Blog Day : 3968 Post No. : 15052

———————————————–——————————————
Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 33
——————————————————————————————

30th May – ten years ago. The steady pace of six songs per day is quite natural, and consistent. The six movies that were represented that day are

  • Chaandni Chowk             1954
  • Aas Ka Panchhi               1961
  • Aadhi Raat Ke Baad         1965
  • Zanjeer                          1973
  • Hamshakal                      1974
  • Bhola Bhaalaa                 1978

The first four films on this list above are already fully represented on our blog. The reprisal song for today is from the 1978 film ‘Bhola Bhaala’. This film is directed by Satpal, under the banner of Venkteshewara Pictures, Bombay. The cast of actors is listed as Rajesh Khanna, Rekha, Maushumi Chatterjee, Joginder, Satyen Kappu, Sulochana, Pinchoo Kapoor, V Gopal, Sudhir Thakkar, Jankidas, Rajkumar, Devraj, Master Chiku, Shakti, Ashu, Deven Verma, Jagdeep, Sudhir, Ratnamala, Raj Mehra, and Aruna Irani.

The six songs in this film are all penned by Anand Bakshi. Music direction is by RD Burman. This is the third song of this film to appear on our blog.

On screen, this song is lip synced by Rajesh Khanna, disguised as a sanyaasi. Rekha also appears in this song, as the main dancer attraction. She is also wearing saffron clothes, but she is not lip syncing. Apparently, a certain rich man is making an offering of a costly chhatr (‘छत्र’), as he has been blessed with a son after a very long wait.

This song seems to be a song of deception, to steal that costly offering. I have not seen this film, and so I request other knowledgeable readers to please add more information about this film and this song situation.

[Dialogue: maharaj chhatra aa rahaa hain
pooja ki saamagri taiyyaar rakhiye!]

[shankar ji ki krupa se
baarah saal ke baad sethji ke ghar
ladka paida hua hai!]

[tabhi to chhatra chadhaa rahe hain
do laakh ka!]
[aayiye aayiye aayiye

ab darshan honay waala hain
kuchh arpan honay waala hain
hoshiyaa..aar
ek ki baat kisi duje ke
kaanon tak nahin jaa..aaye
paayal thhak nahin jaaye

Blog Day : 3974 Post No. : 15060

Welcome all to this post of today!!!

Today 5th June is the ‘World Environment Day’ which is celebrated all over the world on 5th June every year. Since 2017, we are trying to connect us with this celebration by posting a song on the blog which comes closer to the theme of the ‘World Environment Day’ of that year. Though, it is more or less difficult that we find any direct song relevant to the theme or subject, our endeavour here is to connect with those songs wherein we have ‘nature-connection’ in them or songs about nature symbols.

Nature, natural environment and nature symbols are very much an integral part of many of Hindi movie songs and where we attach ourselves with different types of feelings and emotions. Some of the greatest songs from Hindi movies comes from these types of songs too.

Also, I would like to mention here that off late we have some Hindi movies coming with the subjects related to pollution, climate change etc. and the general concern towards environment is being highlighted to make people more aware about the environmental related issues.

On the growing pollution and climate change I have written few lines ‘‘आबोहवा’ बदल गयी हैं! ( The ‘Climate’ is ‘changing’ ) six years back. I am reproducing below few lines from it;

फिजां कि बाहों में
अनगिनत जहरीलें ‘वायु’
आज घुल रहे
के हवा भी ‘रंग बदलने’ लगी हैं

This year’s environment day theme is Air Pollution#!!!

It will also be interesting to see how the yearly ‘themes’ of the ‘World Environment Day’ have been since its inception in 1974, and how due to the increasing pollution and effects of climate change we have reached a stage of ‘do or die’ and so the themes are also reflecting it like last year it was ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ and this year it is ‘Air Pollution’ and the call is to ‘Beat Air Pollution’.

‘Air’ (Vayu, Pawan, Hawaa) as we know is the source of life, we cannot breathe and be alive if there is no ‘air’. ‘Air’ like the other natural resources is ‘God’s gift’ to human kind. If we go the dictionary meaning of air it reads ‘the invisible gaseous substance surrounding the earth, a mixture mainly of oxygen and nitrogen’.  So, may be what we are connecting with in our Hindi movie songs is its various forms i.e. wind, breeze etc.

And though ‘air, wind, breeze’ might be invisible we have a very strong bond with it and in our HFM songs our poets/lyricists have taken liberties to establish a strong relationship with it.

So, we have Gulzar Saab in his own philosophical style saying ‘Hawaaon Pe Likh Do Hawaaon Ke Naam, Hum Anjaan Pardesiyon Ka Salaam’.

When we are in upbeat mood and we have the ‘air in our favour’ we even start imagining that the ‘air’ is ‘singing’ and awakening our dreams … ‘Jhukti Ghataa Gaati Hawaa Sapne Jagaaye’.

And I think that songs like ‘Hawaa Mein Udtaa Jaaye Mora Laal Dupatta Malmal Ka Ho Ji’, ‘Thhandi Hawaa Kaali Ghataa Aa Hi Gayi Jhoomke’, ‘Pawan Deewani’, should fall in this category. . .

Even the wind when it is blowing in its full glory can remind us of someone, someone close or beloved to us …‘Jhoomti Chali Hawaa Yaad Aa Gaya Koyi’

In our movies we have plenty of songs for lovers and of their feelings and emotions, even sometimes they share their secret to the ‘cold breeze’ and invite it to listen to their lovely talks J ‘Sun Ja Aa Thhandi Hawaa’ and also reminding it that it should not be disclosed to anyone other than them. . .

Or somebody separated from his or her beloved can vent his/her feelings in ‘Ye Hawaa Ye Hawaa Ye Hawaa, ‘In Hawaaon Mein In Fizaaon Mein etc.

Actually, for those who are in love we have many many songs for the lovers on either side (male, female 🙂 ), for all types of their moods and emotions depending on the circumstances they are in; ‘Hawaa Ke Saath Saath Ghataa Ke Sang Sang, ‘Sabaa Se Ye Keh Do Ke Kaliyaan Bichhaaye, ‘Thhandi Hawaaein Lehraa Ke Aayen, ‘Ye Hawaa Ye Nadi Ka Kinaara’, ‘Ye Raatein Ye Mausam Nadi Ka Kinaara Ye Chanchal Hawaa, ‘Ye Hawaa Ye Raat Ye Chaandni, ‘Balmaa Khuli Hawaa Mein, ‘Seeli Hawaa Chhoo Gayi’, ‘Saawan Ka Maheena Pawan Kare Sor etc.

Someone alone can even see a true friend and companion in the ‘breeze’ and sing ‘Sun Ri Pawan Pawan Purvaiyya,

We have songs where an individual is thinking of himself as form of ‘blowing wind’ ‘Main Hoon Ek Hawaa Ka Jhonka, ‘Main Jhonka Mast Hawaa Ka’, ‘. . .Ban Ke Hawaa Ka Jhonka, Main Nikal Jaaunga. . .‘.

We even proudly speak of the eastern winds blowing in our country when we sing ‘Mere Desh Mein Pawan Chaley Purwaayi’, or when we speak about our revered river Ganga – ‘Machalti Huyi Hawaa Mein Chham Chham Hamaare Sang Sang Chaley Ganga Ki Lehren’,

And then we have some semi-philosophical songs like ‘Ae Ri Pawan Dhoondhe Kise Tera Mann’, ‘Thhandi Hawaa Ye Chaandni Suhaani Aye Mere Dil Sunaa Koi Kahaani’, ‘Chaley Pawan Ki Chaal’, or when we have turbulence in society our poets penned their thoughts by writing like ‘Aaj Hawaaon Mein Bhi Zehar Hai’ and looking for the ‘winds of change’ in the society.

And some of longing for the ‘. . .Fursat Ke Raat Din’ cannot forget ‘Ya Garmiyon Ki Raat Jo Purwaayiyaan Chalen’. . .

I would also like to mention here these songs ‘O Basanti Pawan Paagal’, and ‘O Pawan Veg Se Udne Waale Ghode , where the ‘pawan’ is invoked with special purpose and to relate ‘speed’ respectively.

Finally, coming to one of the best ‘lullaby songs’ and my favourites in this genre, where a mother is requesting the ‘wind’ or ‘hawaa’ to flow slowly as her child is sleeping … ‘Nanhi Kali Sone Chali Hawaa Dheere Aana’, or even take this lullaby for their male counterparts 🙂  respectively – ‘O Ri Hawaa Dheere Se Chal Sotaa Hai Munna Hamaara’.

And after a sound night sleep the ‘air’ can elevate our mood when we wake up next morning by singing a beautiful ‘prabhaati’ – Hawaa Ye Prabhati Sunaaye

There may be many other songs which I may not have mentioned above and still could be very much relevant to the subject, but then we have to stop, think, ponder and enjoy the today’s song too …

But before that, when we thank God for his bountiful gift to us and this beautiful nature we have to keep asking and seeking answer for ‘Hawaa Chale Jaisebecause He is the creator who only has the answer 🙂 .

For today’s post I am sharing a Non-Filmy song from the album ‘Karadi Katha – Bandar Bindaas Bandar’.

This album was published by ‘Times Music’ in the year 2000 and which I added to my collection on 11.06.2000 (the day 11th June being a special one for us). We were staying at Bareilly then.

This album, though having all children songs, is one of my all-time favourite albums because all the lyrics for this album are penned by Gulzar Saab. Music is composed by ‘3 Brothers & A Violin’.

The list of singers includes some of our greatest singers, lending their voices to the songs in this album – we have Anuradha Sriram, Aditya Narayan, Bhupinder Singh, Hamsika Kishore, Manna Dey, Sanjeevani Bhelande, Shankar Mahadevan, SP Balsubramanyam, Udit Narayan, and child artists Madhumita Birukar, Sneha Tatapudy, Sruthi Sundaram, Sumitra Tatapudy, Vallari Shah and Vidya Sundaram as singers.

Gulzar Saab has given a brief narration before each song and that is just fascinating and it takes us to an altogether different land of animals and forests. And come to think of ‘pure air’, now the forests are the only place remaining where we can get ‘air’ in its pure, clean and natural form (if I am correct). . .

Today’s song is sung by Shankar Mahadevan and child artists have provided the chorus.

(When I was looking for a song for this post and asked suggestions from my family members, the suggestion for this song came from younger daughter and I immediately decided to pick this song for this today’s post)

Let us now enjoy this beautiful song and enjoy the ‘gifts of nature’ and let us take care & control of our ‘emissions’ and ‘pollutants’, and let us pray that we have a ‘natural, pure, hygienic and pollution free’ – ‘Air’ in the future for all of us and the generations coming…

Song – Shabnami Si Hawa Hai, Ud Ke Dekhen To Kya Hai (NFS – Shankar Mahadevn) (2000) Singer – Shankar Mahadevan, Lyrics – Gulzar, MD – 3 Brothers & A Violin
Chorus

Lyrics

(Narration by Gulzar Saab)

Jungle mein bhi aise hi mausam aate hai jaise sheharon mein. Sheharon mein monsoon aata hai, baarish hoti hai to aap log rain-coat pahan lete hai. Jaanwar nahin pahante. Jo darte hai chhup jaate hai gufaaon mein. Aur jinhe achchhi lagti hai baarish, wo baahar aakar khelne lagte hai.
Koyal chahakne lagti hai, papeeha pihu-pihu karne lagta hai.
Garmiyon mein nadi sukhne lagti hai. To unhe paani ki taqleef to hoti hai. Nal to hai nahin ki kholen. Bathroom bhi nahin hai. Nadi sukhi ho to kayi kayi din nahaate bhi nahin. Phir patjhad aa jaati hai, patte girne lagte hai, ped sukh jaate hai, aur baithhne ke liye chhaaon bhi nahin milti unhe.
Phir bahaar aati hai. Sarson phoolti hai. Titliyaan udne lagti hai. Bulbul bolne lagti hai. Mujhe to jungle ke saare mausam achchhe lagte hai.

Lekin sabse achchha lagta hai bahaar ka mausam. Seeli seeli ghaas par shabnami si hawaa, jab udti hai to waah kya baat hai

(Cricket related memories & statistics #1)

During the 15k celebrations on our blog, our beloved Rajaji in his post – ‘Dil To Maane Naa, while congratulating all and wishing that this ‘musical journey’ just goes on and on … mentioned about the next target ‘15921’…!!! Now everyone was thinking of this ‘15921’? But it took Rajaji himself to give some hint and then it was disclosed to everyone. The figure was related to ‘Cricket Statistics’.

At that time, I had decided an article but as I progressed with the selection of the song and finally getting delayed with the article, I decided to do two articles first about the statistics part of my journey on the blog and the second one about my cricket related memories. So, here is the first article being posted today…

The reason for Rajaji’s mentioning of 15921 was Sachin’s runs scored in test cricket and after 15k we should look forward to this new target. This post of mine is too related to statistics but not of cricket though given by the Cricket World Cup around, statistics do also trigger some beautiful memories. However here I am looking for my own statistics on the blog and taking a look on how it has been for me so far on the blog.

