons. For me, it is an ongoing activity which rules my sub-conscious and conscious mind every time.

It motivates me a lot. It acts like an inspirational force for me.

It has been almost since my childhood that I was addicted to Radio for listening songs and as I grow, that continued and the addiction also grows more with collection of cassettes, now collection CDs, getting done recording of songs, searching for rare songs etc etc.

So, music is always there with me in my day to day life.

When I was a bachelor the ‘mono cassette recorder’ with me use to start early morning, in fact I used to rise from bed straight to put on a cassette to play (starting with ‘bhupaali’/devotionals, and then moving for brush and tea preparation.

Then, till I left for office it would continue to play and I would start the music again when I would come back from office which would continue till I went to bed. The cassette player had to be auto stopped (usually) as I went to sleep while listening to the songs/albums for that day.

Then, as I joined distance education and I used to study and do assignments at home, I used to listen to music during the breaks of my study or when I wished to take some jigs on my favorite songs. (to ‘unwind’ as they put up nowadays).

After getting active with this blog, it has become my daily routine to share some songs either on daily basis or if not sharing them then preparing for the songs to be shared, or searching for the songs that are in my memory since years back and while searching if I find something new (in our case the terminology is ‘old and rare’) then sharing them.

So music is continuously going on in my mind.

At work also whenever I get break or get time to think during intervals I am thinking of songs that are yet to make it to this blog.

Further in today’s stressful life we face many different situations time to time , a music lover like me always finds songs to face the situations, get out of it – if it is a troubled situation or enjoy and celebrate or cheer – if it is something positive that is happening or when I am getting success in any of my assigned tasks (of work or of personal interest).

When I am in my daily travel it has now become habit to check for the notifications of the new posts on this blog (on mobile phone), and comment if the song is already familiar to me, and if not, just to keep updated about the new posts.

If I am away from my base-station (Atulology), then also I regularly check for the new posts on my mobile so it keeps me updated as what new posts have come up and if I get time to read the posts I generally comment or congratulate then and there if we finish songs for any single movie or like that.

Few months back, we had to rush to a place about 475 kms away from my base station, as my elder daughter was hospitalized due to sudden illness. When she was hospitalized and her colleagues were with her (and she was out of danger), instead of starting back immediately, we decided to move on early morning next day as it was already late at that time . So I had time to take all my favorite albums with me.

However on the first day the ‘music system’ was under the control of by my younger daughter so we have to listen to mostly the newer songs.

The next two days were more hectic and there was no scope to listen to songs, though prayers were going on in our minds. After my elder daughter was discharged from hospital, my wife and younger daughter accompanied her and stayed at her Hostel room to give her support.

When everything was settled we decided to visit an Aashram on the banks of Narmada River in the Narmada district near Rajpipla. This is the place which we visit at least once in a year and I always wish that I get more chance to visit there and can spend a longer duration there. Well this time we were getting a night stay there and most importantly getting a darshan of Swamiji.

Darshan of Swamiji is possible only few hours starting late night.

As my younger daughter stayed back to support her Didi at the hostel, I and my wife left for the aashram.
Our travel has to be for at least 3 hours one one side, so there was enough time for me to get on with my favorite songs too.

One of the albums that I carried with me was ‘Immortal melodies from Navketan Films: Vol.2-Philosophical’ (SA re ga ma – Bombay Talkies)
(Few years back I had got this one album from a famous online store)

As the playlist proceeds one by one, this song appears!

When the word by word fall on my ear I was relating it with our daily life, the daily activities that we perform and finally we search some time for leisure, some time to take us off from the hectic life, some to time to unwind ourselves…

But now it has become difficult, because, as far as I am concerned I get very less time to play my favorite CD/DVD’s, to listen all the cassettes that I have collected over these 29 years so far. Sometime I get angry with myself for the job I have taken and for the circumstances I have created for myself which give me very less time for myself.

But nonetheless, songs are playing all the time in my mind and what if I cannot listen to music on the CDs or Cassettes, I keep humming different songs according to the changing situations that I am faced with at that juncture in my life. That way I remain connected to music all the time.

The song under discussion today says it all for me. All I can pray to God that ‘sukh dukh mein aap sadaa hamaare saath rehna, aur man ke mandir mein sangeet ki jyot jalaaye rakhna’ (I remember the very first time when I met Swamiji he asked me what more I wished from the Gods as he had already given me a ‘happy life’, so he advised me that whenever I pray to God I should only ask HIM to ‘be with us in our ‘hard times’ as well ‘when we are sailing smooth’)

Next step for me was to find this song on YT and share on this song blog. On YT only the audio of this song was available. So I decided to go for the VCD of this film and watch it too, to get details about this song and about the film.

So, I got the VCD of this film ‘Main Tere Liye- 1986’ (from my regular online store).
(Year of the film on the cassette is mentioned as 1986, while myswar.com and IMDB mentions it as 1988)

Here is this brief about the film:

‘Main Tere Liye’ was produced by Dev Anand under ‘Navketans’. This was directed by Vijay Anand. And the Story-Screenplay and Dialogues were also written by him. Music for this film is by Bappi Lahiri and lyrics are also by Vijay Anand. Except this Bhajan which is penned by Neeraj ji.

The film’s starcast includes Suneil Anand (son of Dev Anand), Meenakshi Sheshadri, in lead roles, with Rajendra Kumar, Asha Parekh, Marc Zuber, Shashi Kala, Om Shivpuri, Punit Issar, Gulshan Grover, Gautam Sarin, Sudhir, Sudhir Dalvi, Mushtaq Merchant, Birbal, Bhagwan, Jr.Mehmood and Vikas Anand.

