I came across this song long back during my routine browsing. At that time I had not started looking for ‘Films with same title’.

Yes, we already have the film ‘Dharti’ of 1970 on the blog, which has some of my favorite songs. Here is this film of 1946 made with the same title which is making its debut today on the blog with this song.

As per information available this film was directed by Manibhai Vyas and it had Mumtaz Shanti, Trilok Kapoor, Padma Banerji, Vikram Kapoor, Baby Anwari, Sheikh Hussain, Pandit Iqbal, Jugal Kishore, Lakshman, Mustafa, Leela Shinde, and Tipnis.

Lyrics for this film were penned by Pandit Indra and Music was composed by Bulo. C.Rani.

As per information available on myswar.com this film had total eleven songs composed by Bulo C. Rani. Lyrics of all the eleven songs are by Pandit Indra.

singers’ names are available for nine songs there and as per the information given Manna Dey, Hamida Banu, Mohantara Talpade, A.R.Ojha have lent their voices for the songs of this movie.

I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs please.

(I came across two interesting song titles which is ‘Bambai se chappal laana’ and ‘mohe panghat pe chhed gaye’ which may give us one more ‘Mumbai’ song and a ‘panghat’ song which may not be same as ‘mohe panghat pe’. But we need to explore them. )

Here is the first song from ‘Dharti-1946’ to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Hamida Banu. This is a song that continued to grow on me as I listened to it a few times.

Atul’s note: The tune of the song is reminiscent of a very well known song of that era viz. Maar kataari mar jaana (Shehnaai)(1947).

Today (1 may 2016) is known as “May Day” or International Labour Day. Many countries celebrate another festival (spring festival) on this day which is called “May Day”. The labour related “May Day” is celebrated only in few countries on this day. There are countries that celebrate the International Labour day on some other date.

This day came about in an era when workers did not enjoy rights and they had to work under oppressive conditions. As a result of labour movements, Trade Unions came into existence and workers began to enjoy better working conditions and remunerations.

It is to be kept in mind that working conditions have improved for organised labour. Labour in unorganised sectors do not enjoy the same benefits. Labour (as well as other

When we look at the lots of organised labour all over the world, we find that organised labour of Industrialised nations, that enjoy high productivity in their industries, enjoy better facilities than the organised labour of coutries that followed leftist/ socialistic policies.
So it means that labour (and other class of society) prosper only if the economy of the country is doing well. and economy of a country does well if the policies of the country encourage economic growth.

India is a classic example of how change in economical policies can change the lot of its “labour” and other classes.

India was following a socialistic Industrial Policy that saw the economy of the country on the verge of collapse in late 1980s. India sought the help of IMF to bail it out. The conditions laid down by IMF forced India to open its economy. It was this economical liberalisation that enabled India to finally start to grow economically. The economy of country began to grow at a high rate. In the three decades of socialistic economy, the per capita income had grown only at the rate of 1.3 %. Post liberalisation, the country has seen per capita earning double in a decade, thanks to high growth rate of economy. So the message is, if the economy grows, then the people working in the economy benefit.

It must be said that it is the private sector in India that has led in the economic growth. The government sector by and large is struggling to play catch up. Lots of reforms are required in Government sector before they too can start to play their meaningful roles in the economical growth of the country.

On the occasion of International Labour Day, here is a song from “Pyaar Ka bandhan”(1963). The song is sung by Rafi and chorus. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi.

The message contained in the lyrics of this song are rather mixed. There is some upbeat message like “Mehnat ne hamko paala” and “Sirf apni baahon ka bal hai” but then the messages that follow are largely of despondency and hopelessness, viz.
“Ham logon ka is duniya mein
Koi nahin rakhwaalaa”

and
“Yehi thhi purkhon ki taqdeerein
Yehi hai hamse hona “.

Then there is this line containing the word “Gareebi” that always riles me up-
“Iint aur patthar bojh nahin hai
Bojh hai teri gareebi ee”

Now more than half a century later, situation is quite different. Things have changed a lot. People who are not afraid of hard work can get work, but people who are looking for “naukri” rather than “kaam” (read sarkaari naukri) may no longer get the kind of “naukri” where they could get away without needing to work and perform.

This song, like most such songs of this genre tries to tell that “Mazdoor” is “gareeb” because it is his fate and it will remain his fate in future as well. So what does a “mazdoor” do ? Perform “mehnat” while cursing his “Fate” and remaining reconciled with his “gareebi” ? I do not think this is quite a message than a “mazdoor” or for that matter any “worker” should subscribe to. There are “leaders” who have championed the cause of “gareebs” for generations and they still claim to champion their cause. Why are “mazdoor” still “gareeb” when these champions have ruled the nation for generations promising to “hataao the gareebi”. By now the cases of “gareebi” should have been eliminated from the nation the way diseases like “small pox” and “polio” have been eliminated.

Having said that, the “gareeb” of the society must take charge of their own destiny instead of hoping that “leaders” will change their destiny. If they cannot change their own destiny then they should not expect others to change their destinies, especially when those people have no such intentions in the first place and secondly, they do not even have such capabilites.

‘Veer Chhatrasaal-1971’ was directed by Harsukh Bhatt for Shree Ganesh Films, Bombay. As the ‘title’ suggests this film was a ‘Historical’ genre film and based on the life of the Great Warrior of Bundela Maharaj Chhatrasaal (4 May-1649 – 20 December 1731) who established his own kingdom ‘Bundelkhand’.

It had Sohrab Modi, Ajit, Rajshree (South), Jeevan, Jagirdar, Jayshree T, Sunder, Lalita Pawar, Sulochana Chhaterjee, Shyam Kumar, Neelam, Bhardwaj, Arvind Pandya, Ramsingh, Sheri Mohan, Anand Tiwari, Dave, ShreeBhagwan, Habib, Khurshid Khanna, Wajid Khan, Rana, Devchand, Master Ratan.

It had a total of five songs penned by Balkavi Bairagi (three), Neeraj (one) and Maha Kavi Bhushan (one).
The music for this film was composed by S.N.Tripathi. Manna Dey and Suman Kalyanpur gave their voices to the songs for this film.
As per HFGK singer for one song ‘indra jimi jambh par’ is not mentioned, Suman Kalyanpur has three solos and Manna Dey sang one song.

I have selected this inspirational song from ‘Veer Chhatrasaal”(1971) for discussion which I like very much. This song is sung by Manna Dey. I leave the Suman Kalyanpur songs from this movie for our respected ‘team members’ and fans of Suman ji to discuss in their posts.

The film was passed by Censor Board on 22.03.1971.

If we had a look on the films released in the year 1971 so far, this is the only film having its title starting with alphabet ‘V’.
So with the entry of this film, all films of 1971 starting from alphabet ‘T’ to ‘Z’ have now been represented in the blog;

We in this blog have been discussing HFM (and also NFS) for nearly nine years by now.

Availability of songs is a necessary and mandatory requirement for discussing a song. I recall that we in the early days of the blog used to discuss songs that were well known songs which were readily available on YT.

Then I decided to discuss “special” songs on special occasions. I also began to get “farmaishes” from visitors to discuss songs. I found that some of these songs were not available on YT at that time. After some time, a few of these songs would become available on YT and then I would discuss them.

I found that some of the songs that I dearly wanted to discuss were not becoming available. I was quite in awe of people who would upload song on YT.

One fine day I hit upon the idea that I too needed to upload songs on YT if others were not uploading them. I needed to do some video editing for that. I already had the necessary knowhow for that.

The song “Rekha o Rekha” (Adhikaar)(1971) was not available on YT and I uploaded this song on YT for the first time. This song (song number 27 on the blog) became the first occasion when I discussed a song that was especially uploaded by myself with the aim of discussing the song in the blog.

Subsequently, I uploaded some more such songs for the first time on YT. One notable example being “Chaahihe thhoda pyaar”(Lahu Ke Do Rang)(1979), which was the 400th song of the blog, “Sang Basanti Ang basanti” (Raja aur Rank)(1968)- the 600th song in the blog, “Bol meri gudiya gudde ke sang jaayegi” (Bhai Ho To Aisa)(1972), Piya ham saat mulk ka paani (Lootmaar)(1980)- the 1000th song in the blog etc.

Those were the days when finding Rare songs was regarded as something of a black music by me. I became aware of some sites where they would upload rare songs. There was one site where you could download rare songs provided you too uploaded rare songs. How was I going to upload songs that was rare for the distinguished uploaders of that site- I wondered. They in that site would discuss matters like- “I have five songs from so and so movie, I do not have one song from this movie. Someone please upload this song. And then someone would upload that song. I wondered how those people even knew the fand that they were missing certain songs and they even knew the title of the missing songs alongwith details like its singers etc ?

Much later, I came to realise that there was HFGK and all these people were doing were consulting HFGK to see the list of songs in movies there. Till this realisation, I was much in awe of the knowledge of the people discussing rare songs in such sites.

A stage came in the life of the blog (rather unnoticeably) when even we began to discuss rare songs, often uploading these songs ourselves. By ourselves, I mean largely by Sudhir Ji.:) In the process we found some songs that were incorrectly documented and sometimes not even documented.

Some of the songs that were rare in the past have become relatively well known these days. On the other hand, some of the songs that were available in the past have become rare by now because the accounts of some of these uploaders have been closed for some reasons.

I receive lots of contributions (in the form of lyrics and writeups) from regulars. Many of them remain in my inbox for years before they finally get discussed.

When I recently discussed the eighth song from “Bhai Bahan”(1959), prompt came the message from Avinash Scrapwala that only one more song was left from the movie and he had shared that some as early as september 2013 itself. But in this period, the video of the song had been withdrawn and he had no other link available. So will I or Sudhir Ji do something about it.

Sudhir Ji looked in his collection and informed that he had this song available with him.

When I looked in my collection, I found that I too had this song with me.

To cut a long story short, here is the ninth and final song from “Bhai Bahan” (1959) to appear in the blog. “Bhai Bahan”(1959) was produced by G P Sippy for Sippy Films Limited, Bombay. The movie had Daizy Irani, Baby Naaz, Nishi, Rehman, Ramesh, Neelofar, Anwar Hussain, Shammi, Johny Walker, Rajan Kapoor, Master Pakkoo, Sagar, Sony, Vijay, Nazar, Moti (the dog) etc in it.

This song is a children’s song. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is lip synced by baby Naaz (dressed as a “daadhi waale baaba”) in a children’s party. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by N Datta.

When I look back, I found that I had planned to discuss this song two years ago in 2014 as song number 9678. I do not know why this song missed out then. Nevertheless, here is this song now, as song number 12037 in the blog.:)

With this song, “Bhai Bahan”(1959) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

While compiling the list of mp3s of songs composed by R.D.Burman, I came across this song from ‘Shareef Badmaash-1973’. This song reminded me that I had watched this film at a ‘touring talkies’ years back (may be in 1974-75).

Watching films in the ‘touring talkies’ was an altogether different experience for us those who grew up in the seventies. In one of my posts earlier I had mentioned about watching the film ‘Bandhe -Haath – 1971’ in a ‘touring talkies’. The ‘touring talkies’ would visit to village near our Colony (where we were staying then (1968-1984)). They would camp there mostly during the ‘summer vacations’ or during any village festivals or fairs and they would then leave.

Coming back to today’s post, I was aware of two songs from this movie ‘Shareef Badmaash’- ‘tere sau deewaane’ and ‘neend churaake raaton mein’-these were the most popular and frequently heard songs from the movie. They would feature in many song compilations on cassettes and/or CDs.

I had completely forgotten today’s song. Moreover I do not remember to have heard it anywhere all these years.

‘Shareef Badmaash-1973’ was directed by Raj Khosla for Navketan International Films Pvt. Ltd. It was produced by Dev Anand.
The film has Dev Anand, Hema Malini, Ajit, Jeevan, Bhagwan, Helen, Man Mohan (in guest appearance), Trilok Kapoor, Sudhir, Shyam Kumar, Captain, Mrudula, Birbal, Nawab, Minal Hercules, Ved Puri, Mac Mohan, Shah Agha, Jankidas, Uma Dutt, Sudarshan Sethi, Dhanna, Bihari, B.Soni, M.A.Latif, Mamaji, Habib, Gulab Singh, Gurbachan Singh, Aditya Sharma, Rashid Khan, Viju Khote, Sapru, Prem Kumar, and Shatrughan Sinha and others.

The film had five songs in it which were written by Anand Bakshi and they were composed by R.D.Burman. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, and Lata Mangeshkar gave their voices to the songs.

The film was passed by Censor Board on 31.03.1973.