My first lyrics contribution ‘Pyaar Ka Badlaa Mujhe Dekho Kaisa Milaa’ was posted on the blog on 13.09.2012 which was 1518th day for the blog and this was the 6633rd post on the blog. I tried my first article for the blog in Feb’2013 and it was posted on 26.02.2013.  This was 1684th day for the blog and this post was the 7565th post. (The song covered in this post was ‘Sang Mere Nikley Thhe Saajan’ from ‘Phir Wahi Raat (1980).

After that it took me 752 days to reach my twenty-fifth post on 20.03.2015 – ‘Na Koi Paisa Na Ilm Banaao Bambai Mein Film and that was 2436th day for the blog. It was the 10962nd post on the blog.

I feel very happy on my ‘quarter century’ and it reminded me of my favourite commentator Sushil Doshi’s words – “aur isi ke saath ye (Dilip Vengsarkar ki) quarter century poori”. . . (I don’t know why but I mostly remember ‘quarter century’ with Sushil Doshi’s commentary is for Dilip Vengsarkar. May be because whenever Vengsarkar was coming to bat he would easily score his first twenty-five runs very quickly 🙂 .

After that I was slowly getting into regular writing of articles for the blog. So, I reached my fiftieth post on 05.09.2015 with – ‘Krishna Krishna Bolo Krishna which was 2604th day and 11385th post for the blog. I entered the nineties on 31.07.2016 and it was 12280th post on the blog and the blog had become 2935 days older then.

Nineties mein aane ke baad, while I was eager to get to my first hundred, on the other side I was constantly remembering Chetan Chauhan one of my most favourite cricketer who never reach a hundred in test cricket, though me and many of friends were always praying for him, and always sincerely wished that he should get a hundred on his name. Well, it took me eighty-two days to reach from ninety to hundred. This was on 21.10.2016, and the song covered was ‘Bade Dinon Mein Khushi Ka Din Aaya’ (very appropriately though) and it was 3017th day for the blog, 12475th post of the blog.

Cricket mein century banaane ke baad jitni khushi ek batsman ko hoti hogi utni hi khushi mujhe bhi huyi 🙂 . By the time I completed my hundred posts on the blog, in the other category that is ‘lyrics contribution’ I had already scored over three hundred. And, since I always think myself an all-rounder (or a good all-rounder at least (not necessarily in cricket)) I was reminded of the many great achievers who scored a ‘hundred’ in both batting and bowling or bowling and batting in test cricket (or one day internationals too).

So, I was very happy on my ‘double’ achievement and it reminded me the doubles by the top famous all-rounders in test cricket. For me it was always of Kapil Dev.

In this process I had also completed a hundred in ‘Devnagri Script’ category and so I was the first to have scored a ‘hundred’ in the three (main) categoris on the blog. After that Sudhir ji reached a hundred in the ‘lyrics contribution’ category and that was a ‘Senior’s entry’ to this ‘triple’s club’ 🙂 .

My one hundred and fiftieth post came on the 3545th day of the blog with this song – ‘Jin Khoja Tin Paayiyaan’ – on 02.04.2018, the post number being 14228th.

Reaching 175 did reminded me of Kapil Dev’s 175 against Zimbabwe, how can anyone forget that? I remember we had gone to the nearby city for some work and when I was heading to my home in the colony few of my friends told me about the score of Indian batting which was very shocking for me. As I reached home Kapil Dev was already on the crease, so what I do was to take the transistor with me in the ground- so that I can concentrate alone (and may be the transmission was not clear inside home, I don’t remember it fully now) near my home where we use to play cricket to listen the commentary there because the match was already very tense. But as Kapil Dev started hitting the ball to each corner of the ground the excitement was on the top and the rest, we all know is a history now.

My first lyrics contribution was the 6633rd post on the blog. And today as I share this post on this 3996th day for the blog, this is the 15091st post on the blog.

Before I joined the blog, the blog had 340 songs penned by Sahir Ludhianvi already covered on the blog and the today’s song is Sahir Saab’s 623rd song on the blog. In between I had also completed a century of my contribution for Sahir Ludhianvi songs on 27.03.2015, with the song “Teri Karam Kahaani Teri Aatma Bhi Jaane“,  on the 2443rd day for the blog, and so far I think have been successful in contributing around 130 songs of Sahir Saab. May be the final tally will cross 150 if everything goes well. The journey is on!!! 🙂

In between I had an opportunity to share a long song six-part song – “Sambhaalo Ae Watan Waalon Watan Apna Sambhaalo“, and I think I can take it as the highest score in an innings in any type of contribution here (lyrics and lyrics in Devnagri script) except the write up/post, and will always remind of the highest score in test cricket which is 400* not out by Brian Lara. 🙂

On the way I do secretly completed my fourth hundred in ‘lyrics contribution’ (like the third one), however nowadays in this ‘age of technology’ the secrets cannot be hold for too longer and when I was silently moving towards another ‘achievement’, which I thought would also pass on secretly, there were already ‘some signals’ asking me about it and I realized that ‘ab raaz chhupaana mushqil hai’. . . 😉

For today’s post too I have selected a song penned by Sahir Saab and composed to music by Ravindra Jain ji. This movie ‘Ham Tere Aashiq Hain’ (1979) was the first collaboration of Sahir Ludhianvi and Ravindra Jain the other being ‘Insaaf Ka Taraazu’ in 1980. All songs for ‘Insaaf Ka Taraazu’ have already been covered on the blog.

Today we get introduced to the film ‘Hum Tere Aashiq Hain’ from 1979.

‘Hum Tere Aashiq Hain’ was directed by Prem Sagar for his home production Prem Sagar Films, Bombay and under the banner of Sagar Art Enterprises. It was presented by Ramanand Sagar.

It had Jeetendra, Hema Malini, Amjad Khan, Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Om Shivpuri, Sujit Kumar, Sheetal, Keshto Mukherjee, Arvind Trivedi, Ram Sethi, Mac Mohan, Shammi, Birbal, Jankidas, Paro, Aashoo, Shobhna Shah, Madhu Shah, Shanti, Aasha, Nirmal Kumar, Chander Mohan Khanna, Dhawan, and Ramlal. Tom Alter makes a guest appearance in this movie.

Screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Kamleshwar and Ramanand Sagar. Suhrid Kar, CL Kavish and Kulwant Jaani were writers for additional screenplay and dialogues. Script and scenario for this movie was written by KK Shukla. Editing of this movie was done by Lachmandass. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 22.11.1979.

This movie had six songs all written by Sahir Ludhianvi and composed to music by Ravindra Jain. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Mahendra Kapoor gave their voices to the songs in this movie.

For the preparation of this post I had requested Atul ji for the records and I can say here that the one going through this details maintained by Atul ji can only realize the efforts put by him and by Sudhir ji too in recording of the statistics on the blog and its retrieval whenever they want to have it for some special occasion (may be some auto ‘alerts’). I salute both of them!!!

Finally remembering all the statisticians in Indian Cricket and paying our tributes to their great works let us enjoy the today’s songs. They may be the first one to know of all the approaching milestones and records like our Atul ji or Sudhir ji (by the way I remember Sudhir Vaidya as a famous statistician in Indian Cricket history) and they all may be first one to know all the raaz’s which the general public may not be aware unless disclosed or made public 🙂 , and may be in other fields of our society we have some secrets/mystery which were never disclosed/solved. . .

And since I have not watched this movie I cannot say and disclose the ‘hidden’ raaz’s of this movie, except this song 😉

However, it seems to be an interesting movie to watch. For now let us enjoy this beautiful song.

dam tod na den jazbaat kahin
khul jaaye na saari baat kahin
ab raaz chhupaana mushqil hai

is raah mein kya jaane kitne
aur aise maqaam aane hai abhi
jeeti huyi chaahat ki baazi

Blog Day :

3996 Post No. : 15092 Movie Count :

4142

Today 27th June 2019, is the eightieth birth anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman (27th June, 1939 – 4th Jan, 1994). We fondly remember him on this occasion and will be always thankful to him for giving us all those great nostalgic songs, great music and many everlasting gems.

As I was looking for a special song for this occasion and while going through his filmography, I decided to select a song penned by Nida Fazli. I thought they worked together in very few films so I was interested to introduce a new movie and I finally zeroed on this lesser known movie ‘Mangal Sutra’ (1981). I think even the song of today is a very lesser known and this might be because of this movie going unnoticed then. Even the filmography of RDB on ‘wiki’ does not have this movie in that list. (Since I could not prepare the details of RDB-Nida Fazli movies together I am deferring it for a post in the future).

‘Mangal Sutra’ was directed by B Vijay for Gaurav Films International, Madras. It was produced by Ravi Kumar. Mrs. Chandrika Shah and Mrs. Era Kalra were Associate Producers of this movie. It had Rekha, Anant Nag, Prema Narayan, Jagdeep, Madan Puri, and Om Shivpuri. The supporting cast included Keshto Mukherjee, Asit Sen, Rajendranath, BM Vyas, Chand Usmani, Jayshree T, Meena T, Guddi, Jezbel, Swaraj, NS Bedi, Shankar Singh, Vinod, Neeta, Sharma, Jailata, Baby Reema, Viju Khote and Madhu. Shashi Puri makes a guest appearance in the movie. And this movie introduced Master Vineet.

Story and screenplay of this movie was written by MD Sundar. Dialogues were written by Snehlata Verma. Editing of this movie was done by P Bhakthavathsalam. Vijaykumar Raichura was the Associate Director of this movie. The movie was passed by Censor Board on 13.03.1981.

This movie had total five songs penned by Kavi Pradeep (one song) and Nida Fazli (four songs). Asha Bhonsle, Bhupinder Singh, Dilraj Kaur, Lata Mangeshkar, Meena and SP Balasubramaniam had given their voices to the songs in this movie. Music for this film was composed by RD Burman.

One movie by the same title was also made in 1947 (as per note in HFGK-Vol-VI), however no songs from this movie seem to be available as of now.

In the movie this song happens to be on the ‘suhaag raat’ of Anant Nag and Rekha. When I listened to this song for preparation of this post I remember to have listen it somewhere earlier but I had forgotten it. This song is nice duet and as mentioned above in the movie it is on the ‘milan ki raat’ where the newlywed couple sings this song. And for that matter I think this song is for all couples even if they are not ‘just newly wed’, they can enjoy it on anniversary or anniversaries or even on the ‘silver –jubilee’ of their marriage 🙂 . The song is sung by my favourite singers Asha Bhonsle and Bhupinder Singh.

It is unbelievable that twenty five years have passed since our beloved RD Burman has left us in 1994. He left us in January 1994. I was posted at Kota then. I got married in June (on his birth anniversary) and I remember the first Hindi movie me and wife watched together at Kota was ‘1942 – A Love Story’. . .

Once again thanking Pancham Da for the lovely, beautiful, exciting music and moments its music has given to us. Let us now enjoy today’s song. With this song the movie ‘Mangalsutra’ (1981) makes its debut on the blog.

Blog Day :

4000 Post No. : 15099

———————————————–——————————————
Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 35
——————————————————————————————

Welcome all to this ‘pehli taarikh’ of July’2019. We look back to this day ‘ten years back’ in the blog. 01st July’2009 started in the blog with the song from ‘Khota Paisa-1958’, it was followed by a song from ‘Sanjog-1961’, third song of the day was from the 1959 movie ‘Chacha Zindabad’, next song was from the movie ‘Chhailaa Babu-1967’. Fifth song of that day came from 1970 – Man Ki Aankhen. The day was finally rounded off with a song from ‘Preet Ki Dori-1971’.

Today on 1 july 2019, we are starting our day in the blog with a song from the 1971 movie ‘Preet Ki Dori’ which made its debut in the blog on ths day ten years ago.

I am aware of the name of this movie because of HFGK Vol-V and our blog, otherwise I was totally in the dark about this movie. I had neither watched the movie nor heard any of the songs of this movie befoore preparing this post.

The song of ‘Preet Ki Dori-1971’ posted in the blog ten years ago is the only song from this movie covered so far inthe blog. Today’s song, second song from the movie is being posted after a full cycle of ten years 😊

Let us see the “Yippeeee” status for all the other movies whose songs were covered on 01.07.2009;

‘Khotaa Paisaa-1958’ – Not Yippeeee’d (04 of 07 songs posted)
‘Sanjog-1961’ – All Songs Covered
‘Chacha Zindabad-1959’- All Songs Covered
‘Chhailaa Babu-1967’ – All Songs Covered
‘Man Ki Aakhen-1970’-All Songs Covered
‘Preet Ki Dori-1971’ – Only 01 song posted

When I checked for the songs in this movie ‘Preet Ki Dori’, and went through the only song posted on the blog, I found that apart from the male version of this song ‘Milaa jo pyaar to ham pyaar ke qaabil na rahe’ which was discussed in the blog, this song also has a female version (which is also a ‘happy version’). However, on checking the HFGK Vol V I found that it does not mention this song in two versions, and the female version is treated as a different song. I request our editors and other knowledgeable readers to throw light on the same. My guess is that the tune is totally different and couple of words are different in the happy version and that could be the reason for this song being treated as s separate song in HFGK. If this Lata song is considered as second version of the first song posted, then with today’s song sung by Lata, all Lata Mangeshkar songs from this movie will be covered.