I think this was a ‘flop movie’ and forgotten easily and by that standards can be termed as an ‘obscure’ movie also.

Suneil Anand performs Guitaar in a club also named as ‘Guitaar’. His father Sudhir Dalvi is a Music Teacher.
Suneil falls in love with Meenakshi, but beaten up by her brothers (who are not her real brothers as revealed later) Punit Issar, Gulshan Grover and Sudhir. Om Shivpuri and Shashikala are the main villains. Shashikala has an affair with Om Shivpuri which she hide while marrying Marc Zuber (who is a Captain of a ship and mostly out on the sea).

Asha Parekh is a widow and a nurse and has a daughter, and takes care of the medication of Marc Zuber on the instance of Rajendra Kumar who is the friend of Marc Zuber. However a ‘wrong’ pre-planned injection (by Om Shivpuri) kills Marc Zuber while he suffers a stroke. Finally Rajendra Kumar is proved guilty and sent to jail.
Vijay Anand tries unsuccessfully tries to repeat the ‘twists and turns’ ala ‘Johny Mera Naam’ at the end of this film where the control shifting between the good and the evil.

Finally the Good wins and everything is Ok.

This song happens when Suneil Anand is beaten up by the villains – Punit Issar breaks his hand- (Na rahega haath Na bajegi Guitaar) and Suneil cannot move his hand. His father in the film Sudhir Dalvi while nursing his hand sings this song on screen with his ‘shishyas’ and later on Suneil’s friends joining to it.
In the film, only the mukhda of this song is repeated again when Sudhir Dalvi is killed by Om Shivpuri and taken for his final rites.

Rinku Sagar is the sole heiress of an estate and wealth. She lives with her uncle and aunt, Makkad and Anjana Saxena respectively. They plan to get her married to one of their sons, sign over the estate to him, leave her penniless and divorced, and they themselves plan to live comfortably for the rest of their lives. What they do not know that Rinku’s mother is alive, and she will do anything to protect her daughter, if necessary even kill. For, Rinku’s mom is a former convict, having served time for homicide.

I believe that all of us, the ‘music lovers’ have our own reasons for being attached to ‘music’. Some of us definitely have some specific reasons that keep us to be continuously in pursuit of ‘songs’, and some of us have some special memories to cherish with, and cherish those special moments with some sort of ‘musical memories’ attached with them. While going through many posts on the blog and some of the comments I have noted that most of us like to mention about the ‘songs that bring back memories’.

We fondly cherish and remember such songs and enjoy them and try to revive those memories.

Trying to find out these special songs, that I hear up while growing, was the main reason that I started to contribute lyrics of the songs that were still to be posted on this blog.

But when I noticed that many songs from my list of ‘Aaya hai mujhe phir yaad wo zaalim’ (title I thought to give to this compilation when I recorded them) were still to make to this blog, I became uncomfortable and was eager to see these very special songs on the blog, because ultimately this was a ‘unique’ blog and the songs I mentioned definitely deserved place on the blog – since these were the songs from the very special period of the Hindi cinema – ‘the Seventies’….

I still do not know how many of these will be there when we reach at 10,000!!!

But one thing is sure that there are still many from the ‘seventies’ that will be coming here in future days to come …

Now we have one of those songs from the ‘seventies’ as the 9972nd post on this blog!

And, yes, this post is dedicated to those special songs that have left indelible and permanent mark on our mind and have remained evergreen as well as immortal for us.

Now talking of the memories that some songs triggers, we actually do not know how some songs become permanent fixtures in our mind and become part of our life at various stages.

Like, my parents told me that, when I was a child, my uncles and aunts teased me with the song ‘Wo pari kahaan se laaun – ye gangaram ki samajh mein naa aaye’ from the Manoj Kumar starrer ‘Pehchaan’. My physique at that time must have provoked them to give me this name ‘Gangaram’. Then these songs ‘deewaana mujhsa nahin’, ‘bainyaan na dharo’, ‘duniya mein logon ko’, bring this ‘Gramohpone’ and ‘LP’ records to my mind, because my Uncle had brought this LP record player then, and these songs were regularly played on them and were everyone’s favorites (I think so).

And I do not know how this song ‘teri galiyon mein ham aaye, dil armaanon bharaa laaye’ became part of my permanent memory, even though I have not watched this film ‘Minoo’ then and till date. May be because it was frequently played on the Radio then.

As far as memories related with the musical programmes on Radio is concerned, I remember one special – ‘ Fauji bhaaiyon ke liye …’Jaimaala’ ‘ on Vividh Bharati, presented by Dharmendra. I remember him describing himslf as ‘main ek kisaan ka beta hoon’ and playing this song ‘apni kahaani chhod ja.. Mausam beeta jaaye’ I listened to this song for the first time then and I was taken over by this song.

Then there was ‘Bianca Geetmala’ which was an eagerly looked forward programme of everybody in the family. Listening to the annual programs of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ was an event which is a part of our beautiful memories.

I vividly remember the annual Binaca geetmala program of 1979. I was given the responsibility to listen to and note down the rankings and final results since my parents had to go for their ‘drama rehearsals’. ‘Dafli waale dafli bajaa’ from ‘Sargam’ had topped the charts that year.

From ‘All India Radio-Urdu Service’ programmes my favorites were ‘bheega bheega pyaar ka samaa bataa de tujhe jaana hai kahaan’, ‘raahi matwaale’ and ‘ham pyaar mein jalnewaalon ko’….

