First of all, my apologies for my infrequent appearances here. Even calling it a cameo is unfair to a cameo, because, to be honest, it is not even that. It is more like, a “blink and you miss” situation.

Anyway, here I am today, back with a post. The occasion is the Remembrance Day of someone very special to the Hindi film industry, and also to me. He has millions of fans around the world and is easily one of the legends of the industry.

I am talking about Kishore Kumar, of course.

I’ve written about Kishore Kumar many times in the past. And yet, when Avinash ji requested me to write a post for this occasion, I immediately agreed. Such is my love for Kishore Kumar that even if I repeat myself and bore my readers in the process 🙂 , I could not bring myself to say no.  🙂

The problem then was to get the required writing mood back. What they say about writing is very true. If you don’t write for an extended period of time, you gradually lose the ability to do so. That is why many writers practise their writing everyday, by writing at least a minimum number of words.

When I wrote to Avinash ji saying “Mere thoughts gather nahin ho rahe. I have lost the ability to write”, he replied “Aap Kishore Kumar ke gaane suniye aur din bhar sunte rahiye. Thoughts will come, I am sure.” 🙂

So I did listen to a few songs – predictably songs of ‘my’ era. “Khizaan Ke Phool”, “Jeevan Se Bhari Teri Aankhen”, “Teri Duniya Se”, “Hum Bewafa Hargiz Na The”, “O Mere Dil Ke Chain”, “Ye Shaam Mastaani” and a few others.

I think that might have helped a bit, because here I am.

Anyway, coming to Kishore Kumar.

The years just roll by – it is already 32 years since he left us.

He was just 58 at the time – far too young to go.

But like they say, it is not the years in your life that count, it is the life in your years.

And Kishore Kumar had plenty of life in his years.

No one will dispute that Kishore Kumar was the No.1 all-rounder in the industry. There have been a few others who have had multiple skills. Manoj Kumar was actor, writer, director, producer. Mehmood was also quite an all-rounder.

But Kishore was in a league of his own, because in each of his roles, he left a mark. Of course he is best-known as a singer, but even today many remember his acting, especially in comedy roles like in ‘Dilli Ka Thug’, ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’, ‘Half Ticket’ and many other films.

But there was so much more to Kishore Kumar than just comedy. And probably to prove this point, he produced and directed films like ‘Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein’ (1964) and ‘Door Ka Raahi’ (1971). I was stunned when I saw both these films – they have tremendous depth and philosophy, uncommon for the times.

His versatility was not limited to singing, acting, producing and directing though. Kishore Kumar also composed music, for some of his films.  Like the two films mentioned above, whose songs are quite popular to this day. As are the songs of  ‘Jhumroo’ (1961).

This is why I call Kishore Kumar the Gary Sobers of the Hindi film industry. 🙂 He could take on any role, and make a success of it.

But beyond even his multifarious talents, there was Kishore the person. And even as a person, he is quite an inspiration for me. His attitude towards life is something I can only admire.

Those who worked with Kishore Kumar, especially Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, vouch  for his ability to enliven a recording session with his sense of humour, his cracking a joke or pulling someone’s leg. Some people are like this – never a dull moment with them around.

It is not as if Kishore didn’t have low moments, or tough times. Everyone has these – Kishore was no exception. But he never let this affect his professionalism. He was very clear about himself, his philosophy towards life – and he never allowed others to define it for him.

Like he said “Duniya samajhti hai main paagal hoon….main samajhta hoon duniya paagal hai”.

I think, whatever his conflicts with the world might have been, especially later in his life, he was at peace with himself. And that is most important for a human being. Like he told Lata Mangeshkar in an interview in the fag end of his career “I am quite happy”. He expressed a desire to run away from it all, and go to a place which was calling out to him.

Today, on his Remembrance Day, I feel Kishore Kumar found that place and left us in order to go there.

And left us with SUCH a treasure of songs and memories that we are indebted to him for life.

So thank you, thank you, thank you, Kishore Kumar for what you have given us. Speaking purely for myself, as someone who has been part of my life from my very early years, when I listened repeatedly to songs like “Mere Sapnon Ki Raani” and “Ye Shaam Mastaani” on the radio, your impact on my life cannot be described.

Now onto the song for today.

It is a totally new song for me. In fact I have never even heard of the film. Details, including lyrics of the song, have been sent to me by Avinash ji.

This is what he says :

“Zindagi Jeene Ke Liye-1984’ was directed by K.S. Sethumadhavan for ‘Tirupati Chitra Mandir, Bombay’. It was produced by Hastimal.

It had Rakhi Gulzar, Suresh Oberoi, Vijay Arora, Manmohan Krishan, CS Dubey, Krishan Dhawan, Shobhha Khote, Birbal Raj, Raj Kishore, Rakesh Roshan, Tina Munim, Master Rinku, Shah Chaturvedi, Raghvaiyya, Santosh Kumar, Lata Kashmiri, Dolphin and others. Deepa and Ramu make a guest appearance in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 06.06.1984. However, the movie was re-certified by Censor on 15.12.1987 with a UA certificate (as mentioned in HFGK).

The movie has total seven songs, including the three-part song being presented today (as per HFGK Vol-VI 1981-1985) composed by Rajesh Roshan. HFGK mentions Rajesh Roshan as the lyricist for this movie and the same is mentioned on the vinyl cover of this movie available on online sources, which I guess is correct. (myswar.co also mentions the same). Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Pankaj Udhas and Yesudas had given their voices to the songs in this movie.”

This film, ‘Zindagi Jeene Ke Liye’ (1984), makes its debut entry on this blog today.

The song itself is amazing. I’d never heard it before, but when I heard it for the first time a few days ago, it touched my heart. It also suits this occasion, as it talks of a person who feels he is ready to move on.

Please do listen to this wonderful song. Quite a gem, it is, especially in Kishore Kumar’s voice. Thanks for the song, Avinash ji.

Here is that date again.

The 25th of October is a date that many Hindi film lovers, and lovers of shaayari, remember with some pain. For it was on the 25th of October 1980 that one of the tallest figures of the industry, and certainly of the world of poetry, bade farewell to us.

Sahir Ludhianvi.

I’m usually careful with my choice of adjectives, especially when using them in the superlative. But in the case of Sahir, I don’t have the slightest hesitation in saying “one of the tallest”. For he comfortably satisfies this criterion.

There have been more famous figures in the industry.

And there have certainly been more popular and liked figures in the industry. If anything, Sahir, with his uncompromising nature, and and ego and mood to match, wasn’t the easiest person to get along with.

And yet, when it comes to stature, that too in his particular field, Sahir was truly a giant.
Without belittling any of the others who also produced outstanding work in the form of lyrics, Sahir always seemed to be in a league of his own.

They say that an actor is not real – after all, it is his job to act. He is only putting on a show. Which is one reason Kishore Kumar preferred singing to acting. He felt a singer can put his heart and soul into a song, whereas an actor’s job is to pretend.

A lyricist goes a step further than even a singer.

While a singer can put his heart and soul into a song, he does not create it. He only renders it.

The text comes from the lyricist.

And therefore the lyricist has the best chance of putting his heart and soul into his creation. He talks to his audience through his lines. He can use his poetry as an outlet for his thoughts, his feelings, his joys and his frustrations.

And I feel no one did this better than Sahir.

With Sahir, what you saw was what you got.

Sahir was pretty much an open book in terms of his preferences, his likes and dislikes. Nothing duplicitous or fake about him. He had strong views on certain topics, and he had absolutely no qualms about expressing them.

He even got into trouble early in his life with the Government of Pakistan for this reason – and fled Lahore (and thus, Pakistan) to come to India in 1949.

Imagine if this had not happened. Imagine what might have been lost to us.

Whatever issues Indians might have with the Government of Pakistan, I thank the Pakistan Government, on behalf of all Indians, for creating an “enabling” environment for Sahir to move to India. 🙂

And Sahir never looked back.

From “thandi hawayen” (Naujawan-1951), the song that got him noticed, to “pal do pal ka saath hamaara” (The Burning Train-1980), one of the last films for which he wrote lyrics, Sahir was one of the most highly regarded lyricists of his time.

I remember saying this before. When Sahir passed away, I only knew his name as a lyricist. In those days, still a teenager, I had limited knowledge of song details. I’d know the song, and the singer. Yes, some chance I’d know the composer, but unless I’d listened carefully to the lyricist’s name while listening to it on radio, not much chance I’d know the lyricist. In those days, to be honest, I enjoyed songs without knowing whether it was a Majrooh or Sahir or Shailendra or Hasrat Jaipuri song.

With this limited knowledge, I read the obituary on Sahir in the Illustrated Weekly of India in 1980. It was a fairly long obituary, and naturally many of his songs were mentioned.

That was when it hit me.

Oh, “aage bhi jaane na tu” was Sahir’s?

And “ye raat ye chaandni phir kahaan”?

Oh, and “udey jab jab zulfen teri” also?

And “abhi na jao chhod kar”?

And “zindagi bhar nahin bhoolegi wo barsaat ki raat?”

And “tu Hindu banega na Musalmaan banega”?

Oh, and “jeevan ke safar mein raahi” also?

And “tadbeer se bigdi hui taqdeer bana le”?

There were many more – and each one was a song I knew, a classic. Yet, such was my pathetic knowledge at the time of who the lyricist was, that I never realized these were all Sahir.

At that time, if you’d asked me to mention a few Sahir songs, I’d have come up with Pyaasa and Kabhie Kabhie songs. These I always knew as Sahir songs. But I am ashamed now to think of how ignorant I otherwise was.

It was only at that moment I realized what a legend Sahir had been. And what the world had lost.

After that, I paid a lot more attention to the lyricist, while listening to songs.

And often it was Sahir.

Much later in life, I read that it was only on Sahir’s insistence that All India Radio itself started mentioning the name of the lyricist also, in its radio programmes.

It was not only the name of the lyricist, but also the lyrics themselves, that I started paying attention to.

And that is when I realized that Sahir’s lyrics were different.

They were deep, they conveyed an emotion that came from the heart – and often a strong emotion at that. They were not the “baith ja, baith gayi, khadi ho ja, khadi ho gayi” types.

If today lyrics are a very big, in fact the biggest, part of my love for a song, it is entirely due to Sahir. I listen to lyrics carefully today – no appreciation of a song is complete for me, without appreciating the lyrics.

Whether Sahir was writing romantic poetry (“abhi na jao chhod kar”) or mocking the government for its failures (“cheen-o-Arab hamaara”), whether he was lamenting the state of society (“jinhe naaz hai Hind par wo kahaan hain”), or trying to uplift those seemingly with no hope (“wo subah kabhi to aayegi”), whether he was exhorting the oppressed to fight for their rights (“ponchh kar ashq” , “na munh chhupa ke jiyo”), or showing a mirror to society about its treatment of women (“aurat ne janam diya mardon ko”), whether he was trying to promote communal harmony (“tu Hindu banega na Musalmaan banega”), or talking about the futility of war (“khuda-e-bartar”), every single time Sahir’s lyrics tugged at your heart strings.

Not just because the poetry was beautiful and the lyrics powerful (which they absolutely were), but because you could feel that every word was written with heart and soul. No wonder it went straight from Sahir’s heart to our hearts.

You could feel Sahir’s anguish and despair when he says “ye duniya agar mil bhi jaaye to kya hai”. Or his cynicism when he says “aasmaan pe hai khuda aur zameen pe hum, aajkal wo is taraf dekhta hai kam”.

At the same time, you could feel the romance in the air, with “tum agar saath dene ka waada karo” and “parbaton ke pedon par”. Just listen to poetry like “thehre thehre paani mein, geet sarsaraate hain….bheege bheege jhonkon mein, khushbuon ka deraa hai”. Waah!
And “abhi na jao chhod kar”, one of my alltime favourites, and surely one of the most perfect songs ever in every respect.