‘Preet Ki Dori-1971’ was directed by Satish Kumar for ‘K.S. Pictures, Bombay’. It was produced by Suraj Prakash Seth and presented by Krishna Kumari.

It had Tanuja, Ajay Sahni (Parishit Sahni), Bindu, Nazeer Hussain, Jeevan, Lalita Pawar, Asit Sen, Roopesh Kumar, Mohan Choti, Tuntun, Kumud, Mishrilal, Nikita, Maruti, Randhir, Santosh Kumar, Pal Sharma, Rajnath, Radheyshyam, Soni, Nazeer Kashmiri, Maqbool, Abu Bakar, Dalpat Kaka, Ajeet, N.Reddi, Paul Sharma and a parrot ‘Mitthoo’.

Story, Dialogues and Screenplay of this movie was written by R. Priya Darshi. Editing of this movie was done by Kamlakar.

This movie had total five songs written by Indeewar. Music for this movie was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar have given their voices to the songs in this movie. All songs are solo songs where Asha Bhonsle and Lata Mangeshkar have two solos each and one solo song was by Kishore Kumar.

This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 25.09.1971.

Today’s song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and it is lip synced by Tanuja on screen. Parikshit Sahni is also seen in the picturization of this lovely song as the lady sings for her beloved but hiding from him.

None of the songs of this movie seems to be popular, however they are nice songs to watch and listen.

While covering the first song from the movie, Atul ji had mentioned that the movie had flopped at the box office and that resulted in its songs not getting exposure and popularity with movie lovers.

Let us now enjoy today’s song. This movie is available online for watching. Nevertheless I request our knowledgeable readers, who may have watched this movie during its time to throw light on this movie.

Blog Day : 4004 Post No. : 15107

———————————————–——————————————
Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 37
——————————————————————————————

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal-1965’. This movie was introduced on the blog on this day ten years back viz on 5th July 2009.

The movie ‘Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal-1965’ is known mainly for its ‘epic song’ ‘Caravan guzar gaya’ written by Neeraj. The movie made its debut in the blog with this song.

Whenever I come across ‘milestone movies’, ‘epic movies’, or ‘the movies which have left a mark in the annals of Hindi film history’, I feel the urge to find out more about such movies and to share its songs on the blog if the opportunity for that still exists. I get an opportunity to share a song from this mvie today. I think that it is the first opportunity for me to cover a song composed by Roshan, one of my favourite music directors.

Though only one song from the movie is supposed to be left over, I found out that the number of leftover songs is not one but two.

As per HFGK this movie had seven songs (including one multiple version song) only. Movie information on wiki listed eight songs for this movie.

The one song not mentioned in HFGK is a song which plays in the background when the titles of the movie keeps rolling, and this is the song we are going to present here today.

The other remaining song from the movie is penned by Manmohan Tiwari according to HFGK. However, the movie titles only mention the name of Neeraj ji as lyricist for this movie.
So I guess that the today’s song is also written by Neeraj ji.

(I would request our editors and knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.)

Now, for all such movies and their songs where we wish to cover the relevant details, trivia or biographical information about the ‘cast and crew’ of that movie we always have few posts which comes with such information.
Details of this movie and its songs, including trivia etc are covered in posts on the songs , viz.

Mero sainyya gulabiyo ko phool
Isko bhi apnaata chal usko bhi apnaata chal

Caravan guzar gaya gubaar dekhte rahe

After today’s post, just one more song from the movie is left to be covered. I can say that the remaining song will waiting for an appropriate occasion before that song gets covered. 🙂

Looking back at this date ten years back, songs from following movies were covered on the blog on 05th July 2009;

‘Umang-1970’ All Songs covered
‘Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal-1965’
‘Chaar Dil Chaar Raahein-1959’ All Songs covered
‘Jhoola-1962’ All Songs covered
‘Aaraam-1951’ All Songs covered
‘Aarzoo-1950’ All Songs covered

‘Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal’ was directed by R. Chandra for Shri. Vishwabharati Films. It had Tanuja, Rajeev, Leela Chitin, Shobhna Samarth, M.A. Latif, Renuka Rai, S.K. Prem, Ulhas, Bhalla, Raj Kishore, Khurshid Bawra and others.

Music for this movie was composed by Roshan and lyrics were written by Neeraj and Manmohan Tiwari (one song).

Today’s song is sung by Bhupinder Singh. It is a background song that plays with titles rolling on the screen. This song also has a second part which appears at the end of the movie.

Today’s song is a motivational song that seeks to inspire the new generation to bring about a positive change in the society for the upliftment of all. Thisis is in complete contrast to the debut song of this this movie ten years back on the blog, which was a ‘melancholic song’ (as Atul ji mentioned in his post ten years ago).

Let us now listen to today’s song …

The other movies represented on the blog on this day are;

Bhaabhi Ki Choodiyaan-1961 All Songs covered
Mirza Sahiban-1947 All Songs covered

‘Banarasi Babu-1973’ was directed by Shankar Mukherjee for ‘Alankar Chitra’, Bombay’. Shankar Mukherjee was also the producer of this movie.

It had Dev Anand, Rakhi, Yogita Bali, Jeevan, Veena, Manorama, I.S.Johar, Bhagwan, Maruti, Rashid Khan, Rajan Haksar, Shivraj, Polson, S.N.Tripathi, Raj Rani, Brahm Bharadwaj, Kavi Babu, Dhanna, Bhushan Tiwari, Uttam Raj, Jerry, Raj Ratan Malhotra, Qamar Ali, Pradeep Dasgupta, Bhola, Nazeer Kashmiri, Jamini Babu, Neela Rai, Pahalwan, C.K.Dubey, and Miss Kamal Rai. Faryal makes a special appearance in this movie.

Story and Screenplay of this movie was written by K.A. Narayan. Dialogues for this movie were written by Rakesh Pant. The editing of this movie was done by Babu Lavande.

This movie had total seven songs (including one multiple version song). All of its songs were written by Rajinder Krishan, and music was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar gave their voices to the songs in this movie.
Lata Mangeshkar had sung three solo songs, Kishore Kumar had two solo and Asha Bhonsle had one solo songs in this movie. The movie had one duet song sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 20.03.1973.

I remember to have watched this movie during my childhood but I have forgotten most of it by now except its songs. I liked Bure bhi ham bhale bhi ham…ham hain Banarasi Babu very much then, perhaps because of its catchy tune. I had even memorized this song then and I remember it even today. That also happened to be the most popular song from this movie which finished at thirtieth number in the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala list’ of 1973.

I also recall that other songs from this movie were also nice and they were frequently heard on radio or loud speakers. Like, ‘mere peecche ek ladki’ (multiple version song, posted on 03.12.2017), ‘aap yahaan se jaane ka kya loge’, ‘tauba tauba sharaab badnaam ho gayi’, ‘qamar meri lattoo’, and the today’s song ‘koi koi raat aisi hoti hai’.

I was under the impression that these songs must have been covered earlier so it came as a surprise to me when I found that they are yet to be posted on the blog.

For today’s post I have selected the song ‘koi koi raat aisi hoti hai’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar, which a nice hummable song. It is a regular on radio even today.
This song is lip synced by Rakhi on screen and we can see Dev Anand also present there, for whom Rakhi is singing the song but she is not aware that this Dev Anand is not the same that she is looking for. 🙂

Let us now enjoy this song …

Song-Koi koi raat aisi hoti hai (Banarasi Babu)(1973) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

Koi koi raat aisi hoti hai ae ae

Koi koi raat aisi hoti hai ae ae
Jismein koi baat aisi hoti hai
Jo dil se zubaan tak
laayi naa jaaye
Jo dil se zubaan tak
laayi naa jaaye
Aankhon se chhupaayi bhi naa jaaye ae ae
Koi koi raat aisi hoti hai ae
Jismein koi baat aisi hoti hai ae ae

Raushni diye ki bhi
bairi lagey
Bairi lagey
Bairi ee lagey
Chandaa ki chaandni bhi
zehri lagey
Zehri lagey
Zehri ee lagey ae
Sej bhi hai kaliyon se mehki huyi
Nainon mein nindiya hai behki huyi
Aur aane waale aa ke bhi naa aaye
Ae ae ae
Koi koi raat aisi hoti hai ae
Jismein koi baat aisi hoti hai ae ae

Bekhudi dheere dheere
laayi wahaan
Laayi wahaan
Laayi ee wahaan
Beqaraari ee mein bhi mazaa
aaye jahaan
Aaye jahaan
Aaye ae jahaan
Aanchal bhi sar se dhalakne lagaa
Umangon ka saagar chhalakne lagaa
Koi palkon ko aa ke jhukaaye ae ae ae
Koi koi raat aisi hoti hai ae ae
Jismein koi baat aisi hoti hai
Jo dil se zubaan tak
laayi naa jaaye
Jo dil se zubaan tak
laayi naa jaaye
Aankhon se chhupaayi bhi naa jaaye ae ae
Koi koi raat aisi hoti hai ae
Jismein koi baat aisi hoti hai ae ae

Blog Day : 4017 Post No. : 15124

The years roll by – time stops for no one.

And, just like that, it is now 7 years since that day in 2012.

I still remember that day very well – I first got the news on Facebook.

One of my friends had posted “vaada tera vaada”, saying “RIP Rajesh Khanna”.

It shook me – I immediately checked Twitter for validation. (Now Twitter is known to post fake death news from time to time. Not so long ago, they had posted news of Mumtaz’s death – thankfully, fake.) But I wanted a second source.

Sadly, and I realized this very soon with a sinking feeling, the news on 18th July 2012 was not fake. Rajesh Khanna (or Kaka, as he was more affectionately known) HAD passed away. For the past year, he had been suffering from cancer – and the cancer had finally won.

I felt miserable that day. Not that I didn’t know he was suffering from cancer, but I never expected him to go when he did.

That day my Facebook status was
Kya samjhega ye aalam koi
Badaa bhaari hai dil ye mera
Ki le gaye ho saath safar pe tumhaare
Tukda jo kabhi tha dil ye mera

Rubbish poetry, I know – but hey, it did reflect my mood.

Those were the times when I’d seek refuge in my blog. I’d just dump my thoughts onto my blog, for my own sake. It was my way of releasing my feelings, not suppressing them within.

That day too I went to my blog, and wrote a piece for Rajesh Khanna. A personal piece – well, about as personal a piece that one can write about someone he has never met, someone whose many character flaws one acknowledges, and yet someone who was a big part of one’s childhood.

I’ve written about Kaka several times here, and I don’t want to bore readers by repeating stuff.

I’ll just say a few things, and then move on to the song.

Firstly, most times when I discuss Kaka with others (I don’t do much of this anymore), I get the following reactions.
Firstly, a criticism of his acting – mostly his set mannerisms, and his hamming.
Secondly, criticism about him as a person.

I’ve noticed that people who dislike Kaka, tend to dislike him rather intensely. 🙂 On one, or both, of the above counts.

And, I must admit, they would not be wrong.

The first point first.

Without doubt, Kaka’s acting lost its freshness after a few years – and was a big reason for his decline. His superstar success lasted only a few years. During this period, he acted in a whole lot of films. Both he, and his producers, wanted to cash in on his name. Just his name used to be enough to sell a film. Sure, the films were all successful – Kaka holds the record for maximum number of consecutive hits.

But over-exposure comes with its risks. Especially when you’re boxed into a method of acting, expected to conform to set mannerisms, and a set dialogue delivery style. Yes, they made you successful, but style wears out after a while. Kaka’s mannerisms did become an issue. That the storylines also were beginning to get thin, did not help.

Much later in his career, we got to see a different Rajesh Khanna. Not THE superstar anymore, he could afford to act differently, in different roles. Let’s not forget he got his break in films by winning an acting contest, so he couldn’t have been that bad an actor. 🙂

Now, to the second point.

Again, I have to agree. It’s no secret that Kaka allowed success to get to his head. His unprofessional, and possibly even mean, behaviour with colleagues and others, left a lot of people bitter. No doubt many would have been happy to see him go down. A point made even more stark when compared with the upcoming star, Amitabh Bachchan, who was the model professional actor, punctual and polite.

I will not defend Kaka on this front at all. Much later in life, he did realize this himself.

All I will say is, every one of us has failings. Maybe if Kaka’s success had been more gradual, he’d have been a different person. Failure teaches us much more than success – Amitabh had a string of failures before becoming a superstar.

One person’s life is often a lesson for another. Just as people can tell aspiring youngsters “Look at Amitabh – how he struggled early in his career, but his perseverance and professionalism made him a superstar”, they can also say “Look at Rajesh Khanna – how he let success get to his head at a young age, and destroyed his career and relationships”.

One can learn from both.