I had also forgotten about the story of this film. So I bought a VCD . Details of the movie that are mentioned in the blurb on the jacket of the VCD/DVD is given below;

The Government of India has devised plans for a new kind of super aircraft. A gangster, Diwan, manages to get this plan which is in a micro-film through a driver who kills the Scientists.

However Diwan gets rid-of this driver and throw him in a river after getting hold of the film. Diwan hides the plan in his safe along with other valuable materials.

The police find out that the plans have been stolen by a ‘Diwan’, and start a manhunt for all Diwans in Bombay. When they come across the Diwan, they ask him to show them his valuable, which he agrees to do so. To his shock, he finds that he has been betrayed and burgled.

The police and the Diwan – with inputs from Diwan- conclude that the thief is none other than Diwan’s trusted man, Ajit. The Police have Ajit arrested, but he refuses to divulge any information.

Diwan recruits a man called Rocky who is entrusted with the task of arranging for Ajit’s escape from the prison, as well as to find out the whereabouts of the valuables from Ajit. Rocky, who keeps on denying that he is Rocky, agrees to do so for a large sum of money as his fee, to which Diwan agrees.

Rocky’s plan is to seduce cabaret dancer, Seema, who is the lover of the Jailer, and hence gain entry to the jail. When this fails, Rocky gets himself arrested and jailed in the same prison as Ajit.

After his entry into the prison, it gets revealed that the man they call Rocky is not Rocky at all but an imposter, who had agreed to pose as Rocky just to get the large fee.

The real Rocky, who calls himself Kanhaiyalal, agrees to help the imposter Rocky to escape from prison along with Ajit, so that they can find the plans and hand them in to Diwan, and collect their fee.

But fate has other plans for the imposter Rocky, as he is caught by another master criminal and gangster, Ranjeet, and is held captive until he tells him about the whereabouts of the plans as well as the valuables.

The song is composed by R.D.Burman and listening to it after many years gives me the heady feeling of ‘pure nostalgia’.

The tune by Pancham Da is very catchy and the song grows up on the listener as one listen to it a few times.

The two movies that were discussed back to back in this series were pure ‘masala’ films. And in the ‘Seventies’ Manmohan Desai ruled as the ‘master of the masala films’.

So, for the ‘movie-buffs’ of the ‘films of the seventies’ and those who enjoy Manmohan Desai’s ‘masala’ films and like the many ‘coincidences’ in his films, or the ‘connecting links’ and ‘happenings as ordained by the ‘Director’ here are some interesting coincidences which happened in my last three posts (including this one);

– The two songs that I selected for this ‘summer nostalgia posts’ are compositions of R.D.Burman and that was the first reason for the posts too,
– The post that I share as a background post also had a song that is sung by Asha Bhonsle (Sitamgar – 1959),
– The second and third post had a song from a film which was produced by an actor for his own banner – 1) Sunil Dutt -‘Ajanta Arts’, ‘Nehle Pe Dehla-1976’ and (2) Dev Anand -‘Navketan International’ – ‘Shareef Badmaash-1973’ and both these films were directed by Raj Khosla (I realized this fact only while finalizing this song-post):)
– The lyrics of the songs for the two posts are by the same lyricist – Anand Bakshi.

In my previous posts I have mentioned about the summer vacatons during my childhood days when I would be watching movies in the company of my Uncles, brothers and cousins. We used to visit the Akola, the nearest city for many reasons (viz buying provisions etc), but watching movies was the main attraction for us – children- to go to Akola.

Watching movies in the company of my uncles (and later on in the company of my brothers) used to be enjoyable and memorable experiences to savour. I still remember standing in queue for getting the tickets of the movie and recalling how cheap the ‘tickets’ used to cost those days. One could watch these for as low as 50 paise(cost of front row-third class ticket) while the most expensive tickets for balcony used to be priced at around Rs.4-5.

On our way backback home we used to drink ‘special sharbat’ en route at the ‘lokhandi pul’ (Iron Bridge) near the municipality garden.

When I thought about sharing a few songs from the films that I had watched during the ‘summer vacations’, I was reminded of the song under discussion. I actually checked my annual exam mark-sheet(it used by called ‘Progress Card’those days ) to confirm the date on which I had watched the movie containing this song.:). I had passed the standard IVth and the results were declared on 30.04.1977. ‘Summer vacations’ may have started thereafter, from May-1st onwards. So I am pretty certain that I had watched this movie in may 1977.

This movie under discussion is ‘Dildaar-1977’. Songs of this movie may not be great songs but, so far as I can remember, a few songs from this movie were very popular those days and were heard on radio and loud speakers quite frequently.

Two songs from this movie ‘school (or sakool:) ) mein kya padhoge’ and ‘teri meri shaadi seedhi saadi’ are there in my list of ‘my favorite songs of 1970’s’.

I was considering sharing one of these songs but I have decided to share another song from this film which is a duet. This duet song is picturised on Jeetendra and Nazneen, the lead pair of this movie.

All songs of this movie are ‘pure nostalgia’ for me. I like all of them. So, while I am happy to introduce this movie on the blog, I am also surprised that till date none of its songs were posted on the blog. And thanks to Atul ji that I can share and discuss this film on the blog after over thirty-nine years of its release which was in 1977. It was passed by the Censor board on 23.04.1977.

‘Dildaar-1977’ was a ‘Suresh Productions, Madras’ presentation and directed by none other than the famous director K.Bappaiah. It was produced by D.Rama Naidu.

It had Jeetendra, Rekha, Nazneen, Shashikala, Prem Chopra, Jeevan, Jagdeep, Keshto Mukherjee, Urmila Bhatt, Roopesh Kumar, Meena T, Sheetal and others. Deven Verma, Sujit Kumar and Raza Murad made guest appearance in the movie.

The story of the movie was by Bala Murugan and Inder Raj Anand wrote the dialogues for this movie.
The film’s title mentioned Umakant Sharma as the Dialogue Director of the movie. (something special ?)

The film had five songs written by Anand Bakshi and composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar gave their voices to the songs of this film, where there was one solo by Kishore Kumar and other four songs were all duet songs sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar.
I do not remember much about the film’s story and other things and would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on it.

Here is the brief (plot) about this movie as given on wiki page;

Banke Lal lives a fairly wealthy lifestyle in a village along with his widowed mom, Laxmi. He has earned an award from the Government as well as had been interviewed on All India Radio as he had excelled in farming. He is in love with Parvati, the daughter of the village Sarpanch, Charandas. When Charandas refuses to permit him to wed Parvati as she is more educated, Banke vows to wed a city-bred woman who is, even more, qualified than Parvati. He re-locates to Bombay, and after a few weeks return home with his new bride, Lata. Shortly thereafter chaos reigns in his life when he finds out that Lata is a mentally unstable runaway bride, her to-be spouse is wealthy Advocate Shamsher Singh and the entry of Savitri – who claims that Banke married her and that she is pregnant with his child.

Let us now enjoy this beautiful song which is a dream sequence song and it is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar.

It has been over a month now since I last sent a post to Atul ji.

My travels on official and personal accounts during this period have delayed my posts on the themes, topics already planned and other posts that have been triggered by the discussions and happenings during this period.

And it was only during this period that the ‘Chennai Gang-out’ took place wherein yours sincerely meet the ‘Yippee Guru’ Pradeep ji at Chennai.

So, post on the details of this ‘gang-out’ is also due.

But to break this silence and to get into the ‘writing mode’, I thought that I would do a ‘warm-up post’ before taking up the planned posts and the ‘Chennai Gang-out Post’.

It was on the first of June that I had last shared a couple of posts to Atul ji before leaving for my official travel to the eastern part of the country. I was there for almost a week and I returned back to Nagpur on ninth of the month to take up a travel to the western part of the country on the twelfth of the month, this time to drop my daughters after their vacation and for doing the admission formalities for the new academic session.

Now, during this weeklong visit, it was almost certain that I would have to again travel for an official visit either to the eastern part of the country or to the south (specifically to Krishnapatnam near Nellore (AP) and Chennai (if need arises) also.

There was also a possibility of my visiting to Raichur (Karnataka), so I thought of covering Bangalore (one can also have a train directly from Chennai to Raichur also) if our ‘Chiller Boss- the Mastermind’ is available there from his busy schedule.

And, my visiting to the ‘head quarters’ of ‘Yippee’ that are located in the ‘Bunkers in the South’, was also very much required at this ‘critical juncture’ when our respected ‘Leader’ had specifically reaffirmed to ‘Yippee’ a movie every day !

Some sort of ‘art of management’ was ‘crafted’ and I got one of my colleagues to visit the east (where he had already visited prior to my visit) so that I could proceed to the south.

I was more than happy to grab this opportunity, even though it was clear that I would miss my marriage anniversary celebrations:) (how I dare to make such plans, Ben Katie was furious, when she came to know:) )

But, I sincerely wanted to break the jinx of cancelling my earlier gang-out visits, where each time the tickets had to be cancelled at the last moment.

Well, everything went well and the ‘gang-out’ took place and we will enjoy the songs and details on ‘gang-out’ in the posts coming very soon…

Now, while returning back from Chennai I was looking back on my travels taken during the month and the days I was away from my base station Nagpur.

It was only seven days out of the thirty days that I stayed at Nagpur and I was away for rest of the month. And, I travel from the ‘city of zero milestone of India’ to East, West, South so far around six thousand kms (considering the total up-down journey) during this period. (I hope that visits to the North and Mumbai also came up in the future as early as possible :) )

I got to pass through many places on train that were just names for me till then as I had not actually visited them or stayed there. I try to get down and roam a little on the platform at such places to get a feel of that place, if possible. This exercise gives me a lot of pleasure.

It is very usual for me that lot of thoughts (mostly philosophical) came to my mind when I watch the surroundings passing by from the window of the train or while standing at the door and enjoying the breeze. I am holding on to those various thoughts and feelings to be used later on for detailed posts. I have already decided on some songs to go with them.

I thought of this “warm up post” at the Warangal Station of the South Central railway, during my return journey from Chennai to Nagpur by the Tamil Nadu Express. When I was thinking of a song to go with this post, the name of the film that immediately come to my mind was this movie called ‘Raahgeer-1969’.

I had earlier shared a song from this film ‘panchhi re ude gagan gagan’ long back and it is still to be posted. However I was looking for a different song and I was sure that I would get it in this album only. So I checked for other songs from this movie and decided on this song that is being presented today.

“Raahgeer” (1969), also spelt “Rahgir” was a Geetanjali Chitradeep production and it was directed by Tarun Majumdar. This movie had Biswjeet, Nirupa Roy, Asit Sen, Sandhya Roy, Vasant Chowdhury, Shashikala, Padma Chauhan, Anwar Hussain, Pahari Sanyal, Master Prasenjit, Ifthekar, Kanhaiyyalal etc in it.

Lyrics for this film for all the ten songs were penned by Gulzar and music was composed by Hemant Kumar.

First of all, this is a production of GITANJALI CHITRADEEP,CALCUTTA.
The name of Hemant Kumar’s production house was GEETANJALI PICTURES, BOMBAY.So; there is every possibility that this may be a home production, in some way or the other, of Bishwajeet.
I remember having seen this film halfway, in the theatre, as it was very much boring.
Directed by Tarun Mujumdar,its cast was, Bishwajeet, Sandhya Roy,Shashikala,Padma,Nirupa Roy, Kanhaiyalal, Anwar Hussain, Pahadi Sanyal, Prasanjit, Iftekhar, Asit Sen, Sabita Chatterjee etc.
The story, as I remember, was of a young man who is fond of wandering and sets out on an endless journey. The film depicts various experiences he encounters in his travels. He does not get attached to anybody, but becomes a darling of many.
Neither the story, nor the music, nor the actors were of much interest and hence no wonder the film wandered aimlessly in search of success.

As mentioned in my previous post I had to travel in the East for some official work as a part of some strategic planning at my work place.

And at that time i.e. around second/third week of May, there was a discussion at my work place, that I could also be deputed for some official work at Chennai in near future.

‘Ab aap mahina bhar Chennai mein rehkar ‘rasam’ khana’.
yes it was in a different tone anticipating that I would be reluctant to go. (Unhe kya pataa ki hamaare man to ladoo phoot rahe the:) , so I was already excited and I wished that it happened as early as possible)

But not wanting to show my eagerness (so that it doesn’t get backfired :) ), and still to ensure that it happened, I also mentioned that I had no problems in eating ‘rasam’, because during my stay at Kota for more than Seven years (Nov’88 to Aug’96) I was a regular customer at the Madras Hotel in the ‘shopping center’ area of that city and all of us friends never missed the ‘rasam’ there. (We had specifically instructed the Manager of the Hotel there that he should keep our quota of‘rasam’ preserved for us even if we were late for the food while returning back late from our working schedule.) And this practice continued till I get married in 1994.