And if you are fortunate enough to have been fallen in love with someone at an early age, (may be a one sided crush and an unexpressed love (‘Atulogy-dil to hai dil dil ka aitbaar), ‘apun ki zindagi mein bhi ek ‘memsaab’ thi , kya ! aayen!) and if you are separated from this ‘childhood’ love for some reasons , you have plenty of songs in our Hindi films that we can relate to our real life situations and where one can fall and swim in the depth of the ‘poetic beauty’ of the lyrics.

With the advent of new technologies, a vast treasure has opened up for music lovers like us and I can list out the following from my experience of searching songs online; according to me this is how this ‘journey of life through songs’ takes place.

There are some songs that get stored in our very early memory,
There are some songs that trigger memories when we review the above category songs, There are some songs that are not in our memory but they are related to that period and they remain hidden in our vague memory, There are songs that strike us on situational, seasonal basis, incident basis, on changing weather conditions, time, and/or our mental and physical condition given at a time.

There are some songs that remain in our permanent memory and they live with us, they grow with us (here growing meaning the understanding of the verses, relating our emotions to it and the physical properties of the song i.e.its tune, its singing, its recording, its picturisation etc etc).

There are some songs that get stored in our sub-conscious memory and some get carried over through our conscious day to day life experiences.

Our personal likings for some actors, actresses, stars, of any film personality. And last but not the least is the ‘nostalgia’ that we all love – and looking for something that have been left back over the years.

Seasons and Festivals also trigger some musical memories, like;

During Ganesh festival this song ‘he gajvadan Ganesh ji , meri binti suniyo re’ keeps haunting me, and I searched it for many many years, finally thinking that it must be a NFS, I started searching that way, but thanks to our beloved Prakash ji who shared us this beautiful Bhajan.

Every Janmashtami I am automatically reminded of these songs;

Around Diwali festival, I used to get feeling of Diwali vacations that we enjoy during our childhood and these songs start haunting me;
Main na bhoolunga, Ye jo public hain, Ye hai mera premi.

I presume that I associate these songs with Deewaali because I watched the movies containing these songsin october at around Deewaali time.

Over the years I cannot escape the magic of ‘Sun jaa aa thhandi hawaa’ and ‘Jaadugar tere naina, dil jaayega bach ke kahaan’, ‘tum mile pyaar se mujhe jeena gawaara hua’ and ‘waada karo jaanam, na chhodoge ye daaman’, whenever I listen to it.

With ‘ya garmiyon ki raat jo purvaiyya chale, thhandi safed chaadaron pe jaage der tak’.. I try to find the ‘fursat ke raat dins of our ‘childhood’, in our today’s life wherein we get very less time to unwind ourselves.

And the all time favorite ‘zindagi ke safar mein guzar jaate hain jo makaam’…. Whenever I feel like going back to the memories and places, which I have been and left behind later.

One born in that period of ‘seventies’ cannot forget these quawaalis, which also were the favorites in Orchestra programs;
Jhoom baraabar jhoom sharaabi, Raaz ki baat kehdoon to, ‘chadhta sooraj dheere dheere dhalta hain dhal jaayega’, ‘taarif teri nikli hain dil se’….

And I remember that almost all orchestras then compulsorily have these numbers;

So when our beloved Atul ji has discussed this in his numerous posts about the ‘best age i.e. 8 to 14 yrs, of which the memories we carry with us, piqued my interest and I thought to analyze this ‘science’ in my case.

And I would like to share the results here.

For this I decided to list out all the songs that straightway appeal to the senses. Whenever I get to listen to them, they touched my heart; a strange feeling of going back to those days brings goose bumps to me and leave me in a state of mind that cannot be expressed in words.

These are the songs which give me an altogether different feeling whenever I listen to them and they remind me of the special memorable time of our life i.e. childhood which will not come back again.

Looking back now it feels like that was a ‘different world’ altogether!

All these songs are from the films that belong to the period before I was born.

I do not know but these songs have captivated my mind since I was a child.

Also, while going through Atul ji’s post on the blog (for those songs already posted from the list) I find it interesting that many of these songs (in my list) are common favorites of both of us.
As Atul ji is elder to me by six years it would be interesting to know – what emotions and feelings go through his mind while listening to the same songs.

The timeline in my case is from 1968 (I was born) to 1982.

I was also interested to find what exactly the results are in my case. And while I started with focusing on the prominent songs that bring back memories, I finished with listing all the songs, to get a better picture.(and later on I might add some more songs to the list, if I find that has been missed now).

Out of these songs links for those already posted on our blog are given therein. And for the balance ones they will be updated whenever these songs are posted on the blog. Where I have multiple songs from the same film, I have considered only one for this analysis’s purpose. So from the total of 211 songs I have considered 174 only with one each from a film. Now in many cases even the movies that these songs are from have not been watched by me. And I am trying to get these now like I watched ‘Pehchaan’ in 2007, ‘Abhilaasha’ in 2011 by getting their VCD/DVDs. I don’t know if now VCD/DVD for those movies that failed at the box-office, would be available or not.

This list of songs that I started writing down in 1994 (in my diary and separate notes prepared from time to time) was there with me and it was last updated in 1998.

Getting back into it was very enjoyable and interesting.

And while doing the analysis I find years like 1974,1976 having more songs that I like, so I have put them separately and spread over the age range in more categories and not covering all of them in one range of 8 to 14 yrs.