To me, while I accept these criticisms, I will always remember, and thank, Rajesh Khanna for giving me many wonderful memories in my childhood.

That tilt of the head, that smile, that kurta, that dialogue delivery – today people might mock all of this, but in those days, these are what millions swooned over. That “Pushpa, I hate tears” line is still one of the best-known lines in Hindi cinema.

His films of that era made me feel good when I saw them in the early 70s. Later, when I saw them again, I’d still smile at “rona kabhi nahin rona”, “yahaan wahaan saare”, “nainon mein nindiya hai”, “ye shaam mastaani” and a whole lot of other songs. They’d bring back memories of my childhood.

Like one of my best friends (in class I) would always sing “pyaar deewana hota hai” from Kati Patang. It was his favourite song. I liked it a lot too, but I’d counter him with “ye shaam mastaani”. I know it sounds silly, but these are not just songs for me – they have memories attached to them. Like the incident attached to “o mere dil ke chain” – I’ve discussed the incident here earlier.

And that’s the thing. Each person’s memories are different, and therefore connect with someone is different. And while I acknowledge all Kaka’s failings, I also want to give him back a little bit of that love that I got from watching his films during my childhood.

That’s also the reason for this post. I haven’t written for a while now, but Avinashji requested me to write a post for this occasion. I was hesitant, since I sincerely believe I’ve lost my writing ability. I even told Avinashji “I can’t write anything longer than a tweet now” :-). But he was kind enough to share with me a whole lot of Kaka songs not posted yet, so I could easily pick one.

Now to the song.

Initially I thought of posting a sad song, considering it is on Kaka’s death anniversary. But then I thought again.

What I’d like to remember most of Kaka is the joy I got from watching his films, from before his decline. I think, from up there, he’d also probably like most people to remember him for those films.

So today’s song is from one of his early films – Bandhan (1969). I remember seeing this film long ago, though I don’t remember the story now.

By the way, it is exactly 50 years since this film was released. 1969 was a milestone year for Kaka – this was the year he became a superstar with Aradhana. And Do Raaste was a huge hit too.

The song “jaana hai to jao” shows early glimpses of the superstar-to-be. One can see some of those mannerisms that would become his hallmark in the coming years. And it is always fun to see Kaka and Mumtaz together, even if this was a less-known film than their more famous films to come.

The song is in the voices of Mahendra Kapoor and Asha Bhosle. Not surprising that Mahendra Kapoor was used, considering music is by Kalyanji-Anandji. The MK-KA combo had a huge hit with Upkar (1967), so KA were happy to use MK again. And at that time, Rajesh Khanna was “just another hero”. Kishore Kumar had not yet become his voice. In fact, in this film, even Mukesh sings a happy song for Rajesh Khanna. 🙂

I hope you like the song.

Thanks for the memories, Kaka.

Whatever the world might say about you, remember, when it comes to romance in film,

“tere hi to sar pe mohabbat ka taaj hai”.

Blog Day : 4028 Post No. : 15142

In old days, we had days of specialists. Hero, Heoine would sing songs, play lovey dovey, etc.

Villain’s would made the life of hero and heoine miserable. They would have mujra and or cabarat dancers as part of villain’s set up.
Singing quawwali in disguise would be the response of the lead actors.

Then there was comic side plot. And then character artists, such as parents of the lead actors, siblings of the lead actors etc.

From 1970s onwards, days of multitasking began and specialists found themselves threatened. Here the hero himself would do comedy as well as villainy. The heroine would perform cabarat/ mujra herself.

Fortunately, one did not witness multi tasking till 1960s and specialists ruled the roost those days.

As far as comedy was concerned, Johny Walker was the go to man, and he was followed by Mehmood.

When I try to analyse Johny Walker’s comedy, I find that his comedy often involved being in the wrong books of ladies. Sometimes he would find himself on the wrong side of dogs as well. 🙂

Johny Walker had acted in not one but two movies called “Baazi”, viz “Baazi” (1951) and “Baazi”(1968). “Baazi”(1951) was his debut movie, whereas “Baazi”(1968) came towards the fag end of his career.

“Baazi”(1968), lesser known that the 1951 namesake, was directed by Moni Bhattacharya for Golden Films Production, Bombay. The movie had Dharmendra, Waheeda Rehman, Johnny Walker, Mehmood, Helen, Ansari, Nazir Hussain, Ullhas, Chans Usmani, Amar, Manmohan, Keshto Mukherjee, Pinchoo Kapoor etc in it.

The movie had five songs in it. Two songs have been covered in the past.

Today (29 july 2019) is the 16th remembrance day of Johny Walker (11 November 1926 – 29 July 2003). As a tribute to him, here is a song from “Baazi”(1968). IT is a Johny Walker type comedy song, viz a song where he is in trouble at the hands of the fair sex. It turns out that he sees not one but two ladies simultanously and he finally gets caught by both.

So here is this song from “Baazi”(1968). it is sung by Manna Dey. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

The song shows Johny Walker being taken to task by Helen and Shammi. Singing while being chased by two ladies, that is Johny Walker for us. 🙂

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

Are dil hamaara
uyi
Husn waalon ka akhaadaa
Akhaadaa ho gaya
Apne hi haathon se khud apna
Are apna kabaada ho gaya

Ek anaar
Do beemaar
Ek anaar do beemaar
Kaisi uljhan mein hain pyaar
Badi mushkil hai
Haan Badi mushkil hai
Haan haan badi mushkil hai ae

Do do ulfat ke bazaar
Hoga kaise karobaar
Badi mushkil hain
Haan badi mushkil hai
ho ho badi mushkil hai
Ek anaar do bimaar
Kaisi uljhan mein hai pyaar
Badi
Haan badi
Haan haan
Badi mushkil hai ae

Koyi mere ae
Koyi mere do tukde kar ke
Rok de is bumbaari ko o o o
Koi mere do tukde karke
Rok de is bumbaari ko
Ek tukdaa shole ko de de
Aur ik tukdaa chingaari ko
Is jhamele se yaaron main gharbra gaya aa
Is jhamele se yaaron main gharbra gaya
Dil dhadkane lagaa
Sar bhi chakra gaya
Gaya gaya gaya aa aa
Meri khaatir do do yaar
Meri khaatir do do yaar
Ladne marne ko taiyyaar hain
Badi mushkil hai
Haan badi mushkil hai
Haan haan badi mushkil hai
Ek anaar do beemaar
Kaisi uljhan mein hai pyaar
Badi mushkil hai
Haan badi mushkil hai

Blog Day : 4028 Post No. : 15144

Today, 29th July, is the 66 birthday for Anoop Jalota, the renowned singer of classical and semi-classical music. Known as the Bhajan Samrat, his forte is in the arena of religious bhajans and devotional songs. Here is wishing him many many happy returns of this day.

Anoop was born this day in 1953, in Nainital. His late father, Purushottam Das Jalota has also been a renowned singer of devotional songs himself. Anoop got his initial education in classical music at the Bhatkhande Music Institute in Lucknow. He started his singing career as a chorus singer at All India Radio. Over the years, he has sung popular sugam sangeet and ghazals also. But he has not been as famous and successful in that area. He started singing devotional songs and for that, he has become very popular. He was honored with the award of Padam Shri in 2012.

His songs in Hindi films are quite limited, although I do find two songs by him already on our blog. Today’s song is from the 1977 film ‘Shirdi Ke Sai Baba’. This song is written by Pandurang Dixit and its music is also composed by him. On screen, this song is performed by Manmohan Krishan.

The film is produced by the Sarla Charities Trust, and is directed by Ashok V Bhushan. It is a screen adaptation of the biographical book on Sai Baba by the late Shri Govindrao Dhabolkar. The cast of actors includes Sudhir Dalvi in the title role, Manmohan Krishan, Raj Mehra, B M Vyas, Usha Chauhan, Beerbal, Nazeer Kashmiri, C S Dubey, Gurbachan Singh, Jyotsana Kirpekar, Preetam Balley, Vatsala Deshmukh, Ratanmala Pandit, Bhawna, Master Teeto, and Master Raju. The film has many special and guest appearances, viz., Rajendra Kumar, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Premnath, Manoj Kumar, Madan Puri, Sachin, Dhiraj Kumar, Paintal, Krishan Dhawan, Satish, and Kuljeet.

Geet Kosh lists 9 songs for this film. Some are traditional, and the remaining are penned by Dev Krishan, Manoj Kumar and Pandurang Dixit. The latter is also the music director  for this film. One song of this film is already showcased here on our blog.

In this song, the on screen performer is Manmohan Krishan. He is leading a few others, including some police personnel and taking them to the place where Sai Baba resides.

This song was recorded in 1977, when Anoop would have been just 24 years of age. One can make out the difference in the quality of the voice – in this song and his singing 40 years hence, in the current period.

The Bhajan itself is written and composed very beautifully. Exhorting the listener to meditate on the universality of the message of brotherhood, and the underlying unity and commonalities of all the religions and beliefs. That is the message of Sai Baba – ‘Sab Ka Maalik Ek’ – that the Supreme One is the One and same for all people.

Song – Sumar Manwa. . . Sumar Re Panchtatva Suvichaar  (Shirdi Ke Sai Baba) (1977) Singer – Anup Jalota, Lyrics – Pandurang Dixit, MD – Pandurang Dixit

Blog Day : 4030 Post No. : 15147

It is that day of the year again.

The 31st of July.

A date that doesn’t need any reminder for lovers of HFM.

Of all the days in the calendar, a few stand out – and the 31st of July is one of them.

For it is the death anniversary of one of the most loved and respected figures of the Hindi film industry, Mohammad Rafi, respectfully referred to as Rafisaab.

Today on his 39th death anniversary, we on this blog, remember him with great fondness and respect.

I’ve written about Rafisaab many times here on this blog. In fact, there’s no one I have written about more than about Rafisaab.

To be honest, there really isn’t anything more for me to say that I haven’t already said before.

How I, growing up in a Kishore-dominated era, fell in love with Rafisaab’s voice.

How I’ve done all-nighters listening to Rafisaab songs, completely losing track of time.

How much I respect Rafisaab for being such a good human being, inspite of having the power to abuse his position, if he had wanted.

I’ve written about all this – and more. And I don’t want to bore readers here by repeating stuff.

Not that I get bored of writing about Rafisaab. Never. When I don’t ever get bored of listening to his voice, how can I possibly get bored of writing about him? It is such a pleasure, and an honour, to write about Rafisaab.

So whether I have any new material or not, I will write about Rafisaab – even if it is only a few lines. That is the very least I can do for someone who has given me so much joy in life. And on his Remembrance Day, I just have to write a few lines for him – to thank him for everything.

Different people make a mark in this world for different reasons. Not all leave a legacy of course, but I doubt even those who do, have any idea of the magnitude of the legacy they would leave behind. And its endurability.

I doubt Rafisaab thought about all this when he was alive. He was a simple man, happy to earn his living through the one profession that he loved, and knew he was loved for – singing. Even for that, he was humble enough to always point upwards, to God, to suggest He was to thank for everything.

Rafisaab was very soft-spoken. For all his animation while singing, he was an extremely shy person in conversation and avoided interviews. Which is also why there are very few interviews of him available out there. It is our loss, but then that was the person he was. At least we have his songs, and anecdotes of those who knew him with us.

Rafisaab was devoted to his profession – he would do riyaaz for hours. He enjoyed spending time with his family. And enjoyed playing badminton. And good food. A man who always had a smile on his lips, who never thought ill for others – on the contrary, he went out of his way to help others.

A simple man – but what a legacy!

One that he would never have imagined during his lifetime.

Even today, 39 years after he is gone, there isn’t a day when his songs are not playing on radio. There isn’t a day when HFM lovers from around the world are not listening to his songs on whatever device they have. Today, thanks to technology, we have access to music on demand.

Yes, Rafisaab has enriched the lives of millions by his sheer voice. And that, for decades. And, I am sure, will continue for decades too. Such is the love people have for Rafisaab. It transcends generations.

This is another aspect that makes me really happy for him. It is great to see young generations today, even teenagers, listen to Rafisaab’s songs. Of course, their music interests are current too – and they should be. But from what I’ve seen, many of them are still happy to listen to old HFM songs – and Rafisaab, of course. Which is why I say Rafisaab’s voice transcends generations.

In my own case, I know my next generation is also very fond of Rafisaab. My niece’s husband invariably plays Rafisaab songs in his car. Not just for me, but for himself too. Not that my niece complains. She is herself very fond of Rafisaab. 🙂 They like current songs too, but Rafisaab is a fixture in their car. Especially 1960s songs like “dil ke jharoke mein”, “pukaarta chala hoon main” and “deewana hua baadal”. I swear, I did nothing to influence them – it all happened by itself. 🙂 Actually, my niece’s father-in-law is also a Rafisaab fan, so maybe that played a role too.

Now my niece has a kid – he is not even 3, but I have a feeling he will also soon be listening to Rafisaab. 🙂

I will not be surprised if this is the story in many other families too. I hope it is – then Rafisaab’s legacy is in safe hands.