Sahir’s poetry for the hurt felt by the jilted lover was no less powerful. “Jaane wo kaise log the jinke pyaar ko pyaar milaa”. Or lines like “laut rahi hain meri sadaayen, deewaaron se sar takra ke….haath pakad kar chalne waale, ho gaye rukhsat haath chhuda ke (sad version of in hawaon mein)”. And of course, “chalo ek baar phir se ajnabi ban jaayen hum dono” with lines like “wo afsaana jisey anjaam tak laana na ho mumkin, usey ek khoobsoorat mod dekar chhodna achha”.

Then you have the Barsaat Ki Raat qawwalis. Roshan’s masterpiece “na to karwaan ki talaash hai” merging into “ye ishq ishq hai ishq ishq” is one of the greatest ever compositions in Hindi cinema, with Sahir’s contribution in lyrics being no less significant. With lines like “jo dawaa ke naam pe zeher do, us chaaraagar ki talaash hai”.

I can go on and on. Dharamputra, Taj Mahal, Aaj Aur Kal, Mujhe Jeene Do, Chitralekha, Kaajal, Waqt, Neel Kamal, Humraaz, Bahu Begum, Aadmi Aur Insaan. Each one with memorable lyrics. One of my favourites is “poochhe koi ki dard-e-wafaa kaun de gaya, raaton ko jaagne ki sazaa kaun de gaya…kehne se ho malaal, to hum kya jawaab dein….duniya kare sawaal, to hum kya jawaab dein”.

Although Sahir was less productive in the 70s, he still came up with poetry that reminded us of Sahir of yore. The 70s was a decade where poetry began steadily losing ground to more “chaalu” lyrics. Urdu also began losing ground in the process.

This was a development that Sahir could not prevent, but did leave him disillusioned. His “main pal do pal ka shaayar hoon” very correctly represents his then state of mind. He continued to write though, but mostly for the Chopra family’s films, for films like Karm, Trishul, Insaaf Ka Tarazu, Kaala Patthar and The Burning Train.

Since Sahir started as a poet, and moved into film song lyrics, the sense of poetry comes across strongly in his lyrics. Much like with Kaifi Azmi.

So much for Sahir’s poetry. No one can do justice to it in one article. I’ve barely scraped the surface.

But what really makes me put Sahir on a different pedestal altogether is not the QUALITY of his poetry, but the CONTENT of his poetry.

Clearly Sahir was a rebel, a non-conformist.

And his poetry often reflected this, since he wrote straight from the heart.

But importantly, he never shied away from expressing his views. He never tried to be politically correct. He showed society a mirror, whether society liked it or not. For example, his line “kaho ji tum kya kya khareedoge, yahaan to har cheez bikti hai” is a much underrated, but powerful, line, in my opinion.

Yes, he railed and ranted – whether it made a difference or not. “Samaj ko badal daalo” he wrote.

Today, 39 years after his death, we are still languishing with most of the ills that existed in Sahir’s time, and which he spoke against.

It is a sad commentary of our times that many of his laments feel just as relevant today as they felt then. Yes, “aurat ne janam diya mardon ko, mardon ne usey bazaar diya” and “tu Hindu banega na Musalmaan banega, insaan ki aulad hai insaan banega” are just as relevant in 2019, as they were in 1958-59.

If Sahir were alive today, he’d probably be writing just as strongly today as he wrote then. The issues haven’t gone, sadly only Sahir has.

That’s a sobering thought.

Now, let’s move on to the song for today.

It’s from the 1969 film, Paisa Ya Pyaar.

As has now become customary :-), the lyrics for this song have been sent to me by Avinashji.

I remember seeing this film as a young boy, but I don’t remember the story now. It was a remake of a Tamil film Panama Paasama, starring Gemini Ganesan and Saroja Devi, which was a pretty big hit at the time. In fact, the name Panama Paasama, translates in Hindi to Paisa Ya Pyaar.

I remember the song “Ber lo, ber lo” was a lift from the very popular “yelantha pazham yelantha pazham” song of Panama Paasama. 🙂

But today’s song is different. It is a typical Sahir song – Insaan ne paise ke liye.

Here, Sahir’s lament is about how money destroys relationships. He talks about how people lose everything, even their own self-respect, for money. He concludes by saying that love is the biggest wealth there is.

The song is sung by Hemant Kumar, music composed by Ravi.

I’d like to end by saying that Sahir was wrong in one respect.

He wrote

“kal koi mujh ko yaad kare

Sahir saab, I can only say you grossly underestimated our love and respect for you.

Today 5th November is the eighth remembrance anniversary of Bhupen Hazarika (8 September 1926 – 5 November 2011). I am not adding any adjectives before his name because they will not do justice to describe the ‘personality’ he was, the monumental work he has done, the legacy he has left behind, and finally the ‘human for humanity’ he was.

I have always wanted to write an article on him since I came in to the contact with the blog. And that was only about how I get introduced to the ‘World of Bhupen Hazarika’ through his album ‘Main Aur Mera Saaya’ (2/1993) and his songs like from the movies that I know ‘Rudaali’ (1993) and others, and the famous non-film song “O Ganga Behti Ho Kyon. . .”.

I still remember the day 14th May 1993 (I was staying at Kota-Rajasthan then) when I bought ‘Main Aur Mera Saaya’ on HMV Cassette and me and one of my colleagues from Bengal listened to it. First time I just listened and was curious to know from my friend about the information on Bhupen Hazarika that he was aware of. Thereafter that evening I keep listening to the cassette changing sides till I went to sleep. That was the magic of the voice of Bhupen Hazarika and also the lyrics of the songs describing the various ‘common individuals in the society – the poor, the downtrodden, the suppressed ones’ and specially depicting the culture of Assam.

Around the same time, I think (June-July of 1993) the songs of ‘Rudaali’ were released and had became popular so the cassette of ‘Rudaali’ too became a part of my collection. Before that the Dadasaheb Phalke award for 1992 was announced; it was conferred on Shri. Bhupen Hazarika for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema and music. After that I think his album with the song “O Ganga Behti Ho Kyon. . .”, couple of songs from ‘Darmiyaan’ (1997) and other non-film songs was released which I bought during my stay at Bareilly.

I was also always remembering the title song from the TV serial ‘Lohit Kinaare’, I think it had the voice of Bhupen Da (if I am not wrong) , but in spite of my continuous search for it I have not been able to find it till date. In between over the years I was only aware of his Assamese and Bengali version of his song “Aawaara Hoon. . .”, which is “Moi Eti Jajabor” in Assamese and “Ami Ek Jajabor” in Bengali. And of course of the Assamese and Bengali versions of the song “O Ganga Behti Ho Kyon. . .” i.e. “Bistirno Parore Ahankh Janore” and “Bistirno Duparer Ashankha Manusher’ respectively.

All these years all of his collection that I was having was always motivating me whenever I listened to the songs and I always cherished this valuable collection with me. After that almost a year back during my regular browsing I got to read about his personal life, his journey from his early years that made Dangor Moina, a child from Sadia, into a towering personality – Bhupen Hazarika. And I realized that one has to read more and more, or if possible, one has to literally live the life of Bhupen Hazarika to understand Bhupen Hazarika in its true ‘human’ spirit. And that surely requires a very detailed post separately.

On his birth anniversary this year (8th September, 2019) when Atul ji presented a post with his song “Ek Kali Do Pattiyaan” and mentioned about the original Assamese version of that song, I immediately checked for it and listen. And I was very excited and happy to enjoy it in Assamese language.

Just a couple of weeks later, there was a discussion on the song on ‘Brahmaputra’ in the ‘Atulites-whatsapp’ group where Atul ji mentioned about the folk singer Kalpana Patowary, so just one day I searched for her songs and came across a link of her performance in the TV musical program ‘Junoon’ where after her performance one of the judges Ila Arun asks her to sing the song of Bhupen Hazarika i.e. “Manuhe Manuhar Babe. . .”. So I looked for this song. When I listened to it first time I was lost in that song and from that day there is not a single day when I have not listened to this and other songs of Bhupen Hazarika in Assamese and Bengali whether I understand it or not.

But, as Bhupen Da himself mentioned in one of his interviews , what MF Hussain had said about him that “. . . when he sings – he paints.”. Here, I would like to add that not only we get to see the picture in front of us, but when he sings, we get involved in those feelings and emotions of those characters that Bhupen Da is singing about, and we unknowingly step into the soul of those characters.

Well, Atul ji’s post and the discussion on the group prompted me to look for the original Assamese and Bengali versions for his songs from the album ‘Main Aur Mera Saaya’. I keep finding them and also found some of them which are given in the table below for those who are interested to listen them. Rather I would request all to please listen to them to understand the ‘nuances’ (as Gulzar saab has said in his commentary in the album ‘Main Aur Mera Saaya’) of the characters.

I would request our knowledgeable readers to correct me wherever I had made a mistake and also please provide either the Bangla or Assamese version for the Hindi songs that I have been unable to find in the above list. Also, I would apologize if I have made any mistake in the text while mentioning the songs title in either Assamese or Bengali elsewhere in this post.

Now, coming back to “Manuhe Manuhar Babe”, I found one video link wherein Bhupen Da himself is performing on this song and the details mentioned that this song was composed by him in 1964. And there, just this thought crossed my mind to check if there is a Hindi version of this song since it was the oldest song of Bhupen Da so I thought this should have been naturally translated in Hindi long back and this song both in Assamese and Bengali “Manush Manusher Jonno” (that Atul ji mentioned in his post ), are very popular one. But I could not gather the exact translated words for this song in Hindi if at all the song was made. But finally, I got it when I was listening to the various links available for the song “Insaanon Ne Paise Ke Liye” for Sahir Saab’s Remembrance Day.

So, when I was browsing for the song “Insaanon Ne Paise Ke Liye”, I noticed a link in the suggestions having Bhupen Da’s song “Insaan Insaan Ke Liye” and as I listened to it I had got the song I was looking for. And not just that it was already in the movie which was a Hindi version of ‘Chameli Memsaab’, I also got to listen another one “O Bideshi Bandhu”. What a song that is too. . . as we keep listening they keep growing more and more. . . and more. . .

And nowadays, there is not a single day when I do not listen to Bhupen Da’s song in Assamese or Bengali (even though I do not understand the words fully. But I must say they are very sweet, melodious and healing too). For example, I have listened innumerable times to “Akhom Dekhor Bagisare Sowali” in the voice of Usha Mangeshkar. And then its Bangla version “Asom Desher Meye Aami”. However, it seems that this song was not translated and included in the Hindi version of this movie.

Then there are few songs like “Shahid Pronaamo Tomak” which I like very much. And one song that Bhupen Da has mentioned in the interview (that I referred to above)  “Agnijugor. . .  Nuton Akhom Gadhi, Nutan Bharat Gadhi” which I need to listen, but so far have not found the link for it.

Now I also wish to learn Assamese and Bangla. And as many peoples say very rightly that we should always try and learn the Indian languages other than our mother tongue too. And that is the magic of our rich cultural heritage and of our ‘Unity in Diversity’. Even Bhupen Da an ambassador of ‘humanity’ also plays his role in the process of ‘national integration’ when he talks about that in the above interview.

And that bring us to the song of today, which has been taken from the Hindi moive ‘Chameli Memsaab’ (1979). Bhupen Da won the national award for the ‘Best Music Director’ for the Assamese movie ‘Chameli Memsaab’ at the 23rd National Awards – 1975.

