The uncertainties of life, in some way, always gives us happy as well as sad moments and surprises as well. The journey of life keeps on going on and on still, like that only. . . We never know how things are going to happen around us and what ‘life’ has there in store for us with every new day coming.

***

When it was decided that I will have to go abroad for a job opportunity there, I was at Nagpur and my daughters were staying at Anand Gujarat for their studies. So, it was obvious that my wife will also shift to Anand with my daughters. Most of our relatives, from my side and my wife’s side were already in Nagpur, except that my mother is staying at Parli Vaijnath (Marathwada-Maharashtra) with one of my younger brother. And my youngest brother (we are three) is staying at Mundra Kachchh-Gujarat.

So, it was natural for me to try to meet all of them before I take up my journey abroad. Before leaving Nagpur I and my wife travelled to Parli Vaijnath to seek blessings of my Mother and Mother Goddess Tulja Bhawani at Tuljapur. After coming back, we meet my paternal relatives and my wife’s paternal relatives. Then we took journey from Nagpur to Anand, again by car (this time with a driver) en route to Akola – my birthplace – and our ancestral house there, where one of my Uncle and my Buaa ji were staying.

I thought it was all happening as ordained by God that I visit Akola and stay there one night before taking on this new journey in my life. That way I thought I will have blessings of my Grand Father and Grand Mother who had already left many years before for their heavenly abode. Well, I met my cousins and Buaa ji at Akola, as my Uncle there had already left for Nagpur for some urgent work.

***

Everything went well and I too settled down in Kenya for my job and soon after almost four and half months passed on peacefully it was time for me to visit home on account my first leave to attend the Ganpati Festival at home. While everything was planned in advance and it was also finalised that this time me and my family can only visit Mundra-Kachchh (our home, presently occupied by tenants) and finish the bank related works – change in address there etc. and after that may be a single day visit to Vadodara to meet few of known friends and well-wishers and if possible a visit to one of the ashram near Rajpipla where we have been visiting since 2007.

Of course, there was a lot ‘shopping’ also to be done for me, as well as for my fellow Indian friends staying with me in Nairobi. But then there is one more factor and that is the uncertainties of life. We never know what is going to happen next.

There was an unfortunate development between these days before my travel. My Uncle staying at Nagpur had to be admitted to Hospital initially for a seemingly mild heart attack which he survived and an operation was suggested to remove some blockages in veins. However, on detailed examination it was diagnosed that he will not be able to face the operation as his heart was ‘weak’ not in good health to cope up with the operation that was required.

He was in hospital for almost twenty days and he recovered too, but when he was about to be discharged he got another attack. And then slowly one by one his organs started failing. With only the heart working, now it was almost left to God. As days passed and the Ganpati festival was approaching all family members and relatives where worrying about that if we will be able to bring the God Ganpati to our home or not?

***

I reached Anand on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi on 25th August. It was already noon by then and immediately after reaching home we started the preparations for ‘Ganpati Sthapna’. My daughters were already in town to bring the Ganpati idol to our home. It was their turn this time to decide and bring the idol to home. The first day of Ganpati festival passed well, still all family members and relatives worrying about the deteriorating health condition of my Uncle admitted in the hospital.

Having settled at home after a gap of almost five months and have taken a rest after being in travel for almost nineteen hours, the next day was still in an anxiety mood for me. I was eager to take on the planned activities soon. As we finished the evening ‘aarti’ on the second day and I was just savouring the Prasad after performing prayers, the looming fear stroked and the news came of my Uncle passing away at Nagpur.

***

Why I am writing this post here is that other than being my Uncle and always friendly with me, he was a crazy music lover. While I do remember watching some movies with him (and I have mentioned that in one of my posts on the blog), there are some vague memories too of my childhood where I used to visit my grandparents in the summer vacations and where I can meet my uncles and watch movies. I also remember attending his marriage when I was in high school. As I grew up, there were always occasions of a family get together where we meet. Then he also got transferred to the same place my parents shifted i.e. Parli Vaijnath. When I got married in 1994 he was there actively taking part in all ceremonies.

Whenever I visited him music was an integral part of discussions and I used to check which new albums he has got in his collection. After I started working and started my own collection the discussions thereafter were mainly on which rare song/album he got in his collection and which one I was missing? He was a great fan of Rajendra Kumar (like my other uncles and aunts and my grandmother) but he was also a fan of Jeetendra. He liked Jeetendra’s musical hits very much. After his retirement he was really enjoying very much downloading songs from ‘Youtube’ and other sources.

When I told him about our blog and my contributions he was visiting the blog regularly, though he may not have commented on any posts. He had settled in Nagpur after retirement and when I shifted to Nagpur in 2015 I stayed with him before shifting my household from Guajrat. I and my wife used to visit regularly in between during our stay at Nagpur. The last time I meet him was in the morning of 9th March this year to seek his blessings.

***

Members on the ‘Atulites’ WhatsApp group may recall message of my travelling to Nagpur with my younger brother during my recent visit to India. The visit was for this purpose of meeting my aunt and cousins after the passing away of my Uncle. It was this train journey, filled with nostalgia and yet memories of the departed soul and thoughts of uncertainties of life. We could not attend his final rites given the time required to travel.

***

At Nagpur I got to know how tough it was for my uncle to be in the bed for so many days. It was not his nature. At home he was always doing some productive activity and busy in doing something or the other. When he had to spend those days in the ‘hospital’ he was always insisting to take him to home from the hospital and remove all those medical apparatuses that were attached to him for supporting his ill health. He would have never imagined this day in his life.

In the ICU he was restricted from doing many things as the discipline have to be maintained there. But how long you can keep one holding like that. One day he was found listening to songs and that too in a good volume which was enough to make the hospital staff rush to him and take away the mobile from him, to save the other patients from this musical entertainment.

Well that is one part. But, on the other part, as I was told later, it was very difficult for him to bear the pain and the difficulties in breathing. Each new day was coming to him with more pain and problems. So actually, he was requesting everybody to let him go home and rest peacefully. The problem of choked veins had not aggravated suddenly, but his came on over a period of time on account of continuous smoking (which he was advised to stop two years earlier).

***

We as a human being always enjoy, celebrate, and share happy moments with others. But nobody can share this ‘pain and sufferings’ of one who is going through it. He must have been going through this thought I guess.

Ro’oge tum to na royegi duniya
Na royegi duniya
Tere aansuon ko samajh na sakegi
Tere aansuon pe hansegi ye duniya

In today’s fast paced world, given the hard facts of life one really doesn’t gets time to stop moving. The ‘show’ needs to go on and one needs to be moving on. . . always. Even we the relatives, no doubt, some of us were there with him for all these days in his bedside in the hospital, but some of us like me were not there and could not even attend his final rites. And have to continue with our daily routine and even doing things that one should avoid doing in this period of grief.

Jagmagaate raho
Gungunaate raho
Zindagi mein sada
Muskuraate raho

Paying my tributes to him I present this song from the 1971 film ‘Kathputli’. This film was directed by Brij for the banner of ‘Dynamo International, Bombay’. The star cast includes Jeetendra, Mumtaz, Helen, Agha, Manmohan, Malika, Bhagwan, Asha Chandra, Leela Mishra, Pravin Pal, Kundan, Radheshyam, Dilip Dutt, Kumud Tripathi, Bhola, Rajrani, Ramlal, Fazlu, Naidu, Jerry, Bishan, Brij, Jalal Agha and Master Chiku. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 28.08.1971.

This movie has total eight songs, including one two version song. The songs are penned by Verma Malik (four songs), Indeevar (three songs), and Shadab (one song). Music for this movie was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mahendra Kapoor and Mohd Rafi give their voices to the songs in this movie. One duet song sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd Rafi – “Ek Baat Poochhoon” has been posted earlier on the blog (long back in 2012 😊).

Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar and written by Verma Malik. As mentioned above music for this song is composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. I am not aware in what context this song is in the movie and I have not watched the movie too. However, this song is in my memory since I heard it on a cassette which HMV had brought as ‘A Tribute to the Legend – Kishore Kumar’ (if I am correct). This is a four-cassette set.

Whatever be the context of this song in the movie, the name of the movie does remind me of this dialogue from the movie ‘Anand’ (1970) – “. . . ham sab to rang manch ki kathputliyaan hai, jinki dor uparwaale ke haath mein bandhi huyi hai, kaun kab kaise utthega, ye koi nahin bataa sakta. . .  ha ha ha’

🙂

Enjoy the song now!!!

Today, 25th of October 2017, is the thirty seventh ‘remembrance anniversary’ of the great ‘poet-lyricist’ Sahir Ludhianvi. He passed away this day in 1980 leaving behind the great legacy of his poems and leaving behind his immortal poetry which people are still enjoying, discussing, and even doing research on it and writing about his life and his poetry. And like me there will be many who will agree that Sahir and his poetry will be discussed as long as Hindi Cinema and HFM exists and his poetry will be discussed so long as humanity and human relations, emotions exists.

On this occasion, today we will listen to this beautiful prayer song from the 1974 movie ‘Mehmaan’ penned by Sahir Ludhianvi. The film was directed by KP Atma for Shatrujit Films, Bombay, and was produced by Shatrujit Paul. It had Biswajeet, Rekha, Anwar Hussain, Manmohan Krishna, Abhi Bhattacharya, Tarun Bose, Sulochana, Mukri, Bhalla, Lata Sinha, Azad, Gopal Sehgal, Indira Bansal, Mona, Brahm Bharadwaj, Helen, Pratima Devi, Thakurdas, and new discovery Joginder. Story and Screenplay of this movie was written by Shatrujit Paul. Its dialogues were written by Rahi Masoom Raza. Editing for this movie was done by Shivaji Avdhoot. The movie was passed by Censor Board on 23.02.1974.

The movie had total six songs penned by Sahir Ludhianvi, and composed by Ravi. So far two songs from this movie have been posted on the blog here – Meri Chaahat Rahegi Hamesha Jawaan and Uff Ye Jawaani Ye Adaa. Asha Bhonsle, Deedar Singh Pardesi, Mahendra Kapoor, Meenu Puroshottam and Mohd Rafi gave their voices to the songs in this movie. Today’s song is the third song from this movie to be posted on the blog, and it is sung by Deedar Singh Pardesi, Meenu Puroshottam and Mahendra Kapoor.

In one of my earlier post on the blog here I have discussed in detail about and listed some of the famous and immortal ‘bhajans’ written by Sahir Ludhianvi for Hindi movies. I have also mentioned in the same post that for me Sahir was a ‘truly secular’ individual apart from a humanitarian and motivational philosopher. Why I am insisting this here again can well be understood from the following lines in today’s song and how relevant they fit into in our prevailing socio-political condition,

bhale karam kar duniyaa mein
ye karam hai nek kamaai
in karmon mein chhupi hai
saare dharmon ki sachchaai
jisne achhe karam kiye
har dharm ki laaj nibhaai
dharm ki laaj nibhaai

For that matter the following lines from the song “Hum Ne Suna Tha Ik Hai Bharat” also speaks a lot about ‘karm’ (our deeds) and who else other than Sahir can come up with such straight forward hard-hitting words.

kuchh insaan brahman kyun hain
kuchh insaan harijan kyun hain
ek ki itni izzat kyun hai
ek ki itni zillat kyun hai
dhan aur gyaan ko
taaqat walon ne apni jaageer kahaa
mehnat aur ghulaami ko
kamzoron ki taqdeer kahaa
insaanon ka yeh batwaara
vehshat aur jahaalat hai

jo nafrat ki shiksha de
wo dharma nahin hai la’anat hai
janam se koyi neech nahin hai
janam se koyi mahaan nahin
karam se badh kar kisi manushya ki
koyi bhi pehchaan nahin

This song with its link was in circulation on social media and people who might not have been aware of this song earlier or may be some people who found it worthy shared it with a surprise – “Where was this song all this while…”, with a request that – “The minimum we can do is spread the message of love and harmony amongst our countrymen. Hope the message through this beautiful song enrich our hearts and souls…”

Much more has already been written about Sahir Ludhianvi and a lot more will surely be there in future. As I said above, this good work, this discussion about his poetry and his thoughts for the humanity, will live on and on. . .

Coming to the song being posted today. From the video uploaded recently, we can identify Abhi Bhattacharya, Vishwajit, Sulochana, Rekha, Manmohan Krishna, Mukri and others in the picturization of this song. I have not watched this movie and for those interested to watch it, it is now available on YT and from some of the comments on this link about the movie I can guess that the movie was not liked by many.

Let us now enjoy the today’s song – Ram Rahim Krishn Kareem

Blog Day : 3476 Post No. : 13964

Most Indians are well aware about Subhash Chandra Bose, who was easily one of the most charismatic and inspirational figures among the Indian freedom fighting leaders of pre independence era.

Hindi movies too have been impressed enough with him and there have been quite a few movies featuring him, viz. “Netaji Subhash”(1947), “Samaadhi”(1950), “Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose”(1966), “Subhash Chandra”(1978) etc.

The latest movie on Netaji has been “Bose-The Forgotten hero”(2004).

Lyrics of a song from this movie were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala to be posted today (23 january 2018) on the occasion of the 121st birth anniversary of Netaji.

That got me interested in watching the movie. I have not watched it fully yet, because the story is too well known and moreover I cannot bear to watch the part when the British realise that Subhash Chandra has escaped. I know that all that happened 77 years ago and what I am watching is just a movie but even today I dread thinking about the treatment meted out by the British to Subhash Chandra Bose’s family members to find his whereabouts. There was nothing Gandhian about how policemen interrogated Subhash Chandra Bose’s relatives.

Fortunately, the song under discussion happens before that. And it involves that part of the movie that appeals me the most. That part has to do with Subhash Chandra Bose’s escape from Calcutta to Gomoh by road and from there he catches a train to Peshawar at midnight.

Subhash Chandra Bose was capable of great meticulousness in making his plans and executing them. And this escape was a shining example of that.

Subhash Chandra Bose was kept in Fort William Jail, Calcutta in december 1940. There he staged a fast unto death strike. Unnerved, the British rulers released him and kept him under house arrest in his residence at 38/2 Elgin Road, Calcutta.

While at his residence, Subhash Chandra Bose pulled off a meticulously planned escape from right under the noses of securitymen.

Subhash Chandra Bose made it known to the world (including Britishers) that he was contemplating sanyas. He retreated into a room in the residence where no one was allowed to see him. His meal would be shoved under the door of the room once a day in a thaali and that thaali would be pushed back after consuming the foodstuff.

Subhash Chandra Bose’s extended family had another residence at 1, Woodburn park. where Subhash’s elder brother Sarat Chandra Bose used to live with his family. Subhash picked Sisir Chandra Bose, the son of Sarat Chandra Bose, for his plan.