Rafisaab deserves nothing less. A person with such a divine voice, a person who had such a good heart, who did good for so many, deserves every little bit of love and respect he gets.

I always have a warm feeling, and feel energized, when I discuss, or write about, Rafisaab. His songs immediately come to my mind, THAT voice, those intonations in the rendering. I get lost, happily so, thinking about his songs.

I can keep going on and on, but then I will be repeating what I’ve written in the past. And will be boring the readers. 🙂

So I’ll just move on to the song for today.

This is from Jaani Dushman (1979). A decade right up my sleeve, given that I’m a 1970s boy. Avinashji, himself a huge Rafisaab fan, sent me the lyrics and requested me to do a write-up.

By the late 70s, Rafisaab had regained his place in public mindspace. The first half of the decade had been totally dominated by Kishore Kumar (inspite of a few Rafisaab hits). But by the mid-70s, Rafisaab began coming back. I remember Laila Majnu (1976) songs being a success. A year later, he had chartbuster hit songs in Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Hum Kisise Kam Nahin (1977) and Apnapan (1977), to mention just three films.

And so he continued, with hits in Abdullah (1980) and Karz (1980), right until his untimely death.

Jaani Dushman (1979) was during his revival phase.

The film has the popular, foot-tapping Rafisaab-Asha Bhosle duet “tere haathon mein pehna ke chudiyaan”, but also the song of today “chalo re doli utthao kahaar” (which comes multiple times in the film, if I remember right), was popular too.

The film itself is a multi-starrer in keeping with the trend of the time. Those were the days of multi-starrers – many commercial films had two or more lead heroes and heroines. JD went a step further, and must be considered a mother of multi-starrers – it had at least 5 “heroes” – Jeetendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Vinod Mehra, Shatrughan Sinha and Sunil Dutt. And Rekha, Reena Roy, Bindiya Goswami, Neetu Singh and Sarika amongst the “heroines”. Other movies of that era that were multi-multi-starrers that come to mind are Naagin (1976) and the Burning Train (1980).

I remember seeing the film at the time, but given my pathetic memory, I don’t remember too much of it. I do remember that it was meant to be a horror film of sorts, where a monster is supposed to murder every newly-wed bride. Something like that.

The songs of the film were quite popular, and the film too did well I think.

“Chalo re doli utthao kahaar” is a background song, picturised during the bidaai of a daughter as she leaves her parents’ home. It is a typical Rafisaab song – he was very good at emotional, background songs of this type. With their ebbs and flows.

Talking of emotional, background songs, am reminded of Ravi, the composer of songs of Waqt (1965) saying he had insisted with the Chopras on Rafisaab singing “waqt se din aur raat”, though Mahendra Kapoor, and not Rafisaab, was generally their preferred singer. He had said that this song would suit Rafisaab more than anyone else.

Similarly Kalyanji Anandji picked Rafisaab to sing a couple of lines as background song in that death scene in Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978) – “zindagi to bewafa hai, ek din thukraayegi”. Anandji said in an interview that he was a bit embarrassed to ask Rafisaab to sing those lines, because he had no other song in the film, and it was only a couple of lines. But he wanted them to be in Rafisaab’s voice. Without the slightest ego, Rafisaab rendered those lines with his usual high standards.

L-P, ever loyal to Rafisaab, even during Kishore Kumar’s peak, used him to render the emotional background song “nafrat ki duniya ko chhod ke” of Haathi Mere Saathi (1971) even though Kishore Kumar sings the songs picturised on Rajesh Khanna.

This song for today is also an L-P composition. I request you to please listen to this song – and remember Rafisaab today.

Rafisaab, you will always be in our hearts. The years roll by, but the love and respect does not diminish one bit. For what you’ve given the world, millions are ever grateful to you.

Personally, I can’t thank you enough, hence this post as a humble tribute.

(As mentioned above, lyrics for today’s song have been provided to me by Avinashji. I thank him for providing me these lyrics).

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 84 #Remembering Kishore Kumar on his birth anniversary#
——————————————

Today 4th August (2019) (4 August 1929 – 13 October 1987) is the 90th birth anniversary of the ‘Versatile Genius’ Kishore Kumar or Abhas Kumar Ganguly or as he always liked to introduce himself as – Kishore Kumar Khandwewaala.

I have mentioned in my earlier posts that I cannot forget Khandwa when I am writing about Kishore Kumar. The place has been associated with his name forever and I have fond memories of visiting Khandwa, his ‘Gouri-Kunj’ and his memorial there on Indore road, when I was at Nagpur from 2015-2017.

For today’s post I am not going to discuss more about ‘Khandwa’ or ‘Gouri-Kunj’, but the song I am going to present today has a ‘Khandwa connection’ because I came across this song during my visit to Khandwa in ‘2015’ when I was preparing a post with a Kishore Kumar song 🙂

This being a song from the seventies I thought I would share it on the blog someday.
When I listen to this song first time (a lesser heard one), I had feeling of hearing it years back, may be on radio. This is a song from the 1971 movie – ‘Jai Baangala Desh’. Both the song and the movie name were new for me except the information about this movie and its song mentioned in HFGK Vol V which I was possessing.

I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and about its songs.

‘Jai Bangalaa Desh-1971’ was directed by I.S. Johar.

He also wrote the story of this movie and was also the producer of this movie.

The cast of this movie includes I.S. Johar, Ambika Johar, Rajeev Johar, Kaveri Choudhary (Bangladesh), S.N.Bannerjee, Ram Kamlani, Nazeer Kashmiri, Madhumati, Lakshmi Chhaya, Shefali, Pal Sharma, Bhagwan, Dilip Dutt, Polson, Jery, Tuntun, Ramesh Johar, Anand Vij, Satyadeep, Ratan Kashmiri, Master Alankar, Baby Tabassum, Ranger(Dog) and Radha in guest appearance and others.

This movie had total eight sound tracks including title music, theme music and one Dog chase music released on the records of this movie.

The remaining five songs were composed by Kalyanji-Anandji, while three lyricists namely Indeewar wrote three songs, Qamar Jalalabadi and Farooq Qaiser penned one song each.

Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mahendra Kapoor and Sushma Shreshtha had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar (the only song he had in this movie) and composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.
Lyrics are by Indeewar.

(This song plays in the background, and I am unable to identify the actor and other supporting actors shown in the picturization of this song. I would request knowledgeable readers to help in identifying of the actors please.)

On ‘friendship day’ today and paying our tributes to Kishore Kumar, I selected this song sung by Kishore Kumar, which is giving a message of ‘humanity’ and ‘brotherhood’ among the many other songs which I had thought I can share on this occasion today.
Moreover, I personally think that ‘music’ is the best friend making friends all over and bringing people together cutting across the barriers of caste, creed, race and religion all over the world.

So far, on the blog we have 1149 songs of Kishore Kumar posted out of the total 2709 songs (our statistics). And that means we still have a long way to go getting may of the Kishore Kumar songs on the blog. And day to day while listening the radio I am coming across many of his beautiful songs of ‘many moods’ from the eighties which we have to bring here on the blog.

Let us now listen and enjoy today’s song…

With this today’s song the movie ‘Jai Baangla Desh-1971’ is makes a debut on the blog!!!

(Note: – HFGK Vol V mentions that this movie was revised and passed with a new title of ‘Aage Badho’ in 1971 (13.09.1972). The first version of this movie ‘Jai Baangla Desh-1971’ was passed by Censor Board on 26.10.1971).

Jag ko tyaag sikhaaya hai
Kabhi Mohammad ban ke basaaya
Makka aur madeene ko o
Isaa ban ke chhalni kiya
Maine kabhi apne seene ko
Naanak ban ke
Kabhi gyaan ke deep jalaane aata hoon
Ek hoon main par
Naye naye roopon mein aata jaata hoon
Main hoon ek
Roop anek
Main hoon ek
Roop anek

Kabhi Quraan
To Kabhi Bible
Kabhi Ved kabhi Geeta hoon
Kabhi hoon Mariam
Kabhi Yashoda
Kabhi Fateema
Seeta hoon
Mere naam ki de ke duhaayi
Jo logon ko ladaate hain
Wo hain bande dharm ke andhe
Wo na kabhi mujhe paate hain
Aata nahin ladaane ko main
Mel karaane aata hoon
Ek hoon main par
Naye naye roopon mein aata jaata hoon
Main hoon ek
Roop anek
Main hoon ek
Roop anek

Ho badhte hai jab jab paap dharti par
Paap mitaane aata hoon
Ek hoon main par
Naye naye roopon mein aata jaata hoon
Main hoon ek
Roop anek
Main hoon ek
Roop anek
Main hoon ek
Roop anek
Main hoon ek
Roop anek

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 41
——————————————————————————————

Though I have been discussing Hindi movie songs in the blog for more than a decade now, it is not as if I had watched too many movies during my “formative” years. I recall having watched a few movies in early 1970s, with the last of these movies being “Zindagi Zindagi” (1972) in 1972.

My movie watching spree began in 1978 (after six years) when I joined college and got “freedom” that I as a college goer was “supposed” to enjoy. 🙂 And I fully misused my freedom, by watching movies when I should have been attending my classes.

It was during this movie watching spree that I watched not just the current movies but also those movies which had come between 1972 and 1978 which I had missed during their time. This included all Amitabh Bachchan hit movies like “Zanjeer” (1973), “Deewaar”(1975), “Sholay” (1975) etc.

When my pre teen movie watching ended in 1972, I had watched very few movies. I could only identify Rajesh Khanna, Tanuja, Mumtaz etc thanks to Rajesh Khanna movies like “Haathi Mere Saathi”(1971) and “Apna Desh” (1972) that I got to watch at that time. Thanks to watching “Haqeeqat”(1964) is an open field show at night in my railway colony, I became familiar with Dharmendra. In another such free show, I watched “Dil Diya Dard Liya”(1966) and that is how I became familiar with Dilip Kumar.

That was about it. I had not watched any movies of Rajendra Kumar, Raj Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar, Saira Bano etc till 1978 !

During my “catching up with lost time” movie watching spree, I watched “Resham Ki Dori”(1974) some time in 1978 or 1979. This movie, as I know now thanks to HFGK, was directed by Atmaram for Modern Pictures Bombay. The movie had Saira Bano, Dharmendra, Kumud Chhugaani, Rajendranath, Sujit Kumar, Sajja, Ramesh Deo, Rajan Haksar, Jayshree T, Kundan, Meena T, Bhagwan, Shabnam, Sapru, Shivraj, Jankidas, Keshav Rana, Sundar, Master Sachin, Ramlal, Bhagwan Sinha, Leela Mishra, Radheshyam, Chaand Usmani (Special appearance), Kanwar Ajit, Suresh, Murad etc in it.

Except Dharmendra, almost every other actor in the movie was “new” and unfamiliar for me. Many of them continued to remain unfamiliar to me for decades. For instance, I was not aware which actress played the sister of Dharmendra in this movie. Somehow I had erroneously assumed that she was called Urmila Bhatt (I find , to my surprise that she is not even there in the cast). Only now, when I checked up the starcast, I realised that the sister had to be Kumud Chhugaani.

The movie had six songs in it. The most popular song of the song was the raakhi song and it was posted exactly ten years ago. So that means that this day ten year ago was the festival of Rakshabandhan. And as was the practice in the blog, Rakhi related songs were discussed on the blog on that day (5 august 2009).

Song Movie Remarks
Behna ne bhai ki kalaayi pe pyaar baandha hai (Reshan ki dori)(1974) 2 songs covered out of 6
dil se dil ki dor baadhi chori chori (Chaayaa)(1961) YIPPEED (all 7 songs covered)
Aaya tumpe dil aaya (Do Ustaad)(1959) YIPPEED (all 8 songs covered)
Soona hai mere dil ka jahaan (Devtaa)(1956) 4 songs covered out of 8
Dil tootnaa thha dil toot gaya (Dilruba)(1950) YIPPEED (all 11 songs covered)
Marne ki duaayen kyun maangoon (Ziddi)(1948) YIPPEED (all 9 songs covered)

As can be seen, six songs from six movies were covered on 5 august 2009. Four out of these six movies have been YIPPEED by now.

Today, we take up one of the unYIPPEED movies, namely “Reshan ki dori”(1974).

The two songs of this movie that have been covered till now are

S N Song Song number in blog Date of posting
1 Bahnaa ne bhaayi ki kalaayi se pyaar baandhaa hai 1729 5-Aug-09
2 Chamka paseena ban ke nageena 9116 8-Dec-13

Today, as part of blog ten year challenge (2009-2019), here is a song from “Resham Ki Dori”(1974). This song is a lovers’s song. It is sung by Rafi, with a few sweet nothings uttered by Saira Bano (I guess). Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

The song is picturised on Dharmendra and Saira Bano. It was for the first time in this movie that I had seen Saira Bano in a movie. I had not seen her in “Padosan”(1968) because my elders did not take me to watch this (or other well known movies) of those days.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by avinash Scrapwala.