‘Chameli Memsaab’ (Hindi) was directed by Ajit Lahiri for Elem Films, Calcutta. It has Abha Dhuliya, Tom Alter, Freddy Stroud, John McKenzie, Mrs. Freddy Stroud, Carol Alter, Pallavi Mehta, Master Raju, Sushant Sanyal, Mithoon Chakravarty and others. HFGK does not mention about the date of passing of this movie by the Censor Board.

This movie has four songs including one multiple version song. Lyrics for the songs are written by Gajanan Sharma (three songs) and Deep Narayan Mitholiya (one song). Music is composed by Bhupen Hazarika. Bhupen Hazarika, Kamal Ganguly, Arundhati Holme Choudhary and Ila Basu gave their voices to the songs in this movie.

Today’s song is sung by Bhupen Hazarika and Kamal Ganguly and the lyrics are by Deep Narayan Mitholiya (I think singer Kamal Ganguly and lyricist Deep Narayan Mitholiya will be making a debut on this blog).

Let us now enjoy today’s song and welcome ‘Chameli Memsaab’ (1979) on the blog. Let us also remember the great human being Shri Bhupen Hazarika. And remember that we still have a long way to go to explore the writer, composer and singer Bhupen Hazarika.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 49

Welcome all to this post under this series where I am presenting yet another song from the Seventies. The last post presented in this series was also presented by me that too was a song from the year 1973.

The song under discussion is also from a movie of 1973.

Ever since Atul ji started this series it has become my routine to regularly check for movies which are eligible to be discussed in the series in the forthcoming month. I try to find movies that triggers long dormant memories of those days, associated either with the movies or their songs.

I may not necessarily have watched all those movies. In some cases it is only the songs from these movies, frequently being played on the radio or loudspeakers may have left lasting memories in my mind.

The movie for today’s song is a case inn point. I have not watched this movie till now, but I remember its song ‘tere naam ka deewaana, tere dar ko dhoondhtaa hai’ which was arguably the most popular of all the songs of this movie, as it was frequently played on the radio then. I did not like this song those days. Nevertheless this was the song and not any other songs that I associate with its movie.

After many years I listened to ‘honi to hoke rahegi anhoni naa hoye’ and liked it very much.

One more song from this movie which was popular and was played on radio and loudspeakers is the song being presented today. It was only after I browsed the list for the pending songs from this movie that I get to know that this song was from this movie ‘Suraj Aur Chandaa’.

I was surprised when I find that this song has not been posted on the blog till now.

As mentioned above I had not watched this movie or its songs till now. It was during the preparation of this post that I watched the video of this song for the first time.

Despite their popularity, none of these songs made it to the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of that year.

‘Sooraj Aur Chandaa-1973’ or ‘Suraj Aur Chandaa’ was directed by T. Madhava Rao for ‘Suraj Films, Madras’. (It was a costume drama movie as mentioned in HFGK Vol V). It was produced by A.V. Subramaniam. It had Sanjeev Kumar, Meeta (new discovery), Sujeet Kumar, Jagdeep, Lakshmi Chhaya, Shyama, Jairaj, Sajjan, Krishna Kant, Mukri, Ram Mohan, Herucles, Lalita Kumari, Sujata, Mona, Kamal, Bhimraj, Arun Kumar, Prem Kumar, Ravindra and others. Banda makes a special appearance in this movie.

Story of this movie was written by B. Vittalacharya, and dialogues were written by Raj Baldev Raj. Editing of this movie was done by G.G. Krishna Rao.

The movie was passed by Censor Board on 22.05.1973.

This movie had total six songs penned by Anand Bakshi and composed to music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Three out of the six songs have been posted on the blog earlier.

Today’s song is the fourth songsfrom this movie to appear on the blog. The song is picturized on Bindu and Sanjeev Kumar where Bindu is lip syncing in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice. Also, there are snakes around in the picturisation of this song.

I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the movie and its songs.

Editor’s note:-This song was quite a well known and hummable song of 1970s. It was a song which one heard without necessaily being aware of its details.

From the lyrics, one would guess that a lady is singing about her beloved who has come from far off.

When one watches the picturisation, all such assumptions get thrown out of the window. What one watches in the picturisation is something mind blowing, inadvertently so.

The song is a “naagin” song, in which a “naagin” is singing this love song to her beloved. “Naagin” is played by Bindu and Sanjeev Kumar is her beloved.

“Naagin”(1954) provided the template of all “Naagin” movies, but this movie “Suraj Aur Chanda” (1973) takes that template to a different plane altogether.

In all other “Naagin” movies, a snake charmer (Sapera) plays the been and the female snake (invariably ichhaadhaari naagin) would turn into a human female and would then perform a dance.In this song, it is different. Here it is the snakes who play the “been” (yes seriously, just watch the picturisation). The snakes do not just play the been, they play the whole orchestra including instruments like Dholak, Tabla, Sitar etc as well. 🙂 And the lead snake Bindu performs the dance.

Snakes playing the music ! It is something unprecedented in the annals of Hindi movies ! I am not aware of any such instance in any other movie.

What an idea ! In my younger days, I would laugh at such a picturisation, but now, I can only be amused at the weirdly imaginative brain of the person behind the picturisation of this song.

This song deserves special recognition, especially for its picturisation.

We in this blog hereby make this song the century song of the blog.

THIS song is the 15300th song post in the blog. This song, marking the 153th century post of the blog is a “special” song in its own way. Picturisation of this song can keep people amused for hours ! 🙂

It appears that Laxmikant Pyarelal had specialised in being music directors of “Naagin” movies of that era. They would compose music for such well known “Naagin” movies like “Nageena”(1986)and “Nigaahen”(1989)” as well. These movies had Sridevi as the ichchaadhaari naagin. Remember ‘balma tum balma ho mere khaali naam ke’ 🙂 ?

So, with this amusingly picturised song, the blog completes another century. An agonisingly slow century that took 72 days. Very much in line with the slowing economy. 🙂

But on a different note, as many as 35 movies made their debut and three movies got YIPPEED during this period.

As we can see from above details none of the movies represented on the blog on 20.11.2009 have achieved Yippeeee’ed status so far.

I am today presenting a song from from the movie ‘Badalte Rishtey-1978’, which, as is my wont is from the seventies.

I have vague recollections of watching this movie with my parents and brothers. I must be around eleven years then. I must have liked the movie and its songs. That is why I never forgot its ‘title song’ and couple of ohter songs. When I started collecting cassettes for my music library in 1985-86, I was on the look out for the songs of this movie. Later on, I got them into my collection.

In cassette it came in combination with the songs of ‘Doosra Aadmi-1977’ when I bought it in 1997.

The songs I like most from ‘Badalte Rishtey’ includes the title song and the song ‘meri saanson ko jo …’
Another song that I liked a lot is the song being represented today.

I remember this song very well but I had forgotten that this song had Rishi Kapoor performing it on the screen. I was under the impression that it was Jeetendra. It was only when I watched the video of this song during the preparation of this post that I realized that the song was lip synced by Rishi Kapoor, while Jeetendra and Reena Roy are also present in the picturisation of this song.

I remember this movie being well appreciated and it was a good ‘entertainer’.

“Badaltey Rishtey-1978” was directed by R. Jhalani for ‘Vijayshree Pictures, Bombay’. Sudesh Kumar was the producer of this movie while it was presented by Gobindram Ahuja.

It had Jeetendra, Rishi Kapoor, Reena Roy, Asrani, A.K. Hangal, Pinchu Kapoor, Shubha Khote, Urmila Bhatt, Dina Pathak, Master Raju, Onkar, Madan Joshi, Pardesi, Raja Duggal, Makhan Singh, Chander Dhani, Mrs.Kaushal, Kheura, many others and the members of the ‘Himachal Skiing Club, Simla’.

The movie introduced Shashi Bala Saxena and Rachna Bhatt. Its dialogues were written by Madan Joshi. Editing of this movie was done by B. Prasad. Diljit Singh Bugge was the Chief Assistant Director of this movie.

Story of this movie was written by Mahendra Sarai and screenplay was written by Phani Majumdar.

This movie had total five songs in it. Lyrics for all the five songs were penned by Anjaan and music was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

Anuradha Paudwal, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mahendra Kapoor, Mohd Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Today’s song is the fourth song from this movie to appear on the blog.

Though the title song of this movie was quite popular, other songs too were quite nice, hummable and popular. However, only the title from this movie make it to the annual Binaca Geetmala list of the year 1979, and it ranked on number four that year.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 03.11.1978.

Let us now enjoy this beautiful song in Rafi Saab’s voice, and Rishi Kapoor (at his best in such situations 🙂 ) lipsyncing in an accusing tone for his lost love and pretending to sacrifice his love to save many from destroying their lives. 🙂

He befriends Jeetendra specifically so that he could sow seeds of ‘nafrat’ in Reena Roy’s mind about him who otherwise was not able to forgot her past life when she was in love with Rishi Kapoor.
Lots of twists and turns, but we only come to know about him when Asrani discloses his reality towards the end of the movie.

Welcome all to this post which comes after a long gap. I call it a ‘Long gap’ because this post was conceived by me ‘long back’ like many other posts of mine which remained unfinished aften getting started due to various reasons.

My last post on the blog was on 20th November. It was posted when I going through some health-related issues. I had to visit a Hospital in Nairobi, which is around 125 kms from my base station. Since some tests were to be conducted, I had to stay in Nairobi for four days. I stayed with colleagues working there in the Head Office. That didn’t allow me to concentrate on posts though I continued listening to music and watching songs. I even kept reminding our authors about movies that were falling under the ‘blog-ten-year challenge’.

The visit to the Hospital and Doctor made me recall many Hindi movies that had stories woven around ‘medical profession or serious medical complications’ (or diseases, if it is the right word?).

This time I had to specially visit ‘Dil Ka Doctor’. Its English translation ‘cardiologist’ has entirely different connotations from the Hindi word. This offers me material for a separate post provided I came across a suitable song to go with that proposed article.

T was another Doctor in India (in ‘Atulites WhatsApp’ group) who was already aware about my ‘dil ka haal’, and was already providing me guidance on the symptoms so that ‘I can bounce back’ without thinking that ‘beemaari ho to aisi ho jiska naam kisi Viceroy se kam naa lage’:)😊

The tests were conducted and results were awaited after two days (due to weekend holidays), I had realized that the problem was not serious and everything was going to be ok. The worries were mainly ‘Beemari ka shaq’like Doctor Kulkarni’s ‘Main usi shaq ka ilaaj karta hoon’, and hence the ‘tests’:)

Finally, the results were ‘declared’ and everything was well in order except a minor ‘Blood Pressure’ on the higher side. I thanked both the Doctors!!!

The movie of today’s song has a storyline around ‘Doctors’ or medical profession. But today’s post has nothng to do with that. This covers an an entirely different story behind it.

People of different generations have different taste for music and naturally everybody’s musical nostalgia keeps growing according to the surroundings they grow in and/or even the circumstances they live in (I think so).

Music lovers have their musical nostalgia, which depends on factors like the generation/ backgrounds/ circumstances in which they grow up. This musical nostaligia gets triggered up whenever they are reminded of those days.

Sometimes, people of different generations/ background/ circumstances pass on their brand of musical nostalgia to another (viz younger generation) music lovers. This results in the curious situation when music lovers in their teenns or twenties start loving vintage era music created during the times of his forefathers.

People coming in contact with me are slowly coming to know about my love for Hindi songs and Hindi movies. Some of them who become close friends have also come to know about our blog and my activities for the blog.

Assuming that you are considered a music lover, sometimes people approach you with their music related query. A query , that can stump even music “experts” is when we are asked to tell the details of a song whose details are known only partially or vaguely.

Most of the times I am able to provide the details or answer mkost of the time, but sometimes the challenge is quite tough.