Well, not sure of when actually the visit was going to take place I did not disclose it to Pradeep ji then.

On 6th June on the ‘Whatsapp’ group Pradeep ji mentioned that he was just thinking that there might be a few songs of Rafi-Mukesh that are to be posted yet on the blog. And that he liked these duet songs very much.

In response to that Khyatiben informed Pradeep ji that I had sent a good number of such songs to Atul ji and these songs may include such unique songs.

My response to that was that some such songs from the seventies might have been shared or may be coming up under the #bhoole bisre geet of seventies#

As usual Pradeep ji exclaimed ‘cool’:). He makes such comment of ‘cool’ at most of the times and I always wonder if I will ever see him comming up with the exclamation of ‘hot’ as well.:).

Now, while I was on the tour to Burnpur-Asansol (West Bengal), the developments at the office front suggested that my Chennai visit could materialise around the second week of July . I conveyed this information to Pradeep ji while I was still on my return trip back to Nagpur.

And during this travel I also re-visited the above conversation on Rafi-Mukesh songs and kept wondering about the number of such songs including the number that may already have been posted on the blog. And I started looking for the remaining songs that are yet to come up on the blog.

One song that immediately came to my mind was ‘saat ajoobe is duniya mein’ from the film ‘Dharam Veer-1977’, and the other film that immediately came to mind was ‘Do Jaasoos-1975’.

So, I thought that after reaching home I would search for such songs and see if any one of them fitted into for a post which I could present to Pradeep ji and which, if possible, could be posted on the day we met there.

On searching on net I got a list of songs sung by Rafi-Mukesh’ jodi (I am deliberately not listing all the songs here, till the details are verified).

Going by the possibility of meeting Pradeep ji in near future in my mind, I was looking for a song that would also be suitable for the post on this gang-out, and a song which contained words like ‘mulaaqaat’, ‘geet’, ‘naghme’. I was even prepared to consider a song containing the reference to ‘rains’ as the rainy season would be n full flow all over by then and would serve as an appropriate song for the occasion.:)

Yes! I discovered that there indeed was an a song appropriate for the occasion. I had never heard this song before and this song had the voices of Rafi, Mukesh and Hemlata.

And what a song this was … (shhhh …! Silence!)

During all this period the ‘Yippee Project’ was going on in full swing and regular conversations were going on ‘Whatsapp-Yippee’ group and mails were also being exchanged on regular basis (More on this will be discussed in the following post with an interesting song to enjoy with).

Well, after coming back from the East I get three days at Home and thereafter all of us had to proceed westward for the admission formalities of my daughters at Anand-Gujarat.

Along with other set-up and house-keeping, we had to stay there for five days, but still the ‘Yippee’ project was on roll and kept going …

Now, knowing that the meet was approaching fast, but going by my track record there was a ‘humble request’ from Pradeep ji – ‘Please don’t cancel the visit’!

I assured him that since this time it was for official purpose, it was unlikely to get cancelled. There was in fact the possibility that it could happen very soon as the developments at the workplace were suggesting. So finally, when I resumed office on 20th June, after our return from Anand-Gujarat on 19th, it was decided that I would be leaving for Nellore on 22nd evening…

I thought that I would finish my official work there within three days and then I would reach Chennai by 27th or 28th, but it took me five days at Muthukur-Nellore and finally it was on 29th morning that I started my journey for Chennai (but this delay for helpful for Pradeep ji who was recovering from flu and who had to take rest ) …

I started early at 05:00 hrs from Muthukur for Chennai, and when everything was going well we had a break for breakfast near the Naidupet by-pass and started again.

But suddenly some snag developed in the car and it had to be left there at a near-by petrol pump. The alternative taxi took almost one and half hour to reach and thus delayed the journey.

During all this time Pradeep ji kept reminding me that I needed to update him about my whereabouts at regular intervals. (as he was getting impatient for the meeting … Bahut bechain ham hain …)

Well,the driver of my car was not very familiar with the city of Chennai and the traffic was so heavy that searching on GPS and continuous messaging and calls in between exhausted my cell battery. But before my battery could die, I had passed on the driver’s cell number to Pradeep ji and to my office ( … Suno ab waqt kam hai )

Pradeep ji was aware aboutmy first station at Chennai which was not very far from his place and when I came downstairs after finishing my work at that location, he was standing waiting for me at the reception … we hug each other …

For the first time after coming into contact with the ASAD team I was meeting a member of the team in person …

And as Atul ji and other members have mentioned in their meeting experiences when they met each other, like all other like-minded friends are, Pradeep ji too is a very simple and kind-hearted person, a generous one, ready to share his collections of music and most importantly the ‘project’ that he single handedly undertook several years back.

And to put in simple words I can just say that he has done a ‘great, great job’

It’s huge!!

And, still I have to go through it completely it’s only a part of it that I have so far been able to understand …

And when he was just showing me the Yippee Project, the ‘permutations-combinations’ that we can use to ‘search’ this huge collection and how we could enjoy it better, and how it could all be achieved at a ‘single click’ – the song, the details(write-up of the blog), the lyrics and how one can enjoy this ..

It was literally like…

The experience of meeting Pradeep ji cannot be put in words and so I will just put in simple words that ‘unhone hamaare interzaar mein palken to bichhaa hi rakhi thi’, lekin khatirdari bhi itni ki , ke ‘palak pawde bichhaa diye’.

The emotions and the feelings that I was going through could not be explained in words, I will leave it all to listen to this song and enjoy it all …

It was to feel and savor and I was savoring it, each and every moment that we spent together.

Pradeep ji took me to the heart of the city and show me the important areas where the big-wigs of the city live. He also took me to the ‘boat-club’ of which he is an active member and a ‘rower’, he has qualified and exceeded the minimum requirements required to become a ‘rower’.

I will cut short here, because I had already requested Pradeep ji that he has also to put his thoughts on the meeting, may be a ‘small write-up’, and while I will mainly write upon the background of the meeting, and he will focus mainly on the proceedings of our meeting on 29th and 30th June’2016.

And yes last but not the least is that I enjoyed the delicious food there and as I also like the city very much. (We both expressed our gratitude to God for creating ‘food’ and ‘music’:) )

And I am sure Pradeep will like this;

I told him that I had a song already selected for this ‘occasion’, but didn’t disclose this to him and I am sure that he is going to like it very much because it has Rafi Saab singing here and what a wonderful qawwali song this is …

Wow Avinash ji.. loved reading your emotions and feelings. I was really looking forward to this meet because like Avinash ji.. I was also guilty to have missed a few of the earlier gangouts (case of so near yet so far). This was all the more reason I wanted this to happen.

Also, to actually a fellow YIPPEEEE!! team member in person would be such a good feeling (I have met Aparna, earlier at the Bangalore Gangout (first one). From the time he said he will be leaving Nagpur, I was trying to see how long it would take him to reach the south of india.

Knowing Murphy and how he works overtime.. his train was delayed by some 5 hours. But, we were not going to be bogged down by such stumbling blocks. The yippeeee gang was literally tracking / stalking Avinash ji on his train journey. I was not too interested in his stay in Krishanpatnam as I was more keen that he reach Chennai at the earliest. The only condition was that I was busy on Sunday. Avinash ji, then made sure that he got his job all completed and leave for chennai only after sunday.

I thought he would leave the previous afternoon, but that was not the case.. He finally left the next day morning and had to cover just around 160 odd kms. As mentioned earlier by Avinash ji.. thanks to Murphy, and the breakdown of the car.. his drive was delayed. We were constantly in touch through whatsapp, making sure they were on the right track:).

Finally, he reached Chennai and we met at one of the offices he had some work at. After this he settled the car and sent him on his way. We then went home and spent a little time over there going through the YIPPEEEE!! collection. Initially, Avinash ji seemed liked a fish out of water.. and then things slowly but surely started making sense (or I hope they did). We were not sure about when Avinash ji was going to reach Chennai.. so there was no lunch at home.. so we stepped out to have a very light masala dosa for lunch. I seriously started doubting the fact that he called himself a foodie now:).

The lack of sleep was showing.. and we then decided to head to his guest house. I assumed that he would get a few hours of rest and we will again catch up later in the evening. I even did not message / whatsapp in this time, not wanting to disturb him. Later when I went to pick him up, did I get to know that he was busy all afternoon and got no rest at all:). We then went to the club and I showed him around the place and how things work with regards to rowing. I wanted Avinash ji to try a few of the specialities of the club and also wash these special dishes down with some nice cool.. but again, he hardly ate anything. After spending some time there, we went back home and that is when Avinash ji gave me a few books, one on Rajesh Khanna, one on Sahir Ludhianvi and the best of the books, was the book full of poems written by his daughter.. when she was in her 7th standard. I was totally floored, and here is a girl with profound poetic skills. God bless her.

After this we got back on to Project Yippeeee!! and i showed Avinash ji, how I go about with things once i get the songs from Avinash ji and the text from Aparna. This took a little time as we completed an entire movie. Then we had a simple dinner, pudina roti and dal. My wife and daughter who had gone out, got back and I introduced Avinash ji to them.

As he had not had any rest all day, we decided to call it a day, and I went and dropped Avinash ji.

Looked like he had a good nights sleep and morning when I went to pick him up.. he was fresh and brimming with energy. With so much energy, we had to go eat.. so we went to this small and unassuming place which I like and take most of my friends there. We ordered 2 malli masala dosa, which is essentially a sandwich dosa with coriander chutney spread on the dosas. While we were waiting for the dosa, we ordered one pongal and vada to just keep us busy:). This is when Khyati Ben was very curious to know where we were and what we were upto. She called us and we described the breakfast to her, and she so wished she was there with us:).

One of the main agenda for me was to copy Project Yippeeee!! and give it to Avinash ji. So we went to a store and bought a fast 64gb pen drive. From there, Avinash ji had to go finish some work, so he hailed a cab and went to complete his work. I got back and started copying project yippeeee!! which would take at least around an hour or more. My afternoon which seemed pretty free suddenly had a lot of driving to do.. with pick up and drops at classes. When I had some time in between.. i went and dropped the pen drive with Avinash ji. He had to leave to the railway station at around 8 and I was sure I would make it before that to see him off. But, then, I had not considered our friendly neighbor, Mr. Murphy. There was a bad traffic jam, and what was supposed to take me just 10 odd mins to reach, felt like Bangalore. I did not want to make Avinash ji wait and get late for his train. So there is still this regret that we could not meet once more before he left. I could take consolation when we spoke though, that he might be now making frequent trips to the south:).

So this was how our Chennai meet went and it was nice to have one here. We were also wondering if there is any other Atulite in Chennai. If there are.. we could make sure we meet them also next time we have a Chennai meetup. It was really nice to have you over in Chennai Avinash ji.. looking forward to your next trip.

My last post on songs from films having ‘same titles’ was posted on 14.05.16 where we enjoyed a song from the movie ‘Sitamgar-1958’

After that I have noticed many more films in this category and I will try to share songs from these films as possible.

Today we remember Rafi Saab (24 December 1924 – 31 July 1980) on his death anniversary and I was looking for a song by Rafi Saab from a film which is yet to make a debut on the blog.

So here is a song from the 1955 film ‘Pyaaraa Dushman’.

Many of us are aware of the film ‘Pyaaraa Dushman’ made in 1980 and its songs. Few songs from this movie were quite popular in those days and two songs from this film have already been posted on the blog.

Today we will enjoy a song from the 1955 film ‘Pyaaraa Dushman’.

‘Pyaaraa Dushman’1955 was a ‘Bhagwan Art Productions’, Bombay presentation and it was Produced and Directed by Bhagwan.

Its cast includes Nadira, Jairaj, Sulochana, Bhagwan, Baburao, Leela Gupte, Vasantrao Pahalwaan, Kumkum, Dar Kashmiri, Ramlal, Deepak, Balaram, Swami, Parshuram, Datu, Bihari Singh, Govind, Sando, Kardar and others.

Its music was composed by Nisar and Saba Afghani penned the lyrics for all the seven songs in this film.
Asha Bhonsle and Mohd Rafi give their voices to the songs in this film where they have four duets, two solo songs by Rafi Saab and one solo song by Asha Bhonsle.

Lyrics of this film were written by Saba Afghani and music was composed by Nisar.
This film was passed by censor board on 26.05.1955

For this song, which is being discussed today, HFGK (Vol.III) mentions that this was picturised on two male actors Shamsher and Jahaji in the film.

I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this film and its songs.

Sitting in his digitalized, ‘Wi-Fi…ed- musical chamber, ‘Yippeeee Guru’ was restless after he recovered from a short break (:) , due to health problems and other priorities) of nearly six months from ‘Yippeeee’…

The messages through the unseen satellite waves were very well understood by ‘yours very sincerely’ and two other members of the ‘Yippeeee’ locations – one in the country as well as the other across the globe.