The Bose family had several cars, viz Studebaker, Opel, Wanderer W24 etc. Subhash Chandra Bose chose Wanderer 24 W for the purpose.

Prima facie, Wanderer was a noisy car rather than a soundless car as befitting a getaway car But it had advantages over the other cars posssessed by the family. Cars those days did not have efficient cooling arrangements for engine and the radiator was required to be re-filled with water and the car was required to be stopped for cooling while on long distance drive. Wanderer had an advanced cooling system and this car did not suffer from that engine overheating problem during long drives.

Sisir Kumar Das, then a medical student (he went on to become a renowned paediatrician) was made to go on a trial run on 25 december 1940 upto Burdwan ( a distance of 100 km) on this car to check if the car as well as he himself were ready to undertake the long journey.

Every day for several days Sisir would drive to Subhas’s house late at night in his car. When policemen stopped him, he would tell them, “My uncle wants to listen to the radio broadcast about the Second World War. He is too ill to tune the radio himself. So, he depends on me to do it for him. The guards would let him pass. He would leave after midnight. So this routine of leaving in that car after midnight was set up several days in advance.

Bose slipped out of his Calcutta residence after midnight on 1:30 AM on 17 january 1941 on this car, with Sisir Kumar Bose driving as usual and the securitymen did not notice anything unusual.

Sisir Bose drove through the night. He was constantly being seved coffee by his uncle who was seated on the left rear side and was carrying a thermos containing coffee. The car arrived Barari near Dhanbad (270 KM), where Ashok Nath Bose, the elder brother of Sisir Bose was posted with “Barari Coke Works” (Now Bharat Central Coalfields Limited) as a chemical Engineer and stayed with his newly married wife Mira. Subhash Chandra Bose, posing as Ziauddin, spent the whole day of 17 January 1941 there. He was supposed to catch 63 UP Howrah-Peshawar train at Asansol, but Ashoknath advised his uncle to board the train at Gomoh. Asansol was an important station and the train arrived there well before midnight so chances of being noticed there were high. Gomoh on the other hand was a smaller station and the train arrived there after midnight, so there would be very few people there and chances of being noticed was low.

Subhash Agreed to this change of plan. Sisir was not famiiar with the road from Barari to Gomoh (50 KM) so Ashoknath and his wife Meera, seated in the rear of the car accompanied Sisir (at the wheel) and Subhash (at the passenger seat) upto Gomoh.

They reached Gomoh railway station at midnight. Subhash asked the others to go back instead of seeing him off at the platform. Sisir insisted on accompanying him to the platform, to see his uncle off. He went to the station, bought the ticket from Gomoh to Peshawar and boarded the train which arrived Gomoh after midnight. Some policemen, rubbing tobacco on their palms were around, while the most sought after revolutionary (though he was not yet known to have escaped) quietly slipped away into the unknown from right under their noses.

Later he reached Peshawar and from there futher plans to escape out of India were chalked out.

The movie does not have scope for many songs, but the song that plays in the background while Subhash’s train runs through the breadth of the nation, hauled by a steam locomotive, is quite evocative and moving. The same song is again played when he is seen going towards the western border of India into Afghanistan.

The song keeps playng in the background at moments like this in parts. The longer and full song is available only in the audio version.

Here is this inspirational and moving song from an inspirational figure from our recent history. The song is sung by Sonu Nigam (hindi part) and Nachiketa Chakraborty (Bangla part), with some chorus singing as well. Jawed Akhtar is the lyricist. Music is composed by A R Rahman.

It is a nice and soothing bhajan, best heard in early mornings.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# The Special Voices of the decade – 2 # Anwar #
———————————————–———————-

Welcome all to this second article under this ‘series’.

In this ‘series’ we are discussing the ‘Special Voices’ which emerged on the horizon of HFM in the years of Seventies, and who in their own way have left an indelible mark in the minds of ‘music lovers’ leaving behind legacy of many many memorable songs.

These ‘Special Voices’ are those singers who make their entry in Hindi Film Music when the legends like Mohd Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey and Mukesh, Mahendra Kapoor among Male Singers and Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, among female singers were already ruling the Hindi Film Music scene. Still, these new voices, when they entered into HFM, took the audience by storm. Some of them were successful enough and popular too, and they continue to sustain for a long time.

However, some, though they shine very brightly as they appear on the scene, but were not able to sustain for a long time and slowly fade away from the scene and may be from the memory of many people too. In any case all of them gave us many fabulous songs and memories to cherish forever. Some of these Singers continued to enjoy being favorites among music directors and audience and/ or both and were successful in keeping themselves going and singing.

But some were not lucky enough and were sidelined with or without any reason. Politics, ego, discrimination and hypocrisy play their roles around us in every sphere of life, and Cinema too has always been influenced by these factors. Many talented people have been affected by this. And so, if one compares the number of songs their final tally read one will conclude that they were not successful or popular as the other established singers of their time who were ruling the charts at that time.

But, numbers are not the true test and so in these cases they will not justify the immense talent these people possess.

One of such talented Singer is the name – Anwar Hussain or Anwar as he is better known by. The voice that was said to be the ‘closest’ to, and having a ‘strange resemblance’ with the voice of Rafi Saab.

Anwar was born on 1st February, 1949 in Mumbai. His father Aashiq Hussain was an accomplished harmonium player and assistant to the famous Music Director Ghulam Haider. His father also used to play sitar. This familiar film and music background inspired young Anwar to take on music and singing. Looking at his interest in singing, his father took him to Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan for training in classical music. Here Anwar took a rigorous training for more than ten years.

Simultaneously he was also doing stage shows where he used to sing songs of Rafi Saab. He was noticed by the famous S. Hazara Singh who took him to Poona to sing with his musical group. While Anwar was going around doing the stage shows and singing in marriage functions, he always wanted to do playback singing for movies. His friends were also encouraging him always and telling him that his voice was very much similar to that of Rafi Saab’s voice.

Music director Kamal Rajasthani who was also struggling then to establish himself as a music-director in Hindi film world, spotted Anwar during one of his stage shows and he gave him a break as a playback singer in the movie ‘Mere Ghareeb Nawaaz’ (1973). Kamal Rajasthani also gave him further training to polish his talent.

Anwar made his debut in Hindi films with this song ‘Kasmein Hum Apni Jaan Ki Khaaye Chale Gaye’. Though initially he rehearsed for a different song but was finally given this solo and to sing. It so happened that Rafi Saab was present in the same studio where mixing of this song was being done and when Rafi Saab listened to this song, he asked his secretary when did he recorded this one. One can easily assume that the praise and showering coming straight from the ‘living legend’ then would have been more than enough for someone to establish himself in the industry and make a great career.

However, unfortunately, ‘stars’ were not in favor of Anwar and his career didn’t take off after his debut as he expected it to be. When he recorded his first song he was just twenty years old. So, it was still a long way to go for him. But in spite of the ‘perfect start’ with ‘Mere Ghareeb Nawaaz’, he had to wait for almost four years to get his next chance to sing in Hindi films.

And that too came up after lot of struggle and making visits to several music directors. As told by Anwar himself he used to visit many music directors and play his first recorded song to get work. Many of them appreciated him, but also told him that since Rafi Saab was already there so they didn’t see any reason to have him song for them. In a very recent interview of 2016 Anwar has given vent to his feelings, and his mistakes too, which he admits were mainly responsible to ruin his career in HFM.

Well, coming back to his looking for work, he met many of the leading and famous music directors of that time but nothing materialized. Finally, when he contacted Mehmood who was then busy in the making of ‘Kunwaara Baap’ (1974). He got some respite, as Mehmood assured him to give songs in his next movie ‘Janta Hawaldar’ (1979). Mehmood took him to music director Rajesh Roshan. The latter took him on as a playback singer, without asking him any questions, as he was aware of Mehmood’s ‘music sense’.

And after that as we are all aware the songs of ‘Janta Hawaldar’ were liked immensely by the public specifically “Hamse Ka Bhool Huyi“and “Teri Aankhon Ki Chaahat Mein”.

The song that was first recorded for this movie was “Teri Aankhon Ki Chaahat Mein”. After recording, Mehmood took to play it for Rajesh Khanna who was shooting at ‘Filmalaya Studios’ for another movie. When he listened to this song his reaction was – “Bade dinon ke baad Rafi saab ne bade mood mein gaana gaya hai”.

After this movie he started getting offers and some of his notable songs came in movies like ‘Qurbaani’ (1980), ‘Aahista Aahista’ (1981), ‘Naseeb’ (1981), ‘Prem Rog’ (1982), ‘Vidhaata’ (1982), ‘Arpan’ (1983), ‘Sohni Mahiwal’ (1984), ‘Ham Hain Laajawaab’ (1984), ‘Ye Ishq Nahin Aasan’ (1984), ‘Heer Raanjha’ (1992), etc.

His career lasted for almost twenty years from 1973 to 1993. And as mentioned by him in the interview on RS TV he sang about 1000 to 1500 songs for the movies (I am not aware if this is only for Hindi Movies or it includes other language movies too. Knowledgeable readers are requested to throw more light on this.)

In this same interview the anchor noted and I also vaguely remembered that people initially thought that Anwar was the son of Rafi Saab. It should be noted here that from 1973 to 1980 when Rafi Saab was still alive, he got very less opportunities of singing in movies. Though he got the opportunity to sing with Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Suresh Wadkar, Asha Bhonsle, Sudha Malhotra and others he didn’t get that much if we compare it with other singers and that too specially Rafi Saab himself had said about him that he is the best one who could fill the gap after him.

But nothing magical happened and thus a talented singer’s career come to a sad end.

Other than the songs that I mentioned above I like his “Koyee Pardesi Aaya Pardes Mein  and “Haathon Ki Chand Lakeeron Ka”. I would also like to mention the song “Yaar Dagaa De Gaya Dulhan Ko Le Gaya” which is having his voice along with Manna Dey and Jaspal Singh. Another famous song by him is “Mohabbat Ab Tijaarat Ban Gayi Hai”, which he sang for Jeetendra in 1983 for the film ‘Arpan’ which is his other song I like very much and it was quite popular too in those years.

There are many of his songs which I like or which had been popular, however I have mentioned above only those songs which give me ‘nostalgic’ feeling most. So far (if the data is updated and correct) we have only eleven of his songs posted on the blog; and not a single one of his from the melodious musical ‘Ahista Ahista’ has been posted so far on the blog. But, well, that gives us an opportunity to discuss them in future.

Today’s song is closer to my heart and very nostalgic for me. For today’s post initially, I strongly felt to share the song “Nazar Se Phool Chunti Hai Nazar” from ‘Aahista Aahista’, but I skipped it for future. The second option was the beautiful song from ‘Janta Hawaldar’ – “Teri Aankhon Ki Chaahat Mein” (this was available and shared by me long back in 2012, but still to be posted). However, for today, I have selected this song from ‘Be-Shaque’ (1980). Because this way I can also introduce this movie on the blog.

This was a song in my vague memory and I was sure that it was sung by Mohd Rafi. It was in my wish list of the songs that I wish to see on our blog. Before I could search and prepare for it one fine day I noticed that it has been posted for the film ‘Laal Bangla’ (1966). But when I checked again, I found that it does not have the same lines that were in my memory for so long. Confused, I keep on searching and finally succeeded in getting the song which I think I have heard many many years back. Now I got to know that this is sung by Anwar and not by Mohd Rafi. But interestingly, the music for the films ‘Laal-Bangla’ and the movie for today’s song, is composed by the same music director Usha Khanna. The lyrics of this song are penned by Nandi Khanna.

I have not watched this movie and would request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this film and the songs from this film. Also, I would like to note here that when I shared this song long back I had only the video of this song which has only one stanza. At that time I thought the song was only this one stanza. Now after almost five years I have been able to find the full version of this song (but audio only) which is being presented with this post today.

The film ‘Be-Shaque’ was directed by Kashinath for Surya Gayatri Productions, Bombay. It had Yogita Bali, Mithun Chakravarty, Sonia Sahni, Jalal Agha, Amrish Puri, Asha Chandra, Suresh Chatwal, Mohan Choti, Pental, Raj Bibra and Shakti Kapoor. This movie has four songs (as per HFGK Vol-V) – two penned by Anjaan, and one each by Ravindra Rawal and Nandi Khanna. Music is by Usha Khanna. Anwar, Asha Bhonsle, Suresh Wadkar and Usha Khanna gave their voices to the songs in this movie. On screen this song is lip synced by Mithun Chakravarty.

Today 1st February being the sixty-ninth birth anniversary of Anwar Hussain or Anwar, let us wish a very happy birthday to him and a healthy and peaceful life ahead. Enjoy this wonderful song. . .

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 61 # Movies with same titles ‘Haar Jeet’
———————————————–—————————————–

Recently our dear Kamath Saab shared the song ‘Mast Pawan Shaakhen Lehraayen’ from the 1940 movie ‘Haar Jeet’. And seeing that post I immediately recalled sharing one song from the film having the same title – ‘Haar Jeet’ and released in 1972. I thought that a song from this ‘Haar Jeet’ (1972) was already posted on the blog. Or maybe it was discussed in some post or mentioned in comments on the blog.

And very co-incidentally few days before the post of Kamath Saab I was browsing the blog for the movies that I was searching in the ‘list-of-songs-by-movies’ but was unable to locate them. At that time I also searched for this movie ‘Haar Jeet’ (1972), but could not locate it.  Simultaneously I succeeded to locate ‘Chaacha Bhateeja’ (1977), which was recently introduced on the blog. The spelling I was searching with was ‘Chacha Bhatijaa’ (like ‘Chacha Chaudhary’ (1953) and ‘Chacha Zindabad’ (1959)). Then I also found the movie ‘Samaapti’ (1949) which I tried to search with wrong 🙂 options like ‘Sampatti’.

When I could not locate the 1972 ‘Haar Jeet’, I tried to search it with different spelling combinations. But could not succeed. So, I concluded that this movie is yet to make a debut on the blog. And if this post, is passed by our Central Board of Post Certification 😉 this movie is going to make a debut on the blog today. This post and the debut of this movie also serves one of my ‘purpose’ of introducing the ‘movies having same title’.

My last post in this endeavor was on 24 Sep 2016 when I shared the song Ye Pyaar Bada Beimaan Hai from the 1951 movie ‘Saudaagar’. After such a long gap, even I have to ask myself – ‘itney din tum kahaan rahe’ 🙂

On our blog we already have ‘Haar Jeet’ from 1940 and also from 1954. Today this ‘third’ ‘Haar Jeet’ of 1972 makes a debut on the blog. This film is directed by CP Dixit for ‘Prithvi Pictures, Bombay’. It was a social movie. In a footnote, HFGK makes a note that this movie was based on the story of K Balachander’s ‘Thamarai Nenjam’. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 10.04.1972. It has Rehana Sultan, Anil Dhawan, Radha Saluja, Mehmood, Madan Puri, Dhoomal, Baby Sarika, Master Alankar, Baby Tabassum, Chintu, Bhola, Jal Khatau, Arun Kumar and Kamini Kaushal in friendly appearance.