For instance, take the example of a song which someone has heard but he remembers very few details of the song. And hewants you to find that song for him, without providing the usual details about mukhda of the song, or its tune, the artists, or the movie. Only thing he can tell is that this song is picturised on a ‘lady wearing white-blue saree and singing with some ladies sitting around a sea-beach or kisi nadi ke kinaare?

With such sketchy details, you are asked to find the song, because you claim to be a music expert songs and movies? You are also challenged and mocked that if you cannot find this song then
you should not talk about songs of movies 🙂 , chhod do gaane sun’na aur filmon ki baatein karna 😊 .

Anybody in my place would feel like my honour is at stake, and would definitely give this challenge a serious try, so I did …

It happened on one such week-end get together on Saturday evening here in the camp (where we are staying in Kenya). We regularly have such get togethers. If the get together is big and the occasion so demands, then listening to songs and even dancing becomes customary. This calls for a separate detailed post in future. 😊

It was in one such get together that our friend a QC guy, fifteen years younger to me challenged me when we were enjoying listening to songs. This guy wanted me to find a song for him. He must have watched this song on TV somewhere. What he remembered of it was that it is sung by a lady in ‘blue-white saree’ with ‘some ladies sitting around a ‘river bank’ or ‘sea-beach’ (he was not sure).

This guy who was born in early 1980s had one favourite Hindi song.

Guess which?

‘Do ghoont mujhe bhi pilaa de o saaki dekh phir hota hai kya’

He had listened to this song somewhere while he was with his friend on a long drive and since then this song was the most liked Hindi song for him. He is from Andhra so he is not aware of that much of Hindi songs, except few like the above. And, whenever there is a party, he would ask us to play this song so that he can enjoy it 🙂

We are aware that this song is from the movie ‘Jheel Ke Us Paar’ and the year of the movie is 1973 🙂 (and surprisingly this song has not been posted yet on the blog 🙂 )

Now given the challenge, I had to find him this song lip synced by a lady with a blue or white saree, so I was looking for hints. 🙂

The first song that readily came to my mind was the title song from ‘Jheel Ke Us Paar’ and the second thing I made up in my mind was that the song he was looking for must be a ‘haunting song’ or somewhat sad song like ‘naa koi umang hai’ so I started searching on YouTube by entering terms like ‘woman singing a song near sea-beach, river’, woman in white saree singing a song, heroine singing along river bank, sea-beach etc etc

I was sure that the song this guy was looking for must be a ‘haunting song’ (and not his fault though) because I know ‘gham ke chhod ke manaao rang raili’ was not in a white saree, then I thought white saree means should be a widow singing a song or like that.

After browsing couple of songs like ‘naina barse’ I turned to the songs of ‘Mera Saaya’ and ‘Anita’. Now, searching in YouTube has an advantage of suggestions appearing according to your search. (And over the years I have also learnt entering ‘out of the box’ search terms to find a song, it had successfully worked many times 🙂 )

And there with the songs of Anita in the suggestions I found this song …

Can you guess this song my friend was looking for was ‘sun ri pawan, pawan purvaiyya’…

My friend bowed to me, but I told him my friend it is not a white saree song but a blue saree with white border song !!

But I must admit that while my friend was correct in mentioning the scenario. It was I who interpreted it wrong and I was searching with wrong terms and still landed on the right song …

Also, he never mentioned that the song he was looking for is where the heroine is making a ‘baalu ka ghar’ (sand home 🙂 or is it a ‘mud-home’?) on the sea-beach.

Incidentally both the songs that my friend likes are the songs where the heroine is blind.

And finally, the song we were looking for was a ‘happy song’ instead of a ghost song or haunting song which I presumed it should be.

For today’s post I am presenting a song which I think fits with the theme which I imagined was the theme for song my friend was looking for. 🙂

This song is from the 1980 movie ‘Bandish’, and it is performed on screen by Hema Malini where she is trying to ‘trap’ Rajesh Khanna by posing as a ‘bhatakti aatma’.

I remember to have watched this movie in our colony club during regular weekly screening may be in 1982-1983, I think.

‘Bandish-1980’ was directed by K. Bappaiah for ‘Suresh Productions, Madras’. It was produced by D. Rama Naidu. It had Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, Danny, Om Prakash, Asrani, Jeevan, Om Shivpuri, Madan Puri, Mohan Choti, Pinchoo Kapoor, Jagdish Raj, Maruti, Yousuff, Ranveer, Umesh Khanna, Prem Kumar, Dharmesh, Vijay Kumar, Shashiraj, Ganesh Nagpal, Raj Baldev Raj, Vijay Kumar, Kiron, Bedi, Pradeep Jain, Bindiya Goswami, Nalini Jaywant, Manorama, Preeti Ganguly and Tanuja, Padmini Kapila, Vakkalanka Padma, Ashoo, Munni.

Story of this movie was written by V.C. Kuganathan. K.A. Marthand was the Chief Editor of this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 07.10.1980.

The movie had five songs composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Lyrics of all the songs were written by Anand Bakshi.

So far only one song from this movie – ‘Rang bhare mausam se rang churaa ke’ has been posted on the blog and that was on 04.08.2011.

Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Incidentally there was only one Lata song – solo song – in this movie and this song is the one being presented here today.

(#Music Composer-Singer-Bappi Lahiri#1)

Welcome all, to this post which is another of those posts of mine that was planned way back (in February 2019, to be precise)when I presented a song from the 1977 movie ‘Paapi’.

Music for this movie ‘Paapi-1977’ was composed by Bappi Lahiri. Though I had not watched this movie ‘Paapi-1977’, I liked the song that I then presented. Today’s song, also by Bappi Lahiri, came up in the list of suggestions that appeared in ‘YouTube’ with that song.

One comments on YT on this song caught my attention. The comment was about the use of ‘flute & base guitar’ in the today’s song. When I listened to the song I was awestruck. I do not remember to have listened to this song any time before. And also, may be the movie it was from, wasn’t a successful movie this song may have been forgotten easily.

So, it was then that I decided to take up this song for presentation, and was looking for the right occasion. Later on, I decided to send it for posting on 27th November the birth day of composer, singer Bappi Lahiri (sources mentioned him as a dancer, disco musician, and actor and record producer too).

Bappi Lahiri was born on 27th November’1952 in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal to Aparesh Lahiri and Bansari Lahiri who themselves were accomplished Bengali singers and musicians. Both his parents also came from Jalpaiguri.

On 27th November’2019 Bappi Lahiri celebrated his sixty-seventh birthday!!!

Today we belatedly wishing him a ‘very happy birthday and a healthy and peaceful musical life ahead’.

He made his debut as a singer in a Bengali movie ‘Daadu’ in 1972 and if we considered this first assignment of him in Bangla movie ‘Daadu’ which came to him in 1969 (as told to Anupama Chopra in an interview), this year in 2019 he has completed fifty years in his film-music journey. He has many records on his name and also have been conferred by many many awards till now. And he is still going on – rocking.

The first Hindi movie he composed music was ‘Nanhaa Shikaari’ which came to him in 1971 and this movie was released in 1973.

I was never a big Bappi Lahiri fan, but I was actively considering writing about Bappi Lahiri compositions. The reason behind this was that here in our camp, we were listening to many of his songs (both as a composer and singer) during our regular parties and I realised that these songs were liked by many and they all have good music, particularly the ‘beats’ which people danced and enjoyed a lot. These were mainly the songs from his ‘disco era’.

One of my bosses particularly loved ‘Jeele le jeele le aayo aayo jeele le’ every time ‘bhaai ye gaana zaroor bajaana’. On one or two occasions when he was asking us to play some ‘English’ or ‘Kenyan’ music I brought him back to the songs of ‘Armaan’, ‘Waardaat’, ‘Disco Dancer’ or played other Bappi Lahiri songs.

‘Bambai se aaya mare dost’ from ‘Aap Ki Khaatir-1977’ was perhaps the song that first introduced me with the music of Bappi Lahiri. This song was very popular then and was played frequently on radio and loud speakers or in orchestras.

Subsequently I got introduced to songs from ‘Pyaara Dushman-1980’, ‘Armaan-1981’, ‘Waardaat-1981’, ‘Namak Halaal-1982’ etc.
I liked the songs from ‘Armaan’, ‘Waardaat’, though I had not watched these movies until now.

I also liked the songs of ‘Disco Dancer-1982’ very much, and I specially remember them because they were played by my friends during the summer vacation of 1983 after our 10th board exams were over.

Bappi Lahiri had composed some nice songs in his pre-‘disco era’ that I was not aware of. Subsequently I have discovered a few such songs and I have shared afew of them on the blog.

For example, songs like ‘Ye naina ye kaajal’ from ‘Dil Se Mile Dil-1978’, ‘Sainyya bina ghar soona’ from ‘Aangan Ki Kali-1979’ etc. were shared by me long back.

After ‘Disco Dancer’ it was ‘Himmatwaala-1983’ which I watched with my younger brothers & cousins in the summer vacations (1983) and I liked few of its songs if not all.

Then there were movies where Bappi Lahiri composed songs for the movies from ‘South’ banners where Jeetendra was the main hero. From these movies I remember, ‘Jaani Dost-1983’, ‘Haisiyat-1984’, ‘Tohfaa-1984’ and of course I like all songs from ‘Sharaabi-1984’.
I also liked some of the songs from ‘Naukar Biwi Ka-1983’ which I watched during my stay at Akola (1983-1985).

I didn’t like the songs from ‘Mawaali-1983’. I liked one or two songs from ‘Justice Chaudhary-1983’. I did not watch these movies.

During 1983-85 when I was studying in 11th-12th standard disco music was ruling the charts in India. But I was more inclined to the golden era of HFM then and Rajesh Khanna movies, so I lost the track of many Bappi Lahiri songs and may be even not liking some of them.

However, I like one or two songs from some of the Rajesh Khanna movies where Bappi Lahiri composed the music for them and which were released from 1984-1984 onwards.
In between during this decade i.e. 1981-1990 and onwards 1990 there are movies where I like some of the songs from the movies where Bappi Lahiri had composed the music for. But I am not listing them here all (and maybe I will be taking them in my posts in future on Bappi Da 😊).

So, for this post when I decided to present this song from the 1980 movie ‘Saboot’ I just thought to a look on the movies released in the decade of 1971-1980 and of which the music was composed by Bappi Lahiri.

During the preparation of this list I came across many movies of this period when Bappi Da had created some musical gems, that failed to get popular as the movies failed at the box office. The song under discussion is a case in example. I also realized that I liked many of his songs but I may not have given that much attention to the songs composed by him before the ‘disco era’ or even after ‘1985-1986’.

Like, when I came a across the movie name ‘Ek Ladki Badnaam Si’ which was not released, and looked for its songs, I found that already one of its songs has been posted in a detailed post on Bappi Lahiri by Sudhir ji here.

So, instead of going into the other details I will come back to the list of movies where Bappi Lahiri has given music in the decade 1971-1980 starting in 1973 with ‘Nanhaa Shikaari’. Incidentally this movie was introduced on the blog by ‘yours junior’ 🙂 only.

‘Saboot-1980’ was directed Tulsi Ramsay and Shyam Ramsay for ‘The Bharat Pictures, Madras’

It was presented by Abbasi Brothers. It was produced by Raaj Baweja and G.H. Navani.

It had Navin Nischol, Vidya Sinha, Kaajal Kiran, Om Shivpuri and Prem Chopra.

Vinod Mehra makes a friendly appearance in this movie.