The maximum numbers are from 1976-1982 – 68 songs (i.e. 39%), and the highest from a single year are 17 from 1974, 1976 & 1977, then 14 from 1973 and 12 each from 1975, 1971 and 1970 and 11 from 1978, making a total of 112 (from rest years the figure is less than 10).

For this special post I had only two songs in my mind the one is ‘Yaadon ki baaraat nikli hai aaj dil ke dwaare’, since I was talking of the memories, however I strongly felt like selecting this one for expressing my love for those days and here the ‘Yaaraane’ ( :) ) is with those beautiful years and those sweet memories.

Yes this is the song from the 1976 multi-starrer, dramatic, thriller Nagin.

‘Tere sang pyaar main’, ‘tere ishq ka mujhpe’, ‘tere mera mera tera… mil gaya dil dil se’ and this one to complete the ‘T’ series songs.. However this song starts with ‘hafte mahine barson nahin’.

Composed by the magical duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal and sung by the soulful Rafi Sahab and Lataji this song and its tune has the fragrance of the music of that time. It creates magic. Its picturisation is also beautiful where the handsome Feroz Khan and gorgeous Mumtaz are performing it on screen. Lyrics are by Verma Malik ji.

After getting in touch with this blog I had been learning more about Verma Malik ji and his songs that he has penned so far for Hindi films.
Also though the tune may sound as a simple one but I think this bears the signature touch of the music of ‘Laxmikant-Pyarelal’.

When I had already finalized this song and prepared its lyrics, the film was there on TV channel recently and I get to watch it.
Watching it after so many years was thrilling and living that nostalgia again.

However I was surprised to note that none of this film’s songs made to the annual Binaca Geetmala list of that year. Not even the popular ‘tere sang pyaar main’. One can easily imagine how the competition would have been tough where ‘Kabhi kabhie mere dil mein’ top the list and ‘kee gal hain koi nahin’ was at 33 and at the bottom of the charts of the annual Binaca Geetmala list.

“Society”(1955) was produced by Ismat Chugtai and directed by Shahid Latif for Film India Corporation, India. The movie had Nimmi, Nasir Khan, Johny Walker, Ifthikhar, Kumkum, Radhika, Minu Mumtaz, Bikram Kapoor, Protima Devi, Amar, Munnan Bai, Haroon, Munsi Munaqqa, Nazeer Kashmiri, Arvind Kumar, Md Ali, Dubey, Sagar, Jerry, Chandrakant, Akkan, Tuntun, Peggy etc in it.

Today (25 october 2014) is the 34th death anniversary of Sahir Ludhianvi. Here is a song from “Society” (1955) on this occasion. This song is sung by Geeta Dutt, Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.

Only the audio of this song is available. Going by the sounds of it, the song appears to be a club dance song, which may have been picturised on Kumkum or Minu Mumtaz. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

In fact, we take as much pride in the authenticity and accuracy of this information as we take in the accuracy of our lyrics. Information contained in some of these writeups are like gold dust- valuable and scarce and collected with care.

But these writeups too can have errors in their contents which are pointed out by our knowledgeable readers and they are then corrected.

One thing is for sure and it is that we do not blindly copy information unlike many sites and we try and crosscheck information from other sources, if possible.

It turns out that sometimes even extremely reliable sources too may contain incorrect information which tends to go unnoticed for considerable time before they get noticed almost inadvertently.

What can be more reliable than HFGK as well as label on records ? It turns out that even they can sometimes have errors. One such error has just come to my notice and that too rather fortuitously.

Yesterday (6 novermber 2014), Avinash Scrapwala sent me an unusually long email. In this email, he shared his observations about the various songs of “Jeewan Jyoti”(1953). One of his observations was that one of the songs “so ja re so ja meri ankhiyon ke taare” is shown in myswar as a Lata solo but he has found the same song sung by Geeta Dutt too. He mentioned that he has found an Asha Bhonsle version of the song (audio only) as well. Subsequently he found a Lata-Asha Bhonsle duet version (audio only) of the same as well. And that is not all. The Lata version of the song seems to get played in the movie on multiple occasions making it a multiple version song.

I was quite intrigued by the above observations. When I consulted HFGK, the matter became even more complicated. I found that the song is described as a solo song which was sung by Lata in the record version and Geeta Dutt in the movie version. The HFGK remark is not correct because the video of Lata version (or rather multiple versions) are readily available and they are integral parts of the movie, just like the Geeta Dutt version. So the fact that Lata version was not there in the movie is required to be corrected in HFGK.

As far as the Asha Bhonsle version of the song is concerned, HFGK mentions it in the annexure IV that the Asha Bhonsle version of the song was a “version” song and it was not a part of the movie. Likewise the Lata-Asha Bhonsle version of the song too has to be a “version” song though this fact is not mentioned in HFGK in its annexure.

Avinash Scrapwala shared another information about another song from the movie. He mentions that the song Man sheetal nai sufal…najar lag jaaye na is not mentioned as a Sahir Ludhianvi song in the book “The People’s Poet” (by Akshay Manwani), even though this song is mentioned as a Sahir Ludhianvi songs in all sources including myswar and HFGK.

Avinash Scrapwala is right. The song is mentioned as written by Sahir Ludhianvi in HFGK. And I am sure that the record of this song also contains the name of Sahir Ludhianvi (I request our knowledgeble readers to help confirm/refute this fact).

In the writeup of this song, I had wondered how Sahir Ludhianvi, known to be an URDU poet, could come up with lyrics full of rural Hindi words and with plenty of references to Ramcharitmanas. Mr Kanti Mohan Sharma, a knowledgeable reader who watched this movie in 1953 mentioned that Pt Narendra Sharma claimed to have helped Sahir Ludhianvi write the lyrics of two of the songs and the above mentioned wedding song was one of them.