The film has four songs as per HFGK Vol- V. All the four songs are written by Anand Bakshi, and music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Manna Dey have lent their voices to the songs in this movie.

Today’s song is a lovely duet sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar and lip synced on screen by Radha Saluja and Anil Dhawan respectively. Lyrics are by Anand Bakshi, and music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

Since I had not watched this movie I could not say much about this movie or its songs. I would request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

main nadaan hoon tum kamsin

dil bechain rahaa tum bin

Blog Day : 3486 Post No. : 14002

Post number 14000 was written by Sudhir Ji on 1 february 2018. In that post, he made several interesting observations and he wanted my take on them. I will try to cover those points and make some points of my own.

While brieflyly discussing the previous thousandth posts, Sudhir Ji made this observation:

The 1K post

He did write that he expects the blog to go from “strength to strength” and that he would “. . .add many more thousands of songs […] in the times to come”. So this is one question I would like Atul ji to respond to specifically – was his expectations that we shall reach, where we have reached today, and still going strong??

It was 30 march 2009 when this 1000th post was published. That was nine years ago. The world was a very different place from what it has become now. I was based at Jabalpur and I hoped to stay there in future as well. I was happily settled there. It turned out that got transferred to another state in a few months time. If I was not able to foresee what was going to happen in a few months time, then how was I going to see into the future of the blog. 🙂

I was then like a batsman who worries about where his next run is going to come from. By that time, I had worked out my standard strategy of posting 6 songs daily for three days followed by seven songs on the fourth day thus adding 25 songs every four day. Repeating the same process four times, that would give me 100 songs in 16 days. So I was happily clocking 100 songs every 16 days. Those were simple days when we had not thought about “debutant” movies, “YIPPEE” movies etc. Even the concept of contributions by regulars had not taken shape. We did not have the team of contributors that we now have. I did not even have my pets at that time that have become such an important part of my life for the last six- seven years.

The pages about list of songs that we take for granted now a days were not there at that time the 1000th post was published. The “yearwise list of songs” was introduced seven days later, on 6 april 2009, followed by “moviewise list of songs” on 19 april 2009.

Very few songs were covered till then, so deciding upon “new” songs to cover was quite simple and easy those days. I was able to cover my six to seven song a day fairly comfortably, by the first half of the day itself.

No, I never thought at that time that the blog would one day have 14000 songs in it. At that time, I thought that I would run out of songs to cover after I had covered around 2500 songs. 🙂

Song post number 2000 was a rail song posted on 27 september 2009. The blog by now has 90 rail songs. I still have at least one great rail song up my sleeve. It is lying in the drafts for last seven years. It is a kind of song that may be used for a future thousandth song.

The “music directorwise list of songs” was introduced on 3 november 2009 and thus the three important song lists were put in place a little after the posting of the 2000th song in the blog.

There has been this demand for singerwise list of songs as well. Even that may come up, if I could persuade myself to do that. 🙂

As far as Raja’s tendency to enrich English dictionary with words like ‘mind-bloggling’, ‘gangout’, etc is concerned, let me assure our readers that Raja has been at it even before this blog began. We have been together in a cricket forum since 2005 and it was then and there that he had coined a term called “Atulism” for my kind of humour. He seems to have inspired others in the blog and now we find others too coining terms like “YIPPEE”, “Atulites” etc. 🙂

Raja had written the writeups for the 3000th and 4000th posts in the blog. These two posts also happened to be the thousandth posts of Lata and Rafi respectively.

5000th post was unprecedented for the blog for the levels of planning that it involved. It too combined an artist’s personal milestone with blog milestone, but the artist was far lesser known that Lata and Rafi. This less known artist, viz Bulo C Rani, was the composer of the iconic qawwali “Hamen To Loot Liya Mil Ke Husn Waalon Ne“. This song was a long pending “farmaish” by many people.

The planning for this post began by the time the blog had around 4700 songs in it. Bulo C Rani was only on 21 songs at that time. His songs (most of them obscure) began to be posted in the blog with suspicious regularity and his 100th post coincided with the 5000th song in the blog on 13 november 2011.

This date, 13 november became an important date as far as thousandth posts for this blog are concerned. It was exactly one year later on 13 november 2012 saw the 7000th song being posted, though at that time this coincidence went unnoticed. It was only while we were planning for 9000th post that we realised that 13 november 2011 and 2012 had seen posting of 5000th and 7000th posts. So we went into an overdrive to ensure that the 9000th post was published on 13 november 2013.

The above observations also mean that the blog was covering 2000 songs per year from 2011 to 2013. This led to the blog achieving its peak strike rate of 4.63 songs per day when the 9000th post was published on 13 november 2013. Had we maintained this rate till today (2 february 2018), we would be on 16140 instead on 14000 !

We were unable to maintain that rate and we have fallen to a rate barely above 4 songs per day. But the fact that the blog still adds “new” songs daily (albeit at a lower rate) without fail means that we are going on and on and adding more songs.

Preparation for the 10000th song was quite a remarkable exercise involving tremendous teamwork and planning for nearly three weeks. All regulars of the blog wrote articles and they themselves were introduced through articles written by other regulars. That mega exercise then culminated into the posting of the 10000 th song that rewrote HFM history. The behind the story tales of the preparations and waiting for the 10000th post are fond memories that are still fresh in the minds of regulars despite the passage of more than three years.

The way the blog has evolved with time is something that neither I nor others would have visualised in the past. We nowadays interact online on whatsapp, email, facebook, phone etc. We have had several togethers, inadvertently coined “gangout” by Raja. They are in addition to bilateral meetings, of course.

I have attended just one “gangout” in December 2014 at Mumbai, which has been my only such meeting so far. I have had meetings with some regulars at Delhi, Nagpur, Lucknow etc as well.

The interactions with other regulars have led to several ideas that have been implemented in the blog. The list of songs (yearwise, moviewise, MD wise) were introduced as results of suggestions by Raja. The concept of YIPPEE movies came from Pradeep Raghunathan. Covering missing movies in the blog was an idea that came from Khyati Bhatt.

HFM related statistics that are available online (if any) are nowhere in the same league as cricket related statistics. I dream of the day when we will be able to have authentic statistics for artists the way we have authentic statistics from cricketers. Unlike cricket, where records are kept thanks to the British legacy of discipline in cricket, Indians have failed to keep authentic records of their history, including HFM history. Still, there are some diehard HFM fans, and some of them are our own regulars, who are helping collect hard to find details of HFM and putting them in one place for easy reference. We in this blog have covered all the available songs of KL Saigal and Suraiyya, and we are just a few songs short for artists like Naushad, SD Burman, OP Nayyar etc. Even in case of Rafi and Lata, we have already covered nearly 60 % of all their songs.

Whenever we post century (or thousandth) post of an artist, we try to give moviewise breakups of all their songs. For instance, I have given such breakups for Suraiyya, Rajinder Krishan, Naushad, OP Nayyar etc. My plan is to give such breakups for all artists who have more than 100 songs in the blog. That would be extremely useful statistical exercise in the field of HFM. So keep watching the blog in future when we add statistics for all major HFM artists.

We in this blog are extremely strong when it comes to making resolutions and sticking to them. We are more than one month into 2018 and we have managed to live up to the new year blog resolutions for 2018 so far. Even today (2 February 2018), the “debutant” movie (number 3820) has been introduced. So it is time now to introduce the YIPPEE movie of the day.

The YIPPEE movie of the day is ‘Geet Gaata Chal’ (1975). This movie was directed by Hiren Nag for Rajshree Productions, Bombay. This movie had Sachi, Sarika, Khyati (new discovey), Madan Puri, Manhar desai, Agha, Dhumal, Sundar, V Gopal, CS Dube, Madhup Sharma, Pardesi, Jugnu, Sriram, Surendra Singh, Prakash Mishra, Imtiaz Pathan, Junior Mehmood, Urmila Bhatt, Leela Mishra, Minu Mahtab, Saroj Borkar, Padma Khanna etc in it.

This movie had nine songs in it. Eight of these songs have been covered in the blog. Following are the details:

Song Title

Bachpan har gham se begaana hota hai 13857 2-Jan-2018
Mangal bhawan amangal haari 13997 1-Feb-2018

Here is the ninth and final song from this movie. This final song is a joie de vivre bailgaadi song where Sachin is seen joyously lip syncing this song while moving ever so slowly on a bullock cart, with Sarika too as a co passenger. They would take frequent breaks enroute showing that they were enjoying the journey rather than thinking about the destination. this archtypical Rajshree Production kind of bailgaadi songs were used in some subsequent Rajshree Productions movie as well. The most memorable to such bailgaadi song was Kaun disaa mein leke chalaa re batohiyaa from “Nadiya Ke Paar”(1982).

The song is sung by Jaspal Singh. Ravindra Jain is the lyricist as well as music director.

With this song, ‘Geet Gaata Chal’ (1975) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Song-Dharti meri maata pitaa aasmaan (Geet Gaata Chal)(1975) Singer-Jaspal Singh, Lyrics-Ravindra Jain, MD-Ravindra Jain

Lyrics

dharti meri maata pita aasmaan
o dharti meri maata pita aasmaan
mujhko to apna sa laage saara jahaan
dharti meri maata pita aasmaan

oonche oonche parwaton ki baadalon se hode
oonche oonche parwaton ki baadalon se hode
nadiya bahe re saare bandhanon ko tod
phoolo ki hansi mein basi hai meri jan
mujhko to apna sa lage saara jahaan
dharti meri maata pita aasmaan

yoon to meri ankhiyon ne dekhe kayi rang
yoon to meri ankhiyon ne dekhe kayi rang
man ko na bandha maine kisi ke bhi sang
jal ke oopar tairoon main hans ke samaan
mujhko to apna sa laage saara jahaan
dharti meri maata pita aasmaan
mujhko to apna sa laage saara jahaan
dharti meri maata pita aasmaan

Blog Day : 3490 Post No. : 14022

First of all, I have to express my gratitude to this blog once again, it is only because of this blog that am able to share this post here. Though I have already shared many posts earlier, but today the personality I am writing about is of such a great stature that it is my fortune and blessings of this blog that I am able to do this.

Today we remember Ramchandra Narayandutt Dwivedi whom we fondly admire and respect as ‘Kavi Pradeep’ or ‘Rashtra Kavi Pradeep’ on the anniversary of his birth. He was born on 6th February,1915 and passed away on 11th December,1998 leaving behind a great legacy or even I can say a ‘heritage’ – a national heritage of his immortal poems and his ‘voice’.

I am short of words to add an adjective to describe his ‘voice’, because it cannot be expressed in words. It is an altogether a very different experience or rather divine experience to listen the songs sung by him. For that matter I think people like me who were born in end sixties and seventies or may be little later and even extending to the eighties, must have in their childhood heard his voice/songs playing on loud speakers, radio and in the earlier years of TV in India.

I cannot forget “Aao Bachcho Tumhein Dikhaayein“, and “Ae Mere Watan Ke Logo“, one penned and sung by him and other penned by him, which were/are a ‘must’ on every Independence Day and Republic Day. And how rightly he said the value of ‘our hard fought freedom’ when he is talking to the new generation in this song “Hum Laaye Hain Toofaan Se Kishti Nikaal Ke’.

Then there are few songs which we used to listen when we grow up but can only understand their depth after we actually matured as adults. These are the philosophical song like “Dekh Tere Sansaar Ki Haalat“,  “Mukhda Dekh Le Praani“, “Pinjre Ke Panchhi Re“, “Doosron Ka Dukhdaa Door Karne Waale“, “Kabhi Dhoop Kabhi Chhaaon“, “Hum Ne Jag Ki Ajab Tasweer Dekhi“, “Koi Laakh Kare Chaturaayi“. Listening to these and songs sung by him have always given me a great motivation and inspiration other than giving peace to mind whenever I have felt like down with spirits or depressed and struggling with our day to day adversities.

He always wrote and sung with passion, pouring his heart and his feelings into his creations, and thus his songs whether patriotic, devotional or philosophical, when we listen to them, always take us to an altogether different ‘planet’ that is the magic of his words and his voice.

Like the song “Tere Dwaar Khadaa Bhagwaan“, I have never felt tired of listening to this song. I can listen to it many many times in one go. Then his song on the partition of India – “Aaj Ke Insaan Ko Ye Kya Ho Gaya“; one can just imagine the agony in his feelings and the ‘pain’ this ‘poet’ is going through on the degrading human values.

I would like to share here an incident which proves that if one gets a chance to listen to his songs they straight way take to one’s heart and mind forever and even the new generation cannot escape from his ‘passionate’ and ‘inspirational’ voice if they get that right atmosphere around where his songs are listened to. I was at Kota, in Rajasthan at that time in 1988-89. I had bought this compilation of Kavi Pradeep’s songs released by HMV. I presented this to one of my Senior Colleagues who was from Paudi Garhwal. He had a son and a daughter who was around 4-5 years old at that time.

After a gap of around 6-7 years when I was on tour to New Delhi I got a chance to visit this senior of mine and stay with them. As we were discussing his daughter came to me and said ‘Uncle, aap wahi Uncle ho na jinhone hamen Kavi Pradeep ji ki cassette di thi’.

What I want to put here is that if we the citizens of this country nurture good values, of course including the great heritage of our history, arts and culture, and pass them on to new generations, it will be certainly of a great help to instil in them the love for the nation and respect towards the great freedom fighters, soldiers of this country, the country – the land itself and our historical and cultural values.

Hindi movies already are doing great job in the service of nation and national integration. And Kavi Pradeep’s contribution in this cause is simply great and his poetry and songs need to be continuously passed on to the new generation to rouse patriotic values and love for the nation and its great historical heritage.

On this blog we always have this opportunity to share the works of such great persons and their art which they use as a ‘medium’ to reach people and in service of the ‘greater cause’ – ‘the nation’. And we have a long long way to go in this purpose of sharing his poetry /songs that he wrote for Hindi Movies. As per the ‘statistics’ page of this blog, we have till now posted only 167 (I hope this is the latest updated figures) out of the 531 songs he wrote for HFM.

Today I am sharing one of his songs which is written and sung by himself. This song, when I initially sent almost three years ago to Atul ji, I thought was a non-filmy song. As the link available then didn’t mention anything about this song. However, thanks to this book ‘Kavi Pradeep Ka Hindi Sahitya Mein Avdaan’ by Dr. Dinesh Chandra Awasthi which I got few months back and came to know that this song is actually from a ‘recent’ 1983 movie ‘Jai Baba Amarnath’ and not from a yesteryears movie or an NFS.