While the other cast includes Padma Khanna, Rajendranath, Paintal, Narendranath, Mohan Sherry, Sudhir Dalvi, Amar Mrudulla, Roopesh Kumar, Gauri Varma, Maruti, Mohan Choti, Trilok Kapoor, Rajkishore, Raj Mehra, Darshan, Rajan Kapoor, Sunder Tinea, Moolchand, Sheikh, Jugnu, Birbal, Albela, Azad.

Story of this movie was written by J.K. Ahuja, and Omar Khayyam Saharanpuri wrote the dialogues. Screenplay was written by Kumar Ramsay.

Bal Korde was the editor of this movie and Shyam Ramsay was his co-editor.

This movie had total five songs (including one multiple version song) written by Amit Khanna. Music was composed by Bappi Lahiri.

Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Amit Kumar, Bappi Lahiri gave their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 29.02.1980 with restricted viewing certificate.

With today’s song ‘Saboot-1980’ makes its debut on the blog.

There is one more song in this movie ‘Jeena bhi koi jeena hai, jab tak tera saath nahin’ which sounds familiar to me and I listened to it and liked it too. This song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar and is multiple version song.

Let us now enjoy the today’s song where in Kaajal Kiran is lip syncing to Lata Mangeshkar’s voice. The song is picturised on Kaajal Kiran and Navin Nischol who seems to be a little hesitant first to the invitation from Kaajal Kiran, but surrenders in the end of the song.
Kajal Kiran or Sunita Kulkarni (her real name) which I became aware only recently celebrated her sixty-first birth anniversary on 18th October (born on 18.10.1958).
She became famous with her debut in ‘Ham Kisise Kam Nahin-1977’. And after that went on to act in many movies but none of them got the level of ‘Ham Kisise Kam Nahin’. And very few of them were successful to an extent. She retired from the movie scene in around end eighties.

Tulsi Ramsay and Shyam Ramsay the famous of the seven Ramsay brothers jointly directed this movie. F.U. Ramsay the famous Producer was their father.
Kumar Ramsay, Keshu Ramsay, Arjun Ramsay, Gangu Ramsay and Kiran Ramsay are the other five brothers among the seven Ramsay brothers.
They mainly produced and directed ‘Horror’ movies starting with ‘Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche-1972’.

Tulsi Ramsay (born on 29th July’1944) passed away last year on 13th December 2018. He directed many movies and also Producer, Production Designer and Writer.
Shyam Ramsay (born on 17.05.1952) who passed away recently on 18th September 2019 was also director of many movies other than that he was also Producer, editor and writer for many movies.
I think both of them also jointly directed many movies or many movies had the director name as ‘Ramsay Brothers’. I am not mentioning more about the films they produced or directed, because that will require another detailed post.

Coming back to today’s song, the lyrics are by Amit Khanna and music is composed by Bappi Lahiri. This lovely song is in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar…

“Happy New Year 2020” to all associated with this blog!!!

Welcome all to this post of mine which again is appearing after a gap of almost one month. I would like to describe it as ‘after long gap’ because some of the posts that I already sent missed the ‘bus’ and some which I had already planned to send got delayed because of my journey ‘back to India’ and ‘health issues’ which deprived me from “use of Gadgets’ for few days.
May be this ‘No-mobile, TV, Laptop, two-wheeler treatment’ will continue for some more days but I think that will be under some ‘relaxation’.

Today I am presenting herewith a song from the movie ‘Pyaar Ki Pyaas-1961’. It is a ‘birthday song’ and the reason for this ‘special song’ is the celebration of birthday of our beloved ‘Atulites’ – Peevesie’s Mom ji and Pradeep Raghunathan ji.

I take this opportunity to wish both* of them ‘a very very Happy Birthday’ today and a ‘healthy, peaceful and full-musical life’ ahead. 😊 (*and our supporters who also have their birthday today)

Also, I thought this was the right occasion to resume the pending posts and start my ‘new year’ on the blog.

For this post initially I started looking for a ‘party’ song or ‘get together song’ which was also having ‘dosti, yaari, saalgirah, jashn’ etc in it. I had almost finalized two songs from 1985 and one from 1980 and was still listening to one of them when I came across this ‘simple-cute-lovely’ song which I like very much and I think this is the perfect song for today’s occasion. It is a birthday song where children (I guess from the Orphanage) are celebrating birthday of Honey Irani who has been adopted by Nishi and Shrikant.

The song is a ‘children song’, and I think, it doesn’t matter how much we grow by age in our life we never forget our ‘childhood years’ and the ‘celebration of our birthdays’ in those years.

The growing age, in fact, gives us an opportunity to enrich our life with ‘knowledge, experience, and wisdom’ each year and learning and exploring many new things and celebrate life.
And that does not prevent us of a ‘child-like’ celebration and enjoyment on our birthday.

So, let us enjoy the today’s song …

‘Pyaar Ki Pyaas-1961’ was directed by Mahesh Kaul for ‘Anupam Chitra, Bombay’. It was produced by Pt. Mukhram Sharma and Mahesh Kaul.

N.C. Sippy was the Executive Producer of this movie.

The star cast of this movie includes Honey Irani, Nishi, Shrikant, Manmohan Krishna, David, Manorama, Yashodhara Kathju, Lal Bahadur, Gopi Krishna, Kamal Mehra, Indira Bansal, Kathana, Hayat, Taneja and Dulari.

Story of this movie was written by Pt. Mukhram Sharma Editing was done by R.V. Shrikhande.

HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970) listed Nine songs from this movie which includes one song in two parts. (Few lines from the today’s song is also repeated at the end of the movie which has not been counted as separate part).

The lyrics of all the songs for this movie were written by Bharat Vyas and music was composed by Vasant Desai.

So far, four songs from this movie have been posted on the blog. Today’s song is the fifth song from this movie to appear on the blog.

It is sung by Children and HFGK mentioned this song as ‘in children’s voice’ and the names of the artists have not been mentioned thereof.

Lyrics are by Bharat Vyas and music is composed by Vasant Desai.

(I have not watched this movie so can’t say much about it and its’ songs. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the movie and its songs.).

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-20) – Song No. 52

Welcome all to this first post under the ‘Blog 10-Year Challenge’ in this year “2020”, where we will be going back to the movies represented on the blog in the year “2010”.

Today we begin our journey in this year with a not-so-popular but yet a nice hummable song from the movie ‘Aashiq Hoon Bahaaron Ka-1977’. I had planned the post in the month of December’2019 itself when I had browsed for the movies represented in the month of January’2010.

However, I had not selected the song for the post then. The song that readily came to my mind was the ‘title song’ of this movie and since it had not been posted I thought I would present this one. But when I listened to the other song remaining from this movie, I like it and presenting the same today, since it also talks of a ‘journey’ and a ‘continuing journey’ without reaching the ‘destination’.😊

We, on the blog, have already entered in the thirteenth ‘calendar year’ for the blog since its inception in 2008, and we have still a long way to go and many new ‘topics’ to be explored and this song perfectly sets the tune for another entertaining musical year ahead …

I think that, other than the title song of this movie and the song ‘I am in love’, the other songs were not very much popular, though I find the today’s song a nice hummable and an enjoying one. (also, I do not remember to have listened to the today’s song earlier before taking it for the presentation in this post).

Today (7 january 2020) is the 63rd birthday of Reena Roy (DoB 7 january 1957). She made her debut in Hindi movies with B R Ishara who cast her in “Zaroorat”(1972) in a “bold” role. She was considered suitable for songs that are these days considered item songs. “Jaise Ko Taisa”(1973) may not be remembered today, but someone like me associate this movie with the song “able saawan mein jee dare rimjhim tan pe paani gire”. This song was picturised on Reena Roy and Jeetendra.

Reena Roy formed a hit pair with Shatrughan Sinha beginning with “Kallicharan”(1976) followed by “Vishwanath”(1978)- 16 movies in all. She also formed a hit pair with Sunil Dutt. She figured in “Naagin”(1976), “Jaani Dushman”(1979) etc with Sunil Dutt.

Reena Roy’s pairing with Jeetendra in typical Madrasi family dramas led to some memorable tear jerkers viz. Apnapan(1977), Badalte Rishtey(1978), Asha(1980), Pyaasa Saawan(1982), Arpan(1983) etc (22 movies in all). She won Filmfare award for best supporting actress for her role in “Apnapan”(1977).

Reena Roy also got to work with Rajesh Khanna, after he was no longer a superstar. They worked together in four movies. One such movie was “Dhanwan”(1983). Here Reena Roy plays the widow of Rakesh Roshan- another of her “strong” roles that she was known for in 1980s.

On this occasion, here is a song from “Dhanwaan”(1981). This song is sung by Lata. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

The song is picturised as a stage dance song where Rajesh Khanna has bought the entire show and he is the only one in the hall watching the performance. The same situation would later arise with Jaya Prada and Amitabh Bachchan is another movie, viz “Sharaabi”(1984). 🙂

“26th January”(1956) was produced and directed by Ramesh Sahgal for Sahgal Productions, Bombay. This movie had Nalini Jaiwant, Ajeet, Johny Walker, Sapru, B M Vyas, Leela Mishra, Cuckoo, Balraj Mehta, Chaman Puri, Nishi etc, with guest appearances by Gajanan Jageerdar, Jagdeesh Sethi, Randheer, Gyaani and Patanjali.

The movie had seven songs in it. One song is covered in the past.

Today (12 january 2020) is the 102nd birth anniversary of C Ramchandra. On this occasion, here is a song from “26th january” (1956). This song is sung by Manna Dey, Asha Bhonsle and chorus.

Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by C Ramchandra.

Only the audio of the song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturization of this song.

Welcome all to today’s post where I am presenting a song from the 1993 movie ‘Gardish’. I like this song very much. I had shared this song long time back but it was yet to be to be posted on the blog. This song is penned by Javed Akhtar.

Today 17th January 2020 is the 75th birth anniversary of Writer, Poet and Lyricist Javed Akhtar who was born on 17th January 1945 at Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh).

We on the blog wish him a ‘very happy birthday today and a healthy and peaceful life ahead’…

Javed Akhtar who started his film career as a ‘screen play’ writer with Salim Khan, came from a family of Poets. His father Jan Nisar Akhtar was an Urdu poet and lyricist while his grand father and his great grand father’s elder brother were also a poet.

The pair of Salim-Javed has given Hindi movies many successful and milestone movies working together including hits like ‘Andaz-1971’, ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’, ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat’, ‘Deewaar’,’Sholay-1975’ etc. I am not going to list them all here in this post for today, and maybe we will have a separate post on this in the future.

After separating from Salim Khan (in 1981-1982), Javed Akhtar continued writing for movies as an independent screen writer and has been a part of many successful movies like ‘Betaab-1983’, ‘Mashaal-1983’, ‘Saagar-1985’, ‘Arjun-1985’, ‘Meri Jung-1985’, ‘Dacait-1987’, ‘Main Aazaad Hoon-1989’ etc.

After writing for movies he moved on to writing lyrics for the movies. He began his journey as a lyricist with the movie ‘Silsila-1981’ and till the latest movie to be released next week i.e. ‘Panga-2020’ he has penned lyrics for more than one hundred movies (if the information available in the domain is correct ‘Panga-2020’ will be his 111th movie as a ‘Lyricist’). As a lyricist he has given us many many memorable songs and many songs which have a high ‘poetic’ value.

His lyrics for the movies ‘Saaz-1996’, ‘Border-1997’, ‘Godmother-1998’, ‘Refugee-2000’, and ‘Lagaan-2001’ fetched him the ‘Best Lyricist’ award at the National Awards of that year.

He has also won many ‘filmfare’ awards for his ‘screen writing’ and ‘lyrics writing’ which I am not listing them all here. And instead will come back on the movie details for the today’s song.

‘Gardish-1993’ was presented by ‘Good Knight Films’. It was produced by R. Mohan and directed by Priyadarshan.