Equipped with all the above information, I decided to watch the movie which is available online. And it was not very long before I found what I was looking for. The credits mention that Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist of all songs while the wedding song is credited to Pt Narendra Sharma.

So there it is. Mystery solved and now we have some newfound information that is required to be revised. First revision is that the song Man sheetal nai sufal…najar lag jaaye na will have to be credited to Pt Narendra Sharma and not Sahir Ludhianvi. Secondly, the song “so ja re so ja meri ankhiyon ke taare” will have to be mentioned as a multiple version song sung separately by Geeta Dutt and Lata and that both versions of the song appeared in the movie (contrary to what is mentioned in HFGK.

This multiple version lullaby the the song under discussion. The song seems to get played at the drop of hat in this movie. Lata version of the song gets played on at least four occasions. The fifth occasion taht gts played towards the end of the movie appears to be in another voice to me. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on this versoin as well as on this seemingly nondescript but still intriguing song from “Jeewan Jyoti”(1953)- a movie which was till now regarded as an insignificant movie that was marked the debut of Shammi Kapoor in a forgettable role.

The song is written by Sahir Ludhianvi and music is composed by S D Burman.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala, of course, who also provide the Devnagri script lyrics of the various versions of the song.

Seeing that Asha Bhonsle version and also Lata-Asha Bhonsle version were “version” songs and not part of the movie, I have excluded ther lyrics from this writeup.

Today (14 november 2014) is the birth anniversary of Pt Jawaharlal Nehru (14 november 1889-27 may 1964), India’s first Prime Minister. This day is celebrated in India as Children’s day.

To my mind, every day in the year should be Children’s day (and also Women’s day, if you ask me :) And by extension, pets’ day too for those who keep pets. :)

Here is just the song for the occasion. This nice and hummable song is sung by Manna Dey, Rafi and Kishore Kumar and it is picturised on Pran, Anwar Hussain and Ajit who sing this song for Baby Rani-who is the Nanha Farishta-baby Angel, in this movie called “Nanha Farishta”(1969).

The title song of this movie was quite popular during its time, but I had never heard this particular song before. when I heard this song, I found it quite a moving song and a song with a message and wondered who the lyricist was. The lyricist is none other than Sahir Ludhiani, of course !

Kalyanji Anandji is the lyricist.

‘Phanda-1975’ was one of the first few films screened at our colony club when the weekly screening of films was started there in 1975-76.  The name of this film was vague in my memory, and I do not remember either the film or its’ star cast or songs.  Might be an obscure movie of its time.  Now, after so many years when the film’s name knocked my memory, I take on search for its songs and other details.

Interestingly, I found that this films music was composed by Datta Naik (aka N Datta). And one of its songs was available on YT, sung by Rafi Saab, which I am sharing herewith today.  As per details available on IMDB, the film’s star cast includes Abhi Bhattacharya, Bindu, Uma Dutt, Iftekhar, Sujit Kumar, Madhu Malini, Leela Mishra, Rakesh Pandey, Raza Murad, Nazneen and Tun Tun.

Now I could remember that both Rakesh Pandey and Raza Murad played bad-guys in the film (please correct me if I am wrong).  One them is killed by the other and the killer gets the ‘phaansi ka phandaa’. I think this was a ‘B’ /’C’ grade movie of its time, based on the ‘betrayal-revenge’ theme.  It did not make any impact on the box office.

However, for us, we get this beautiful composition by N Datta sung by Rafi Saab out of the total four songs (as per myswar.com Phanda – 1975 ) in this movie. Of the other three songs, two are sung by Asha Bhonsle and one is a duet of Asha Bhonsle and Usha Mangeshkar.  Lyrics for three songs are penned by Shaakir Kotwi and one song is by Indeewar.  Today’s beautiful song is penned by Shaakir Kotwi.  I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song and other details of this movie.

Most of us were born in Independent India and we grew up reading about the Independence movement in our textbooks and other publications. These publications informed us that the non violent movement for independence moved the rulers. They saw the errors of their ways and peacefully quit India.

The textbooks also mentioned in passing about some names that believed in non violent ways to achieve independence. Their ways did not achieve much and detracted from the non violent movements, we were told.

As school kids of yore, we were not supposed to think and question, but just accept what was being told. After all, we were a product of the school system that was introduced by our benevolent British rulers and which was faithfully continued even after independence.

Several decades after leaving the school and (hopefully) becoming able to doubt and question, I find several lacunae in the simplistic tale of the struggle for Indian Independence. British did not establish their dominance over the world on the basis of non violence nor did they make their colonies free because of this reason. Examples of their cruelties have been carefully wiped out from history books. Millions of people died in India during several years because foodgrains were not allowed to reach the hungry rather they were shipped outside the country. And these years were described as years of famine in history books.

The systems set by the British, like their police system, education system, law system etc were meant to create people who would unthinkingly serve the cause of the British. And these systems remain in place even today. It is inconceivable but true that we are still following India Penal Code which was framed in 1860, just after 1857 (we know what happened in 1857). To keep things in perspective, British do not have anything even remotely like IPC in their own country. The same can be said about the Indian educational system and the Indian judicial system, among many other systems.