I like this song very much and it is ‘philosophical’ background song in the movie (as can be seen from the video of this song available now) and in the picturization of this song we can see Vikram Gokhale, Bina and others.

‘Jai Baba Amarnath’ was directed by BR Ishara for ‘King Movies’. It was produced by Badriprasad Joshi. It had Vikram Gokhale, Beena, Mahipal, BM Vyas, Surya Kumar, Anant Marathe, Maheshwari, Master Vikas, Mohan Choti, Meghna, Ratna Bhushan, Nayna Bhatt, Champshi Bhai, Ashalata, Bhagwan, Tun Tun, S Madan, Surekha Rane, Karunakar Pathak, Baiju Raja, Nanak Singh, Lakhan, Amit, Mishrilal, Hangama, Jaya Kaushalya, and Mahesh Desai.

The songs in this movie were sung by Kavi Pradeep, Mahendra Kapoor, Usha Khanna, Suresh Wadkar, Chandrani Mukerjee and Dilraj Kaur. The records were released by ‘Music India’. Sujit Sen and Subramaniam were Assistant Directors for this movie. SA Kadar was the Chief Assistant Director. Dahya Bhai was the Cameraman for this movie. The editing for this movie was done by LD Bhatia. Story of this movie was written by Pandit R Priyadarshi. Kavi Pradeep wrote the songs for this movie and music was composed by Usha Khanna.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 11.01.1983.

I have to confess here that I wished to write a detailed biographical write up (though I am not good in doing it like our senior members and other members) on Kavi Pradeep. I had actually started with it, but could not devote the time required, and so I am presenting a much briefer article about him. But that does not deprive us in enjoying this wonderful creation in his loving memory in our hearts. I will try to write his biographical sketch with more information about the movies he worked for in another article, as possible.

Let us now enjoy this philosophical yet motivational song, which is written and sung by Kavi Pradeep and composed by Usha Khanna. The movie ‘Jai Baba Amarnath’ makes its debut today on our blog.

Song – Udti Chidiya Behta Paani (Jai Baba Amarnath) (1983) Singer – Kavi Pradeep, Lyrics – Kavi Pradeep, MD – Usha Khanna

Lyrics

udti chidiya..aa..aa
behta paani..ee..ee
inki kahaani kisne jaani
udti chidiyaa..aa..aa
behta paani..ee..ee
inki kahaani ee kisne jaani
duniya waalo suno
isi ko kehte zindagani
udti chidiya
behta paani
inki kahaani kisne jaani

jeewan to hai ek ramta jogi re
bhatakta jogi
kise pata kiski shaam
kal kahaan hogi re
kal kahaan hogi
dharti waalo suno
ye hain shabd aasmaani
udti chidiya..aa
behta paani.ee
inki kahaani  kisne jaani

bada hi ajeeb hai ye
duniya ka mela
duniya ka mela
karodon ki bheed mein hai
har koi akela
yahaan har koi akela
sun’ne waalo suno
ye hai santon ki vaani
udti chidiya..aa
behta paani..ee
inki kahaani  kisne jaani

sansaar ke hain bade
tedhe medhe raaste
tedhe medhe raaste
ye tamaam raaste hain
hum sab ke waaste
hum sab ke waaste
chalne waalo suno safar mein
rakhna saavdhani
udti chidiya..aa
behta paani..ee
inki kahaani..ee kisne jaani
udti chidiya..aa
behta paani..ee
inki kahaani..ee kisne jaani

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

—————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 63# Khayyam Saab’s 91st birth anniversary
———————————————–—————————

Today 18th February 2018 (born on 18th February 1927) is the Ninety-first birth anniversary of Mohammed Zahur “Khayyam” Hashmi Saab, better known as Khayyam Saab to all of us.

On this occasion here is a rare song from the movie ‘Meena Kumari Ki Amar Kahaani-1979’. Music of this film was composed by Khayyam Saab.

‘Meena Kumari Ki Amar Kahaani – 1979’ was directed by Sohrab Modi for ‘Shaili Films, Bombay’. It had Dolly (as ‘Meena Kumari’), Bharat Bhushan, Madhu Malini, Meena Irani, Sunita Irani, Sunita Dheer, Twinkle, Jayshree T., Bandini, Jagdeep, Keshto Mukherjee, Ratna, Javed Khan, Bina Baba, Zery, Kedar Sehgal, Baby Parveen, and Sona (as ‘Madhubala’).

Lyrics of this film were by Afzal Shadab (all songs) and Music was composed by Khayyam Saab.

As per information available in HFGK this film had two songs. (However as mentioned in HFGK this film also included some dialogues and songs from some of the films of Meena Kumari viz. Azad’1955, Sharda’1957, Chirag Kahaan Roshni Kahaan’1959, Ghazal’1964, Chandan Ka Palna’1967 and Pakeezah’1971).

This film was based on Meena Kumari’s life and was passed by censor board on 28.11.1979.
I am neither much aware about this movie nor I have watched it, so I can not say much about this movie and its box office performance.
I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

I was quite in dilemma while deciding a song for today’s occasion, because there are still many many beautiful gems composed by Khayyam Saab that are yet to be posted on the blog here.

However, while going through the list of movies for which Khayyam Saab has composed music, I find that this is the only movie from the decade of 1971-1980 that is yet to make an entry on the blog. So today we get introduced to this movie on the blog.

During 1971-1980 we have the following movies of which the music was composed by Khayyam Saab;

Khayyam’s movies of 1971-1980
Name of movie Year
Pyaase Dil 1974
Sankalp 1974
Mutthi Bhar Chawal 1975
Sandhya 1975
Kabhie Kabhie 1976
Shankar Hussain 1977
Trishul 1978
Chambal Ki Kasam 1979
Khaandaan 1979
Meena Kumari Ki Amar Kahaani * 1979
Noorie 1979
Thodisi Bewafai 1980

(* making a debut on the blog today)

Out of the two songs in this movie one song is a solo song sung by Mahendra Kapoor and lip synced by Bharat Bhushan on the screen and being posted here today.
The actresses Dolly and Sona who played the role of Meena Kumari and Madhubala in the film are also seen in the picturization of this song with others.

The other song is a duet sung by Asha Bhonsle and Lata Mangeshkar.

Wishing Khayyam Saab, a ‘Very Happy Birthday’ today and a ‘healthy and peaceful’ life ahead, let us now enjoy this song!!!

Song-Wafaa e ishq mein khoye jahaan milte hain (Meena Kumari Ki Amar Kahaani)(1979) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-Afzal Shadab, MD-Khayyam

Lyrics

Jo udaatey thhe laakhon ki neendein
Ab wo zere zameen so gaye
Haay mitti ki aagosh mein
Kaise kaise haseen so gaye

Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain
Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain
Bhatakti rooh ke ae ae ae
Bhatakti rooh ke
Aksar nishaan miltey hain aen
Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain

Wo badnaseeb jo
Duniya se naamuraad gaye
Wafaa ke maare huye
De ke apni yaad gaye
Nazar se chhupke
wo hi meharbaan miltey hain
Bhatakti rooh ke ae ae ae
Bhatakti rooh ke
Aksar nishaan miltey hain ae
Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain

Jo baazi haar gaye hain
Yahaan muhabbat mein
Qaraar unko nahin milta
Apni jannat mein
Sukoon e dil ke liye
Bezubaan miltey hain
Bhatakti rooh ke ae ae ae
Bhatakti rooh ke
Aksar nishaan miltey hain ae
Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain

Hawaa mein udtaa huaa
Inka aashiyaana hai ae
Wahaan pe pardanasheenon ka ab
Thhikaana hai ae ae ae
Jahaan galey se zameen aasmaan miltey hain
Bhatakti rooh ke ae ae ae
Bhatakti rooh ke
Aksar nishaan miltey hain ae
Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain

Chhupaa huaa hai koi raaz
Inke aane mein
Ke jaise bhool gaye hon
Ye kuchh zamaane mein
Zameen pe aise kayi raazdaan miltey hain
Bhatakti rooh ke ae ae ae
Bhatakti rooh ke
Aksar nishaan miltey hain ae
Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain
Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain
Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain

Blog Day : 3508 Post No. : 14096

Today, 24th February is the birth anniversary of Talat Mehmood (born 1924).

There are approximately 650 film songs identified, as being sung by him. It is a known fact that during the decade of 1950s, Talat Sb spent more of his energies in trying to establish himself as an actor-singer. He had the presence and the looks of a leading hero, plus a voice that at one time had stolen the hearts of film goers and listeners. But the on-screen combination somehow did never strike a rapport with the audience, getting only a lukewarm reception at the box office. Rising from the mid 1940s along with the other mainstream singers, he allowed his ratings as a playback singer to falter, in his effort to be a singing start. Now, it is just a matter of speculation how the history of Hindi films and Hindi film music could have been different, had some different choices had been made by Talat Sb.

In this context, it is very interesting to note that the decade of 1950 evolved in the manner it did – given that some leading singers made some different choices. The other names that come to mind are Mukesh, and Kishore Kumar. Mukesh also focused his energies on becoming an actor, for a good part of the early half of 1950s. Similarly, Kishore Kumar did not focus on being a dedicated playback singer – he also first went the actor route to establish himself in the industry. It is recognized that he was successful to a great extent to establish himself as an actor of some merit and popular following, with a continuous string of films that mattered. But even for him, his career as an actor eclipsed by mid 1960s, and his decision to come into his own as a playback singer in late 1960s, did wonders of a different type in his career. And so the debate about ‘What if. . .’ applied to these three singers is interesting, but of course a moot exercise. The history of Hindi film music is what it is. The choices had been made.

Today’s song has been sent in by Avinash ji. The film is ‘Samaapti’ from 1949. The film is produced at the Calcutta center, under the banner of Uma Productions, and is directed by Amar Mullick. The star cast of the film is briefly listed in the Geet Kosh as Talat Mehmood, Bharti Devi, Heeralal and Sunder. Given that Talat Mehmood is starring in this film, this song most likely is picturized on himself.

The film has 8 songs listed. Music direction is by Timir Baran. The lyricist name is listed for six of the songs – Pandit Bhushan. Two of these songs, including this one, are solo renderings by Talat Sb, two are solo songs by Suprabha Sarkar, and two are duets of Talat and Suprabha Sarkar. Information about the lyricists and singers of the remaining two songs is not available.

A light hearted song of happiness, that tells about the heart singing like a bird – rendered so effortlessly by Talat Sb. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Mann Ki Maina Bol Rahi Hai (Samaapti) (1949) Singer – Talat Mehmood, Lyrics – Pandit Bhushan, MD – Timir Baran

Lyrics(Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)

mann ki maina bol rahi hai
boley mann ki maina
mann ki maina bol rahi hai
boley mann ki maina
uski boli har leti hai
mere mann ka chaina aa
mere mann ka chaina aa aa

kisi ke meethe baina
bol rahi hai
boley mann ki maina
mann ki maina bol rahi hai
boley mann ki maina

wahaan ek bholi..ee matwaali..ee
sundar nain nachaaye
wahaan ek bholi..ee matwaali..ee
sundar nain nachaaye
koyal ki si pal pal kooke
hans hans phool khilaaye
koyal ki si pal pal kooke
hans hans phool khilaaye
use dekhne ko..o
ab mere
tadap rahe hai naina
bol rahi hai
boley mann ki maina
mann ki maina bol rahi hai
boley mann ki maina

Blog Day : 3510 Post No. : 14101

It’s not easy writing this. I’ve written many posts here on the death anniversaries of various artistes – but in all those cases, I’ve had the benefit of distance of time from the event. Even if it is the first death anniversary, at least 365 days have passed since. That does make a difference. Today’s post isn’t a death anniversary post. It’s a tribute post, of course, but the artiste in question has just left us a few hours ago! And we are still in mourning. Which is why I write this post now with a lot of sadness in my heart.

This morning, when I woke up, I got the news that was like a bolt from the blue – that Sridevi, one of the most famous and popular actresses of our times, was no more. When I checked my whatsapp messages today, a regular morning routine, there was a message from one of my nieces – “This Sridevi news has left me so disturbed. She was my all-time favourite”.

I immediately checked Twitter, which is my usual go-to source for latest news. And sure enough – it was real, not a fake news item. Twitter is notorious for fake news being spread – but this time, unfortunately, there was nothing fake about this. Tributes were pouring in on Twitter.

I took a deep breath. It all seemed so unbelievable, it took me a while to digest the news. Sridevi  had died a few hours earlier of a cardiac arrest in Dubai. She had gone to attend a family wedding – it turned out to be her last day on this earth. There were pictures of her from just a few hours earlier – she looked just fine. In fact, she looked more than fine, she looked gorgeous – like she’d always looked. I was not aware of any health complaints of any sort. So then how did this suddenly happen?

There are theories floating around, some to do with her diet, pills etc. I do not want to discuss any of this here – it is all in the realm of speculation anyway, and I am sure we will get to hear more about it in the days to come.  Right now, all I know is that my thoughts have been with her all day today. I can see Sridevi’s face right in front of my eyes –superbly expressive, that twinkle in her eye, that smile. I can see her dancing, whether as a Naagin, or doing a break-dance in Michael Jackson style – completely at ease with both.

I can see her portraying a docile, innocent Anju one minute, and a chaalu Chaalbaaz Manju the very next. That is / was Sridevi. She could do both sadness and madness to such perfection within minutes – and you wouldn’t be able to say she was acting. No wonder she won many millions of fans all over the world. And not just Hindi film fans. Sure, she reigned as superstar for almost a decade in the Hindi film industry but her career in the South Indian film industry was not just longer, it was also probably far richer.

There will be many obituary and tribute pieces written for Sridevi in the days to come. As is common, her entire life will be detailed – from her early days to her final ones. Her career will be discussed in great detail, as will her personal life. I choose not to add to the repetitive element of these. I am no expert on Sridevi anyway – and anyone who wants a lot of facts on her is better advised to seek out one of those other sources. As is my wont, I will discuss Sridevi here from a personal perspective.

Hmm, where do I start? When did I first hear of Sridevi? I must admit that I first heard of Sridevi only in the late 1970s, though she had already become a popular name in South Indian cinema for some years by then. I lived in Eastern India at that time, where the exposure to South Indian cinema was very limited – and I’d heard of very few actors and actresses of the South.  Of course I’d heard of the legends (Sivaji Ganesan, MGR, Gemini Ganesan, Savitri, KR Vijaya etc.) but of the then-current lot, I’d not heard of many. Yes, I’d heard of Kamalahasan and Rajinikanth, though I’d not seen any of their films. As for heroines, I got to hear names like Sripriya, Srividya, Sujatha. And Sridevi. To me, the name Sridevi was just one of these names at that time.