Priyadarshan also wrote the ‘screen play’ of this movie.

The movie had Jackie Shroff, Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal, Shammi Kapoor, Kunika, Asrani, Dimple Kapadia, Raj Babbar, Rakesh Bedi, Tej Sapru, Anand Mahadevan, Suresh Oberoi, Annu Kapoor and Shagufta Ali. This movie introduced Aiswarya (from South) and Mukesh Rishi.

Story of this movie was written by A.K. Lohitadas. Its dialogues were written by Suraj Sanim.
Viswanathan Vaduthala, Mohan Payyanoor, Vijay. K. Bhavan, Sonu Sisupal were assistants in direction. Also, there were II- & III-unit directors – R.R. Shinde and Murali Nagavally respectively.

Editing of this movie was done by N. Goplakrishnan. Santosh Sivan was the Director of Cinematography of this movie.
Choreography of this movie was done by Sundaram, Prabu Deva and Suchitra.

Back ground music was scored by S.P. Venkatesh.

Lyrics were penned by Javed Akhtar and music was composed by R.D. Burman. The movie had six songs.
Asha Bhonsle, M.G. Sreekumar and S.P. Balasubramaniam had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 19th August 1993 and it was a remake of Malayalam movie ‘Kireedam’. It’s remake was also made in Telugu, Kannada before the Hindi version and later in Bengali and Tamil.

I had watched this movie twice then – once at Kota (I was staying at Kota then) and once at Indore during my ‘in-transit’ halt their while travelling from Kota to Parli-Vaijnath.

I liked this movie very much then as it had some powerful performances especially by Jackie Shroff, Amrish Puri, Dimple Kapadia and Mukesh Rishi and others too. I would also mentioned the role played by Annu Kapoor wherein he is playing an educated unemployed who accidentally become a ‘beggar’ for survival, but capitalizing on it he went on to employ many educated unemployed into his ‘business’(empire of ‘bhikharis’😊, and he also ‘innovatively’ deputes each of them according to their ‘relevant qualification’ for placement of ‘begging’ at a particular ‘location/field’.

It’s a ‘cynical comedy’ type role and Annu Kapoor has given his very best in this role.

For those who have not watched this movie I would sum-up the storyline in the following –
– The tagline on the posters of the movie – ‘Wanted to be a man of law, now wanted by the law’ i.e. the protagonist in the movie – the hero- Jackie Shroff.
– Amrish Puri, who plays the father to Jackie Shroff in this movie, is a Havaldar in Police and always dreaming of his song becoming a Police Inspector (the movie starts with this scene in Police Station …)
– However, life takes a turn for the hero who was an aspiring Police Officer who took on ‘criminals’ to save his Father first, then his Sister and finally ending up killing the goon … Shiva (Jackie Shroff) is arrested by Police for the offence…
– The movie ends with Amrish Puri submitting a police verification report for his son’s Police Job to his senior Suresh Oberoi mentioning that as per the police verification report Shiva (Jackie Shroff) cannot become a police officer since he is a ‘criminal’ now …

(The film won two Filmfare Awards—Best Art Direction (Sabu Cyril) and Best Action (Thyagarajan), and was nominated for Best Actor (Shroff), Best Supporting Actor (Amrish Puri), and Best Supporting Actress(Dimple Kapadia, as per information available on ‘wiki’.)

The songs of this movie composed by R.D. Burman were nice and I like them. ‘Rang Rangeeli Raat’ by Asha Bhonsle and the words (in some foreign language, I think) reminds the song ‘dil ki manzil kuchh aisi hai manzil’ from ‘Tere Ghar Ke Saamne-1963’.

The other songs were also good. And the one that I am presenting today was my favorite song from this movie. The song keeps growing on as we listen to it more and more.

I had then (in 1993) got this one song recorded six times on one side of the cassette. I am sure, our readers will also like this song. The song has some beautiful meaningful verses penned by Javed Akhtar.

This song is sung by S.P. Balasubramaniam and composed by R.D. Burman.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 3

Under the ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ today’s movie is ‘Kalaakaar-1983’.

This movie is completing full cycle of ten years today on the blog with only one of its songs posted on the blog so far. The song already posted on the blog i.e. ‘neele neele ambar par chaand jab aaye’ was the most popular song from this movie.

In 1983, I was studying in 11th standard. I remember the above-mentioned song particularly as that song could be heard wherever you passed by (specifically the Kishore Kumar version), either on radio or tape-recorders in shops/hotels. I didn’t like it too much then and it was very irritating to have it playing around every time.

I was under the impression that this song topped the charts then, but when I checked the ‘Binaca Geetmala annual list’ during the preparation of this post, I was surprised to note that this song didn’t appear in the 1983 list where ‘shaayad meri shaadi ka khayaal’ from ‘Souten’ was the topper. This may be because the movie ‘Kalaakaar’ must have been released at the end of that year 1983.

However, the above song appeared in the 1984 ‘Binaca Geetmala annual list’ and ranked at number 22 as per information available online.

Coming back to today’s post, I am presenting another good song from this movie which I think was also somewhat popular song. One more song from the movie that I remember ‘Khoye khoye rahe teri chaahon mein’ was a nice song too.

Incidentally there are three movies with same title viz ‘Kalaakaar’ – whic were released in 1942, 1954 & 1983 – that are represented on the blog so far. Each of these three movies are one s represented by just one song each in the blog.

‘Kalaakaar-1983’ was directed by P. Sambasivarao. It was produced by P. Anand Rao under ‘Anandalakshmi Art Movies’ banner. It had Kunal Goswami, Sreedevi, Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Rakesh Bedi, Krishan Dhawan, Madhu Malini, Agha, Vijayalakshmi, Rajkishore, Dhanalakshmi, Swaraj Kumar, Kiran, and Paintal in Special appearance.

L.V. Prasad makes a special guest appearance in this movie. Bappi Lahiri and Indeevar make a friendly appearance in this movie.
Mehmood and Kanwal Jeet Singh make a Guest appearance in this movie.

Story of this movie was written by Kovai Thambi and its dialogues were written by Inder Raj Anand. Editing was done by M.G. Balurao.

K. Ganesh was the chief assistant director, and Kuku Kapoor was the dialogue director.

Lyrics of this movie were written by Indeevar, with Manoj Kumar writing one song which was the climax song in the movie.

Music was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

The movie had total eight songs (including one multiple version song-already posted on the blog). Kishore Kumar, Suresh Wadkar, Anuradha Paudwal and Sadhna Sargam had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 09.11.1983.

Today’s song is the second song from this movie to appear on the blog.

The picturization of the song happens to be in music studio while recording for a song where Kunal Goswami is lip syncing in Suresh Wadkar’s voice with a female artist (I am unable to identify her though she seems to be a familiar face) lip syncing in Anuradha Paudwal’s voice. Sridevi is also seen in the picturization of the song with other artists present in the recording studio shown in this song.

I have not watched this movie so I cannot say much about it. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the movie and its songs.

Today I am presenting a beautiful song from the movie ‘Arpan-1983’. The song is sung by Anwar and as I have mentioned in my post on Anwar I like this song very much.

‘Arpan-1983’ was one of the best musical scores of Laxmikant-Pyarelal. I like all songs of this movie and I remember it were very popular then. Though the top three songs in that year’s (1983) annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ were from ‘Souten-1983’ – 01 song and ‘Nikaah-1983’-02 songs respectively at no.1,2 & 3.

However, some of the best music for that year came from Laxmikant-Pyarelal, while Bappi Lahiri and R.D. Burman also gave some of their best musical scores in the same year.

They composed music for as many as twelve movies released in 1983 and the songs from ‘Hero-1983’ released at the end of 1983 ruled the charts in next year i.e. in 1984 and its song ‘tu mera jaanu hai’ ranked at no.1 of the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’ list of 1984.

1982-83 was my ‘10th standard – educational year’ so I was not supposed to watch many movies in that year. But I remember after appearing the Board exams and exams of my younger brothers we get to watch many movies thereafter. In between, cricket was going on as usual and there was ‘World Cup 1983 win’ too 😊

But this movie ‘Arpan-1983’ still remains to be watched for me and as such I cannot say much about it, though I loved its songs very much. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the movie and its songs …

Memories that are pure gold – the mention of his name brings to mind a limited set of memories. Ah but these memories are pure gold.

Remembering Vijay Anand today, on his birth anniversary. He would have been 86 today.

Without any doubts, the best and the most remarkable sense of visualization of music. Not just thinking of films with Navketan – ‘Nau Do Gyaarah’ (1957), ‘Kaala Bazaar’ (1960), ‘Tere Ghar Ke Saamne’ (1963), ‘Guide’ (1965), ‘Jewel Thief’ (1967), ‘Johnny Mera Naam’ (1970) and more, his films outside of Navketan are also as memorable for their songs. ‘Teesri Manzil’ (1966) being the most popular and loved film for its songs, and their presentation. Of course, no one counters the wholesome effect of “O Haseena Zulfon Waali”. But then, see “O Mere Sona Re Sona Re Sona Re”. The superb performances in this song by both Shammi Kapoor and Asha Parekh are the handiwork of a most capable director, who knows how to bring out the maximum impact of everything that goes into presenting a song – the ambience, the words, the music, the facial expressions, the body language, crafting the merger of actions with music, the give and take between the two protagonists – everything brought together to convey this latent feeling in the heart, bringing it to the lips, and then expressing it with an un-tethered exuberance on the part of the lady, and a coy displeasure (to start with) on part of the gentleman. The end result – as Atul ji has often pointed out – after three stanzas, all is well and the lovers are seen walking hand in hand.

Take ‘Black Mail’ (1973) and the wonderfully soft rendition of a surreal presence of the loved one – felt through the written word, the voice of lover echoing through the letters, and the presence is so real that the lady wakes up with a start having felt the reality of a kiss on her forehead. Yes, the song is “Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas, Tum Rehti Ho”. I am never tired of replaying this song, the video I mean. Just the song itself is great, but its presentation on screen has enhanced its beauty and impact many folds.

Vijay Anand has also appeared in a handful of films. In some of the films that he directed himself, and he is not in the list of actors, one can catch a glimpse of him in very brief cameo appearances. However, he has appeared in bigger roles, and also as a hero. The first film in which he made his debut in a meaty role is ‘Joru Ka Bhai’ from 1955, a comedy film in which the lead pair was Balraj Sahni and Sheela Ramani.

His next major appearance is as the hero of the 1957 film ‘Agra Road’, a cops and robbers type of story. Next we see him on screen along with his two elder brothers, Chetan and Dev, in the 1960 film ‘Kala Bazaar’ which he also directed. In this film he plays the role of the ex-boyfriend of Waheeda Rehman, who has gone for higher studies to France, and returns with his amorous loyalties shifted elsewhere.

After a gap of four years, he is seen once again in a supporting role in ‘Haqeeqat’ (1964), a film that had a large ensemble of main line stars. The next gap is much longer – 7 years. And he makes his screen appearance once again in the 1971 film ‘Tere Mere Sapne’, a film that he has directed himself. His role in this film as Dr. Jagannath Kothari, a famous gynecologist (in film), is very impressive and effective.

The next film is ‘Chhupa Rustom’ in 1973. Dev and himself, are police agents who go undercover to capture a gang of smugglers. Once again, this film is directed by him. His role, masquerading as a shady, brash, small time, two-timing con man brings out the comedian in him – in my opinion one of his best screen appearances. This film is an Indianized version of the famous novel by Alistair MacLean – ‘Fear Is The Key’.