Lyrics (Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)

Sone ke gahne
Kyun tune pahne
Kaaya teri khud kanchan hai ae
Gesu banaaye to
Phool kyun sajaaye
Tera badan khud gulshan hai ae
Achchhaa
Sone ke gahne
Kyun tune pahne ae
A haa haa

Heere ki angoothhi bhi
Lagti hai jhoothhi
Itni chamak teri aankhon mein ae
Ja ja
Jhoothhe

Moti ki maala
Kyun pahni baalaa
Moti chhupe hai tere daanton mein
Haay Raam
Moti chhupe hai tere daaton mein
Ghadi ghadi darpan ke ae
Oye hoye hoye hoye
Ghadi ghadi darpan ke ae
Aage khadi kyun
Tera badan khud darpan hai
Hato ji
Sone ke gahne
Kyun tune pahne
Kaaya teri khud kanchan hai ae ae
Sone ke gahne
Kyun tune pahne
Hmm mm
how romantic

Sooraj sa chamke
Jab tera mukhda
Maathe pe bindiya sajaayi kyun
Haan
Ha h h h sach
Laali bina honthh laal hai tere
Hothhon pe laali lagaayi kyun
Hmm mm
Hothhon pe laali lagaayi kyun
Singaar ki ee
Haaye ae main mar jaawaan
Singaar ki tujhe kya hai zaroorat
Tera singaar tera yauvan hai

Sone ke gahne
Kyun tune pahne
Kaaya teri khud kanchan hai ae ae
Laa laa laa laa
Gesu banaaye to
Laa laa laal laa
Phool kyun sajaaye
Laa laa laal laa
Tera badan khud gulshan hai ae
Hmm hmm hmm hmm
Sone ke gahne kyun tune pahne

Blog Day : 4069 Post No. : 15206

Today (8 september 2019) is the birth anniversary of Bhupen Hazarika (8 September 1926 – 5 November 2011).

It is appropriate that we honour him in the blog with a song. Lyrics of the song (sent by Avinash Scrapwala) is there with me. When I listened to the song, I wanted to listen to the original Assamese song. That opened a Pandora’s box. I discovered such a goldmine of information about Bhupen Hazarika, Assam, Assamese culture and History etc that it became a case of information overload for me. Now I have so much information to discuss that I do not known where to begin.

The thought that immediately came to my mind is whether Bhupen Hazarika has got his due recognition. The answer is, yes, belatedly, but his contribution has been recognised and he received Bharat Ratna this year in 2019. A posthumous recognition, and a richly deserved one.

The contribution of Bhupen Hazarika in putting North East part of India in general and Assam in particular and bringing its rich culture to the notice of outsiders is immense.

He began very young and visited all over the world and became a truly cosmopolitan Indian. And he never forgot his roots !

Assam and North East is a remote part of India, and it was considered a “punishment” post for Indians living in other parts of the country. That was mainly because this part of the country was neglected and underdeveloped. The aspirations and feelings of this part of the country were not properly addressed. This led to feeling of alienation and led to separatist movements and militancy.

I had the experience of being posted in this “punishment” posting area from 2000 to 2003. These three years helped me understand Assam and North East first hand by interacting with the natives of the region. And I realised how their hopes, aspirations, demands etc were falling into deaf ears for decades.

Now, for the last few years, attempts has been made to make the people of north East region feel like every one else. The infrastructure works that were languishing for decades have been fast tracked. In 2000, I was posted in Lumding division. The MG line from Lumding to Badarpur and beyond in South Assam was planned for BG conversion but the progress was abysmally slow. During the last few years, this project was fast tracked and now we finally have BG line between Lumding and South Assam. A travel between Silchar to Lumding, which took 12 hours now takes five hours. This remote area now feels more mainstream with rest of Assam. Assam itself now feels more mainstream in India than ever before.

In the past, roads and bridges would not be constructed in border areas because China used to object. Now the government ignores such Chinese protests and goes ahead with the construction work. That is how the long pending demands of Assam and North East were met. Bogibeel Bridge, which was a demand since 1985, in the agreement signed between AASU and Indian Government was gathering dust for decades before this bridge finally got constructed and inaugurated in 2019. One year ago, another bridge (which too was not getting constructed in the past because of Chinese protests) got finished and was inaugurated. This bridge over river Lohit, connecting Dhola and Sadia ( the longest road bridge in India), was very appropriately named as Bhupen Hazarika Bridge.

At a time when North East felt alienated from rest of India, it was people like Bhupen Hazarika who kept their morale high and kept their hopes alive, and kept their faith in India intact.

Not just India, even the neighboring Bangladesh regards him highly. His iconic Assamese folk song Manush Manusher Jonno (Humans are for humanity) was chosen to be the second most favourite number after the National anthem of Bangladesh, in a Bangladeshi opinion poll.

Many of his Assamese songs became known all over India after their Hindi versions were made. One such album of his songs was “Main aur Mera Saaya”(1993). Here, Gulzar translated some of Bhupen Hazarika’s iconic Assamese songs into Hindi.

These Hindi songs became so popular that they are sung all over India by artists and they are performed by school children in their cultural programmes.

Here is the song “Ek Kali Do Pattiyaan” from this album. Bhupen Hazarika had sung this song originally in Assamese as “Eti Kuhi Duti Paat”. This song has subseuently been sung by many other artists, in Assamese as well as Hindi, and I guess in other languages as well.

Here is this goose bump inducing folk song from Assam, beautifully translated into Hindi by Gulzar. The song is sung and composed by Bhupen Hazarika.

As mentioned above, the lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

Saaye se bedaar huye

Tambaran si baahon ke

Dhol maadal bajne lage
Maadal aise baaje re
Lakhon milke naache re
Aaya ek toofaan naya
Daanav dar ke bhaag gaya
Maadal aise garja re
Daanav dar ke bhaga re
Daanav dar ke bhaga

Ek kali do pattiyaan
Naazuk naazuk ungliyaan
Tod rahi hai kaun ye
Ek kali do pattiyaan

ढोल मादल बजने लगे
मादल ऐसे बाजे रे
लाखों मिलके नाचे रे
आया एक तूफान नया
दानव डर के भाग गया
मादल ऐसे गरजा रे
दानव डर के भागा

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 86 # Asha Bhonsle – Happy 86th birth anniversary#
————————————————————————————

Yesterday 8th September 2019 was the eighty-sixth birth anniversary (born on 08th Sep’1933) of the legendary singer Asha Bhonsle.

We are all aware of the greatness and versatility of this voice and cannot imagine our HFM (for me Marathi film music too) without her voice. She has been ruling the hearts over seven decades or more than that now…

I am not going into the details of her biography, famous songs, popular songs, awards etc etc because her name itself speaks for the ‘greatness’ and her ‘epic’ journey in our film industry and the name itself carries such a vastness in it that one can only imagine the efforts one have to put in writing about her journey in HFM. And that is why I salute to all the authors who have written the various books on her.

She has come a long way and immortalized herself in the Hindi Film music with her singing. We have been reading about her initial struggle and competition with other singers including her own sister the great legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. But Asha Bhonsle carved out a special place for her and remain favorites of many music lovers.

Her popularity keeps increasing and was always increasing in other countries too. And how popular she was in other countries than India, I came to know while I was once travelling in a UAE based airlines from Abu Dhabi to Ahmedabad. In the flight ‘entertainment box’ when I was looking for various Hindi film audios to listen during the travel, I came across a compilation of Asha Bhonsle containing almost fifty songs starting from ‘Mr John ya Baba Khan’ to the very latest song, I think, from ‘Begum Jaan (2017)’. Her introduction was given very aptly mentioning her as the ‘true Queen of Melody’ and her seven decades long career in Bollywood and singing film and non-film songs and songs in many languages too. (I do not remember the exact words now, but it was very well mentioning of her great achievements in that brief intro).
Then there were compilations of other Indian singers too like Mohd Rafi, Yesudas, Shreya Ghoshal, and Lata Mangeshkar. (I think Kishore Kumar’s songs were not there and songs from Yesudas and S.P. Balasubramaniam were in regional languages of India).

But the interesting thing that surprised me was when I read the intro given for Lata Mangeshkar. She was mentioned as the ‘another giant singer in Bollywood and sister of the great Asha Bhonsle’ :). And like other singers (that I mentioned above) the quantity of songs included for Lata Mangeshkar too was around 20-25 songs only.

One can understand my feelings, as an Indian, when I read that intro and the thoughts going through my mind. Well, nothing wrong in that if we see the other point of view, and for us both of them will remain ‘great and immortal’ always forever.

And, I think today’s song is a befitting song for the occasion of the 86th birth anniversary of Asha Bhonsle. This song epitomises much of what she is known for.

The song is from the movie ‘Koraa Badan-1974’ directed by B.S. Shad for ‘Brar Productions, Bombay’ and was a ‘social movie’ (passed by Censor Board with ‘A’ certificate).

It had Reeta Anchan, Harinder, Bindu, Jayshree T., Paintal, Montu, Rajan Haksar, Shera, Yash Sharma, Prakash Ved, Meher Mittal, Vijay Tandon.
Also, it had Sunil Dutt, Mala Sinha, Dev Kumar, Subhash Ghai, Shobhna in ‘Special appearances.

This movie had six songs penned by Babu Singh Maan (three songs), Kashmir Qadar (two songs) and Mahendra Dehalvi (one song).
Songs for this movie were composed by Vedpal Verma, and Shruti, Kant Verma and Ajay Kumar were his assistants.
Asha Bhonsle, Hemlata, Krishna Bose and Manhar had given their voices to the songs in this movie.
Background music for this movie was given by Mohammad Shafi.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 15.03.1974 with restricted viewing for ‘Adults’ only.
(It seems that there was another movie with the same title in ‘2003’, and the online videos of this 2003 movie is available which is wrongly described as movie of 1974.

Today’s song is written by Mahendra Dehalvi and composed by Vedpal Verma. On screen it is performed by Jayshree T., and sung by Asha Bhonsle.

When I initially shared this song in 2013 (on 08.06.2013) the video of this song was available and the link no longer exists
However, audio of this song is available. (there is a little difference in lyrics in the video and the audio of the songs i.e. only for repeating of the same lines in ‘antara’ and the ‘mukhda’ at the end of the song.
The lyrics given are as per audio link available and I have keep the ‘mukhda’ at the end of the song as per the video link).

let us now enjoy this song …

With today’s song the movie ‘Koraa Badan-1974’ makes its debut on the blog.

I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 45
——————————————————————————————

The date today 22 september 2019. It is a sunday.

Ten years ago, this date (22 september 2009) was a working day. I was in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Despite that day being a working day, I had covered as many as eight songs on that day. Posting six or more songs in a day used to be no big deal for me.

Here are the details of the eight songs that were covered on 22 september 2009.

Song (Movie title) Year Posting time Remarks
Aandhiyaan gham ki yoon chalin (Zeenat) 1945 1:29 All Songs covered on the blog
Wo marne se nahin darte (Shama Parwaana) 1954 2:19 All Songs covered on the blog
Bahaaye chaand ne aansoo (Lagan) 1955 5:00 TWO/out of Eight songs covered
Ritu aaye ritu jaaye (Hamdard) 1953 5:38 All Songs covered on the blog
Mujh ko tum jo mil gaye (Detective) 1958 7:10 Seven/out of Eight songs covered
Idhar to haath la pyaare (Aakhri Daao) 1958 7:59 All Songs covered on the blog
Bahaaron se poochho (Mera Ghar Mere Bachche) 1960 8:11 Five/out of Nine songs covered
Dharti 1970 8:34 All Songs covered on the blog

As can be noticed, I was awake till 2:19 AM after midnight and I had already posted two songs for the day. They I went back to sleep and woke up before 5 AM. Then I posted six more songs. The eights and final song for the day was posted at 8:24 AM !

Those were the days when I could post eight songs in a day by early morning ! What productivity ! 🙂

I hardly slept those days and that did not even affect my health. My wife, whenever she would join me would make adverse comments about my tendency to sleep less. Her persistent nagging may have finally borne fruit because these days I neither keep awake that late nor do I wake up so early. And I no longer post that many songs in a day. I actually wonder now how I was that motivated one decade ago.

By contrast from ten years ago, today (22 september 2019)I have so far posted just one post.

Here is the second song from the day, when it is already evening. This song is part of the blog ten year challenge. As can be seen from the table above, four out of eight movies have been YIPPEED by now. So only the remaining movies can be taken up for this ten year challenge.

The song taken up for this challenge is from “Lagan”(1955). This movie was produced by directed by O P Dutta for O P Films, Bombay. The movie had Nalini Jaiwant, Sajjan, Shammi, Randheer, Raj Mehra, Baby Naaz, Pappu, Om Prakash, Shamlal, Ram Avtar, Baij Sharma, Pt Iqbal, Shivrj, Uma Dutt, Parshuram, Kanwar Kesho etc , with guest appearance by David.

The song under discussion is the third song out of eight songs that this movie has.

The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricisr. Music is composed by Hemant Kumar.