Around that time, South Indian producers once again began to show interest in making Hindi films. Of course earlier too they had made a lot of films but the pace had slackened in the 1970s. It suddenly began picking up towards the end of the decade. Understandably these producers wanted to work with actors they were familiar with. So, just like Jamuna and KR Vijaya in an earlier generation, we got to see new South Indian faces entering the Hindi film industry.

Thus, in 1979, we got news that two big-name South Indian actresses would be seen in Hindi films. Jayaprada would be seen in a film called ‘Sargam’ (1979), and Sridevi would be seen in a film called ‘Solvaan Saawan’ (1978). ‘Sargam’ became a huge hit – and set Jayaprada on her way to success in the Hindi film industry. ‘Solvaan Saawan’, on the other hand, just came and went – and with that seemed to sink Sridevi’s future too in Hindi films. She simply seemed to have disappeared from the Hindi film scene.

For a while, I forgot about the existence of Sridevi, even as she was becoming a progressively more popular and successful star in the South. As it is, Hindi films rolled merrily on – with established heroines like Zeenat Aman, Hema, Parveen and Reena Roy, and a new set of heroines like Poonam Dhillon, Rati Agnihotri, Padmini Kolhapure, Anita Raaj and Deepti Naval.

By then, I was getting increasingly busy with my studies and was not able to keep pace with Hindi movies.

Then came 1983 and ‘Himmatwaala’ happened.  Sridevi returned with a bang. This film, in which she starred opposite Jeetendra, turned out to be a smash hit, with the songs becoming super-duper hits. Ironically for me, these songs only hastened my distaste for songs of that period, a distaste that had been formed with songs like “Angrezi Mein Kehte Hain”, “. . .Chaaye Pe Bulaaya Hai” becoming big hits. From then on, I almost completely shut myself off from Hindi films for a while.

‘Himmatwaala’ was one in a string of films from South India, many of which were commercially successful during the 1980s. Many of them starred Sridevi, Jeetendra and Jayaprada. Some starred Rajesh Khanna. But I had got a mental block about these films. So while Sridevi and Jayaprada were becoming big stars in Hindi cinema, I refused to watch their films. Years later, around 2007, I did watch ‘Himmatwaala’ on TV, keeping my expectations very low. Must admit it wasn’t all THAT bad!

Despite this mental block, I did watch the odd Sridevi film. The first one I remember watching was ‘Sadma’ (1983). I remember thinking “Oh, so THIS is Sridevi!”.  I liked her in the film. Then I watched ‘Tohfa’ (1984). Only because it was being screened in our local club and my friends persuaded me to watch it. I went in with very low expectations – and was therefore not very disappointed. Again, I liked Sridevi in the film. But then I’m not a particularly big fan of Jayaprada. So in comparison, I’d any day prefer to watch a Sridevi film. And then I watched ‘Moondram Pirai’ (1982), the Tamil classic – of which ‘Sadma’ is a remake. Apart from these three films, I didn’t watch a single Sridevi film in the 80s.

Thankfully her career wasn’t dependent on my taste at the time 🙂 otherwise it would not have taken off at all. She kept going from strength to strength. By 1986, when she would be seen in ‘Sultanat’, ‘Aakhri Raasta’, ‘Jaanbaaz’, ‘Karma’ and ‘Nagina’ – all big movies, I realized that whether I was watching her movies or not, the whole of India seemed to be watching them. And loving her.

I realized that though there were other heroines like Meenakshi Seshadri and Dimple Kapadia who had the odd hit film, and Jayaprada was still very much in the mix, Sridevi had gone ahead of them all. She was now probably the No.1 heroine of the time. (Rekha, by then, was in a league of her own).

Then in 1987, Shekhar Kapur’s ‘Mr. India’ hit the screens – and that probably sealed it. Anyone who had any doubts about Sridevi’s rank in the industry was effectively shut up by this film. Her “Hawa Hawaii” song was a rage all over India. And then there was “Kaate Nahin Kat’te Ye Din Ye Raat”, which was Sridevi all the way.

Around this time, it was not inconceivable that a film would run on Sridevi’s name alone. She had earned that superstar status. On the male front, Amitabh Bachchan in the mid to late 1980s wasn’t having a good run. And none of the other male stars were quite superstar material yet. Sridevi was.

Yet she continued to act in a remarkable number of poor-to-average films – such was the quality of films in the 1980s! You can hardly blame the actor for that. You were lucky if there was one memorable film in ten. Most films could be forgotten the moment you stepped out of the hall.

Of her other well-known films, two from 1989 come to mind – ‘Chaandni’ and ‘Chaalbaaz’. I remember ‘Chaandni’ becoming a superhit. I’m not so sure about ‘Chaalbaaz’ – though it is one of my favourite Sridevi films. She plays a double role – and how. The film, a remake of ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’ (1972), is a hilarious comedy, completely owned by Sridevi.

1991 saw ‘Lamhe’ – another landmark film in her career. Once again, Sridevi was seen in a double role. Mother and daughter. A very different sort of film. I think ‘Lamhe’ failed at the box-office – it was a storyline that the audience found difficult to accept. But that does not take away from Sridevi’s performance.

1992 saw ‘Khuda Gawaah’, again a double role for Sridevi. Mother and daughter again. I wonder if any heroine has done more double roles than Sridevi. Fabulous scenes of Afghanistan, fabulous acting by Sridevi.

1993 had the resounding and expensive flop, ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja’. After this, her career took a dip – and after ‘Judaai’ (1997), she was next to be seen in a lead role, goodness, 15 years later, in ‘English Vinglish’ (2012). And what a performance! It was SUCH a pleasure to see her in this film, putting up such a mature performance, that I was left wondering what might’ve been in the preceding 15 years.

Oh, one thing. I saw each one of the films I’ve mentioned above only after 1995. Yes, even her 1980s hits. Like I said before, I studiously stayed away from 1980s films at the time they were released. Not just Sridevi films, but all 1980s films. In the process, I might have missed some good ones too. I caught up with many of them later. After 1995.

And as I watched Sridevi, I could understand why she had become such a superstar. Beyond her looks and her amazing dancing ability, there was a fine actor. Not everyone realizes this – but her ability to take a scene to a different level altogether, just with her facial expressions, a roll of the eyes, a smile from the side of her mouth, all of this added to producing a memorable performance. And I daresay unlike the male superstars, her mannerisms didn’t come across as clichéd, even if she repeated them. She only endeared herself even more to the audience.

Yes, I could fully understand why Sridevi was a superstar. But ironically I realized this only after she had conceded the top spot to Madhuri Dixit, herself a deserving No.1. Many folks make a big deal of the Sridevi – Madhuri rivalry. I’ve never cared about it – each actor has his/her time and ups and downs. Both Sridevi and Madhuri were terrific actors and entertainers – and that is the main reason they were loved so much by the public. Anyway, the timing when the realization hit me, is irrelevant. What’s important is she is loved by millions of people. The outpouring of grief today is testimony to this. Whether you are a superstar or not, is secondary.

Let’s move on to the song for today.

I’ve picked this song from ‘Chaalbaaz’ (1989). It’s one of my favourite Sridevi films. I have watched it multiple times – and can still watch it. A ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’ (1972) remake, Sridevi here plays Anju (the docile one) and Manju (the chaalu one). The male leads are played by Sunny Deol and Rajinikanth. Though the film stars Anupam Kher, Rohini Hattangadi and Shakti Kapoor too, the film belongs to Sridevi. The dialogues are hilarious – check them out on youtube.

The song for today showcases, to some extent, why Sridevi was so popular. Just look at her bindaas dancing, just look at the expressions on her face. This is classic Sridevi. You cannot but love her in this song. Although it features Sunny Deol too, and a whole host of supporting dancers, Sridevi clearly steals the show. I’ve watched the song five times already today. It’s one way of remembering Sridevi. I am sure you will like the song too. Just observe Sridevi through the song – she is having so much fun, this song will just lift your spirits.

Lyrics have been provided by Avinashji. He was kind enough to offer to write them up, as soon as he got to know that I was planning to do this write-up. Thanks a lot, Avinashji.

Thank you for all the wonderful memories, Sridevi. You will always remain in our hearts.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
—————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 64# Singer – Kishore Kumar
———————————————–—————————-

In my opinion, Kishore Kumar’s voice reached a different and special plane altogether during late 1960s vis a vis his voice prior to earlier years pre “Padosan”(1968)/ “Aradhana”(1969).

Kishore Kumar retained that “something special” in his voice for the rest of his career. His voice was at its ‘versatile peak’ during this phase of his career.

Kishore Kumar was popularly known as the voice of ‘Rajesh Khanna’ during 1970s, but he was also singing for most other actors, be they established stars of the time or newcomers.

Today’s song is one such special song. I became aware of this song only in September 2016.

It was during my stay at Nagpur that I had marked this song for presentation here on the blog. When I checked HFGK for this movie songs, I discovered that this song had two versions viz ‘happy’as well as ‘sad’. However, at that time only the sad version of this song was available, so I forwarded the movie link to my friend so that he could make the fast version of the song availabl in time for Holi of 2017. But somehow it did not materialize.

Later on, due to change in my job location it got delayed. It was just about five weeks back that I requested our beloved Raja Saab to upload video of this song and he, as he always does, was kind enough to respond to my request and he has uploaded both the video versions of this song. (Thank you, Raja Saab, for the videos of both versions of this song).

Meanwhile, I dscovered that audio of the ‘happy’ version was also available on YT.

This is a song celebrating ‘Holi’ – the festival of colors – and thus today on the occasion of ‘Holi’ let us enjoy this song from the ‘1975’ movie ‘Andheraa’.

‘Andheraa-1975’ was directed by Tulsi Ramsay and Shyam Ramsay for their home production under the banner of ‘Ramsay Films, Bombay’.
It was produced by F.U. Ramsay who also wrote the story of this movie.

The star cast of this movie includes Sameer, Vani Ganpati, Surendra Kumar, Imtiaz, Helen, Satyen Kappu, Krishan Dhawan, Mukri, Dulari, Shekhar Purohit, Kumud Tripathi, Tuntun, Heeralal, Murad, Kukku, Arvind Pandya, Major Anand, Madhu, Habib, Moolchand, Seema Kapoor, Ashoo and others.

Dialogues for this movie were written by Kafeel Azar. Shyam Ramsay was the Chief Assistant Editor and Arjun Ramsay was the Associate Director.
Editing was done by Bal Korde.
Kumar Ramsay was the Executive Producer for this movie and he also wrote the Screenplay of this movie.

This movie had four songs in it and lyrics for all these songs were penned by Gulshan Bawra. Music for this movie was composed by Sonik-Omi.
All the songs are solo songs two by Kishore Kumar (one in two versions) and other two by Asha Bhonsle.

As mentioned above today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar and it has two versions ‘Happy’and ‘Sad’ (or Fast and slow 🙂 ).

Let us now enjoy this song!!!

(more than the fast version I like the slow version and its tune grows up on one as one listens to it repeatedly).

Wishing all readers and members of this blog a ‘very happy, peaceful, safe and colorful Holi 2018 …!!!

With this song, “Andhera”(1975) makes its debut in the blog.

The novel “Parineeta” penned by Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay has been used in several movies in Hindi as well as in other languages. Some movies had the same title, viz Hindi movies “Parineeta”(1953) and “Parineeta”(2005). Then there have been other movies where the film title was different.

“Sankoch”(1976) was a Hindi movie which was based on the novel “Parineeta”. This movie was directed by Anil Ganguly for Suyog Films, Bombay.

The movie had Jeetendra, Sulakshana Pandit, Vikram, A K Hangal, Om Shivpuri, Aruna Irani, I S Johar, Dulaari, Urmila Bhatt, Baby Chintu, Ramesh Deo, Seema, Roohi, Jankidas, Lalita Kumari, Prreti Ganguly, Dinesh Hingoo, Keshto Mukherji, Birbal, Arvind Rathod, H L Pardesi, Shaukat Bharti, Shail Chaturvedi etc in it.

The movie had four songs in it. With time these songs have ended up becoming quite rare.

One song, arguably the most well known song from the movie has been covered in the blog.

Today (2 match 2018) is the 85th birthday of Anandji (2 march 1933) of Kalyanji Anandji music director duo. On this occasion, here is a song from “Sankoch”(1976). This song is sung by Kishore Kumar. M G Hashmat is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

HFGK counts this song as one song. This song figures in the movie twice and the lyrics are different in the two occasions. The song gets played while the husband-wife duo of Jeetendra and Sulakshana Pandit are shown having one of their countless disagreements.

This song is one that I do not recall having heard before. It is a nice song to listen to and it quickly grows upon the listener.

We take this opportunity to wish Anandji Veerji Shah a very happy 85th birthday and we wish him many more happy returns of the day.

Blog Day : 3515 Post No. : 14119

Regulars know that we in this blog are pursuing two new year resolutions with missionary zeal- one is posting a “debutant” movie song and another is posting a “YIPPEE” movie song.

We are into the first week of march 2018, and we have so far stuck to these new year resolutions. This is a proof that we in the blog are far more serious about our new year resulutions that majority of people. 🙂

Posting a “debutant” movie song is a relatively rather straight forward matter. I need to look for movies that are not yet represented. We still have a couple to thousands movies (at least) that are yet to make their debuts in the blog so finding one “debutant” movie song daily is not much of a challenge.

Posting a “YIPPEE” movie song daily is increasingly becoming challenging through. Unlike “debutant” movie song mission, “”YIPPEE” mission requires that all but one song of the movie to be YIPPEED must have been covered. Moreover, we need to have a list of such YIPPIable” movie available with us. Thirdly, that missing song should be available.

Let us leave aise the unavailable final song movies. The movies where the final songs are available also cannot be discussed just like that. Many of these songs turn out to be special songs requiring special treatment on special occasions. For example, I had a few songs waiting to be YIPPEED because their final song was a Holi festival song. Yesterday, on the occasion of Holi, I used up one song song to finally ensure that “Ek Gaaon Ki Kahaani”(1957) got YIPPEED yesterday (on 2 march 2018).

It is very essential for us to keep posting songs to make sure that more and more movies become YIPPIable. For the last few days, I have been unable to devote much time on the blog and I was content covering the “debutant” and “YIPPEE” movie songs and I did not bother making more movies YIPPIable.

So today (3 march 2018), I found myself paying the price. 🙂 I was struggling to pick songs that I could use today. I picked one song, but that song was so special that I decided that it had to be used on a special occasion. then I looked at another song. I listened to it and realised that this song was no less special and it also deserved its special writeup. Then I looked at another YIPPIable movie, but i found the lyrics of the final song almost undecipherable and so that song and movie too had to be discarded from consideration. There were other songs too but they could not have been touched for some special reasons or the other.

It was evening and 7 AM and I began to despair. I resolved that I would not let that situation come if I somehow managed to find a suitable YIPPIABLE for for today.