Parallel to ‘Chhupa Rustam’ in 1973, he also appeared in the film ‘Double Cross’. In this, he appears in a double role as the hero and his twin brother who is on the wrong side of the law. He was not yet 40, but he looked quite overage for this twin brothers roles. He appears to be trying very hard to be the role, but was not convincing. The con-man role in ‘Chhupa Rustam’ was a great act, but in ‘Double Cross’ he did not quiet click. It is interesting to note that in the role of the brother on the right side of the law, Vijay is a professional photographer. That rang a bell in my mind and I checked. Very much so, the film ‘Heera Panna’ in which Dev Anand plays the role of a professional photographer also, was released in 1973 itself. As one compares the two performances, they are quite similar in mannerism, attire and body language. Now who was copying from whom? 🙂

In 1973 came another good film, produced and directed by his elder brother Chetan – ‘Hindustan Ki Kasam’. He played the role of a fighter pilot, coming from a family of soldiers and pilots. There is a brief but a great monologue by him in this film – “Saathiyo, Dosto, Hum Hi To Aaj Ke Arjun Hain. . .”. (It can be viewed at 39:40 on the timeline at the link for the film ‘Hindustan Ki Kasam‘.) He presents this monologue, takes to the skies and then does not return. A short role, albeit an impressive one.

A year later he produced the film ‘Chor Chor’ (1974), but did not direct it himself. It is a suspense thriller that did not make it good on the box office, however, it was praised by the critics and reviewers. The film had no songs, and its star cast was very interesting. Vijay had assembled many actors of yesteryears for this film – Trilok Kapoor, Jairaj, and Ranjan. The female lead opposite to Vijay himself is Leena Chandawarkar. I have not seen this film, but it seems interesting enough to merit a view.

In 1974, he appeared in another film, in a very impressive performance once again. The film ‘Kora Kaagaz’, and he is cast with Jaya Bhaduri as the leading pair. The film is about an idealistic romance that transforms into matrimony. And the matrimony cannot withstand the reality of social relations and issues of personal choices – it breaks apart. Alas, there is a happy ending as the estranged spouses meet and make up in railway waiting room. Another very impressive performance.

Then, after a gap of another 4 years, Vijay appeared in another very good role – that of a rich landlord, very well performed. The film is ‘Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki’. A gem of a film by Raj Khosla, Vijay is pitted against two seasoned performers – Nutan as his first and legally wedded wife and Asha Parekh as his second companion in life, whom he brings home much to the dislike of the first lady of the house.

In 1981, came the film ‘Ghungroo Ki Awaaz’ – a tale of haunting and intrigues. Once again, Vijay finds himself out of his depth. Is that a reflection of being a very good director and then come to act under the direction of another director who may not be as well capable. Don’t know whether we should draw this comparison. But then this film is not in my list of impressive performances by Vijay.

In 1984, Chetan Anand produced and directed ‘Hum Rahe Na Hum’ in which Vijay and Shabana Azmi played the lead pair. Then in 2001, he produced and directed ‘Jaana Na Dil Se Door’ in which he and brother Dev played senior roles in a film with an impressive star cast that includes Kamini Kaushal, Mohnish Behl, Moushumi Chatterji, Indrani Bannerjee, Dinesh Hingoo and Vikram Gokhale.

Vijay also appeared in a mini series on TV in 1994, titled ‘Tehkikaat’, in the role of Sam D’Silva, an investigator.

Readers would remember that Alfred Hitchcock always made it point to appear in his own films in a fleeting cameo appearance. That was his signature mark in his films, and the audiences would eagerly await to catch his appearance as they viewed his films for the first time. Vijay Anand has also a similar reputation, albeit we are not sure we have tracked down his cameos in all the films that he directed. A brief list of what I have been able to compile.

He appears in ‘Funtoosh’ (1956) as a young out-of-work writer, who meets Funtoosh (Dev Anand) after he is released from the mental hospital. Funtoosh gifts him a pen to write.

Then in ‘Tere Ghar Ke Saamne’ (1963) he appears in the stairwell of Qutab Minar, wearing spectacles, walking down the stairs with two other persons, as Dev and Nutan are busy with their amorous inclinations singing “Dil Ka Bhanwar Karey Pukaar”.

In ‘Guide’ (1965), we hear his voice, as an unknown stranger is asking about Raju guide on the railway platform. Just a very brief dialogue.

In ‘Jewel Thief’ (1967), we hear his voice on the phone, in a brief conversation with Helen.

In ‘Prem Pujari’ (1970) he appears very briefly in the role of a spy, a fleeting cameo.

Again in 1970 ‘Johnny Mera Naam’, we hear his voice very briefly as an officer of Nepal Police greets Iftekhar at the Kathmandu airport, welcoming him to Nepal.

Here is a very interesting on screen appearance trivia. Hollywood producer and director, Mike Judge of the ‘Beavis And Butthead’ fame, was a great fan of Vijay Anand. In fact, in his animated film ‘Beavis And Butthead Do America’, there is a song being played in a casino in Las Vegas. On stage, among the musicians, there is a guitar player accompanying the singer. Mike Judge had based this character on Vijay Anand. The song in that film is ‘Love Roller Coaster’, available on YouTube; just click on the link.

A brief list of shelved films of Vijay Anand.

After ‘Rajput’ (1982) and before ‘Main Tere Liye’ (1988), Vijay Anand launched ‘Dekha Jaayega’ with Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff. Anil backed out at last moment. After a brief gap, the film was planned again with Saif Ali in place of Anil, but was later shelved.

In 1988, he planned the film ‘Dosti Ka Taqaaza’ starring Mithun and Govinda. It was later shelved.

He appeared in the film ‘Insha Allaah’ as the hero opposite to Zarina Wahab. The film was later shelved.

He directed ‘Chura Lenge Ankhon Se Kajal’ (1992) with Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor. This film was also shelved.

In 1997 he starred in and directed the NFDC (National Film Development Corporation) film ‘Nyaymurty Krishnamurty’. This film also did not see the light of the day.

In the 1990s, he also started working on another film ‘Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas’, which could not be completed, probably did not go beyond the planning stage.

OK, so today’s song. It is contributed by Avinash ji. The film is ‘Ghungroo Ki Awaaz’. The story is of a family conspiracy with shades of reminders from the film ‘Mera Saaya’. The protagonist falls in love, the lady dies in confusing circumstances, then she returns as a ghost to haunt the man. The plot finally nails down another family member, who is attempting to get rid of the protagonist, for the sake of inheritance. There are maybe some more films that are based on this scenario.

The music is by RD Burman, the words are from the pen of Vijay Anand himself and Kishore Kumar is the playback voice.

A heartfelt salute to this celluloid artist who donned many a hat in his career, and had left behind a memorable legacy.

Today 23rd January (2020) is the 123rd birth anniversary of one of the greatest ‘sons of this soil’, a great visionary, courageous and brave leader Subhash Chandra Bose.

On this occasion, today I am presenting a song from the ‘1966’ movie ‘Netaji Subhashchandra Bose-1966’.

‘Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’ was directed by Hemen Gupta for ‘Adarshlok, Bombay’.

Madholkar, Leela Mishra, Rajeshwar Dayal, Sudarshan Sethi, Mouni Chatterjee, Kant Kumar, Paresh Kumar, Munshi Niyamatulla, Kishan Raj, Mohan Kaul, Jaisingh, Sawant, Kamal Kapoor, Moore, Vulga, Supariwala, Panna Kapoor, Harry, Pears and Kelli.

This movie had five songs penned by Kavi Pradeep and composed to music by Salil Chaudhary. Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey, Savita Bannerjee, Hemant Kumar had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Greetings all for the celebration today – the anniversary of declaration of our nation as a Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic.

The Constituent Assembly, consisting of 389 eminent people from across all walks of life and all population segments in the country, was established on 6th December, 1946. After a string of debates, which included public debates in different parts of the country, the Assembly agreed to adopt our constitution on 6th November, 1949. And then on 26th January of 1950, the nation of India, that is Bharat, was declared as being governed according to this document which is the supreme law of our land.

The Preamble to the constitution states the following,

WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:

JUSTICE, social, economic and political;

LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;

EQUALITY of status and of opportunity;

and to promote among them all FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation;

IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty sixth day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.

 

The constitution become the bedrock foundation for enunciating all the defining principles of governance and jurisprudence, which in turn form the source of all the laws that apply to our country and its citizens.

In terms of an identity, a nation is characterized and represented by a set of symbols which identify and define it. Wherever we may be in this world, whatever may be the query about what India is, the answers will always be in terms of certain symbols that are constant and do not change – our flag, our national emblem, our national anthem, our currency, and more.

As a matter of fact, symbols and symbolism form a very imperative part of our lives. All around us, in our everyday environment, we encounter a multitude of symbols that relate to every aspect of our lives. They could be fashion brands, corporate houses, currency, governments, services, road traffic – well, just any class and category of ‘things’ in and around our lives. These symbols are significant artifacts that represent, convey, and inspire a plethora of meanings and emotions relating to our everyday lives and experiences. These symbols may be local or universal. Everywhere in the world, the sign of dollar is a symbol for money. Traffic lights and signs are universal symbols, recognized across national boundaries. Emoticons we use every day now in our communications, are symbols that represents emotions, things, communication snippets. I could go on describing, and there would be no end to how symbols have become such an integral and pervasive part of our lives.

In a world we live in – a fragmented world of divisions that are represented and controlled on the basis of multiple criteria. We are a world of nation states. And the world over, the national identities are represented and underscored by a set of symbols. The flags, the emblem, colors, badges, plants/birds/animals – in fact each nation has a collection of symbols to characterize and epitomize its national identity. In our native Hindi, the word for flag is ‘निशान’ (nishan), which is a synonym for ‘symbol’.

National anniversaries are also in the nature of symbols of a nation. The celebrations of these anniversaries represent a dynamic continuity of the national identity across the pages of history. There is an evolution and transformation that happens with time, but the basic elements and definitions remain a constant. That constancy is an edifice of identity and a hallmark of stability and continuity in the matters of everyday interactions in the lives of the people of the nation. The presence of these symbols in our lives, and their everyday transactions, generates in our hearts a comfortable feeling of being – being an Indian.

For example, encountering the flag – our Tricolour, evokes in the heart, overwhelming emotions of pride, honor, affinity, affection and belonging. These symbols have become so much a part of our existence, that inside ourselves very strong emotions are now linked with these symbols. These symbols are now a cornerstone of our and our country’s existence.

The matter of honor and pride, linked with symbols and the emotions that these symbols evoke, has been a matter of very personal and a very human experience all across the history. The song being presented in this post today is a very forceful and compelling testimony on the inherent relationship between symbols and matter of national honor. Here is a brief slice of history representing a true episode from the annals of the Rajput history. As the reader will go through this song, one will find many symbols – that of patriotism, personal relations and personal sacrifices – being invoked.

The episode tells a piece of history, about Haadi Rani, who is now a folk heroine in Rajasthan. Haadi Rani was the daughter of King Haada Chauhan of the Kingdom of Boondi. She was married to Rawat Ratan Singh Chundaawat of Salumber (in Udaipur). Ratan Singh was the commander of the army of Maharana Raj Singh of Mewar, India was ruled at that time by the sixth Mughal Emperor – Aurangzeb Alamgir.

In a turn of events, the royal Mughal forces invaded Mewar. Maharana Raj Singh sent an urgent emissary to Rawat Ratan Singh, to raise the army and join the battle against Aurangzeb’s forces. As circumstances would have it, Ratan Singh had just been married one week prior. Initially, he was hesitant to leave his newlywed bride, and go to the battlefield. However, Haadi Rani reminded him of his duty towards the king and the kingdom, and prevailed upon him to join the battle. Ratan Singh left Salumber and his bride, and proceeded to join Maharana Raj Singh with his contingent. However, his mind was still engrossed with the amorous affections for Haadi Rani.