In brief, we have been fed myths instead of real facts about our freedom struggle. The true contributions of people like Subhash Chandra Bose (whose birth anniversary falls today) in the freedom struggle have been sought to be wished away, hoping that people will forget about them with time. But it seems clear that the contribution of Subhash Chandra Bose was extremely vital and crucial in winning Indian independence. The two world wars had weakened British empire financially. Country like India was becoming ungovernable, not just because of the “non violent” non co operation, but also because of the raising of Azad Hind Fauz and other such acts that weakened the authority of British in India. Moreover the public opinion around the world had turned overwhelmingly in favour of granting independence to India.

On the occasion of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s 118th birth anniversary today, here is a song from “Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose)(1966). This song is sung by Manna Dey. Kavi Pradeep is the lyricist. Music is composed by Salil Chaudhary.

When I initially took up this song for sharing, I only intended to share the lyrics. But after listening to this song, the subject of the song prompted me to share my own experience with it which is ‘Lottery’…

Here is what I wish to share:

Many of us may have sometimes tried purchasing a ‘lottery’ ticket (or gambling or ‘ghodon par paise lagaana… something like that), to try ‘luck’ ‘at least once’!
In my formative years I knew about a few such things where one could try his luck for the ‘riches’. There was ‘lottery’, there was ‘matka’ (worli matka, kalian) or ‘satta’ etc etc.

In my home state Maharashtra, state sponsored lotteries and other lotteries flourished and I saw many people purchasing lottery ticket to try their luck.

I too had tried my luck at lotteries till I was in 12th and thereafter I gave it up realizing that this was not ‘my game’. I had already taken up a job and I realised that this was a better way to get money for me instead of resorting to ‘gamble’ and hoping for a ‘Jackpot’.

Still, when ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ came up for the first time, my friends and well wishers suggested that I should try my hand in it since they thought that my GK was at par with the KBC contestants who were reaching the hot seat and winning ‘respectable’ prizes. (Sitting at home the questions always seems to be easier to us :) )

I fell in line with my well wishers’ suggestions and tried for the ‘KBC’. I easily cleared the first round and then eagerly waited for the call in second round. I took leave from the office for the whole day waiting for the call, but to no avail.

I repeated the same procedure once more with same futile result and then realised that this too was ‘not my game’, I reverted back to my earlier ‘philosophy’ of ‘juaa apni kismat mein nahin …’. I gave up and I have not given it a try since then, even after the passage of several seasons and despite the promptings from my family members and friends.

Coming back to the song, when I checked the details of the song and saw that it was sung by Rafi Saab, I looked at the starcast of this movie. It was almost 38-39 years ago that I had watched this movie and I do not remember much of the movie now except one song ‘jalaa do jaalaa do aag lagaa do’ (a song that I have already shared to Atul ji earlier).

I was expecting to find names like Mehmood, Rajendranath etc etc in the cast, but those names were not there. Finally when the video of this song began and Mukri apperaed on the screen, I thought that this song was performed by him on the screen. But soon I realised that it was Jr.Mehmood who was lip syncing and performing in this song.

Jr Mehmood lip syncing and that too in a voice none other than Rafi Saab’s ! That reminded me that he had also lip synced a song in “Do Raaste”. In this song, viz. apni apni biwi pe sabko badaa guroor hai Jr.Mehmood gets to lip sync in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice.

Seeing that ‘Rivaaz’ was a film of 1972, one could say that Jr.Mehmood had grown up suffiently in three years time, so much so that he was getting to lip sync in a male voice by this time !

I had never gone through the details of the ‘biography’ of Jr.Mehmood in the past. The only thing I remembered about him was his roles in a few films in our growing years. He was not much successful in films as a grown up adult.

Nevertheless, we all love him for the roles that he played those days and I think he was the Superstar Child Artist and Performer of those days. (He also worked with Rajesh Khanna in many films. :) )
He must be the most lovable child artist in the industry of those days.

So I was surprised on reading in Wikipedia that he had acted in over 265 films (in 7 different languages) and that he had produced and directed 6 Marathi movies.

Going through this list of films and this song, a question formed in my mind– How many songs had Rafi Saab sung for him ?

I searched and found one more such song.

Then I found a link on YT that gave his biography. It is here.

Then I kept searching for more. I came across some useful and many useless links during my searches.

I also realised that his birthday date is not mentioned anywhere online, including in wikipedia !

Well, was it possible to know more about Jr.Mehmood from the man himself?
Was it possible to talk to him and find answers to these questions?

Information collected this way would be authentic, exciting and interesting too!!

28 january 2015 was a big day for me and it was like hitting a ‘jackpot’- perhaps for the first time in my life..

I got to speak to Junior Mehmood on that day ! I greeted him, gave him my well wishes, and told him the purpose of my calling to him.

I briefly told him about our blog and about this article that I wished to do on him.

He too congratulated us on covering more than 10 K songs in the blog. He too extended his best wishes to us.

I asked him about his ‘birthday’ and came to know that it falls in the second half of the year (that will be disclosed at the appropriate occasion.

It was quite remarkable to notice how polite he was in his talk. He gave me a patient hearing while I was talking to him excitedly. After all, I was talking to a ‘film personality’ (and that too after so many years, nearly two decades after I briefly met with Gulzar Saab in 1996 at Kota-Rajasthan).

He was equally enthusiastic in telling me about all the songs that Rafi Saab had sung for him. I was trying to remember everything correctly as he was reeling them off.

He talked about these songs with great passion. He remembers his films and their details very well.

Thanking him for the time given to me, I took some liberty and grab this opportunity to ask him;

We have four songs in this series. And additionally we would take other songs sung by other artist (I think that female singers would be mainly associated in these songs ) to conclude this series in November on his birthday.