It was after 7 PM in the evening that a song came to my rescue. This song was sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala in the past and he had reminded me a few days back that this song was the final song from the movie. My record showed that this movie had two songs left to be covered. This song turned out to be a multiple version song ! So this song indeed fitted the bill.

That is not all. Listening to the song made me realise that there are some divine forces at work as far as this blog is concerned. This song is a “song with a message” and it is a message that I was in need of being reminded of. This song tells us that when we feel helpless then we should pray to the Almighty and he will show the way. Now in Hindi movies, we have so many songs where people are seen “remonstrating with the Almighty” where people are seen trying to shame/ abuse the Almighty. We have lots of such songs in Hindi movies as well as in this blog. Personally I regard these songs are songs of people living in denial which is quite common in our parts of the world. We do no work hard enough/ smart enough/ long enough and then we tend to find a scapegoat to blame for our inadequacy. The Almighty is that scapegoat in a large number of such situations.

It is my firm belief that if you work hard enough/ smart enough/ long enough, then, with a little bit of luck in your favour, you will get what you desrve. I like and subscribe to the comparison of our destiny being like a bank locker. This locker has two keys and both keys must be applied simulutaneously for our destiny to get unlocked. The key with us is work, the key with the bank manager (Almighty) is luck. When we remonsrtate the Almighty for our failures, then it is mostly a case where the Almighty is used his key but the remonstrator had not bothered to use his/her key (working hard enough/ smart enough/ long enough). If someone belives that Almighty is responsible for his/ her miseries then I have little sympathy for such people.

Coming to the song under discussion, I find the song quite a nice and soothing song. It is a philosophical song and a song with a message. And it is a song that will give strenght to people who may be feeling low in life at the moment.

In a somewhat lighter vein, I must say that I was feeling low because I was not able to find a YIPPIable song for the day and this song came to my rescue. It was like the Almghty coming to our rescue with just the perfect song ! We are using our key and the almighty used his key just in the nick of time. our thanks goes to the Almighty who hepled us. It proves that the almighty too likes to help people who are silently going about their tasks. 🙂

The song has two versions. One version is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and chorus. This song is lip synced by Om Shivpuri playing a Swami in front of his disciples. Only the audio of the other version is available. it is sung by Mahendra Kapoor, Asha Bhonsle and chorus.

Bharat Vyas is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.

Lyrics (including the devnagri lyrics) of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala. The movie, in case I failed to mention it earlier, is “Karm”(1977). This movie was produced and directed by B R Chopra for B R Productins, Bombay. The movie had Rajesh Khanna, Vidya Sinha, Shabana Azmi, Ifthikhar, Asrani, Om Shivpuri, Achla Sachdev, Manmohan Krishn, Pinchoo Kapoor, Nana Palsikar, S N Bannerji, Jagdis Raj, Keshav Rana, Nazeer Kashmiri, Master Bittu, Bobby Grewal, Jankidas, Madhu Chauhan, Sudha Shivpuri, Seema, R S Chopra, Sahgal, Sunil Dhawan, Abhimanyu Sharma, Prem Sagar etc, with guest appearances by Prema Narayan, Roopesh Kumar, Dines Thakur and Naaz.

Blog Day : 3520 Post No. : 14136

There are many artists for whom I’ve written posts here, remembering them on their birth or death anniversaries. But there are two artists who have featured more than others in this regard. I remember them every day anyway – so on their anniversary it is only a matter of a different intensity. I am grateful to them every single day for their legacy, the treasure trove they have left us behind with. They are long gone now from this world – coincidentally they went within a few months of each other – but they remain, and will always remain, in my heart. And not just my heart, but millions of hearts. Such is the love we have for them, such is the hold they have over us.

I am of course talking about two giants of the industry – Rafi Saab and Sahir Ludhianvi.

Today happens to be the 97th birth anniversary of Sahir – and here I am, writing yet another post in his memory. I have already written many posts on him, so I expect this will be a short one. At least, by my standards. 🙂

From all accounts, Rafi Saab and Sahir were like chalk and cheese. Rafi Saab is reported always having a smile on his lips, a total lack of ego, easy to work with, a generally non-controversial nature – and was one of the most-loved artistes in the industry.

In contrast, Sahir was seen as egoist, not the easiest person to work with. He was seen as often being bitter and rebellious. He had his fair share of controversies – and differences with other artistes. It’s also fair to say that while everyone acknowledged his genius as a poet and lyricist, he didn’t exactly endear himself to one and all.

And yet both of them have a special place in my heart. They were masters of their craft, and when they executed it, whether through the written word (Sahir) or through his voice (Rafi Saab), the words went straight to my heart.

Since this is a post for Sahir’s anniversary, I will keep it to Sahir from here on.

Sahir needs no introduction to anyone here. And if he does, there are far better sources to discuss him than this post, so I would recommend checking out any of them. Here I will only talk briefly about why I love Sahir so much. It goes without saying that Sahir’s poetry (which often found its way in his lyrics) was in a class of its own. In fact, he often dumbed down (simplified) his poetry to make it more understandable for film-going audiences.

Much of Sahir’s poetry is understandably in Urdu – and his lyrics for film songs too have a strong Urdu slant to them. As a big fan of Urdu, I thoroughly enjoy listening to Sahir’s poetry and lyrics, even if I don’t always understand them. 🙂 But if it were only Urdu that attracted me to him, that would be at one level only. After all, I have a great regard for Shakeel Badayuni too – his lyrics were also often Urdu-based, and second to none.

No, it is more than just Urdu that attracts me. It is the poet himself – Sahir, the person.

To the world, his bitterness (‘talkhi‘), his moodiness, his ego, his sharp tongue might have made him intolerable. To me, I think it is these very qualities that helped him write the poetry he did. You cannot be dispassionate, you cannot be without fire in your belly – and write rousing poetry. It just doesn’t work. An actor might be able to completely keep his persona behind and immerse himself in a role the moment the director screams “Action”. After all, he is an actor – his job is to be somebody he isn’t in real life.

On the contrary, for a poet, his writing is nothing but an expression of himself and his creativity. And that creativity is a function of his mind, heart and soul. So it is only natural that how he thinks or feels will get reflected in his writing. It is possible to of course separate the two – and seasoned poets do – but when the poetry is in sync with the mood, it probably flows much more naturally. I’m guessing this – I’m no poet. 🙂

So Sahir throwing his feelings into his poetry is something I totally approve of. Now, to the content itself.

In his inimitable style, he wrote on a variety of topics. But he is most identified with having a strong opinion on social issues of the day – and never hesitating to express his opinion. He often used his poetry as a medium to convey a strong message. Sometimes showing a mirror to society, sometimes questioning the government of the day. Sometimes exposing hypocrisy, sometimes calling for revolution. Whatever it was, he was not just another poet content to write some lyrics and get paid for them. He was socially sensitive – and clearly the ills in society bothered him deeply. And this is one of the main reasons I SO love Sahir. How I wish we had more poets like him today, with so much awareness and concern for the plight of the common man!

He has written about injustice in society (“Samaaj Ko Badal Daalo”), about the need for unity in a fractured society (“Tu Hindu Banega Na Musalmaan Banega“), about women’s plight in India (“Aurat Ne Janam Diya Mardon Ko”), about hope (“Na Munh Chhupa Ke Jiyo”, “Ponchh Kar Ashq Apni Aankhon Se“, “Wo Subah Kabhi To Aayegi”) and despair (“Ye Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaaye To Kya Hai“, “Jinhen Naaz Hai Hind Par Wo Kahaan Hain“, “. . .Rehne Ko Ghar Nahin Hai, Sara Jahaan Hamaara“).

For someone who had a grounding in Urdu, he could write beautiful bhajans like “Tora Mann Darpan Kehlaaye“, “Prabhu Tero Naam“, “Allah Tero Naam“, “Meri Sun Le Araj Banwaari“,  and the immortal “Aan Milo Aan Milo Shyam Saanwre“.

Then there is the philosophical Sahir too, exemplified in songs like “Aage Bhi Jaane Na Tu“.

A recurring theme in his writing is the mother-child relationship, maybe based on his own experiences in life. It is well-known that he was particularly close to his mother – and chose her above his much more affluent father when he had to make a choice. So we see beautiful lyrics on mother-child in ‘Dhool Ka Phool’ (“Tu Mere Pyaar Ka Phool Hai“), ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’ (“Tere Bachpan Ko“), ‘Trishul’ (“Tu Mere Saath Rahega Munne“)  – and I am sure some other films too.

Then there is the qawwaali Sahir. He excelled in them, with the qawwaalis of ‘Barsaat Ki Raat’, ‘Dharamputra’ and ‘Taj Mahal’ showcasing just some of his work.

And then there is the romantic Sahir. Yes, while he wrote about all other aspects of life, he did not come up short on what was bread-and-butter for most poets – romantic poetry. He could write the most romantic lines – the romantic songs of ‘Gumraah’ and ‘Hamraaz’, for example, just take your breath away. And not just these films – think of songs like “Parbaton Ke Pedon Par” from ‘Shagoon’, and on the same ‘parbat’ theme, “Ye Parbaton Ke Daayare” from ‘Vaasna’.

I can go on and on, discussing his songs, but I think I need to now come to the song for today. It is also a romantic song, but this time from very late in his career. It is no secret that in the 1970s, Sahir was disillusioned with the quality of lyrics on offer in Hindi cinema. Urdu, which offered so much richness to lyrics, was being phased out and replaced with more ‘chaalu‘ lyrics. In general, films (and music too, I might add) had become more loud and less, for want of a better word, classy.

He himself withdrew for a bit – and while he continued to work for the BR Chopra/Yash Chopra banners, he wasn’t as prolific as in the 60s. His disillusionment is probably best expressed in one of his most memorable songs of the decade – “Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shaayar Hoon“.

It is in this context one needs to see the song for today. It is from the 1980 film ‘Chehre Pe Chehra’, a film that makes its debut on the blog today. I remember this film being released – and being a flop. I haven’t seen the film – my understanding is, it’s based on the famous ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ story. Sanjeev Kumar plays the dual role. The song is a romantic song – and pleasant enough, even if it doesn’t quite scale to the level of his heady songs of the 1960s. Even so, in comparison to the fare around at the time, I’d say its lyrics are better than most other songs of the time. Of course this is just my personal opinion.

Let’s now listen to the song, sung by Sulakshana Pandit and Rafi Saab. Music is by N Datta, one of his most famous pairings. I leave it to you to judge for yourself what you make of this song. I quite like it.

Lyrics were provided to me by the ever-helpful and reliable Avinash ji. A big thanks to him. He makes it so much easier for me to just focus on the write-up itself.

aaj socha hai. . .
aaj socha hai
khayaalon mein bulaa kar tum ko
pyaar ke naam pe thodi si shikaayat kar len
aaj socha hai

aaj socha hai
khayaalon mein bulaa kar tum ko
pyaar ke naam pe thodi si shikaayat kar len
aaj socha hai

aise bichhade ho ke jaise kabhi milna hi nahin
aise bhoole ho ki jaise  kabhi jaana hi na thha
ajnabhi ban ke agar yoon hi sitam dhaana thha
paas aana hi na thha  paas bulaana hi na thha
aao toote huye
aao toote huye
khwaabon ki jiyaarat kar len
aaj socha hai ae

ranjishen bhi wahin palti hain
jahaan pyaar paley
pyaar hi jis se nahin
us se gilaa kya hoga
meri ummeed hai tu
teri tammanna main hoon
aur chaahat ki duaaon ka sila kya hoga
ranjishen bhool ke
ranjishen bhool ke
khwaabon ko haqeeqat kar len
aaj socha hai

kya kahoon main tumhen
kya samjha hai kya maana hai
meri chaahat ne tumhen
apna khudaa maana hai
apna hissa hi tumhe maine sadaa maana hai
jaan ko kis ne bhalaa tan se judaa maana hai
jaan aur tan se
jaan aur tan se naya ahd-e-mohabbat kar len
aaj socha hai
aaj socha hai
khayaalon mein bulaakar tumko
pyaar ke naam pe thodisi shikaa …

hmm hmm hmm hmmmm

Blog Day : 3530 Post No. : 14178

First of all, let me wish all of you a Happy Ugadi and Happy Gudi Padwa today (18 march 2018). I hope those celebrating the occasion are enjoying themselves.

Today also happens to be the birthday of Shashi Kapoor (18 march 1938-4 december 2017), one of our best-known and most loved actors.

The thought is inescapable – and burdened with more than a tinge of sorrow. The thought that, had I written this post on just his previous birthday, I would have been talking of Shashi Kapoor in the present tense. I’d have been saying “is”, instead of “was”.

But that’s life – and death. And we have to accept it.

Ah, Shashi Kapoor!

Where do I start?

Let me start as usual with “my generation”, the 70s.

For me, and I am sure for many Hindi film lovers born in the early 60s, Shashi Kapoor would have been an integral part of their childhood film-watching experience. He was a very familiar face throughout the 70s – whether in solo roles or in multi-starrer films.

Those were the times when Rajesh Khanna (for the first half of the decade) and Amitabh Bachchan (for the second half) ruled. The 70s also saw a whole lot of new actors emerge. There were also some from the earlier decade who continued to enjoy success – Dharmendra, Manoj Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, Jeetendra to name a few.

And there was Shashi Kapoor.

One thing most people will agree about Shashi Kapoor – he was very handsome. He had this boyishly cute face, bright eyes, and a smile that got accentuated by crooked teeth and a deep dimple. No wonder you often heard of the term “chocolatey good looks” when people talked of Shashi. 🙂

I think girls found Shashi particularly handsome – he was easily my sisters’ favourite. I was very young then in the late 60s, but I still remember that when the one weekly film in our club happened to be a Shashi film, they’d be thrilled. 🙂 Thus I have fond memories of watching at a very young age, in that club, Shashi films like Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Aamne Saamne, Suhana Safar, Ek Shriman Ek Shrimati, Pyar Ka Mausam, Raja Saab, Rootha Na Karo, Jahaan Pyaar Mile and many more. Whether the film was good or not, was secondary. Shashi was a good enough reason to enjoy it. I remember for days after seeing Pyar Ka Mausam, they’d be singing “ni sultana re”. 🙂 And they loved Aamne Saamne’s “nain milaakar chain churaana kiska hai ye kaam”.