Only the audio of this song is available. The song appears to be a lullaby song. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scparwala.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 47
——————————————————————————————

When one discussed a movie of 1940s, one often assums by default that it must be a “boring” movie, one which may not hold the interest of later generation movie goers. And when one finds that this movie has Ashok Kumar and Leela Chitnis in lead roles, people who have seen them in character roles may consider dropping the idea of watching the movie.

But what if I tell you that this movie from 1941 is a laugh riot ? And that this movie was the original inspiration of “Padosan”(1968) ? I am sure that people will suddenly get interested in knowing more about this movie.

“Jhoola”(1941) was directed by Gyan Mukherji for Bombay Talkies, Bombay. This movie, a “social” movie had Leela Chitnis, Ahok Kumar, Shah Nawaz, V H Desai, Mumtaz Ali, Karuna Devi, Shahzadi, Rajkumari Shukla, Meenu Cooper, M A Aziz, Kaazi, Master Laxman, Leeladhar Sharma, Iqbal Bai, B M Dixit, Jyoti, Dulaari, Nana Palsikar etc in it.

The movie had eleven songs in it. Five of these songs have been covered in the past. This movie has a song that goes Ek chatur naar karkar singaar . Yes, I mentioned that this movie is the original source for “Padosan”(1968) and this song is the inspiration of that famous “Padosan”(1968) Kishore Kumar Manna dey laugh riot.

If “Padosan”(1968) had Mehmood then “Jhoola”(1941) had his father Mumtaz Ali lip syncing the wonderful stage dance song Main to Dilli se dulhan laayaa re.

“Jhoola”(1941) had made its debut in the blog on 26 september 2009, viz exactly ten years ago, with the evergreen song Chali re chali re meri naao chali re .

This day that year ten years ago, the blog was at its usual prolific best. Six songs from six different movies were covered in the blog on that day. Five out of six of those movies have already been covered in the blog. “Jhoola”(1941) remains the only un YIPPEED movie from that day.

Here are the details of the songs that were discussed on 26 september 2009:

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Tera mujhse hai pahle ka naata koi Aa Gale Lag Jaa-1973 All Songs covered in the blog
Har aas ashqbaar hai Kinaare Kinaare-1963 All Songs covered in the blog
Dekha naa jaaye socha naa jaaye Mr India-1961 All Songs covered in the blog
Kahaan chhod ke chalaa hai tu Anjaan-1956 All Songs covered in the blog
De bhi chuke ham dil nazraana dil kaa Jaal-1952 All Songs covered in the blog
Chali re chali meri naao chali re Jhoola-1941 05 of 11 songs covered

According to HFGK, the movie had 12 songs. I find that the song Ek chatur naar karkar singaar does not find mention if HFGK. To compensate for that, the song under discussion today gets mentionc twice (as song number 6 and 11). So the count of songs in the movie remains accurate, viz 12.

Today, as part of Blog ten year challenge, here is another song from “Jhoola”(1941). Like the song that was covered ten years ago, this song too is a duet sung by Ashok Kumar and Leela Chitnis. In the song ten years ago, the leading duo were riding a boat, here they ride a ghodagaadi, and while doing so, Ashok Kumar makes gentle 1940s style passes on Leela Chitnis, asking the love letter back. Leela Chitnis teases him back 1940s style responds 1940s style viz.

Dekho kah doongi
Haan haan dekho kah doongi
Tumhaare man ki batiyaan

and subsequently

Hamri gali mein dekho
Tum kal se aana chhodo
Varna hansengi hamaari sakhiyaan

The lyrics by Kavi Pradeep are quite cute and romantic. The romantic song, in which both make paasses at each other must have been quite a rage in those pre independence days.

Music is composed by Saraswati Devi.

Blog Day :

4089 Post No. : 15230

Today (28 september 2019) is the 90th birthday of Lata Mangeshkar (DoB 28 september 1929).

She started her playback career in 1940s and she went on to sing till early 2000s, viz for seven decades ! Mindboggling indeed.

She sang just under 5700 songs in Hindi movies according to our estimate. The blog has 3475 of her songs and so we are one of the rare places on internet where so many of her songs can be accessed at one place.

Another 2000 odd of her songs remain uncovered. it is a matter of time before her remaining songs (that are available) will also find representation in the blog.

On this occasion, here is a song from “Dard”(1981). “Dard”(1981) was produced by Shyam Sundar Shivdasani and directed by Ambreesh Sangal fo Murghan Enterprises, Bombay. This “social” movie had Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, Poonam Dhillon, Om Shivpuri, Krishn Dhawan, Pinchoo Kapoor, Shashi Kiran, Madhup Sharma, Kamaldeep, Harjeet, Poornima Jairam, Mazhar Khan (2), Master Raju etc wih special appearance by Ranjeeta.

The movie had seven songs in it. Four songs have already been covered in the past.

Here is the fifth song from “Dard”(1981) to appear in the song. This song is sung by Lata. Naqsh Llayalpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Khayyam.

The song is picturised as an expression of love song on Hema Malini and Rajesh Khanna. The song is not lip synced by Hema Malini rather it gets plays in the background.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

Song-Na jaane kya hua jo toone chhoo liya(Dard)(1981) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Naqsh Llayalpuri, MD-Khayyam

Lyrics(Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)

Na jaane kyaa huaa
Jo toone chhoo liyaa
Naa jaane kyaa huaa
Jo toone chhoo liyaa
Khilaa gulaab ki tarah
Meraa badan
Nikhar nikhar gayee
Sanwar sanwar gayee
Nikhar nikhar gayee

Banaa ke aainaa tujhe ae jaaneman
Na jaane kyaa huaa
Jo toone chhoo liyaa aa

Bikhraa hai kaajal fizaa mein
Bheegi bheegi hai shaamein
Boondon ki rimjhim se jaagi
Aag thhandi hawaa mein
Aajaa sanam
ye haseen aag ham
Len dil mein basaa
Naa jaane kyaa huaa
Jo toone chhoo liyaa
Khilaa gulaab ki tarah
Meraa badan
Na jaane kyaa huaa
Jo toone chhoo liyaa aa

Aanchal kahaan
main kahaan hoon
Ye mujhe hosh kyaa hai
Ye bekhudi toone di hai
Pyaar kaa ye nashaa hai
Sun le zaraa
saaz e dil gaa rahaa
Hai naghmaa teraa
Na jaane kyaa huaa
Jo toone chhoo liyaa
Khilaa gulaab ki tarah
Meraa badan
Na jaane kyaa huaa
Jo toone chhoo liyaa aa

Kaliyon ki ye sej mehke
Raat jaage milan ki
Kho jaayein dhadkan mein teri
Dhadkanen mere mann ki
Aa paas aa
teri har saans mein
Main jaaun samaa
Na jaane kyaa huaa
Jo toone chhoo liyaa
Khilaa gulaab ki tarah
Meraa badan
Nikhar nikhar gayee

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

#Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 87 # Jeewan Sangraam-1974 #
————————————————————–——————-

Every year we celebrate our Republic Day on 26th January and Independence Day on 15th August.
This year we celebrated our our 70th Republic Day on 26th January (26.01.2019)and 73rd Independence Day on 15th august 2019.

Hearts of Indians are naturally filled with pride and enthusiasm on such occasions. It is also natural that we are reminded of the many ‘patriotic songs’ on these occasions- they could be from Hindi movies or non-film songs.

This year our Atul ji posted a very nice song and an appropriate article on the occasion. I enjoyed this song and, in the process, also browsed the blog for the other songs which I do remember whenever we celebrate our Independence Day and Republic Day. These songs always bring back those memories when I was a school going boy.

We used to get ready very early in the morning and after the flag hoisting at school and ‘prabhat-pheri’ up to the ‘gram panchayat’ school we again used to attend the flag hoisting ceremony at our colony club ground where the general function would take place for all employees (of the state electricity board) and their families. The distribution of sweets after the program was also a big attraction for us children then.

This time on both the occasions i.e. on Independence Day and Republic Day I could not send a song or a post from my side for the blog. But then I was thinking that is it necessary that we post patriotic songs on these two occasions only?
There are many other special occasions too where we have birth anniversaries and Remembrance Day of the leaders who lead the ‘freedom struggle’ and laid their lives for the freedom, even though they followed different thought process and different line of action to reach their goals.

Yesterday 28th September 2019 was the birth anniversary of one of the most loved martyrs of our country Bhagat Singh. And we remember him on his anniversary and paid our tributes as possible in our own ways.

We do always remember our ‘freedom struggle’ and the ‘hard earned freedom very much and ‘WE’ value it every day.
And may be in the history of our ‘freedom struggle’ it is possible that not a single day was without the fight and sacrifice by our countrymen.

Similarly, our armed forces guarding our borders have to fight every day to secure our borders and foil any attempt against our country by those who want to disturb peace in our country.

And even though we are busy with our daily routine our heart is always with our armed forces who are securing our borders and delivering their duties in the most difficult conditions and delivering their best in the many adverse conditions be it weather or other created circumstantial difficulties time to time, and many times sacrificing their lives whenever it is required so.

I remember one song from Marathi movies ‘sainik ho tumchaysaathi’ which is very close to my feelings that I have mentioned above and also those which I am unable to express in words. This song is just perfect to express those feelings.

(This is from the Marathi movie ‘Paahu Kiti Re Vaat-1963’, of which the lyrics are written by G.D. Madgulkar and it was composed by Datta Davjekar. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle)
The lyrics are in Marathi and are given with the YT link above, so I am not reproducing them here. I am also not trying to translate it because I feel I will not be able to do that perfectly, except the last three lines;

“रक्षिता तुम्ही स्वातंत्र्या प्राणांस घेउनी हाती
तुम्च्यास्तव आमुची लक्ष्मी तुम्च्यास्तव शेतीभाती
एकट्या शिपायासाठी झुरतात अंतरे कोटि”

You protect our freedom exposing your lives to danger
Our prosperity is because of you
Our livelihood (farms and crops) are because of you
Billions of hearts yearns/flounders for every soldier

And, why I am mentioning this above is that many times, I and may be all of us have to go through these feelings and even helplessly we cannot we do anything except reading in the news and expressing our solidarity with our forces whenever there are attacks or commotion on our borders, or other domestic problems where to control the situations our forces are deployed, and while doing so they have to sacrifice their lives…

But our soldiers who are there protecting us are braver then we think, just see this ‘tweet’(which was on tweeter recently) by an army Officer after one of our Officer was captivated by our neighboring country after the attacks on our CRPF Jawans in February this year , and we all were praying for his safe return …

“Dear Friends, things happen. It’s a War… don’t feel disheartened. Indian Armed Forces are capable to take on any mission! Cheer Up… Chin Up… Keep the josh HIGH Just stand UNITED and behind your soldiers, their families and veteran. They will NEVER EVER disappoint YOU Jai Hind”

***

So the spirit of our armed forces and people is always there to protect our country and fight for the country even if it requires of sacrificing of our lives.

Our love and concern for our motherland is always there. We are proud of our history, culture, heritage, and the stories of bravery and valor that will continue to inspire the coming generations.
And, if we have a movie on such historical incidence it has to be here on the blog and that is the reason for this post today.

Many of us (I consider people of my age here) may be remembering to have read about ‘Koma Gata Maru’ in the textbooks of history while in schools. (I am not aware if all those incidences of history which I read in my school days are still included in the today’s school curriculum).

Well, here is a brief about ‘Koma Gata Maru’…

Koma Gata Maru or S.S. Koma Gata Maru a Japanese steamship was hired by Gurudit Singh or Baba Gurdit Singh who was a businessman in Hong Kong.
It sailed on 04.04.1914 from Hong Kong to Coal Harbor, Vancouver and anchored there on 23.05.1914.
What inspired Gurudit Singh can be mentioned in this idea that “The visions of men are widened by travel and contacts with citizens of a free country will infuse a spirit of independence and foster yearnings for freedom in the minds of the emasculated subjects of alien rule”

The ship was to carrying around 346 passengers to Canada who want to immigrate there. However, the strict Canadian immigration laws doesn’t allow them to embark there and the ship was sailed back to Calcutta.
Gurdit Singh was aware of the discriminatory Canadian laws for the south Asians, however India under British rule then and Indians being a British subject he challenged the Canadian laws. The ship was hulled in the sea for almost two months and later on forcefully sailed back to India (on 23.07.1914) except twenty peoples were allowed to enter Canada. This incident has gone down as a shameful incident in the history of Canada.

When the ship sailed back to India and docked at the Budge Budge dockyard at Calcutta the Britishers who by now were known of the revolutionary intent of the people in the ship mostly Sikhs attacked them with Bullets and many people were killed in this incident while the leaders were successful to escape and enter India.

In India, the ‘Koma Gata Maru’ memorial was set up near Budge Budge, Calcutta in 1952 which was inaugurated by our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
In 2014 government of India issued two special coins, INR 5 and INR 100, to mark the centenary of the Komagata Maru incident.