The contacts were soon into action and messages started flowing in to and fro!

‘Yippeeee’ group on ‘Whatsapp’ geared-up and emails started floating …

The ‘Yippeeee Guru’ soon took control of the blog too and he was seen enjoying earlier posts and commenting on them.
It seemed that he wanted to compensate for the ‘lull’ that was there for almost five-six months.

Yours sincerely sensed Guru’s restlessness and since he was the first point where it needed to be re-started, he sent a message to ‘Guru’, ‘Her Majesty’ and ‘Ben Katie’ (other two members of the group) …

‘Let us revive Yippeeee!!’

Yours sincerely texted to members with primary data of ‘Mashaal-1950’. And what a ‘title’ to start the revival …the movie title itself sets for a revolutionary ‘fight to finish’ spirit:)

14th April was the day when primary data of three films was delivered on that day, so a good start was made …

Collection of information for the Yippeeee’ed movies was soon taken up. At this juncture huge stock of finished goods (movies covered for all songs) was already available there, Thanks to the ‘Leader’!

And this finished stock was the ‘raw-material’ from where ‘yours sincerely’ needed to extract information about each song of a film and send it to Her Majesty and Guru for quality check, value addition, packaging with ‘album art work’, digitizing and updating the product for all the ‘music lovers’. Attaching the data on the blog viz. the write up, few comments with the song on the ‘iTunes’ to enable them to enjoy their ‘playlists of choice ‘and ‘smart playlists’ (with various permutations and combinations) was also part of the job.

Now, Yippeeee Guru is always specific in his communications and he is always updating other members about the statistics and where the group stood vis-a-vis the blog in the movies Yippeeee’ed.

The figure of balance movies to be digitized and tagged was estimated to be around two hundred at that time.

Later it was found that the backlog could be more than two hundred and it would take lot of efforts to bridge the gap between the number of movies yippeeee’ed on the blog and number of movies ‘tagged’ by the Yippeeee Gang.

Yours sincerely was quick to add that three movies per day would give us ninety movies in a month (that was on 29th April)

‘That’s a good hit rate and doable’, Guru appreciated in style …

Now, given the ‘democracy and freedom’ (:) ) in the group, members can express themselves in any way. So, though Yippeeee Guru looked to be sincere and declared that he will this time take the matters seriously to the conclusion, Her Majesty was quick to comment ;

‘Pradeep ji is forced or inspired by us, I wonder!!’ (And why not she only could comment like that, because she was always ahead of us and always ‘at par’ with the blog. It was only in the later part that ‘yours sincerely’ got ahead of her:) )

Thus everything was well set and we were on an exciting journey of ‘tagging’ songs for all the films that were ‘covered with all songs’ on the blog.

The regular conversation on the ‘Yippeeee!!’ group on ‘whatsapp’ was making it more filmy and the jokes based on ‘film’s names’ were also entertaining in style like the ‘formula films’ of the ‘seventies’. (Edited*)

On my part I was trying to send maximum data as possible on daily basis and I was sometimes complimented for running like ‘Milkha Singh’ (by Her Majesty).

As a ‘materials’ man I knew that I had to maintain the flow so that we could catch up with the ‘Leader’ as soon as possible, and declare that ‘we have matched with the numbers on the blog so far’:)

However it was not going to be easy . After all, we all had to attend to our primary duties also. (but now, as has been the case with all members of this blog, the blog has become our primary duty or ‘more than that’, so wherever we are , we are there with the blog or the blog is there with us at all times )

As dictated by destiny, my activity was interrupted by travels on account of official and personal reasons. And that in turn delayed the process of getting there ‘at par with the blog numbers’.

By 31st of May 2016 we had already reached 700 whereas the number of movies yippeeee’ed on the blog was around 774. (And we were lagging behind by 80) and Aparna ji was very much ‘at par’ with the blog in sending of the ‘texts’ that was required for digitizing the songs.

On June 1st, 2016, the 700th movie was yippeeee’ed by the group i.e. tagged with all the details (as mentioned above)

It was On that very day that I undertook my first travel to the east, while Guru was getting impatient to reach there..

“By June end we can target to reach the blog numbers”

But, I was not carrying the laptop with me, so there was no activity related with the project from my end for the period of my journey.

In the meanwhile, as excited and impatient that he was, the ‘Yippee Guru’ kept mentioning it on the blog that ‘we will soon be there’.

It was like throwing a challenge to the ‘leader’ who in his sudden newfound ‘avtaar’ was all set to ‘yippee’ a movie per day, and he was not going to take it lying down while the Guru was threateing to inch closer and closer:).

Thus while presenting this song nagri nagri naach rahi hoon on 8th June Atul ji warned (:) )

Seeing that our YIPPEE master Pradeep Raghunathan is hot on the heels of YIPPEED movies and threatens to catch up on all such movies, I had no option but to wake up from my lethargy and restart the stalled project of adding movies to the YIPPEED list. So watch for some renewed action in the blog on this blog where I try to keep ahead of the YIPPEE master.

On June 9th, when I was on my return journey from my first travel break, I received this message from Guru
“Atul ji is gathering steam to add more yippeeee movies …”

It was an unmistakable indication to me to get on with the task and make it snappy.

Back from the week-long trip when I watched my ‘post-calender’ pasted on the wall near my desktop, there was a post due for 10th June on the anniversary of passing away of a famous character actor. The song had already been drafted, but there was very little time for the post, so I thought of defering the post by a few days.

But we had to pre-pone our trip to Gujarat and we had to leave on 12th morning, so there was no time to get into the mood of the post and the post did not materialise as planned.

However this time I was carrying the lap-top with me.

Guru was more than happy:)

Well, while collecting the data, I was also checking for the workability of the links of the earlier songs posted on the blog. That was very much necessary.

A ‘working link’ of the song was very much required for the ‘tagging process’ and after all I thought that it was our moral responsibility to provide ‘working links’ of the songs with the post and rectify matters wherever the earlier links were not working or were removed for some reason or the other. (Guru was on the same line with me when I shared my thoughts to him when I met him at YHQ).

After all, it is mentioned in the ‘about the blog’ section that;

“This blog discusses Bollywood songs of yesteryears. Every song has a brief description, followed by a video link, and complete lyrics of the song.

I am writing this to clear the curiosity of other members who were surprised over the ‘yippeeee gang members’ adding the ‘working link’ of the songs and why it was required.

Well during my trip I continued to send data of one or two films or at times three films as possible every day. On the other side Yippeeee Guru was ‘swimming in the pool of data received at his end and was enjoying it all.

So, he was also philosophical now:)

On 18.06.16 there was this post ‘tumhen saath na laayi bahaar aayi to kya aayi’ where the Leader was in full flow now,

Regulars of the blog may have noticed that the YIPPEE gang, led by the redoubtable gang leader Pradeep Raghunathan were in hot pursuit of the YIPPEED movies and they were threatening to reach all the YIPPEED movies quite soon, seeing that they were only fifty or so YIPPEEDD movies behind at the moment.

One person YIPPying movies, and a gang covering them all, bahut naainsaafi hai. At this juncture, I have received some welcome support from none other than our own beloved inhouse encyclopeadia, Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh. He has come to my rescue by pointing out some movies where only one song is left to be covered. Armed with this information, now I have ammunition to try and escape from the chasers, like how the hero of 1970s movie used to try.

(That was, after all, not fair, since yours sincerely was also doing a bit on contributing of songs/posts :) )

On this Guru’s comment was,

Atul ji.. Congratulations… 14 songs movie getting YIPPEEEED!! is monumental!. Aur baat nainsaafi ki… now we are pretty much on a level playing field… one of our team player… Aparna is partially retired hurt. Avinash ji is travelling and is back in action from tomorrow. So this weekend you will definitely have a good lead… but then we will inch closer and closer.

Now, this was getting more interesting and I decided that I would continue with this song only (films of seventies playing in my mind and the ‘Leader’ finding him chased’) to mark the ‘at par’ moment:)

Back from the second travel break, it was ‘now or never’ for us, so I decided to bombard him with as much data as possible.
As I tried to make up for the lost days and sent details of twenty four movies in three days, which included the details of film ‘Gharana-1961’, Guru complimented me with;

‘Yipeeee waale tera jawaab nahin’

And, at the same time it became certain that I would be travelling to the South now!!

Getting ‘at par’ with the number on the blog and declaring it from the ‘Yippeeee head quarters’ itself would have been great, but then we thought that we would make it when the tally reached 800 movies – covered with all songs.

However unavailability of working links for a few films was causing hindrance to this process.

I had embarked:) on my journey to the South, but before meeting the Guru I had to finish my work at other nearby locations.
As I continued with doing my part ‘Yippeeee’ in ‘transit’ I was also suggested (by Ben Katie, who else?) to relax and take it easy.

I replied;

“Jab ek bhai film ke sab gaane cover karega to doosra bhaai yippeeee bhi karega”

Everything went as planned, I met Yippeee Guru and discussed our plans of ‘declaring the ‘at par’ moment.
I told Guru that we would do it by posting a write up and a song.

By now, gripped with the fever of ‘films of seventies’ I imagined the ‘Yippeee dulhan’ and how the ‘Leader’ was running ahead of us and ‘we were trying to catch him’.

It was all set. When we met it was love – preet – ‘bani hai preet dulhan’ (iss mulaaqaat ka bas mazaa lijiye’)

Back after meeting with the Guru and waiting for the number to reach 800, Guru was getting impatient, ‘Avinash ji post to aana chahiye na’.

As we were not being provided with some missing links by the powers be, he thought that it was a deliberate ploy to deprive us from catching up.:)

On Fifteenth July itself when we finally reached 800, Guru was impatient and he was wanting to post and announce it as soon as possible, rather as immediately as possible ( I can only imagine how he was bearing all this-waiting for such a long time for this post to appear. I apologize to him for the delay in doing this post.)

Well finally the day arrived when we hit the tally to total the number of movies to 800.
On 11th July it was 800 movies Yippee’ed on the blog. We were two movies behind, so we waited for some more movies to be Yippee’ed on the blog.

And I am happy to announce here (of course, with Guru’s blessings with me :) ) that as on today we are at 806, only two movies behind the blog (Qeemat-1945 and Shaarda-1942- are the two missing movies where most of the song links are required to be updated)

Meanwhile Guru kept reminding me of the post and how he was waiting for it. He also gave me a training session on how to create dynamic playlists after syncing the song folders with ‘iTunes’.

One can only understand and realize the efforts put in by Yippeeee Guru over the years when one goes through this experience.

Ben Katie our die-hard supporter was always there to cheer us and motivating us, ‘hamaare karm se abhibhut hokar’ she write to us;

So, I congratulate Yippeeee Guru on his achievement and saluting his ‘love for Hindi Film Music’, his single minded determination for this project of digitizing the songs with the data on the blog and enabling music lovers to create ‘dynamic playlists’ of their choice.

The LP covers that he has collected over these years and added to the ‘album art work’ are just awesome and amazing. It is a journey down memory lane full of nostalgia.

One can see his ‘passion’ and ‘love’ for the Hindi Films and Music in his works and creativity.

I am sure he is the happiest person today, who had dreamed of about this project years back – almost 7/8 years back (I hope I am correct).

I would also like to congratulate Her Majesty (Aparna ji) and Ben Katie (Khyatiben) on this moment that we were all waiting for …
Also I would request Yippeeee Guru to add his comments on the ‘technicalities’ and other ‘important aspects’ of the Project which I may have missed in this post due to my ignorance in understanding of the process in totality, if any.

I had planned this song to be posted in remembrance of Actor Jeevan (October 24, 1915 in Srinagar – June 10, 1987) whose death anniversary was on 10th of June.

Thanks Jeevan Saab for all those lovely memories and the films of the seventies. You will always be remembered as long as Hindi Films are discussed.

During recent months I particularly got involved with the films of seventies viz. ‘Shareef Badmaash-1973’ and others, then ‘Dharam Veer-1977’ was also discussed on the blog.

And watching today’s song particularly brings back memories of those films of seventies (for me) where actor Jeevan had entertained us with his inimitable style and performance.

‘Choron Ki Baaraat’ – 1980 was a ‘Citizen Pictures, Bombay’ presentation, directed by Harmesh Malhotra.
It had Shatrughan Sinha, Neetu Singh, Danny, Jagdeep, Jeevan, Prema Narayan, Ranjeet, Ajit, Heena Kausar, Ram Mohan, Sudhir, Roopesh Kumar, Dev Kumar, B.M.Vyas, Shobha Khote, Azad, Janki Das, Hercules, Jaswant, Mulchand, Suhel, Jaikumar and others.
Story and Screenplay of this film was written by Ravi Kapoor.