Even when we went on holiday to Bombay for the first time in the early 70s, and we decided to watch a movie, the unanimous choice was Sharmeelee, playing at that time. I think my sisters were even hoping to catch sight of Shashi Kapoor somewhere on the streets of Bombay. 🙂 Not even one in a million chance – but one lives on hope. I remember, for days after watching Sharmeelee, the song “khilte hain gul yahaan” was on their lips. 🙂

Back in our village, when we had to travel 25 km to see a film in a cinema hall, they managed to persuade my dad to take them for Jaanwar Aur Insaan (1972). My dad wasn’t into films at all – it’s possible they told him it was a film about animals (jaanwar). Whereas it’s more likely they were interested in the insaan (Shashi). 🙂

Ah, these childhood memories. 🙂

I was fond of Shashi too – from those late 60s films, while my sisters would sing Shashi’s “tum bin jaoon kahaan” in Antakshari, I’d sing “aaye baithe khaaye piye khiske”. A little more matter-of-fact. 🙂

Today, as I am writing this post, with all these memories coming to the fore, it strikes me that even in an era with Rajesh Khanna as superstar (and Amitabh Bachchan later), Shashi had his own following. Like my sisters. 🙂

Sharmeelee (1971) with superhit songs, Jaanwar Aur Insaan (1972), Aa Gale Lag Ja (1973) with superhit songs, Chor Machaye Shor (1974) with the famous “le jaayenge, le jaayenge, dilwaale dulhaniya le jaayenge”, Chori Mera Kaam and Salaakhen (1975), Fakira (1976) with hit songs.

All solo films for Shashi, all successful. Am not counting the multi-starrers, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), Deewaar (1975) and Kabhie Kabhie (1976).

As the decade progressed, and multi-starrers became more common, Shashi Kapoor was very much part of them, often to be seen opposite reigning superstar Amitabh Bachchan in films like Trishul (1977) and Suhaag (1979).

Yet, he could carry his own in a solo – as was to be seen in Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978), a film made by his brother, Raj Kapoor.

So Shashi Kapoor was largely a “safe” actor in the 70s – both for viewers and producers. Of course not every film worked (there are many aspect to a film’s success), but, by and large, audiences liked watching him on screen.

Towards the end of the decade, Shashi got into film production too. He produced some well-known films – Junoon (1979), Kalyug (1981), 36 Chowringhee Lane (1981), Vijeta (1982), Utsav (1984).

But in 1984, disaster struck – his dear wife Jennifer passed away, due to cancer. I think after that Shashi was not the same again.

I’ve talked a lot about his films of the 70s, mainly because that’s the decade I have most memories of. Of course his career started much earlier. As a child artiste (a young Raj Kapoor in Aag and Awara), with his first film as an adult being BR Chopra’s controversial Dharamputra (1961). In that film, he had a negative role.

Although he came from the Kapoor khandaan, it was made clear to Shashi that he had to come up on merit. He had his share of struggles early on – and though he managed the odd hit (like in the multi-starrer Waqt), he really had his first mega solo hit only with Jab Jab Phool Khile (1965).

His co-star in that film was, as usual, Nanda. I say “as usual”, because Nanda was his co-star in many films during the 60s. She was a much bigger star than he was – but was happy to be paired opposite him. Shashi later said he was hugely grateful to Nanda for this. Nanda herself said that Shashi was her favourite co-star.

One thing that struck me in obituaries about Shashi Kapoor last December was that almost everyone spoke a lot about Prithvi Theatre. And rightly so.

While there’s no doubt that Shashi Kapoor gained a lot of popularity from cinema, I think in his heart his love was Prithvi Theatre. After all, he had met his wife Jennifer also through theatre in the 1950s. So one of the most satisfying moments for him and for Jennifer must have been to set up Prithvi Theatre in 1978 and fulfil his father Prithviraj Kapoor’s dream of having a permanent location for his Prithvi Theatres (it had been a travelling troupe during Prithviraj’s time).

Many of the obits talked about how dedicated Shashi Kapoor (and Jennifer, when she was alive) was to Prithvi Theatre. Even when he was in very poor health in his final years, he would want to visit and even watch performances.

So no mention of Shashi Kapoor is complete without a mention of Prithvi Theatre.

I’ve not talked about his acting in English-language films or his partnership with Merchant-Ivory. I’ve myself just watched only one of these films – Bombay Talkie (1970), directed by James Ivory. It also starred Jennifer.

I’ve also not mentioned that Shashi Kapoor was considered to be a true gentleman actor. Many of his co-stars, from Sharmila Tagore to Hema Malini to Zeenat Aman, have said this. He was also supposed to have had a good sense of humour, always keeping the set lively.

All in all, Shashi Kapoor was a much-loved person during his lifetime. And for good reason. And you cannot really ask for more than that.

Now for the song for today.

It is from the film “Suhaana Safar” (1970). A film that I remember seeing as a very young boy, but sadly have only very faint memories of. I seem to vaguely remember a bus in which Shashi and Sharmila travel. That’s all I can remember now. 🙂 A good excuse to watch it again. 🙂

The song is the title song. Aha aha aa ye suhaana safar hai, sung by Rafisaab. The lyrics of this song are by Anand Bakshi, music by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The picturisation is of Shashi Kapoor in a jeep, generally giving out positive vibes, talking about travel, hawa, manzil etc. He finds himself behind a bus, and this infectious positive mood catches on with the travelers in the bus too. They join him in the song. Towards the end of the song, Sharmila Tagore (one of the travelers) looks out of the bus, Shashi waves to her – and it looks like he loses control of his jeep. (Am pretty sure it’s nothing serious :-)).

While watching the video and listening to the lyrics, I could not help thinking that this could be a metaphor for the suhaana safar of Shashi Kapoor’s life itself. And the suhaana safar that we have had following his films for decades. Indeed, it has been a wonderful journey – and we are thankful to him for letting us be part of it.

Interestingly, while I was having these thoughts, I got a message from Avinashji. As usual, when I thought of writing a post for Shashi Kapoor today, he had promptly messaged me, and offered to help me with providing the lyrics. Now, while sending me the lyrics, he echoed the exact same thoughts I had! About the suhana safar of Shashi Kapoor and what we have had with Shashi Kapoor. Serendipity. 🙂

I’ll now leave you with this positive song – and with remembering our suhaana safar with Shashi Kapoor.

There are two versions of this song – one by Rafisaab, the other by Suman Kalyanpur.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
—————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 65# Remembering Navin Nischol
———————————————–————————————-

Today (19th March 2018) is the remembrance day of Navin Nischol (11 April 1946 – 19 March 2011).

He will always be remembered for his ‘soft’ and ‘gentle’ acting with his special touch and he will always be remembered whenever Hindi Movies of ‘seventies’ are discussed.

I vague recall having watching his movies of 1970s like ‘Dharma-1973’, ‘Dhund-1973’, ‘Victoria No.203-1972’, ‘Saawan Bhadon-1970’, in my childhood with my elders. Much Later, when I grew up, I watched his movies of 1980s like ‘The Burning Train-1980’, ‘Desh Premee-1982’ ‘Babu-1985’,’Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman-1992’,as well as some of his earlier movies like ‘Hanste Zakhm-1973’ & ‘Buddha Mil Gaya-1971’. The latest Navin Nischol movie that I watched was ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla-2006’ which I liked very much and I have watched it many times since.

I think I had watched ‘Muqaddar Ka Baadshah-1990’and ‘Bahaar Aane Tak -1990’ as well but do not remember it correctly now. There are many such other movies too which I watched during this period of 1989 to 1996, but do not remember them.

I cannot forget his role in the famous ‘TV serial’ ‘Dekh Bhaai Dekh-1993’ which also I liked very much.

I may not have watched too many of his movies but there are some songs from his movies that have remained with me right since my younger days.

I rememeber the songs of “Woh Main Nahin-1974”, which was one of the earlier movies of Navin Nischol and I have not forgotten these songs even though I do not recall having watched this movie..

“Woh Main Nahin-1974” was directed by Mohan Sehgal (or Mohan Segal) for Uma Cine Films Pvt. Ltd., Bombay. Mohan Sehgal was also the producer of this movie.

The movie had Navin Nischol, Rekha, Rakesh Pandey, Padmini Kapila, Meena Roy, Iftikhar, Krishna Dhawan, Nadira, Dhumal, Sujata, Jagirdar, Manhar Desai, Kamaldeep, Shauqat Azmi, Sadhna Khote, Birbal, V. Gopal, Sophia, Chamapuri, Chinnu, Chanda, Vishal Dutt, Ramlal, Bhola, Assi, Master Asif and others.

Nazneen, and Narendranath make ‘friendly appearance’, while Asha Sachdev make a ‘special appearance’ in this movie. Praveen Nischol was the Chief Asstt Director of this movie. (I think he is the real brother of Navin Nischol). Pratap Dave was the editor for this movie. Ali Raza was the writer of this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 08.10.1974.

This movie had five songs in it composed by Sonik Omi. Lyrics of all the songs were written by Varma Malik. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Mohd Rafi gave their voices to the songs in this movie. Navin Nishcol’s voice has also been credited in two songs as per HFGK.

This movie was based on prominent Marathi writer, poet and playwriter Acharya Atre’s play ‘To Mi Navhech’ which has been regarded as a ‘classic play’ and has been successfully performed for record number of times since its inception in 1962 (it has a separate wiki page here).

It is quite possible that I may have watched this movie ‘Who Main Nahin-1974’ in my childhood, but I do not remember it.
And the reason that I remember this movie may be because of its discussion among elderly family members or discussion about the Classic Marathi Play ‘To Mi Navhech’ written by P.K. Atre or better known as Acharya Atre.

Today we listen and enjoy a song from this movie which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar. Navin Nischol and Asha Sachdev are performing on this song on screen where we can see many other artists in the picturization of this song.

Let us now enjoy this rocking song from the movie ‘Woh Main Nahin-1974’ which makes its debut on the blog today.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# The Special Voices of the decade – 3 # Jaspal Singh #
———————————————–———————————–

Welcome all to the third article in this series.

So far, we have the following two articles posted earlier on this blog under this series, where we are discussing the ‘special voices of the seventies’ and the nostalgia and memories associated with the songs of these ‘special voices’ from Hindi Movies.

‘Maa ne kahaa thhaa o betaa’
‘Haseen haseen waadiyon o’

When I had decided to start this series, my plan was to post one article per month under this series. However, later I thought it was better to combine it with the anniversaries of the Singers if it too falls in the same month of my writing the article.

The song and the ‘voice’ of today was supposed to be covered to mark the end of this series, however there was a good development in the first week of this month (March’2018) which delayed this post and finally it is here today.

The voice that I am presenting today is a ‘’very very special’ and ‘nostalgic’ voice for me.
I can feel the fragrance of the soil of this great land – our country, the purity of green lush fields, a big river flowing with its natural beauty, a small beautiful remote village in the rural part of our country – India, the diversity of our culture and the sweetness of the dialects spoken in our country. In all of its way this voice takes me back to ‘my roots and my soil’ if I think I am able to correctly mention the feelings otherwise the feelings just cannot be expressed in words.

Just listen to this song ‘dharti meri maata pitaa aasmaan’ .

And for that matter take this another song ‘geet gaata chal o saathi gungunaata chal’ from this same movie ‘Geet Gaata Chal -1975’

And then this beautiful ‘bhajan’ ‘O o o mangal bhawan amangal haari ee ee’, again from the same movie – ‘Geet Gaata Chal-1975’, its so soothing and so divine that I can keep it listening again and again just going on.

I remember these songs were played on loudspeakers continuously in a marriage function in our neighbourhood in the colony we were staying then.

I was seven and half years then when the movie was released in 1975.

Since then this voice and these songs also were growing on me as I keep growing over the years.
And yes, I had not watched this movie till many years since it was released. I get to watch it, may be on a TV channel, in the later years of nineties I think. But its songs were there with me and they keep growing on me and with me in my journey of life.

I had watched ‘Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se-1978’, that too on TV around mid or later eighties if I remember correctly. But the ‘dohawali’ from this movie is as fresh ever and soothing whenever I listened to it even now.

I had also not watched ‘Saawan Ko Aane Do-1979’ when it was released or even after that for many years, but I had not and will never escape its magical title song because of the voice singing it and the range of this voice and its sweetness and its melody.

(after coming into contact with this blog I got an opportunity to share the following song from this movie sung by Jaspal Singh; ‘gagan ye samjhe chaand sukhi hai’ )

Those were the days when we were watching any movie coming our way and we were getting a chance to watch. But so far as I remember I didn’t get to watched all the above-mentioned movies then where this singer had his songs which were very popular during those years. But I did watch them when I was a grown adult and I think that was the right time for me to watch them.

One such movie is the 1982 movie ‘Nadiyaa Ke Paar’ of which the songs were so popular then. Those couple of years were the ‘most study focussed’ years for us the students (though I was still very casual in my approach and could not understand its seriousness then, which I can realize now  )
Well, coming back to the songs from this movie, all the songs from this movie were very popular then and all of them are my favorites too.

‘Saanchi kahen tore aawan se hamre’
‘Kaun disha mein leke chalaa re batohiyaa’

These songs from this movie and one of the voice i.e. the male voice of these songs is our ‘special voice’ of the ‘decade of seventies’ for this article today …

The voice I am talking about is none other than Jaspal Singh.

***

Jaspal Singh was born on 23rd March 1943 in Amritsar, Punjab. We wish him a belated “Happy Birthday” on this blog today and a healthy and peaceful life ahead!!!

However, yours ‘junior’ sincerely had already wished him personally over phone a ‘very very happy birthday’ and good wishes to him.

How I came to know about his birthdate also happens just by chance.

It so happened that, during my stay at Nagpur I came across this song (of today) which when I listened to it I liked it so much and immediately fall in love with it. I did share it then to Atul ji but for a different occasion.
(However, now I feel that this is the perfect song for me to share with this article here when I am presenting this voice under this series).

At that time, I do also search for a detailed biographic information about him and after getting his contact number from sources on internet I do make him a call and express my gratitude to him for giving us the treasure of many ‘unforgettable songs’ and for his voice being part of our (people like me who were in pre-teens and teens then) growing years. I had also expressed my wish to meet him sometime if I get a chance of it, which he appreciated whole heartedly and also assured that he can share all information about him whatever is possible and if one wants to go through it.

This happened immediately after the November’16 Mumbai Gang out, so I enquired with our respected Shishir ji, if he had interviewed this personality for this blog, which he told me that it is in his future plans.

Well, from the information available on internet then (even now) it came to my notice that none of the sources (which I came across) had mentioned the birthdate of this personality so I was curious to know about it.

Recently when Atul ji ‘Yippeeee’d’ this movie ‘Geet Gaaata Chal -1975’ on the blog and posted couple of the songs sung by Jaspal Singh ji, I thought I should also write up and complete my post under this series.

After a gap of almost one year and half I thought I should call Jaspal Singh ji and try to get this information directly from him. He was very happy that somebody from a long distance (now from Kenya) had called him and was interested to know about him. He readily shared the information to me which also had an interesting ‘thing’ associated with it.

As mentioned above he was born on 23rd March 1943 at Amritsar Punjab. However, on all official records his date of birth had been recorded as 28th March 1943.