In Canada a monument in remembrance of the Komagata Maru incident was unveiled in July 23, 2012 near the steps of the seawall that lead up to the Vancouver Convention Centre West Building in Coal Harbour.
A stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of the arrival of Komagata Maru was released by Canada Post on May 1, 2014.

Today’s movie ‘Jeewan Sangram-1974’ was made on this subject.

And how I became aware of this movie and its song also has story behind it.

I always vaguely remembered to have watched a movie with my Uncle in my childhood days titled ‘Sangram’ having actor Shashi Kapoor.
The other thing I vaguely remember which always keep me haunting with this movie name was Shashi Kapoor tied in ropes and many people surrounding him and he is trying to pull the ropes and fighting with them.

Over the years this image could not erase from my memory. And from the movie name which I had in my mind I imagine that the hero is struggling for something or may be his life has become a ‘Sangram’.

As I grow, I keep searching for this movie for many years. After coming into contact with this blog and getting more familiar to internet and continued searching, I finally came to know that the movie is not ‘Sangram’ but it is ‘Jeewan Sangram’.

Then I started looking for this movie or its songs. There was not a single song from this movie which was popular or which I remember to have listened to anywhere. Even I think this movie may not have been a successful movie of its time.

Well, as few years passed, I found one song available on YouTube which was picturised on Manmohan (and I was planning for an article on him …). Then one day I find this today’s song and listened to its one part (that time I think only one part was available) and then forgotten again.

Finally, months back when I checked this song again and realized that this song is a song praising our ‘mother land’ and love for the country, or this was a ‘patriotic song’ to put it straight.

Now coming to the image that I had in my mind since my childhood. Well I watched this movie online and there is no such scene in this movie, where Shashi Kapoor is tied with ropes.

However, there is one scene in the end of the movie where Arjun Singh (Shashi Kapoor) himself come out and face bullets from all corners where the Police has already been waiting for him to surrender, but he embraces death to make people awake and thinking that his sacrifice will inspire people to fight the Britishers. (So, one can understand how deep impact this scene has on my impressionable mind then, and it kept haunting me all these years 🙂 )

**

As I watched this movie in parts and not at one go, I keep noting many things which I would like to share for information only.

The movie starts with the following offerings;

“The makers of this movie offer their homage to Baba Gurdit Singh whose courage and vision steered S.S. Koma Gata Maru back to Indian Shores.
Baba Sohan Singh Bhakna – Founder-President of the Ghadar Party (in California USA) – an undisputed leader of the early revolutionaries.
Kartar Singh Sarabha – Stormy petrel of the Indian Revolution. Fearless Fire-brand who was sentenced to death at the tender age of nineteen only.
And those thousands of others, who like the hero of our film, gave of their utmost to their motherland, but whom history has cruelly ignored…”

And that gives us an idea of the storyline of this movie.

The movie starts with 29th September 1914, Budge Budge dockyard Calcutta where the ship ‘S.S.Koma Gata Maru’ carrying Indians abroad reached from Canada, where entry to these peoples was denied.

After the titles we are introduced by the commentator …

“Door deshon se aaye huye ye wo kaumi parwaane hain, jo desh ke liye apna sab kuchh lutaakar Bharat ko aazaad karaane ke liye aaye
Duniya ki sabse badi sultanat ke khilaaf baghaawat ka jhanda lehraate huye, inn muthhi bhar janbaazon ne, jaise hi apne desh ki dharti par qadam rakhaa to inka swaagat … (goliyon se huaa)” …

The leader of these Baba Gurdit Singh Sandhu from Sarhali and other patriots were also involved in ‘Ghadar Party’ activities to fight with the British and make India free from Britishers.
Baba Gurdit Singh’s initial idea that “The visions of men are widened by travel and contacts with citizens of a free country will infuse a spirit of independence and foster yearnings for freedom in the minds of the emasculated subjects of alien rule” lead him to gather patriotic Indians from abroad whom he want to take to Canada, however entry to all of them was denied and they were sent back to Calcutta. Reaching Calcutta all these leaders and their associates were attacked by British resulting brutal killings of many and arrests of many, except Baba Gurdit Singh, Baba Nidhan Singh and Arjun Singh who fled away.
After this the main protagonist in the movie Arjun Singh (Shashi Kapoor) with Baba Nidhan Singh and Sachin Sanyal continue the cause of Ghadar Party and preparations for the mutiny in ‘British Indian Army’ which is planned for 21st Feb’1915.
However British Police lured one of the activists who becomes informer for them and the mutiny is advanced for 19th Feb.
Here I would stop myself from detailing of what happens next 😊 the movie is available online and those who are interested to watch it may watch it at least once. (I watched it full once and then repeat for many parts during the preparation of this article.)

The tagline in the posters of this movie mentioned it as ‘The flaming story of a people’s revolt against tyranny’

I also like the dialogues in this movie and why not after all they are written by Gulzar and Qamar Jalalabadi.

“Marna bhala hai uska, jo apne liye jiye,
Jeeta hai wo, jo mar chuka hai desh ke liye”

Arjun Singh (Shashi Kapoor) says this to Baba Nidhan Singh insisting him to allow to go to Calcutta to meet Sachin Sanyal instead of Baba Nidhan Singh going there and endangering his life.

The most interesting and introspecting dialogues are between Om Shivpuri and Shashi Kapoor.
As police gets the information and they start following Arjun Singh (Shashi Kapoor) from Calcutta in train and Arjun Singh after a scuffle and fight with them gets injured and jumped into a river and finally landing in the ‘khema’ where Om Shivpuri is the leader who has seen the 1857 revolution and how the infighting, treachery and back-stabbing among ourselves helped the British. He has lost all the hopes of people rising again to fight the British.

Ye ajeeb naashukaron ka desh hai beta
Ajeeb bujhdil hai yahaan ke log

Arjun Singh’s reply is;

Is desh ki haalat
In logon ki khudgarzi
Mujhse chhuppi nahin hai
Lekin ye khudgarzi, ye loot-khasot jab aakhri had ko pahunch jaati hai tabhi inquilaab ka waqt aata hai, aur aaj …aaj wo waqt aa gaya hai.

Seeing hope in Arjun Singh, Om Shivpuri extends support to Arjun Singh in the cause of ‘freedom’ …

Further story is how all these patriots fights the British till their end …

Let us now enjoy the today’s song sung by Narendra Chanchal and composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. Lyrics are by M.G. Hashmat.
As I have mentioned above earlier, I thought this song was only one part, but then I find second part and when checked through HFGK Vol-V (1971-80) it mentioned this song as a ‘three part’ song. I found audio for the first part with an extra stanza which, I think, was not included in the movie. I already had located videos of other two parts except the first part. Later on, I also found the video for the first part of this song. I am thankful to all the uploaders who have uploaded this movie and its songs on YouTube.

(This song appears in the movie at the following timings as given below)
00:00:39 to 00:03:16 (part-I)
00:05:44 to 00:06:17 (chorus, mukhda)

The ‘Koma Gata Maru’ incident in history took place on 29th September 1914 and today is 29th September 2019. One hundred and five years have passed to this incident.
But grateful nation always remembers its martyrs and all those known and unknown who have fought for the freedom of India.
Every small incident in our history of freedom struggle is a source of great inspiration for the coming generations, and all those stories of courage, valor and sacrifice needs to be passed on to them by every Indian in his lifetime.

Let us now listen to the today’s song in the special and unforgettable voice of Narendra Chanchal who has rendered it very soulfully …

With this today’s song “Jeewan Sangraam-1974” makes a debut on the blog!!

(Note- Thanks to our Sudhir ji who hold this post shared by me in March this year and advised me that we should present it on the anniversary of the ‘Koma Gata Maru’ incident i.e. on 29th September today).

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 47
——————————————————————————————

Today’s song is from the 1973 movie ‘Heeraa’ which made its debut on the blog on 10th Oct’2009.

Other movies represented on the blog on that day were as follows;
(Movies represented on the blog on 10.10.2009 (in descending order);

Kashtiyaan sab ki kinaare pe pahunch jaati hain,
Naakuda jinka nahin,

Those lines played in the background with the ‘logo’ of Sultan Productions the home production of Producer and director Sultan Ahmed.

That also reminds us of the other production houses’ logos and some of them which played some famous lines and that was also one of the thrilling experiences of watching movies in the seventies.

‘Heera’ or ‘Heeraa-1973’ was directed by Sultan Ahmed and it was his home production.

It had Sunil Dutt, Asha Parekh, Farida Jalal, Shatrughan Sinha, Helen, Kanhaiyyalal, Anwar Hussain, Nazir Hussain, Sulochana, Mukri, Randhir, Tabassum, Tuntun, Mumtaz Begam, B.B. Bhalla, Polsan, Renuka, Keshav Rana, Abhimanyu Sharma, Jankidas, Master Raju, Pahalwan, Habib, Mac Mohan, Maqbool, Bam Lahiri, Abhimanyu Sharma, Master Rajoo and many others.
Faryal, Asha Potdar, Shyam Kumar, Satyendra Kappu make a friendly appearance in this movie.
The movie also introduced a sheep ‘Kaptaan’.

Story of this movie was written by K.B. Pathak. Dialogues were written by Wajahat Mirza. Wajahat Mirza also shared the screenplay writing K.B. Pathak and Sultan Ahmed. Editing of this movie was done by M.S. Shinde.

Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Usha Khanna and Mukri gave their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 23.10.1973.

HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) listed six songs on the movie page for this movie, it was however corrected in the addenda that the first song in the list, is actually only few lines of the first song in the movie ‘ek chhokariya beech bajariya’ , and thus reducing the total number of songs of this movie to five.

This song ‘ek chhokariya beech bajariya’ was presented on the blog by our Respected Arun ji and he also had mentioned in brief about this movie and its story. (Wherein only one correction is required that the villain Balwant (Shatrughan Sinha) is not arrested b the police in the end of this movie, but he gets killed during the encounter with Heera (Sunil Dutt) and the Police).

I have vague memories of watching this movie either with my Father or my Uncle. And I must be around five or six years old then. After that I have never watched this movie again.

But I always have the nostalgia with me for the song ‘main tujhse milne aayi mandir jaane ke bahaane’ from this movie. I remember this song was very popular then and was frequently played on loud speakers. (however, none of the songs from this movie made it to the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of that year). Other than this song the nostalgia related with this movie that I always carried was ‘the daaku, the horses and the guns and the ‘khandahars’ 🙂

Other than the two songs mentioned above the other song which one can remember after listening to it is ‘Jai Ambe Jagdambe Maa Jai Ambe Jagdambe’ which was also heard, may be during ‘Durga Pooja’ festivals only.

And these three songs mentioned above are the three songs from this movie which have been posted in the blog so far.

One can find the today’s song also heard on radio in those days, but I think it was not much popular and forgotten easily thereafter. However this can remind us of the many this type of songs in other movies 😊

Music for this movie was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji, while two lyricists wrote the songs for this movie, Indeewar three songs and Anjaan two songs.

Today’s song is written by Anjaan and sung by Lata Mangeshkar. On screen it is performed by Asha Parekh.

Asha Parekh recently celebrated her 77th birth anniversary on this 2nd October. (She was born on 2nd October 1942). We belatedly wish her a very healthy and peaceful life ahead.

This song happens to be a song in the ‘villain’s den’ where Asha Parekh and her Father Kanhaiyyalal are hostages after Balwant (Shatrughan Sinha) has abducted them. And he forces Asha Devi (Asha Parekh) to dance in his den …

‘le baandh le ye ghunghroo… aur aisaa naach ke aaj saari sabhaa mein aag lag jaaye’

Naach …

And that is why this song …

Let us now enjoy this song sung by Lata Mangeshkar and composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

Song-Aaj naachoon aise ke aag lag jaaye (Heera)(1973) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anjaan, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

aaj naachoon aise ke aag lag jaaye
aaj naachoon aise ke aag lag jaaye
aag lage aisi ke bujhne naa paaye ae
bujhne naa paaye
aaj naachoon aise ke aag lag jaaye
aaj naachoon aise ke aag lag jaaye
aag lage aisi ke bujhne naa paaye ae
bujhne naa paaye

O deewaane tu sun
meri paayal ki dhun
iski jhankaar mein maut ka raag hai
ho koi sangedil
khaaq mein jaaye mil
aaj ghunghroo ke bolon mein wo aag hai
jaa re jaa aa
jaa re jaa
jaa re jaa aa
mujhe aise tu dekhen kyun
aankh jo milaaun to aag lag jaaye
aankh jo milaaun to aag lag jaaye ae
aag lage aisi ke bujhne naa paaye ae
bujhne naa paaye

kar naa ghaayal mujhe
rang degaa tujhe
har lahu ka jo katraa giregaa yahaan
zulm itnaa na kar
yoon naa hadd se guzar
tu agar hai zameen to koi aasmaan
jaa re jaa aa
jaa re jaa
jaa re jaa aa
dekho mujhko na chhoona yoon
haath naa lagaa tu
ke aag lag jaaye
haath naa lagaa tu
ke aag lag jaaye ae
aag lage aisi ke bujhne na paaye ae
bujhne na paaye …