Its dialogues were written by Kadar Khan and editing was done by Govind Dalwadi.

This movie had total four songs penned by Anand Bakshi. Music for this film was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Anwar, Jaspal Singh, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey and Shailendra Singh gave their voices to the songs of this film.

This film was passed by Censor board on 19.04.1980.

Big places like Delhi or Bombay (now Mumbai) are well known places and everyone knows them. People who live elsewhere, especially in small places want to visit these places.

Small places on the other hand have very little claim to fame. When I was growing up in Ranchi, I noticed that my place rarely got mentioned in Radio stations or national newspapers. When I listened to movie songs, I would find the movie songs mentioning big places like Bambai and Dilli in them. Even some smaller places viz. Bareilly and Bikaner etc became famous because of popular songs such as Jhumka gira re Bareli ke bazaar me(Mera Saaya) and Mera naam hai Chameli.. chali aayi main akeli Bikaner se(Raja Aur Rank)(1968).

Sending farmaishes for songs to Radio stations also enabled some erstwhile unknown places to become well known. Jhumri Tilaiyya, a sleepy little town in Jharkhand became a legendary place of farmaish senders.

Then there were some lyricists who would have the names of their places as their Takhallus. Thanks to them, their places became well known all over the world.

Small places in UP became famous because of Urdu shaayars who went on to become legendary lyricists in Hindi movies.

There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that the small town in UP namely Badaayun is known all over the world mostly because of Shakeel Badayuni. Shakeel Badayuni put this small western UP town on the world map. Today (3 august 2016) happens to be the birth centenary of Shakeel Badayuni !

I do not notice much fanfare in media on this occasion, though. With time, Shakeel Badayuni seems to have been forgotten not only my music lovers but also by the very place that was brought to world map by him. I doubt that the people of Badaayun are celebrating the occasion with any fanfare as befits the occasion. At least some important locality in Badayun needed to be named in his honour.

This date has been in my radar for several weeks now. This post as well as the next post is dedicated to Shakeel Badayuni.

In this post, I will give a statistical account of Shakeel Badayuni’s career as a HFM lyricist.

Most people may be forgiven for believing that Shakeel Badayuni only worked with Naushad. Even I thought so. Then I found out that Shakeel Badayuni has worked with Ghulam Mohammad as well. And for those who are into statistics, Shakeel Badayuni won three filmfare awards in a row in three consecutive years and none of them were with the above mentioned music directors. They were with Ravi and Hemant Kumar !

Shakeel Badayuni worked with Naushad in 30 movies (301 songs). He worked in 23 movies (180 songs) with Ghulam Mohammad. He teamed up with Ravi in 15 movies (107 songs). Hemant Kumar came fourth with 21 songs in 3 movies.

Shakeel Badayuni worked with 19 music directors in all. Apart from the four names mentioned above, he worked with Sardar Malik (3 movies), S D Burman (2), Roshan(2), C Ramchandra(2) and Sonik Omi(2). He worked in one movie each with Khursheed Anwar, Sajjad Hussain, Shyam Sundar, Khemchan Prakash, Saraswati Devi, K Narayan Rao, Motiram, Kalyanji Anandji, Laxmikant Pyarelal and Shankar Jaikishan.

According to my back of the envelope calculation, Shakeel Badayuni penned over 734 movie songs in 91 movies. I have considered multiple version songs as separate songs for the purpose. The number of songs penned by Shakeel Badayuni in one movie (Kaajal)(1948) is not known where he was one out of two lyricists. In addition, he wrote some non film songs as well.

It is interesting to notice that Naushad-Shakeel Badayuni jugalbandi created 301 songs in 30 movies. 300 of these songs have already been covered in the blog. All these 30 movies have been YIPPEED in the blog.

Alert readers may wonder how all the movies can be YIPPEED if one song in not yet covered in the blog. Yes, that is true. There is one movie that was erroneously YIPPEED even though one song from that song was yet to be discussed. This missing song is from “Ram Aur Shyaam “(1967). We declared the movie as YIPPEED after covering six songs from the movie whereas the movie had a seventh song as well.

Here is this seventh and final song from “Ram Aur Shyaam “(1967). This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and chorus. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad.

The song is picturised on Mumtaz and other ladies while Dilip Kumar is also visible in the picturisation.

Few months back (on 13th May 2016) there was a comment by Anekant ji on this song ‘laayi kahaan hai zindagi’ (Taxie-Taxie 1977). Reading the title ‘laayi kahaan hai zindagi’ of his song post reminded me of a Kishore Kumar song – ‘toone hame kya diya ree zindagi’.

When I checked on the blog I found that this song is yet to be posted and since then I was longing to share this song.

This song is from the film ‘Zindagi Zindagi – 1972’ which was directed by Tapan Sinha. It was produced by Nariman A.Irani and A.P.Sharma.

Tapan Sinha also wrote the story and screenplay of this film.

Its dialogues were were written by Khwaja Ahmed Abbas.

The cast of this film include Ashok Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Waheeda Rehman, Deb Mukherjee, Farida Jalal, Shyama, Ramesh Deo, Anwar Hussain, Chhaya Devi, Nasir Khan, Jalal Agha, Iftikhar, Jagirdar, Master Tito, Mrinal Mukherjee, Keshav Rana, Samar Rai, Jankidas, S.P.Mahendra, Nani Ganguly, Sulochana (Rubi Mayers), Mulchand, Mukri, Reshma, Narmada Shankar, Chand Usmani (in Guest Appearance) and others.

The film was passed by Censor on 19.08.1972.

This film had total of seven songs in it. All the songs were penned by Anand Bakshi and composed by S.D.Burman. Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey and S.D.Burman gave voices to the songs in this film.

Three songs of this film have been posted earlier on the blog.

Years back there was a compilation (on cassette) brought up by HMV titled ‘Sun Mere Bandhu re’ – ‘S.D.Burman sung his ‘own compositions’, which is there in my collection. This compilation had these songs ‘piya tune kya kiya re’ and ‘zindagi aye zindagi tere hai do roop’. Both beautiful songs. This compilation is having all the great songs sung by S.D.Burman. So personally I was aware of these two songs of this film.

Since I have not watched this film till, I cannot say much about this film.

Reading about this film on wiki I came to know that S.D.Burman got the ‘National Award’ for music for this film. However it was surprising to note that none of the songs from this movie made it to the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’ list of that year.

In those years Kishore Kumar was ruling over the charts and in this particular year there were twenty one songs (ten solos, and eleven duets) of Kishore Kumar in the annual Binaca Geetmala list where ‘dam maaro dam’ was on top of the list. I wonder how the today’s song missed this list.

And going by the total number of Kishore Kumar songs posted on our blog, we surely have many more such gems of his, this ‘golden decade’ 1971-80, to be covered on the blog.

Remembering Kishore Kumar – ‘The Versatile Genius’ on his birth anniversary (4 August 1929 – 13 October 1987) today, let us now listen to this song …

Today we add one more movie in our endeavor to bring ‘movies with same titles’ on the blog. Today’s movie is ‘Chaltaa Purzaa-1958’

There is another movie with same title in 1977 which has already made a debut on the blog.  (Both movies have been spelled as ‘Chaltaa Purzaa’ in HFGK, Vol.III & V respectively).

‘Chaltaa Purzaa-1958’ (alias ‘Challenge’) was directed by Ravi Kapoor. It had Shashikala, Kamran, Krishnakumari, Sunder, Neeru, Goldstein, Habib, Shyam Kumar, Satish Batra, Nirmal, Kundan, Amrit Rana, Ahmed, Rafiq and others. This movie had seven songs penned by Jaan Nissar Akhtar and composed by Aziz Hindi.

The film was passed by censor board on 30.12.1958. As per HFGK it was a ‘costume drama’ film. (HFGK Vol III mentions that ‘it seems that this film produced by Jolly Productions was later on released by ‘Atul Chitra’ after acquiring its rights’)

HFGK Vol III mentions that the songs have the voices of Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Talat Mehmood and Shamshad Begam. It does not mention the name of Sudha Malhotra here. However, while listing the individual songs the singer’s name is mentioned only for two songs. They are ‘Dil pe kaisi bekhudi chhaane lagi…’ by Asha Bhonsle, and ‘Mausam bahaar aaya … Nainon ke baan chale’ by Sudha Malhotra.

Today’s song is sung by Sudha Malhotra.

I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

My last post on the blog was on 7th August 2016, and the last contribution I shared to Atul ji was on 11th Aug, so it’s already over a month that either there was a post by me on the blog or I had shared a new write-up to Atul ji.

However the musical journey was on. I was searching for songs on various themes that I wish to share and also the new write-ups that I wish to share in future.

Generally, when the blog is slow (read as when ‘our Masters are in travel or they could not post new ‘song-posts’, due to other priorities) I too refrain myself from sharing new songs to avoid bombarding of the mail box of ‘Our Masters’ with new mails.

But then, I was also eagerly waiting for a post or two of mine on the blog, but only the ‘wait’ was getting extended (may be the right time for these post was yet to come).

On the other side may be a ‘writer’s block’ too was there that prevented me from writing a new post all these days.

As days passed, my ‘wish-list’ of songs began to get extended, with “new” songs getting added to it , but I was unable to decide which topic/ song to take up on my resumption.

So I decided to resume it from my last last post to appear on the blog viz. songs of films having ‘same title’.
After all I had to achieve my goals (🙂 ) and move on further to reach the target🙂 And the today’s song lyrics fit very well into the feelings and mood, and to resume the journey afresh …

Actually this song is waiting to be posted for over two years now as I had shared it to it to Atul ji in July’2014.

The song is from the film ‘Laakhon Mein Ek’ of 1955.

As per information available I can conclude that there have been three films made with this title so far – in 1947, 1955 and in 1971.
On our blog we have already introduced films of this title made in 1947 and 1971 where few of their songs have been posted.

As per HFGK ‘Laakhon Mein Ek-1955’ was directed by Heera Singh for M & T Films, Bombay. It had Jairaj, Asha Mathur, Raj Kumar, David, Smriti Biswas and Madan Puri. It was passed by the censor board on 27.05.1955.

The film had five songs in it which were penned by Ramesh Pant and were composed by Bhola Shreshtha.

HFGK mentions the singer’s name as Asha Bhonsle (three solos)and Talat Mehmood (one solo). Singer’s name is not mentioned for one song – ‘lut gayi apne pyaar ki duniya’.

Today’s song is sung by Talat Mehmood. With this song “Laakhon Mein Ek”(1955) makes its debut in the blog.

After a gap of a few months, I am back here to present a post.

This time the occasion is the birthday of one of India’s most popular leading ladies of yesteryear, Asha Parekh. On this day (2 october 2016), we, on this blog, wish her a very happy birthday!

Asha Parekh was one of the most recognized faces in Hindi cinema through the decade of the 1960s. Not only did she act opposite most of the leading male actors of the time, she probably had the maximum number of hits for a leading lady in that period.

Starting with Dil Deke Dekho (1959), Asha Parekh’s career as leading lady went from strength to strength with Ghunghat (1960), Gharana (1961), Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai (1961), Phir Wohi Dil Laaya Hoon (1963), Ziddi (1964), Mere Sanam (1965), Love In Tokyo (1966), Aaye Din Bahar Ke (1966), Teesri Manzil (1966), Do Badan (1966), Upkar (1967), Kanyadaan (1968), Shikar (1968), Sajan (1969), Pyar Ka Mausam (1969), Aaya Sawan Jhoom Ke (1969), Chiraag (1969), Aan Milo Sajna (1970), Kati Patang (1970), Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971), Caravan (1971), Samadhi 1972), Heera (1973), Zakhmee (1975).

Now that is a STAGGERING number of hits for any actor, male or female. I’ve just listed 25 films – and I’ve probably missed a few. If Rajendra Kumar was called Jubilee Hero in the 60s for his string of jubilee hit films, Asha Parekh deserves that sobriquet for the female lead.

And yet, for all her success, Asha had to wait till Kati Patang (1970) for her first Filmfare Award. In fact, this was the only one she won as leading lady. She had been nominated for Chiraag (1969) but didn’t win. And later, she did win a Filmfare Award for Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978) but that was in the category of Best Supporting Actress. She had also been nominated in this category for Udhar Ka Sindoor (1976).

I remember Asha’s reaction to winning that Filmfare Award for Kati Patang. She felt FINALLY redeemed. For years, she’d been considered a bankable heroine (which was why producers lined up to sign her) but never been rated quite as an actress in the league of, say, a Waheeda Rehman or Meena Kumari. It bothered her, because for any actor, in addition to just delivering hit films, appreciation of his or her performance is highly valued.