(for the information of our readers I would like to share once again that yours ‘junior’ sincerely have already wished him personally on phone on his birthday on 23rd March itself – ‘thanks, and so nice of you’ was what he replied to me)

Jaspal Singh came from Amritsar where his father was having the business of Hotel and their Hotel was once situated just opposite to the famous ‘Golden Temple in Amritsar’ (which was later demolished and was compensated by the government, as mentioned by him in his interview on RSTV-Guftagoo).

Among the five siblings they are four brothers and one sister. (I hope I am correct as per what I can learn from his interview on RSTV-Guftagoo).

Jaspal Singh completed his graduation from Amritsar and later on persuaded LLB from Ghaziabad. However, he was neither interested in business nor doing the ‘advocacy’. His only interest was to sing and become a ‘play back singer’ which his mother and sister supported well.

Jaspal Singh, since his childhood was fond of singing and he was singing in his school and college functions and was popular among his circles in Amritsar and was invited for singing in functions.
He too (like other upcoming singers) was a great fan of Rafi Saab whom he admires a lot and later on he got a chance to sing with Rafi Saab in films which was a great day for him.

His journey to movies and becoming a play back singer was full of hard work and struggle and he succeeded only because he had this talent, passion and instinct to become a play back singer for movies.

It so happened that his Sister got married and was settled in Mumbai (Bombay) in those years. This came like a blessing for young Jaspal Singh who thereafter keep visiting Bombay, initially during the ‘summer vacation’ and thereafter very often to fulfil his ‘dream’ of becoming a ‘playback singer’ for movies.

His Sister knowing about his passion and intentions persuaded her husband to try that Jaspal Singh gets an opportunity to sing in movies.
There continued efforts resulted in Usha Khanna ji giving him his first break for playback singing in the movie ‘Bandish-1968’ where his first recorded song was a solo song ‘dekho logo ye kaisa zamaana sambhalo sambhalo tang libaada’ which went un-noticed.
Usha Khanna ji give him another chance in 1969 to sung in the movie ‘Anjaan Hai Koi’, this time a duet with Mahendra Kapoor which due to its tune and words was somewhat noticed and reach a larger audience.

However, he was still far away from the ‘big’ and ‘hit’ …

In the meantime, given to the pressure by his father to join the family business in Amritsar he keeps visiting Amritsar, but since he was not interested in Business he returns back to Mumbai.
Later on, his father also gives up to his wish and allow him to stay in Mumbai and even bought a ‘flat’ for him in Mumbai which he is still staying in.

Jaspal Singh also started taking lessons from his guruji Mahendrajeet Singh ji who always encouraged him a lot and always supported him and insisted that he should not leave Mumbai and ‘singing’.
As his struggle for singing opportunities and a major break continued Jaspal Singh also too on practicing as lawyer ship with a senior lawyer in Mumbai and started attending the court proceedings.

***
‘Geet Gaata Chal’ …

Luckily, he got a chance to meet Ravindra Jain who also staying in the same locality and who was aware of his singing.

A ‘big break’ was already waiting for Jaspal Singh when Rajshri Productions were looking for a ‘new singer’ for their upcoming new movie starring Sachin.
Ravindra Jain was the music director of this movie and he thought to give Jaspal Singh a chance for singing.
And, after going through the ‘tests’ Jaspal Sing was given a chance to sing ‘dharti meri maata pitaa aasmaan’, which also was his first recorded song for the movie.

The main title song of the movie came to him only after lot of consultations between the producer of the movie Rajkamal Barjatya and the music director Ravindra Jain who was initially reluctant to give him this song, which he thought was the main song of the movie and he thought a new singer would not be able to do justice with it and had it been gone a wrong way would have spoiled the movie and the music of this movie.
Finally, he was called to sing this ‘title song’ of the movie and after recording of that he was also offered the remaining songs of the movie to sing. (one song of the movie viz. Shyam abhimaani o Shyam abhimaani was already recorded earlier in Rafi Saab’s voice)

However, the title song ‘geet gaata chal o saathi gungunaata chal ’sung by Jaspal Singh went on to create a ‘magic’ for him and for the movie and for the ‘history of ‘Hindi film music’ and this song even today after so many years is as fresh as it was when the movie was released.

This was the first major break he got and which opened for him many avenues further, though he mainly sung for Ravindra Jain (I think so, till we arrive at the total statistics of songs sung by him.)

Thereafter he got to sing in many movies mainly for actor Sachin and many of his songs went on to become very popular and they are as fresh as they were then in the minds of the movie goers and HFM lovers.

***
Here it will be interesting to know if he got to sing in movies after ‘Bandish-1968’ and ‘Anjaan Hai Koi-1969’, because his next song was in 1975 for ‘Geet Gaata Chal’.

Well, after ‘Geet Gaata Chal-1975’ he left his ‘practice in lawyership’ and went on to singing in around one hundred fifty movies (to be authenticated).
However tragically or unfortunately for the history of ‘HFM’ the so-called ‘big banners’ didn’t offer him to sing in their productions.
Nevertheless, the songs that he got to sung so far cannot be forgotten and some of them will remain immortal in the memories of HFM lovers.

The song ‘jab jab tu mere saamne aaye’ from ‘Shyam Tere Kitne Naam-1977’ sung for Sachin is his personal favourite.

On this blog I got the opportunity to share few of his songs (few I mentioned above) and viz. ‘yaar dagaa de gaya dulhan ko le gaya’

His active years in singing last till 2009-2010 (as mentioned by him in his interview on RSTV).
By then already HFM had gone many changes and seen many new singers making entry into movies and singing, so naturally Jaspal Singh also got forgotten by Music Directors.

However, given the quantity of songs he sung, and his not so frequent appearing in movie songs credit some keep wondering that ‘where did he vanish?’😊.

On our blog we have so far only fifteen of ‘Jaspal Singh Songs’ posted, so all those who wondered where he was vanished can try to search for his songs also can try to get them posted here 😊 sharing them with their memories associated with his beautiful songs.

From his interview on RSTV (which is also the main source for this article) and as mentioned by Jaspal Singh himself he is living a happy and contented life with his family (wife, a daughter and a son) and continuing with his riyaaz and readings.
He had been doing stage shows as per demand and whenever he got opportunities for that. (the interview was done in 2014 i.e. only four years back).

That brings us to the today’s song being presented here on the blog and the movie it is from …

“Paayal Ki Jhankaar-1980” was directed by Satyen Bose for Ruchi Films, Bombay.

It had Komal Mahuwakar, Alankar, Surinder Kaur (new discovery), Arun Kumar, Shail Chaturvedi, C.S. Dubey, Virendra Gaud, Shrikant Moghe, Anand Joshi, Brijendra Mohan, Pardesi, Master Abhitabh, Deepak, Sudha Shivpuri, Ranjana Sachdev, Bandini, Namrata, Asha Sharma, Rajraani and Nisha.
Master Mayur and Master Sandeep make a guest appearance in this movie.

Music for this movie was composed by Rajkamal and its songs were written by Maya Govind.

This movie had total eleven songs in it and it was passed by Censor Board on 23.08.1980.
Aarti Mukherjee, Alka Yagnik, Anand Kumar C., Jaspal Singh, Purushottam Das Jalota, Sulakshana Pandit and Yesudas gave their voices to the songs of this movie.

Interestingly the song being presented today is the only song sung by Jaspal Singh in this movie and the only male solo too. The other male voices are appearing in duets song only.

Though I had not watched this movie its name was in my vague memories so I had been waiting for sharing of a song of this movie to introduce it on the blog. And it also serves the purpose of bringing ‘movies having same titles’ on the blog.

There was a movie with the same title “Paayal Ki Jhankaar” in 1968 which has already made an entry on the blog.

Today ‘Paayal Ki Jhankaar-1980’ makes a debut on the blog …

Let us now enjoy the today’s song in the unique and amazing voice of Jaspal Singh …
Lyrics are by Maya Govind and music is composed by Raj Kamal ji.

Song-Jin khoja tin paaiyaan gehre paani paithh (Paayal Ki Jhankaar)(1980) Singer-Jaspal Singh, Lyrics-Maya Govind, MD-Rajkamal

Lyrics

Jin khoja tin paayiyaan aa aa
Gehre paani paithh
Jo baawraa dooban daraa aa
Rahaa kinaare baithh
O Shyaama aa
Jin khoja tin paayiyaan aa
Jin khoja tin paayiyaan
Jin khoja tin paayiyaan aa aa
Gehre paani paithh
Jo baawraa dooban daraa aa
Rahaa kinaare baithh
O Shyaama
Jin khoja tin paayiyaan aa
Jin khoja tin paayiyaan

Man ki saanchi lagan hamesha
Manzil tak pahunchaati
Behte behte jaise nadiyaa
Saagar se mil jaati
O Shyaama
Jin khoja tin paayiyaan aa

Tulsi Meera aa Soor ke jaisa
Milaa na khojanhaaraa
Karke tapasya laaye Bhageerath
Ganga ki jal dhaaraa
O Shyaama
Jin khoja tin paayiyaan aa
Jin khoja tin paayiyaan

Baiju ne Guru khoja
Swaami Hari Das ko paaya
Baalak Dhruv ne sach khoja
Ho Shyaama ho o o o o
O o o o
o o o
Baalak Dhruv ne sach khoja
Dhruv taara ban muskaaya
O Shyaama aa
Jin khoja tin paayiyaan aa aa
Jin khoja tin paayiyaan

In the continuum of the vast annals of history, there are tales and legends in every civilization and every system of knowledge and learning, that identify the supreme importance associated with the very support system that we rest upon. In practically every system, this support system, this concept, is endowed with divine qualities – qualities that are almost always endowed with the mother, as the provider of all that is required in life, and more.

In the Greek wisdom, this concept is name as Gaia. In the Roman legends, she is called by the name Terra. In the Norse mythology, she is named as Erda. In the east, in China, she is known as Houtu or Houtushen – the Goddess Queen of Earth. In the Buddhist scriptures that span the South East Asian region, she goes by the name Phra Mae Thorani. She is worshipped as Atira or Awitelin Tsta amongst the native tribes of the Americas, who gives birth to all life. On the African continent, she is known as Odudua, the beautiful black goddess of Earth with a skin of deepest dark ebony.

In our own land and in our culture, she is known by many names, the most important ones being Bhoo Devi – that which makes possible and supports all existence, and Vasudha – the provider of all wealth and riches.

Wherever, in whichever part of the world one may seek, there is a revered acknowledgement of the divinity of the earth as the mother, and the provider of all things. If one may sit down to list all the things that we need, we desire, and we dream – other than the light energy that comes from the Sun, Moon and the stars, the life breath that is the air that swirls around us, and the waters of rain that descend from the skies – all else, and I mean everything else comes forth from the very earth that we stand upon. Our existence and sustenance is – because the earth is.

The world is celebrating today as the Earth Day. The western dogmas consider a once in a year celebration to be an adequate measure of honor and gratitude. In our belief system, it is a celebration and honor that happens on a daily basis. And we celebrate and seek blessing, not just for our family or our country, but for the entire planet as a whole.

The reminder for this celebration and the suggestion of this song came in yesterday from Avinash ji. The film name itself is so appropriate – ‘Dharti Ke Laal’ from 1946. The music is by Pt Ravi Shankar, who was later destined to be the world famous sitar player from India. No other information relating to singer(s) or songwriter is readily available.

The song is in praise and honor of Mother Earth. It is depicted as a folk song in the tradition of Bengal, being performed at the village fair. It is such a wonderful expression of veneration towards the entity that makes all life possible.

A salute to Mother Earth – today, and every day of the year.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 66# Singer – Mukesh
———————————————–——————–

Just few days back I came across this song that I am presenting today. After listening to it I was feeling like maybe I had heard it on ‘radio’ many many years back. When I listened to it once I just kept listening to it again and again and with every new day this song is growing on me, on and on. The song is from the 1978 movie ‘Pal Do Pal Ka Saath’ and it is sung by Mukesh ji.

‘Pal Do Pal Ka Saath’ was directed by BR Ishara for Kaveri Films, Bombay. The cast of actors includes Shekhar Kapoor, Rama Vij, Shamli (New Discovery), Asit Sen, Paintal, Johny Whisky, Aarti, Tiger, Mishri Lal, Mohammad Ali, Amal Sen, Narayan Gwalani, Hameed, Sitaram, Jasbir, Prakash Joshi, Vijay Nangia, Bhaiyalal Sharma, Kashi Prasad Chaurasia and others.

This movie has four songs penned by Naqsh Lyallpuri, Yogesh, Balkavi Bairagi and Dev Kohli. Music for this movie is composed by Shyam Saagar. One song from this movie had been posted on the blog earlier in 2014 i.e. four years back and it was introduced by Sudhir ji – ‘Chupke Se Peechhe Se Aa Ke’ sung by Rafi Saab and lyrics of this song are by Dev Kohli.

As mentioned by Sudhir ji in his post this movie seems to be an ‘obscure movie’ though it contains ‘gems of songs’ (‘veritable gems’ as Sudhir ji has mentioned in his post) as we can say for the earlier song and the today’s song after listening to them. I don’t remember to have heard about this movie earlier and not gone through its information before. It was only after listening to the today’s song that I searched for its details in HFGK Vol V and also read the earlier post on the blog. This movie was passed by censor board on 07.04.1978.

Almost forty years have passed since the movie and its music had been created, however listening to its songs revives the memories of the music of those years and Mukesh ji’s singing of the many other songs for Yogesh ji. Yes, today’s song is penned by Yogesh.

Since the movie was an obscure movie I think its songs were also forgotten easily. I am not able to locate online, the other two songs of this film. As per Geet Kosh, these are solo songs in the voices of Asha Bhosle and Manna Dey. We have to search for them and need to bring them here for our listening pleasure. Till then let us listen to this wonderful composition of Shyam Saagar and savour the magic Yogesh ji’s words and Mukesh ji’s singing…

Only the audio of this song is available as of now. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs please.

Song – Anuraagi Mann Sab Kuchh Seh Le (Pal Do Pal Ka Saath) (1978) Singer – Mukesh, Lyrics – Yogesh, MD – Shyam Saagar

Lyrics

anuraagi mann sab kuchh sah le
anuraagi mann sab kuchh sah le
har uljhan mein
hans ke tu rah le
anuraagi mann sab kuchh sah le

ik sang tera
parichay gehra
janam janam ka ye naata re
ik sudh kho kar
besudh ho kar
geet tumhaare hi gaata re
do chehron ka tu ik darpan
anuraagi mann sab kuchh sah le

mita’ti nahin hai prem ki rekha
toofaanon ke bhi aane se
tripti adhoori
rah jaati hai
saagar ko bhi
paa jaane se
ho na ho poora tera samarpan
anuraagi mann . . .
har uljhan mein
hans ke tu rah le
anuraagi mann sab kuchh sah le