Today let us enjoy this wonderful song from the 1972 film ‘Rivaaz’. .

Interestingly wiki does not mention this film in the filmography of Jr.Mehmood)

“Rivaaj” (1972) was produced by K C Bokadia and directed by T Prakash Rao. The movie had Mala Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Farida Jalal, Nazir Hussain, Sulochana, Pandhari Bhai, Mukri, Gauri, Jayshree T, Raj Kishore, Zeb Rehman, Mehmood Junior etc in it.

“Amar Rahe Ye Pyaar”(1961) was directed by Prabhu for R P Films, Bombay. This social movie had Rajendra Kumar, Nalini Jaiwant, Nanda, Radha Kishan etc in it.

Little is known about this movie which means that this movie sank without a trace, despite boasting of Jubilee Kumar in the star cast.

This movie had six songs in it and they failed to become popular.

One song from this movie has been discussed in the past.

Here is another song from the movie. This song is a multi part song. It has as many as four parts. In other words, this song counts as four songs. So with the addition of this song, we now have five songs of this movie covered in the blog.

It is difficult to say where one part ends and the other part begins. The four parts merge seamlessly with each other.

Kavi Pradeep, whose birth centenary falls today (6 february 2015) is the singer as well as the lyricist. Music is composed by C Ramchandra.

HFGK mentions all parts as Pradeep solo, but we notice that one part has a female voice cum chorus as well in the third and fourth part. The female voice sounds like Asha Bhonsle’s though it could be Sudha Malhotra too.

Fortunate was it because the decision was taken by me to take a break from my current assignment and start a new journey which I would begin after searching and settling for.

No! No! Everything was not that sudden, it was a culmination of the incidents happening with me at the work place and the continuous thought process that I was going through since last 8/9 months.

The only difference this time (during the so far 30 years of my work-life) was that I was breaking without an alternate arrangement done and decided.

As I have already chosen a separate song for more on the above situation with a post too, we shall come back on the today’s song post first.

Many of our regulars wished that I should focus and do more posts and so did wish me.

Due to my inclination and passion for writing I too wish that I should do more posts and time to time there are many topics that I want to write upon or sometimes I would also like to simply share a song with an brief information accompanying it about the film and the film’s details.
And reading Atul ji’s posts and our other senior members’ posts those are having HFGK with them I too was eager to have a look at it and possess it.
As I knew that I would have a break of at least a month or more (starting from 2nd week of Feb), I planned to use this period by going through the HFGK and try to contribute some posts.

Searching on Google I landed on a wrong link (hfgk.8m.com) and the information on this link is having details about the ‘delux’ and ‘super delux’ editions of HFGK. I tried the contact numbers given there butthose numbers were not working. So I requested for information about them by sending SMS to Shri.Deshmukh Sir and Shri.Sudhir Sir. I got the details about them from Shri.Deshmukh Sir. Meanwhile Shri.Harminder Singh ji had responded to my mail. So the matter was clear and after initially thinking of getting the VOL – 3 (1951-60) and VOL-5 (1971-80) I decided to get the volume containing songs of the decade that I grew up with i.e. with the decade of 1971-80(Seventies).

After going through all the communication and formalities on 28th Jan, I eagerly began to look forward to my copy of HFGK. In my over enthusiasm I started checking with the local post office from 3rd February itself, but the parcel had not arrived by that time. So reluctantly I send a mail to Shri.Harminder Singh ji on 3rd Feb asking for the details and I received his reply very promptly. As he was out of station for a few days, so the parcel was not dispatched and he was going to dispatch it on the same day and it was expectedto reachme in 5-6 days time.

I checked with the Post Office again on the morning of 6th february as I was going away from my base station for two days that evening to my favorite place near Narmada-Rajpipla and to bring my elder daughter with me to enable her to enjoy a mini-vacation at home.

I kept asking my wife on phone during those two days to enquire if the parcel had reached. But it had not. We reached our base station on 12th morning which was my birthday!!

I thought of waiting for another day before sending a mail again seeking the details (docket no of parcel) from Shri.Harminder ji. Just as I was relaxing after lunch my phone rang … and this was a call from the local Post Office informing me that my parcel had arrived and I may go there and collect it.

I was more than happy to receive it on my birthday. (I love Books and that is the most favorite ‘gift’ I like to receive and also like to ‘gift’ others on special occasions. Secondly I would also like to mention here that since my childhood I am very much fascinated with the ‘Post-Office’ and have a special bond with it and may sometime do a post on this)

Now, to celebrate my acquisition of HFGK, I needed to discuss a song that had to be a ‘special’ one. I had earlier planned to do a song penned by Sahir Luhdhianvi as my first post to celebrate my first copy of HFGK. But, as I glanced through the first year of the decade i.e. 1971 I find this film mentioned in it and when I checked on the blog, I find that this song is yet to be discussed.

I was again surprised to note this (after ‘aaj ke is insaan ko ye kya ho gaya) because this was also a well known song sung by Kavi Pradeep and was frequently heard on radio and loud speakers during my growing up years. And this song figures in all compilations of cassettes/cds released on Kavi Pradeep.

Today I present this song sung by Kavi Pradeep which is also penned by him and composed by Chitragupt. The film is a 1971 film – ‘Kabhi Dhoop Kabhi Chhaaon’

It was a ‘Joy Films’ presentation and a social drama film Produced and Directed by Chandrakant. Music for this film was composed by Chitragupt and lyrics were by Prem Dhawan and Kavi Pradeep. Its star cast includes Dara Singh, Ameeta, Geetanjali, Jagdeep, Randhawa, Rammohan, Sapru, Renu, Mridula, Tiwari, Mona, Moppet Raja, Tiger Jogendra Singh, Julie, Mustafa, Kashmira, Anand Joshi, Gulab, Pahalawan, Deepak and Sulochana and many others. Qabil Amritsari wrote the story and dialogues for this film.