To be fair to Asha Parekh, most of the films of the 60s were hardly heroine-dominated, or requiring too much of acting skills from the heroine. Not for nothing was the decade known internationally as the “Swinging Sixties”. Even in Hollywood, the Rock Hudson-Doris Day type “light” romantic films were the order of the day. Or Bond films, where the focus was mainly on the action, and the female actors were largely just accessories to the film.

In India too, this syndrome was very much prevalent. Possibly even more so, because colour films suddenly burst onto the scene, triggering a trend of outdoor location shootings. In this scenario, the emphasis was on everything other than acting.🙂

Most of these films had typical, clichéd storylines. Hillstations, romance, songs in exotic locales, a misunderstanding and a reconciliation. Escapist possibly, but the audience lapped this up, film after film. And where there is demand, producers will be happy to supply.

In this scenario, Asha Parekh just went with the flow, like other actors of the time. It is unfair to expect an exceptional performance from a role that doesn’t have room for this at all. I have therefore always found criticism of Asha Parekh’s acting unfair.

In Kati Patang, where her role was, for once, not quite so glamourous, she managed to bag the Filmfare Award.

I also liked her in Pagla Kahin Ka, another film where she doesn’t have a glamourous (read “going on a picnic with sahelis”🙂 ) role. But the film bombed badly at the box office and that was that.

I remember a Madhuri magazine article of 1970 on the top 3 heroines of the time. The magazine mentioned Waheeda Rehman, Sharmila Tagore and Asha Parekh. So whatever her critics might say, Asha Parekh was recognized in the top league at the time.

Besides, it is upto producers to take a chance and give an actor a role different from one that he/she is typecast in. Shakti Samanta did that with Asha in Kati Patang. But possibly producers preferred Waheeda, Sadhana, Mala Sinha or Sharmila Tagore for roles which demanded depth – and left Asha out of contention for these. Hardly her fault.

All I will say is, even today, I’m happy to watch an Asha Parekh film. Most of her films are high on entertainment. They have lovely, fun, melodious songs – whether it is “bade hain dil ke kaale” or “o mere sona re”. Or the songs of Caravan that are fultoos entertainment – I just love “daiya re main kahaan aa phasi” picturised on Asha.

Finally, it is what you give back to society (in any form) that is your legacy. Beyond her acting career, Asha Parekh will be remembered for the Asha Parekh hospital in Santa Cruz, Mumbai. She also runs a dance academy. She was the first female chairperson of CBFC (Censor Board). So her influence goes well beyond her acting career. So there’s more to her than just her acting career.

We therefore take this opportunity to thank Asha Parekh also for all she has done.

Now onto the song.

This is from Mahal (1969) – the murder mystery, starring Dev Anand and Asha Parekh. The film has some lovely (and popular) songs. I remember seeing this film a long time ago. But as usual, I don’t remember too much of it now, except that it was worth a watch.

Here’s “bade khoobsoorat ho” from the film. The lyrics have been provided here by Avinashji. But this time, not remotely, but sitting right next to me.🙂 But hey, that’s a story for another post – watch this space.🙂

Readers of this blog might now be familiar with a certain pattern of posts on this blog.

While there are posts which focus largely on the song, or the film, or even personal anecdotes, one common pattern is the celebration of anniversaries and milestones, in a post.

The anniversaries are our way of paying tribute to the artiste concerned. Whoever the artiste, whether a composer or lyricist or actor, whatever his level of fame in the industry, we try to remember and honour him on his birth or death anniversary.

The milestones are often in the form of numerical achievements. For example, a century milestone for the blog or an artiste. Or a “1000”milestone. Of late, now that we’ve clocked 124 century milestones, the weight of celebration has shifted for some, from the “100” to the “1000” landmark.

Then there is an occasion that can be considered both an anniversary and a milestone. The birthday of this blog. We celebrate it every year on the 19th of July (the date of the very first song posted here, in 2008). This is also however a milestone because, it is a marker of yet another year completed by the blog. A testimony to its continued health. Every blog anniversary means another 1000-2000 songs added to the blog.

Today we celebrate a different sort of milestone for the blog. One that comes around only once in 1000 days.

Today happens to be the 3000th day of this blog!

I happen to have the honour of writing about this. Possibly because I happened to be witness to the very first of those 3000 days. And now witness to the 3000th.

It fills me with a great deal of happiness to see how the blog has developed from that first day, to today.

I’ve written about this in the past, but I never tire of repeating it (even if some of you might be tired of reading it. :-)). But on such an occasion, I cannot but help reflecting on the blog journey, so please bear with me.

This blog was started on 19th July 2008. But well before it was started, in May-June 2005, Atul and I got to know each other on a cricket forum. We immediately clicked, seeing as we were both of the same generation, having similar memories of those 70s matches and players. We’d discuss Vishwanath (Atul’s favourite batsman), Kallicharran, cricket commentators etc.

The cricket forum had sections allowing for non-cricket discussions too. We’d often discuss news and do masti. We’d also discuss songs.

Atul and I discovered that, apart from cricket, we had a common passion for old Hindi film songs. We started a weekly series of “geetmala” threads on the cricket forum, each week discussing a certain topic. I remember Atul discussing “train” songs one week, I discussed “songs that uplift my mood” one week, and so on. There were a few others on the forum who were also active participants. One of them was Shalini – whose comments can be seen in the early posts of this blog.

During that period, blogging as a social media tool was catching on. Atul, ever keen to experiment, started a blog of his own. You can find it on his blogroll on this blog. I seem to remember a second blog that Atul started around that time.

And then, came this blog “Atul –song-a-day” on 19th July 2008. The other two blogs gradually faded away once Atul began concentrating on this song blog.

On the cricket forum, Atul was well-known for his one-liners. I would, even there, write long posts and comments. Atul would occasionally do that too (like some of his posts here) – but his one-liners could summarise a situation better than anyone could. Long before Twitter made you think in 140 characters, Atul had already mastered the art.🙂 I coined the term “Atulism” to refer to his style of humour.🙂

Anyway, Atul started this blog – and announced it on the cricket forum straightaway.

Naturally, I immediately checked it out.🙂 A combination of songs and Atulisms (hopefully) – too hard to resist. 🙂

The song, as many here now know, was “mile na phool to kaanton se dosti kar li”.

Atul has said many times that he never ever imagined the blog would grow the way it has.

It was meant to be a one-song-a-day blog. That one song was meant to be Atul’s choice.

But he didn’t reckon with his audience and their demands. More specifically, the demands of a greedy humumr guy.

I was so thrilled to see this new blog and listen to the songs posted, that I wanted to see more and more songs on it. Songs of MY choice. And not just one or two, but tens of them.

I began sending Atul “farmaishes”. Not one or two (as happens on Vividh Bharti), but, quite shamelessly, lists of 10-11 songs.

Lalitha, another early visitor to the blog, caught on. She made me feel slightly less guilty when she began sending her farmaishes regularly too.

So now poor Atul, who had started with ONE song a day of HIS choice, ended up facing demands of many songs of other people’s choices.

He gamely tried to satisfy them. But, at the rate of one song a day, supply was never going to be anywhere close to meeting the demand. Supply just had to be ramped up.

And that’s what happened. Although the blog is still called one-song-a-day, we are now used to multiple songs a day.

Those were the very early days.

As we know, there are lovers of Hindi film music around the world. Soon, this blog began getting hits from across the globe. We could see more people commenting on the songs – always a good sign. Some of these commenters then became contributors. Whether helping out with lyrics, or writing posts themselves.

So what started as a one-man show became a community movement.

The knowledge of some of the commenters/contributors is just staggering. The content that now began making its way on the blog – much of it not found anywhere else online – enriched the blog manifold, making it an invaluable repository and archive for record.

So suddenly, the blog went to a totally different level altogether.

I believe one of the most important aspects of the blog is its frequency of updates. Every single day (except for the very rare one), there is at least one song posted. So readers are guaranteed something new everyday.

Many in fact check out this blog first thing everyday to see what’s new. How many blogs can claim this frequency of daily update (that too multiple times a day now)?

Then of course, there’s the reliability factor. Lyrics and other information (for tags) are never compromised on. Atul makes it a point to provide as accurate lyrics as possible. Even when lyrics are provided by other contributors, he checks them thoroughly and makes necessary corrections before posting them. That’s how high he keeps the standard of the blog.

There’s also the ad aspect. This blog is a labour of love. So although there are a few ads, they are very unobtrusive and don’t interfere with the reader’s viewing experience, unlike many other sites out there.

Then there’s also the “regulars” factor. Like I’ve said before, for some, this blog is like the “nukkad ke chai ki dukaan” which is an “adda” for them to hang out at. They’re not only regular visitors, they’ve also forged friendships here. As commenters or posters, they’ve come together thanks to the blog, and by now have become thick friends. Many of them have also met each other in real life.

Over the years, Atul has added several features, each of them enriching the blog. The various statistics, the anniversary dates are extremely popular additions. I use them almost everytime I log onto the blog.

Then there have been other developments too. Atulites (as we call the blog regulars) have added their own masala to enhance the blog. Thus we have the YIPPEE idea and project, started by Pradeep. Blog regulars are constantly trying to find ways to enrich content on the blog. This is because they now feel a special sense of belonging towards the blog. It is now part of their daily life.
They are constantly buzzing about the blog, wherever in the world they may be. There are whatsapp groups of these members, where the blog is a common discussion point.

So as we celebrate the 3000th day of this blog, I remember not just the beginning but also the journey with a lot of nostalgia and fondness. It might have started as a one-man show but today it is a collaborative effort, where everyone is happy to pitch in, as and when required, to help in whatever way he or she can.

THIS is true teamwork – and I am happy, and humbled, to be a cog in this wheel.

In this spirit, today’s song is about a journey and team work.

By the standards of this blog, it is of rather recent vintage. But I am very happy to have the opportunity to post it here, considering it is from one of my favourite films of the last 25 years.

The song is “yunh ki kat jaayega safar saath chalne se” from the fun film “Hum Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke”. It is just perfect for this occasion, as it talks about collaboration and how it makes a journey so much easier when everyone works together to make something happen.

I will not discuss the song or the movie anymore. All I will say is, I have seen the movie several times on TV. It is a TV favourite for all generations. Everytime I see it’s coming on TV, I think “ok, I’ll just watch it for 5-10 minutes”. And I end up sitting through the whole movie. It is just so much fun.

So let’s all celebrate this 3000th day of this blog.

Clearly the adage “once bitten, twice shy” doesn’t apply to Atulites.

At least not to Batulites (Bengaluru-based Atulites).

Otherwise there’s no reason they’d ask me to post a write-up on the blog, describing the recent gangout event. The last time I wrote a post on a Bengaluru gangout, it was more than six months after the event! By then, I’d forgotten some details – and possibly many had lost interest.🙂

Or maybe they’re just forgiving – and giving me a second chance here.

Anyway, this time I hope not to let them down. Also, I’m going to try to complete this post in one shot (unlike the last time).

Readers of recent posts will be aware that Avinash Scrapwala and his wife arrived in Bengaluru on the 1st of October 2016 to spend a few days in the city.

For Batulites, ever happy to meet up, this was reason enough to try to organize a gangout event, with Avinashji and his wife as chief guests.

After some discussion on the Batulite whatsapp group, the date picked was Sunday, 2nd October 2016.

Except for Aparna (whose attendance was tentative), the other Bengalureans confirmed their availability. We were hoping that Aparna would also be able to make it for that date. As it turned out, she had a function to attend on that date and couldn’t make it.

So finally the gangout attendees were Avinashji and his wife, Shenoyji and his wife, Srinivas Gantiji and his wife, Gajendraji, Peevisie’s Mom and myself.

I must say it was nice to have Satulites (spouse of Atulites, not to be confused with satellites :- ) ) also present. As we joked during the sesson, this was our way of brainwashing them and trying to bring them into the fold (in other words, converting Satulites into Atulites). Also, it made Atulites feel less guilty when they spent hours staring at the blog on screen.🙂

To be fair to them though, all of them are already interested in music and quite knowledgeable too. So, whether converted or not, they seemed to enjoy the gangout as much as the rest of us.

Now, about the venue.

The gangouts of 2014 and 2015 had happened at my place. This time too, that was the original plan. Then, a few days before the meet, I got a call from Peevisie’s Mom to discuss about the event.

While discussing, we realized that, Gajendraji’s place in East Bengaluru would be more convenient for the event than my place in South Bengaluru. For one, with Srinivas Ganti also moving to East Bengaluru recently, East ka “palaDa bhaari ho gaya”. I was the only attendee (and Avinashji + wife, of course) who was not from East Bengaluru.