Midway from his march towards Udaipur, he sent back a messenger to his palace, with a message for his bride – that she should send him some token symbol of love – ‘प्रेम चिन्ह’, to sustain him through the times he is away from her. On reading the message, Rani sensed the state of mind of her husband, and at first, was quite bewildered as to what she should do. She apprehended that his mind being engrossed with her, he would not be an effective soldier and commander on the battlefield. But quickly she made up her mind, and decided the commit the ultimate sacrifice. She instructed the messenger quite sternly. Then she proceeded to behead herself with a sword. The messenger, very shocked and shaken, followed her instructions, and carried her bleeding head on golden tray, covered with her bridal finery, to Ratan Singh.

Ratan Singh, waiting eagerly for the ‘प्रेम चिन्ह’, received what he never expected in his wildest dreams. Uncovering the tray, he saw the head of his newlywed bride. His grief and his repentance had no bounds, for in a flash he realized what Haadi Rani had done, and why had she done it. As the folklore goes, he picked up the head and slung it around his neck with the tresses that he had once caressed with love. With this demeanor, he launched himself into the battle. It is said that fought valiantly like a man possessed, and led his army to victory against the forces of the Mughal Emperor. Once the victory was attained and the opposition army was in retreat, Ratan Singh alighted from his horse, knelt down on the ground and proceeded to behead himself.

In the intense and turbulent martial history of Rajasthan, this episode stands amongst the most powerful and most emotional, where the honor of the kingdom, and its security is perceived as a paramount commitment, even above personal engagements and requirements. Haadi Rani made the supreme sacrifice for the sake that her commander husband would not be swayed by the thoughts of his recent matrimony, and that the sight that she eventually presented to her husband would have served as a vicious impetus for him to give his utmost in the battle against the enemy.

The symbolism of honor – the trumpets announcing the onset of warfare. The symbolism of love – the ‘प्रेम चिन्ह’ that  Ratan Singh request for. And the symbolism of sacrifice – the ultimate step taken by Haadi Rani. This song converges these symbolisms into itself. A wonderfully emotional and a soul stirring presentation of one of the most chilling episodes of Rajput history.

The song is from the 1965 film ‘Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal’. In the film, the setting of this song is as follows. A group of students, including Tanuja, Rajeev and Raj Kishore, are visiting another college in another city, for the annual festival of the latter college. As part of the program, all participant colleges are to present a stage item at the festival. This performance is presented by the protagonist group. In the film, Rajeev is the creative spirit of the team, and he completes the writing of this poem just in time for preparing the performance. On stage, the role of Haadi Rani is played by Tanuja, and that of Rawat Ratan Singh by Raj Kishore. We can see Rajeev doing the rendition of the poem on the mike placed in the wings of the stage.

The words of this poem are written by Manmohan Tiwari, the only song of this film that is not written by Neeraj. Music composition is by Roshan. The singing voice is of Manna Dey – the song has been rendered with such flourish and emotional dexterity.

A stirring reminder again today, the price of breathing in free air is defined through examples like this episode from our history. The finale of the song brings us back into convergence of the historical and the present tense – “O Bharat Maa Teri Jai Ho”.

Whatever else may be our compulsions, our personal motivations, our limitations, our interests, I am sure none of us differs about this sentiment – “O Bharat Maa Teri Jai Ho”.

Today 6th Feb 2020 is one hundred and fifth birth anniversary of Ramchandra Narayan Dwivedi (06.02.1915-11.12.1998), popularly known to all of as ‘Kavi Pradeep’.

Kavi Pradeep was a great poet and lyricist admired by the whole film industry in India. And as a singer too. Though he has sung very few songs, he has left an indelible mark in the history of Indian movies.

He has penned over five hundred songs as a lyricist and as per statistics on the blog so far 181 out of 531 of his lyrics have been posted on the blog. So, one can understand we still have a long way to go to bring all his lyrics here on the blog. (I think finding all the songs (audio/video) may be difficult now).

As a tribute to him today we have a song penned by him for the 1952 movie ‘Kaafilaa’.

This movie had two songs written by Kavi Pradeep and the today’s song in fact was noted five years back but it was lying pending. (The audio links that were available then have also become obsolete now. However, luckily, I was able to find other links to this song).

‘Kaafila-1952’ was directed by Arvind Sen for Munshi Productions, Bombay. It was produced by S.H. Munshi.

It had Ashok Kumar, Nalini Jaywant, Motilal, Ranjan, Sunalini Devi, Nazeer Hussain, Amita, Bhagwan Ji, Mona, Krishnakant, Shakti, Mumtaz, D.S. Panchotiya, Samar Chatterjee, Parvatibai, Sachin Ghosh, A. Sharma, Munshi Khanzar, Anand Prabhu and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 05.05.1952.

This movie had total eight songs written by Vrajendra Gaur (five songs), Kavi Pradeep (two songs) and Moti. B.A. (one song).
Music for this film was composed by two music directors viz. Husnlal-Bhagatram (six songs) and Bhola Shreshtha (two songs, (both songs penned by Kavi Pradeep).

The voices of Geeta Dutt, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Shamshad Begum, Talat Mahmood and Zohrabai Ambalewali were used in the songs of this movie.

11th february is the remembrance day of Pt Narendra Sharma (28 February 1913 – 11 February 1989) .

Present day HFM lovers have no idea about the contributions of Pt Narendra Sharma if they just go by the wikipedia entry on him. The person writing his wikipedia entry has no clue about Pt Narendra Sharma.

Pt Narendra Sharma was a renowned poet who wrote poetry in Hindi and Urdu. Lata Mangeshkar used to read his poerty and sing them on Radio before she became a playback singer. Here is how she described her association with Pt Narendra Sharma:

“I used to call him ‘Papa’. The first time, I met Papa (Pandit Narendra Sharma) it was at Master Vinayak’s residence. He was accompanied by the eminent litterateur Amritlal Nagar. He asked me to sing for him. During those days, I didn’t need a second invitation to sing. I’d burst into a song whenever I was asked. He was a learned man. I’d spend hours listening to him. In 1968, when I recorded the Bhagavat Gita, Papa came home to congratulate me. I was anxious about my Sanskrit pronunciation. Papa assured me I had done a good job. Papa stayed in Khar. I’d visit his home. My ties with him and his family were very strong. His 3 daughters were my age. I’d carry extra clothes to his home and stay overnight. His daughters and I would do dhamaal all night. His wife though Gujarati, adopted the Uttar Pradesh culture after marriage, because Papa was from UP. I never heard him saying a bad word about anyone. I met Harivanshrai Bachchan Saab at Papa’s place. They called each other ‘Bandhu’. I don’t think I was so close to anyone outside the family. I discussed all my problems with Papa. He called me daughter but always addressed me as ‘Lataji’. I objected to that. But he persisted. When he died of a heart attack, I was heartbroken. No one could take his place.”

He was a lyricist in Hindi movies. HFM is repletre with lyrics containing Urdu words. Pt Narendra Sharma would mostly write songs conttaining Sarskritised Hindi. And he proved that one can write immortal songs in pure Hindi. Take the example of the immortal bhajan from “Bhaabhi Ki Choodiyaan”(1962).

This song, Jyoti kalash chhalke was covered in the blog within a few weeks after this blog was started. There were visitors of this blog who logged on to this blog daily just to listen to this song. There was one grandmom who one day complained that the song has been taken off and that she is no longer able to make her young grand daughter listen to this bhajan- a practice that she was following without fail every morning !

I put on this song every day for my baby grand-daughter…and today it says the video has been removed by the user….could you reinstate it please? It’e been so lovely to hear it…along with the lyrics…I learnt the song from your blogpost!

This song has so many heartwarming comments in the blog. One of these comments is from Mrs Lavanya Shah, the daughter of Pt Narendra Sharma !

How many of us know that Vividh Bharati, the musical channel of Akashwani, was started by Pt Narendra Sharma ! When Government of India decided to have a music channel, Pt Narendra Sharma was hired as Chief Producer to start this project. He conceptualised and executed this project. “Vividh Bharati” , a name that he thought of, started its broadcast on 2 october 1957 from Bombay. The very first song that was played on this brand new Radio station was “Naach Mayura Naach”. It was sung by Manna Dey, penned by Pt Narendra Sharma and composed by Anil Biswas.

Many of the programmes that we still listen to today on Vividh Bharati were stated during those early days and they were the brainchild of Pt Narendra Sharma himself ! For instance “Hawa Mahal” is being broadcast on Vividh Bharati right from its beginning.

A programme for fauzi bhais, called Jaimala was started in Vividh Bharati on evenings in 1962, in the wake of China war. On saturday evening, this programme would be presented by a celebrity. This vishesh jaimala is one of the most popular programmes on Radio.

When Asian games were held in New Delhi in 1982, it was Pt Narendra Sharma who wrote the theme song-“swaagatam suswaagatam”. This song has now become a standard song to be played during official functions, such as Republic day etc.

On the occasion of the remembrance day of this remarkable artist, we pay our tributes to him by covering a song from “Satyam Shivam Sundaram”(1978). This song is sung by Lata and chorus. Pt Narendra Sharma is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song, a welcome song, is lipsynced by Zeenat Aman and others.

I was aware that today is the birth anniversary of Pran, but I was not aware that today is his 100th birth anniversary !

It was on this day 100 years ago that Pran (12 February 1920 – 12 July 2013) was born.

Pran was born in Lahore and he made his debut in films in Lahore in early 1940s. There, he soon graduated to lead roles. In “Khaandaan”(1942), he had acted opposite Noorjehaan. . After partition, he came to Bombay where he was a nobody and so he had to start from scratch there.

It was in Bombay that Pran began to get the roles of a villain and it waas in these roles that he made his mark. He started his stint in Bombay with “Ziddi”(1948). He played villains but no two roles of his were same. In every movie he brought something new to his acting. And his acting was so convincing that ordinary movie goers dreaded and dipised his roles. Very few people in India named their sons as Pran. That is the kind of impression he had created in the minds of movie goers. 🙂

In 1960s, his dark roles gradually started to become less dark, with doses of kindness and comedy in them and a time came when he became a character artist, beginning from “Upkaar”(1967). The distributors of “Upkaar”(1967) were very nervous, unsure how this new role of Pran would be received by the moviegoers who were so used to see him as a dreaded villain. Fortunately, the movie was a big hit and Praan’s role as Malang Chaacha was loved by moviegoers.

Pran had got to sing very few songs on screen as a villain, but he started to get songs as a character artist. And this process started with “Upkaar”(1967) itself. The song Kasme waade pyaar wafa turned out to be a much loved song, much to the relief of Kalkyanji Anandji, who were dreading that their composition would flop because it was to be picturised on Pran !

Subsequently, Pran has figured in quite a few songs in Hindi movies. And these songs became surprise hits. For instance, “Zanjeer”(1973) song Yaari hai imaan mera yaar meri zindagi became the most popular song of the year in Binaca geetmala ! “Kasauti”(1974) song, Ham bolega to bologe ki bolta hai was my favourite song durings its time. Same was the case with the song Daru ki bottle me sahab paani bharta hai from “Majboor”(1974).

On the occasion of the 100th birth anniversary of Pran, here is a song from “Zindaadil”(1975). The song is sung by Lata, Shailendra Singh and Mahendra Kapoor. Verma Malik is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song is picturised as a get together song. It is lip synced by Rishi Kapoor, Zaahira, Neetu singh and Pran.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala. Incidentally, he too shares his birthday with Pran. So we take this opportunity to wish him a happy birthday and many happy returns of the day. Today also happens to be the wedding aniversary of our regular Nitin Shah. We wish him and his better half on this occasion.

Quite a lively and appropriate song for the occasion it is.