Today’s song is a title song of the movie. Though the video clip includes full lyrics, it appears to be shorter than the audio version.

Today we listen to this great voice, who left an indelible mark on Indians with his songs that covered important topics like partiotism, social causes, cultural heritage of the coutry etc.

While going through HFGK, I have found a few more songs (today’s song is one of them) that I plan to share in the days to come.

This is the second offering in this series. My primary focus in this series is to introduce those films from the decade 1971-1980 that are yet to make a debut on the blog.

But instead of going chronologically I willdiscuss these songs in sequence in which I noticed them in HFGK Vol-V.
And of course, special songs are to be discussed first.

And today’s song is definitely a special one – a devotional song in the ‘velvet voice’ – now this one really came to me as surprise when I read the first song in the list under this film’s name in HFGK. The singer was none other than Talat Mehmood.

We know Talat Saab for his ghazals, love songs and also philosophical songs at times. But I came across this devotional rendering by Talat Mehmood from the 1978 film ‘Toofaani Takkar’.

As per information provided in HFGK this stunt movie was a ‘Kalaras Chitra, Mumbai’ presentation and was directed by Ram Rasila (from the information that I read so far I believe that actor, lyricist Ram Rasila directed this movie, please correct me if I am wrong)

The star cast of this movie includes Azad, Hercules, Rajdeep, Rekha Chauhan, Santosh Kumari, Chandrakala Shah, Yogesh Kapur, Satish Shah, Vimla Devi, Minu Mehtab, Eruch Tarapore, Dalpat, M.H.Doctor,Meghmala, Mohan Choti,Hero Anand, Babu Raje (in friendly appearance) and Suchitra Mukherjee, Pishu Mota and Jambura 77 making their debut.
Anjaan, Yogesh Gaur and Ram Rasila were the lyricists for this movie while music was composed by C.Ramchandra.
This must be an obscure movie because not much information is available about it on the domain and so far I could not find any of its videos.

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and about the picturisation of this song.

(It turns out that one film with the same title was also made in 1947, and is yet to make a debut on the blog too, but so far I was not able to find any of its songs as of now)

In this series we are discussing the songs sung by Rafi Sb for Jr. Mehmood.  The first post discussed the song “Lagey Koi Lottery Koi Jackpot Lagey”.  Today’s song is from the 1972 film – ‘Bansi Birju’.

I remember this film’s name since I have watched this movie in my childhood. That must be in 1975-76.  I do not remember much about the film’s story and other details.  The only thing that remains in my memory is that Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri acted in this film.  The film is produced and directed by Prakash Verma for PeeVee Films, Bombay.  Its star cast includes Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri, Ramesh Deo, Nigar Sultana, Jr.Mehmood, Anwar Ali, Rajan Haksar, Yunus Parvez, Asha Chandra, Doly Dhotiwala, Bomi Dhotiwala, Preetam, Baby Seema, Dharmveer, Mridula, Surya Kant Mehta, Ishan Arya, Maruti Junior and others with K.N.Singh and Jamal in guest appearance.

The film has total of seven songs, including one ‘two’ part song.  Lyrics are written by Yogesh and the music is composed by Vijay Raghav Rao.

Here is a brief about this movie as mentioned on one of the YouTube links of this movie, though I made some corrections and added some info after watching the first thirty minutes of the movie online.

The story deals with Bansi (Jaya Bhaduri) who is a dancer at Mithan Bai’s (Nigar Sultana) kotha.  One day she is called to perform at the residence of Seth Mehtab Singh.  After the dance, the seth tries to molest Bansi.  But Bansi escapes and gets into a bus.  In the bus she meets Birju (Amitabh Bachchan). Finding him to be a good person, Bansi tells her entire life story.  She was a girl named Meera, raised by someone named Jeevanlal.  Both of them decide to elope, and go from door to door looking for shelter. Finally they get married in their own village, but people come to know that Bansi is a former dancing girl.  The villagers object and declare them as outcasts, and they are not accepted in the village.  Mithan Bai’s men, led by Khushiram (Yunus Parvez) catch up with the beleaguered pair and beat them, and take her back to the Kotha.

One lovely gem of a song from this film is already posted on the blog – “Nainon Ke Ye Do Panchhi”.

This song is sung by Rafi Saab, and it is performed on screen by Jr.Mehmood.  He is spelling out the ‘formula’ on how to make a ‘hit’ film in ‘Bambai’, while a drunken Ramesh Deo (with his girl friend) is seen in the crowd watching this show.  The song is a ‘stage performance’ where Jr. Mehmood is seen, probably with Maruti Junior.  I request other readers to kindly comment / confirm.

As noted by Atul ji in the post while presenting the first song of this movie I too feel that the songs of this film are good and if one has not heard them before should listen them for couple of times.  Because in the process of preparing of today’s post I listened to one more song of this film – ‘Aaya Koi Khayaal’ – in the voice of Vani Jairam and it also is a really nice song.  While listing the songs of this film HFGK (volume 5) mentions this song as the first song in the movie and as the movie is available online I thought to watch it till this song appears, but actually this song comes at number two in the movie, the first being ‘Aaya Koi Khayaal’ picturized on Jaya Bhaduri (now Jaya Bachchan).