Also, as Peevisie’s Mom told me rather frankly “Aap ke jagah pe internet ka problem bhi hota hai na”. I must admit that in previous events, this had been a bother. And Murphy’s Law was at its best. While internet did work, it was iffy – and distracted us from the gangout itself. When we meet, we want full attention on the event and not have to worry about infra issues.

Gajendraji, on the other hand, has things much more under control. I’d been to his place when Arunji was in town – and his setup is much more reliable. Not only does he have more reliable connectivity, he is also skilled and experienced in connecting devices, streaming live videos and things like that. We knew we had a better chance of fully concentrating on the event.

So we contacted Gajendraji and he was only too happy to host the event.

The Batulite whatsapp group was duly informed – and now planning for the event began in right earnest.

Srinivasji offered to host a quiz programme, Gajendraji also had a quiz in mind. Avinashji suggested a group autograph collage. There was a proposal to watch a film together – after some discussion, we decided it would be Priyatama (1977). I suggested we could all do some singing – even if it was only a few lines (finally this didn’t happen – maybe next time!).

The time was set at 10.00 am. Venue: Gajendraji’s Place.

And so, the day dawned. 2nd October. Gandhi Jayanti. Sunday.

That morning, Avinashji and I went for a morning walk. We were walking towards the usual park I go to, but there was a road block. So we went off on a different route – and we ended up going to the lake park near my house. One that I’ve passed many times but never visited.🙂 The things that you do when you go off your beaten track routine!

Anyway, that was a digression.

The idea was to get ready by 9.00 and take a Uber cab, so as to get to Gajendraji’s place by 10.00. After having breakfast, and a bit of delay, it was almost 9.30 when we left home. But luckily there wasn’t much traffic on the road, so we managed to get to Gajendraji’s area a little after 10.00.

Even as we were entering his complex, we noticed Srinivasji and his wife walking on the road. We’d never met them before but I recognized Srinivasji from his Facebook pictures. So we paid off the cab and walked the few metres further to Gajendraji’s place together.

As usual, Gajendraji was very warm and welcoming. This was the fourth time I was meeting him – and everytime I’ve met him, I’ve always got the same sense of warmth and comfort. One immediately feels comfortable in his presence.

The others had not arrived yet. Peevisie’s Mom had already told us she’d be a little late, as she had some social obligations to first take care of.

While we were chatting and introducing each other, Shenoyji and his wife arrived. So, more introductions. We passed around the sheet for the gangout group autographs.

In the meantime, Peevisie’s Mom also arrived. She’d had a hectic morning, having woken up at 4.00 a.m (and slept the previous night at 12:00 midnight). She arrived with a cake in tow – this was promptly cut and consumed, but not before Gajendraji managed to capture it on video. The cake had “ASAD – Atul Song A Day 2016” on it – and looked (and tasted) lovely. Thank you, Peevisie’s Mom, for this thoughtful addition to the event.

Since we now had full attendance (Aparna having unfortunately confirmed that she wouldn’t be able to make it), we decided to get the activities started.

First up, Srinivasji and his Uttar Dakshin quiz.

This was as follows. He would play part of a South Indian song (audio) on the computer. We would need to guess the mukhda of the Hindi version of that song. He would start with the antara – if we could crack it with this itself, 2 points. If we cracked it only after hearing the mukhda, then 1 point.

We were divided into two groups, based on how we happened to be sitting at that time. Avinashji, his wife and I were in one group. Shenoyji, his wife and Peevisie’s Mom were in the other group.
Srinivasji’s wife had been part of the quiz creation/approval team, so she wasn’t part of any team. Gajendraji also didn’t belong to a team – he was the cameraman.

Early on, it became apparent that it wasn’t exactly going to be a close contest. Shenoyji and Peevisie’s Mom were just too strong for us. Some of the songs suffered from TOT syndrome (term Gajendraji came up with, meaning tip-of-tongue syndrome :-)). Some others were just tough – and one we should have really got, we missed. (Nis din, nis din, from Annadaata).

Anyway, the final results were something like 8-6 or 9-7 (which clearly flattered us, considering they were way better). But the good thing was, the quiz was of a pretty decent standard – the odd easy song but most of them needed some effort. Credit to Srinivasji and his wife for this.

Then, we moved on to Gajendraji’s quiz.

This was more relaxed – only because there were no points.🙂 Or maybe there were, but after some time, nobody seemed to keep track anymore.🙂 That saved me and my team some humiliation.🙂

This quiz was in the format of “guess the singer”. Gajendraji would play a song – and we had to guess the singer. This being Gajendraji, these weren’t Rafisaab, Kishore songs. We were exposed to (and got exposed too) a whole lot of songs, mainly from the 1930s/40s, sung by various singers, from Juthika Roy to Noorjehan to Ameerbai Karnataki to Zohrabai Ambalewali to Premlata to Suraiya to Rajkumari to Shanta Apte to early Asha Bhosle to Mubarak Begum to Meena Kapoor and many more. Not to be outdone, the male singers too were varied, from GM Durrani to Anil Biswas to Khan Mastana to Mukesh. Am sure Arunji would have had a field day 🙂 but most of us were just guessing.

It was a lot of fun – and educational too. I think some of the songs were non-film songs, and many of them possibly not even on the internet. I quite enjoyed listening to many of them, even if I had no clue who the singer was. I would request Gajendraji to upload these songs to youtube if he doesn’t mind. That way, they can be enjoyed by a broader audience – and can make their way to our blog too.

After this session (at the end of which my brain would not have been able to distinguish between Rafisaab and Lata anymore :-)) , it was time for a welcome break. In other words, lunch.

Packed lunch was arranged from Rajdhani restaurant – and all of us went about doing justice to the food.

After lunch, it was time for the film show. Priyatama (1977). At this point, Srinivasji and his wife had to leave, so we said goodbye to them. This was the first time I was meeting them (I think first time for all of us, except Gajendraji?) – it was a pleasure. Looking forward to meeting them at future gangouts too.
The rest of us continued – and the film got underway. I had last seen Priyatama in the late 70s. While I broadly remembered the theme, I’d forgotten the details. I only remembered the songs “koi roko na” and “main jo kahoon haan to haan”. Gajendraji had not seen the film before. Peevisie’s Mom had But it was good for all of us to see it together.

Of course, watching a full film requires a lot of time. We’d watched quite a bit when we decided it was time to call it a day. Peevisie’s Mom had had a hectic morning and was understandably somewhat tired – but she still wanted us to visit her place (which wasn’t too far off) before leaving. So all of us (Avinashji, wife, Shenoyji, wife, Gajendraji and myself) went to her place. We spent about 15-20 min there, met Peevisie’s Dad (also a Satulite?), before it was time to say goodbye to all. All good things have to come to an end – and our gangout was no different.

And this, friends, is the story of our 2nd October 2016 gangout at Bengaluru.

As Avinashji, his wife and I made our way back home by cab, I felt much energized after the event. Music,and discussions on music, anyway tend to energise me – but it is much more so after having an enjoyable time with friends. Time seems to fly on such occasions – but that’s how it goes. I am just glad we managed to have the event, that too, with Avinashji and his wife gracing it.

Now to the song for today.

When music lovers get together, that too Atulites, it is but natural that there will be memories. Of songs, of the blog, of artistes. A gangout is a natural place for this to happen – and our gangout was no different.

So the song for today is also about memories. It is a song from the 1970s – lyrics provided by Avinashji (as usual, with a lot of diligence).

Here is “Yaadon ki baaraat nikli hai aaj, dil ke dwaare” from the film Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973). The film was a pretty big hit – all the songs were hits too. I think “chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko” was one of the most popular songs of the 70s. RD Burman’s star was already on the rise – this film certainly did its share in enhancing his popularity.

Vijay Arora became a known face. Ajit’s growing reputation as a villain got a big boost. Dharam’s reputation as a bankable hero also rose – he successfully survived Rajesh Khanna’s superstardom. One might say, he even thrived – considering the string of hits he had in the early 70s. Zeenat Aman also got a boost in her career with this film. Tariq somehow didn’t make it big despite this film – and Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin a few years later.

In the recent ‘Bangalore gang-out’ series it’s now my turn to do the post part as decided in the ‘MoM’🙂 of the ‘gang-out’.

First of all I express my thanks to Atul ji. It is because of him that I got introduced to so many nice people and I was able to meet them in person at ‘Bangalore’.

My sincere thanks to all ‘Batulites’ for the ‘favors and hospitality’ extended to me and my Wife during our visit to Bangalore.

And most importantly we would like to express our heartiest thanks to Raja ji’s Mother, his Sister, and his Brother-in-law for their kindness, love and affection they showered on us, and for the delicious food we enjoyed there during our stay for three days.

Thanks to Peevesie’s Mom ji for the ‘surprise barging’ at Raja ji’s place on the day we reached there and for the ‘special ASAD cake for the memorable day’.

Gang out day 2nd October’2016;

Prior to the ‘gang-out’ when we were discussing the agenda of the ‘gang out’ day, there was some ‘serious’ discussion- in all possible humorous way – in the group on ‘whatsapp’, where all members enthusiastically participated to finalize the events.

Discussing then, I had planned a small event of getting a ‘collage of autographs’ of all the attendees so that its’ image can be added to the audio of the song that would be posted for the gang out.

But here there was an interesting value addition🙂 to this, when Gajendra ji suggested that everyone has to write down a message and then put his autograph there.

So, the original idea of adding this collage image to the gang out song post was modified, and after reading the messages I had a different idea and a different song occurred to me and that necessitated a different post for it, so we have to wait for another post on this, and this would be coming soon (before the post about Raja Saab).

So now that this post is being taken care of here, we have to wait for the next post!!

Here again I would like to touch upon the original discussions that ‘Atulites- Bangalore Chapter’ (ASAD Blr’) had, almost fifteen days before the actual gang out day, regarding the schedule of the ‘gang-out’ day.

It was at the outset of the discussions that Gajendra ji suggested “If time is more maybe a movie can be squeezed in …”

Thereafter Srinivas ji informed that he has a plan for a quiz ‘Uttar-Dakshin’ where he would play songs in other languages and we had to identify its counterpart in Hindi language. Then there were many topics like ‘antakshri’, ‘great song I discovered recently’, ‘my favorite film/artist’ etc’, ‘one light hearted movie’, and at this point few name of movies were also discussed and from which era it would be was also to be decided.

‘My era 80s’ replied Gajendra ji (and though he mentioned himself as a man of 80s, on the gang-out day I realized that he has a vast knowledge of HFM and other Non-Filmi songs ranging from the 30s-40s to the 80s-90s)

My reply was – ‘70s’!!

So finally picking up from the few ‘shortlisted’ movies from the ‘random stock of CDs’ available, the movie we settled for was “Priyatama-1977”.

I was very keen to watch this movie because, though I had watched it before, it was many years ago and I had forgotten the movie except for its two songs.

“Since you’re the guest of honor we’ll let you choose the movie’ Gajendra ji very kindly threw the ball in my court 🙂 .

Now it was my suggestion that if the movie had already made an entry on the blog and some of its songs were already posted then members should select the remaining songs and do write up on songs that they liked, so as to get this movie Yippeeee’ed on the blog.

That’s how we picked up this song for this post here on the blog🙂 .

“Priyatama -1977” was directed by Basu Chatterjee for Modern Pictures, Bombay. It was produced by T.C.Dewan. Basu Chatterjee also wrote the dialogues of this movie.

It had Jeetendra, Neetu Singh, Rakesh Roshan, Asha Sachdev, Reeta Haksar, Asrani, I.S.Johar, Utpal Dutt, Latika, Roshni, Sundar, Murad, Ritu Kamal, Shobhna, Suchitra, Ajay Kumar and Sunil. Deven Verma, Asit Sen and Jaya Prabha make a guest appearance in this movie. It was passed by the Censor Board on 20.09.1977.

The movie had five songs – four written by Anjaan and Yogesh penned one ‘koi roko na deewaane ko’. Music for this film was composed by Rajesh Roshan.

Three songs from this movie have already been discussed on the blog.

Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar have three solos in the movie while there were two duets one by Rafi and Usha Mangeshkar and one by Kishore Kumar and Usha Mangeshkar.

Watching this movie together was a very enjoyable and entertaining experience, as Peevesie’s Mom ji would easily tell us the next dialogue even before Jeetendra, Neetu Singh or Utpal Dutt or any other artist in the movie could say it on the screen (she remember the songs as well🙂 )

To refresh the memories of those who have already watched it and for those who have not yet watched it, here is a brief about this movie, which I have taken from an article in the daily ‘The Hindu’ dated 25th June, 2015 (the article is written by APS Malhotra ji, in section ‘topics’ – Hindi Cinema under ‘Friday Reviews’ – Blast from the Past)

“Priyatama” (written by Tanvir Farooqui, with a masterful screenplay by Ranjan Bose), is a breezy romance between Ravi (Jeetandra) and Dolly (Neetu Singh) who live in Bombay with their respective best friends, Vicky (Rakesh Roshan) and Renu (Asha Sachdev). The two get married after concurrence of Dolly’s father, Justice Sinha (superb portrayal by Utpal Dutt). However, their pre-marriage romance is unable to withstand the pressures of matrimony with bliss and harmony giving way to bouts of doubt and misunderstanding leading to filing of divorce proceedings through their respective lawyers, Kaantewala(IS Johar) and Rustomjee (Asrani).

Desperate efforts by Vicky and Renu to prevent the estranged couple from splitting are of no avail. Events take a turn when Justice Sinha visits them ostensibly for treatment of his heart ailment forcing the two to act like normal married couples to avoid causing any distress to him. The retired judge who had landed in Bombay to ensure that the relationship is not broken forever sees through the charade. Does he succeed in his endeavour or do Ravi and Dolly retrieve their marriage is something worth watching in the film which spans over two hours – an exception considering that other movies during that period were of three hour duration.

At this point we will go back a little more, i.e. to the first week of September, before I was supposed to book my tickets for the travel to Bangalore and the tickets for return journey from there.

Now most of our regulars are aware of the fact that earlier I had to cancel my tickets for the ‘Mumbai gang-outs’ due to some reason or the other. Very recently I had to change my plans where tickets for me and my wife had already been booked. Almost on all the occasions that I have to cancel my tickets the plan was for both of us i.e. me and my wife.

Every time she reluctantly agreed to my plan. Reluctantly because, she thought what would she be doing there and wondering that what would be her role there.

On the other hand it was my conscious effort (as Raja ji has put it in his post “this was my way of brainwashing her and trying to bring her into the fold) – to include her in this process, as she already listens to music a lot and secondly she would be able to witness our discussions and how we all are motivated and more importantly, she would came to know the reason behind our love for the blog and what we are actually up to.

So by this time she had also decided that ‘yes I will come, but only once!!
“Dekhti hoon aap log aakhir karte kya ho🙂 aur itne saare log mil ke kya karnewaale ho. Lekin iske baad mujhe aane ke liye mat kehna”.

On this I replied to her ‘are aap ek baar aao to sahi phir dekhna, aap dobaara khud hi kahogi ke mujhe bhi le ke chalo’…

So the tickets were booked on 5th September itself.

In the second week of September I had a chat with Raja ji where we discussed the tentative program and our stay there and the date of our return. At that time we were supposed to return in late evening on the same day of the gang-out, which later shifted to next day to have a day extra that would give us a day to relax before the next journey.

“Good, let’s hope ki ye work out ho jaaye” Raja ji was looking forward to it🙂 .

“I think this time it is going to work out as my Wife has agreed to it whole heartedly and not reluctantly :)” I replied to Raja ji.

Prompt came Raja ji’s reply – Ye huyi na baat! Man proposes, wife disposes!

‘Bangalore’ ‘gang-out’ happened with me present there with my wife. To meet Raja ji, his family members and all other members was like a ‘dream come true’ for me!!!

It’s anybody’s guess now ke ‘kiske haan bolne se haan, aur kiski naa ka matlab naa hotaa hai’🙂 .
From the success of this visit, I guess ki ‘wo jo bole haan to haan, wo jo bole naa to naa’🙂 even on ‘wiki’ in the list of songs, the title for this song has been mentioned as ‘tu jo boley haan to haan’ and not as ‘main jo boloon …’

Let us now enjoy this lovely song, which I remember since I watched this movie in the late seventies or may be early eighties.
Two songs of this movie ‘Priyatama-1977’ are already a part of my list of ‘favorite songs of the seventies’ the other one obviously being ‘koi roko na deewaane ko’ ….

Today, 10th October 2016, happens to be the birthday of Rekha, one of the most successful and prominent actors of the 1970s and 1980s.

This blog was started in July 2008 – which means this blog has already seen eight birthdays of Rekha since it was started.

In all this time, I don’t think I have posted any song on her birthday for her. Granted that I wasn’t posting from the beginning – and even the practice of posting songs on birthdays started only later – but even so, I have always missed writing a post for Rekha’s birthday.

This time, I suddenly felt like using this opportunity to not just wish her on her birthday, but also share some of my thoughts about her. It is strange that I haven’t done this until now, considering her entire career coincided with my active film-watching days. So she was an integral part of that time.

So today, I am correcting the situation with this post.

Let me start by wishing Rekha a very happy birthday and many happy returns of the day.

Rekha has been one of the industry’s heavyweights since the 70s – and is not routinely referred to as a “diva” (in its positive sense) without reason.

Yet, when I look back at those early years (the early-mid 70s), I distinctly recall Rekha as not making any impression on me at all.

I was a schoolboy then – and, admittedly, had little understanding of acting calibre. I used to enjoy movies, regardless of who the actors were. The most popular female lead actor of that period was easily Hema Malini. Jaya Bachchan (then still called Jaya Bhaduri) had her own following. There were others who were also fairly popular – Raakhee, Zeenat Aman, Neetu Singh, Moushumi Chatterjee.

And there was Rekha.

She was very much in the mix. Very early on, she had got a big break with Sawan Bhadon (1970) and had fairly well-known films like Raampur Ka Lakshman, Gora Aur Kala, Ek Bechara, Anokhi Ada, Namak Haram, Gora Aur Kala, Kahani Kismat Ki, Dharma and Dharmatma to her credit. And many more too, for she was quite prolific.

Her stature was definitely growing in the industry during that time, even if most of these films were male-dominated films, where the heroine could have been just about anybody.

I saw each one of these films at that time – and I must admit she didn’t make the slightest impression on me. Rather, if I am to be brutally honest, she used to annoy me in those days.🙂

I distinctly remember her in Do Anjaane (1976) opposite a now-noticed Amitabh. And in Imaan Dharam too, opposite Shashi Kapoor. In Do Anjaane, she was ok but in Imaan Dharam, she really annoyed me, with that exaggerated South Indian accent .🙂 Remember “kunchum kunchum”?

She continued doing roles which I couldn’t care less about. If I knew a film was a Rekha film, I’d sigh “oh no!” within.

And then I saw Ghar (1978).

My sister and her friend (who happened to be my age) were going for the film – and since it was holiday time – I tagged along. We had no idea what sort of film it was – I thought it would be one of the usual masala films of the time.

By the time I came out of the cinema hall, I was very quiet. As everyone knows, Ghar is anything but a masala film. It talks about a very difficult (at that time, even taboo) subject. I remember this film making me think a lot. I can’t say the same for most films of the time.

Anyway, Ghar made me completely change my opinion of Rekha. I was hugely impressed by her performance. I realized then, that she had far more depth to her acting than her previous films had allowed her to showcase. After all, it is one thing to do justice to a role, but you also need a role to do justice to your ability.

I also realized then that if she annoyed me in earlier films, it was more due to the roles than anything else. It wasn’t her fault, it was just the type of roles she played.

I think Rekha’s own profile went up a few notches after Ghar. I wasn’t the only one who noticed there was more to her than we’d seen till then.

After that, her career graph just went northwards. She began getting good roles – and got raves for her bubbly, schoolgirl-like role in Khoobsoorat. It was an outstanding performance, in my opinion. From then on, she went from strength to strength. Even today, her performance in Umrao Jaan is talked about. And people remember her in Khoon Bhari Maang, Ijaazat and so many other films.

Clearly, the “ugly duckling” (her term, not mine!) as she’d been considered early on in her career, considering her looks then, had become a beautiful swan.

This was about her acting.

Separate from this, there was of course the whole Rekha-Amitabh Bachchan controversy through the late 70s/early 80s. They acted in a fair number of films together – and there was enough grist for the rumour mills. Rekha herself seemed to add fairly generously to them, though Amitabh, if I’m not mistaken, maintained a dignified silence most of the time. This got interpreted in its own way.

For me – and maybe that’s one reason I am writing this post at all – Rekha is one of a kind in the industry.

Although this post has been mainly about her acting, I feel Rekha is in a different league altogether. And no, I’m not referring to her acting here. There might have been other, just as versatile, actors in the industry, maybe even more – but Rekha is more than an actor for many now. Especially for women.

I think much of this has to do with her personal life and how she has dealt with it. She faced many challenges along the way – her relationship with her own family, her relationship in love, her marriage in which her husband committed suicide. She surmounted all these challenges – this has won her many admirers. She has worked on herself all the time, focussing on her own growth, personally and professionally, without letting others dictate terms to her.

These attributes, in my opinion, are far more valuable than just acting skills. This is also probably the reason why Rekha is held in such high regard by so many, especially women. She comes across as a model of strength for many aspiring women.

Which is probably why I felt I should write this post. There’s a book recently released about Rekha – I haven’t read it yet, but I plan to do so sometime.

Let’s move on now to the song for today.

This is from Silsila (1981). A film that has instant recall for many – not just for its lovely songs (music by Shiv Hari) but for its controversial casting of pitting Jaya Bachchan against Rekha in a love triangle , featuring Amitabh Bachchan. It was, of course, only a story but the Rekha-Amitabh rumours were then at their peak. Yash Chopra, the film-maker, exploited this in his casting and storyline.

The song is “pehli pehli baar dekha aisa jalwa”. It is sung at a wedding early on in the film, where Amitabh and Rekha, attending on behalf of the bridegroom and bride respectively, meet for the first time. The song is pretty chatpata, the dancing is very good – and above all, there’s tremendous chemistry between Amitabh and Rekha in this song.

I’m rather fond of this song – and today, when I decided to post a song for Rekha’s birthday, this was the first one that came to my mind.

I hope you like it too.

And once again, I wish Rekha a very happy birthday. And sorry, Rekhaji, for getting annoyed by you in your pre-Ghar roles. It wasn’t you, it was the roles.🙂

‘Phir milenge jaanewaale yaar dasvidaaniyaa…’

Some people contend that to say ‘good bye’ is to die a little. Readers may wonder why a post introducing a song should begin with this statement.

‘Atul song a day’ has not only given the readers songs one may have missed otherwise, it has also forged a family of diehard fans & followers. Some of them are now identified as Atulites, a term you will not find in any dictionary (so far at least).

These Atulites have bonded beyond the blog, cutting across age & regional barriers. What bind them are of course songs, talent of the team that created those pieces, some interesting and sometimes painful part of the lives of the team players. They (Atulites) interact, exchange notes, and discuss & share matters beyond songs. They also contribute to the blog taking some load off Atul JI. These Atulites have found fun, joy, enlightenment in this coming together. Many of them have not met face to face but that has not weighed down on bonding.

There are times when some people, an Atulite in this instance,need to travel on work, or some other social commitment. That becomes an opportunity to meet Atulites in that new place. A plan then evolves and a gang out happens. Music , fun & nostalgia follow. As readers have noted in recent posts, one such gang out happened in Bangalore on 2 nd October 2016. Atulite Avinash Ji was in Bangalore along with his wife, also an Atulite, and all Bangalore Atulites ( Batulites –as coined by Raja Ji) rescheduled personal commitments to have a gang out. I am fortunate to be one of them.

Meeting Avinash Ji, in Bangalore had no surprises. Instead we felt ‘Haan tum bilkul waise ho, jaisa hum ne socha tha..” (to twist Mukesh’s lines from ‘Himalay ki Godh Me’). I had not met Srinivas Ji too, earlier. But this post is not about Batulites.

Hindi film music is such that over its long history, every possible poignant moments , situations , concepts have been captured in lyrics & tunes and an appropriate song has taken birth. This gang out thus recalled the song ’Yaadon ki Baraat;’ because that is what was experienced during this gang out through quizzes,through talks about the blog,by watching nostalgically ‘Priyatama’ from unforgettable Basu Chatterji. The account of the proceedings of Gang out was presented by Rajaji in his recent post.

That has left me to narrate closure of the fun filled day’s account by saying ‘Good bye’, which brings me to the opening line of this post. As for me I would not toe that feeling. I would rather agree with Richard Bach who said ‘Don’t be dismayed at goodbyes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetime, is certain for those who are friends.‘ Goodbyes are not forever. Goodbyes are not the end. They simply mean I’ll miss you. Until we meet again!

Song for today is about saying ‘Good Bye’ or ‘Dasvidaaniya’ in Russian. This is from the film ‘Pardesi’ ( 1957) an Indo Russian coproduction. The film is based on travelogues of XV century Russian traveler Afanasy Nikitin called “A journey beyond the three seas”. This film was directed by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas with a star cast of Prithviraj Kapoor, Balraj Sahni, Nargis.
