Today 29^th December’2021 is the seventy-nineth birth anniversary (29 December 1942 – 18 July 2012) of Rajesh Khanna, born as Jatin Khanna.

On this occasion we pay our tributes to him and listen a song from one of his movies.

In this ninth episode of ‘Rajesh Khanna- The Phenomenon’ we look at Rajesh Khanna movies in the year 1982. In the year 1982 the following six movies of Rajesh Khanna were released (including ‘Disco Dancer’* where he had a friendly appearance).

In the previous post in this series ‘Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 8’ we had discussed how Rajesh Khanna in the late seventies switched on to different roles exploring and introspecting himself and taking a new challenge for his ‘second innings’.

In the late seventies and early eighties, he has a string of successful movies viz. ‘Amardeep’ (1979), ’Thodi Si Bewafaai’ (1980), and critically acclaimed movies like ‘Red Rose) (1980), ‘Phir Wohi Raat’ (1980), and ‘Bandish’ (1980).

In 1981 he tasted more success with movies like ‘Dard’, ‘Dhanwan’, ‘Dil e Naadan’, ‘Qudrat’ and ‘Fifty-Fifty’.

‘Qudrat’ (1981) was a multi-starrer movie and had good success at the box-office. That saw Kaka putting more efforts to change his image and considering films in the ‘multi-starrer’ and ‘action’ genres, which he thought earlier was not his ‘cup of tea’. It can also be said that these two ‘genres’, where he was not doing films, were partly responsible for the failure of his earlier movies on the box-office.

In 1982 we had Kaka’s films like ‘Raaput’, ‘Ashaanti’, ‘Dharam Kaanta’ which were multi-starrer as well as action movies. He further continued doing such ‘multi-starrer-masaala’ films like ‘Paapi Pet Ka Sawaal Hai’, ‘Dharm Aur Qaanoon’, ‘Maqsad’, ‘Bewafaai’, ‘Awaam’, ‘Vijay’, etc. coming in the next few years.

Today’s song is from one of the above movies and that movie is ‘Ashaanti’. This song also beautifully catches the ‘spirit of team efforts’ instead of a ‘one-man-show’ and advocates ‘helping each other’ to get success.

‘Ashaanti’ is directed by Umesh Mehra for Eagle Films, Bombay, and is produced by Parvesh C. Mehra.

The movie has Rajesh Khanna, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Shabana Azmi, Mithun Chakravarty, Kanwaljeet, Amrish Puri, Jeevan, Narendra Nath, Monty, Mac Mohan, Kishore Kapoor, Yusuf Khan, Ram Sethi, Nadira, Satyen Kappu, Bob Christo, Mohan Choti, Avtar Gill, Ajay Agrawal, Amir Jambra, Yusuf, Ganesh, and others. Prem Kishan and Ramesh Deo makes a special appearance in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 01.05.1982.

This movie has five songs composed by RD Burman. Lyrics for all the five songs are penned by Anand Bakshi. Following is the list of songs this movie had.

That was all around forty years back now. And if we go back further ten years to the year 1972. That is around fifty years back from now, we have the following movies of Rajesh Khanna released in that year.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990) -5 (1985)

In today’s post we move on to Pancham’s music in 1985.

Pancham Da continued to give his best in this year too like the previous years. He composed music for eighteen movies in 1985, one more than the tally of seventeen in 1984.

His music of 1985 was a mix of some excellent, very good and good music. Songs of ‘Alag-Alag’, ‘Saagar’, ‘Arjun’, ‘Savere Waali Gaadi’, ‘Zabardast’, ‘Laava’, ‘Sitamgar’, ‘Raahi Badal Gaye’ (ik baat dil mein aayi hain) were quite popular and frequently heard.

The list of eighteen movies where Pancham composed music in 1985 is given below.

For today’s presentation we have a song from the movie ‘Aar Paar-1985’. This movie will make its debut on the blog today. This was one of the reasons to select a song from this movie. The other reason being that the song is sung by R.D. Burman himself. Another reason is that this song is a lesser-heard song as well. But if one listens to this song a few times it grows upon you. It is a very nice hummable philosophical song.

Today (4 january 2022) happens to be the twenty-eighth ‘Remembrance Day’ (27 June 1939 – 4 January 1994) of our beloved Pancham Da. It has been twenty-eight years since he left us forever. But the music that he created will remain with us forever as long as HFM is around.

This is the fifth song in this series. I had kept this song up my sleeve for this day after drafting it more than one month back.

The song being posted today is our tribute to ‘Pancham Da’ and his ‘music’ in HFM.

The song is from the movie ‘Aar-Paar’(1985). ‘Aar-Paar'(1985) was directed by Shakti Samanta for his home productions ‘Shakti Films, Bombay’. Shakti Samanta was also the producer of this movie. It was an Indo-Bangladesh Co-Production. And Syed Hasan Imam (of Chitrangan-Dhaka) was the Co-Producer of this movie from Bangladesh.

‘Aar-Paar'(1985) had Mithun Chakravarty, Rosina, Nutan, Asit Sen, Utpal Dutt, Manik Dutt, Tarun Ghose, Ghulam Mustafa, Hasan Imam, A.T.M. Shamsuz Zaman, Ahmed Sharif, Ghulam Rafique, Madhu, Shekhar, Amal Bose, Kali Pada Sen, Bullet, Qutub, Mohammad Ali, Chunnu, Minhaz, Barua, Nurul Islam, Sumita Devi, Shahre Banu, Maya Ghose, Reena, Papiya and others.

Story of this movie was written by Shakti Pada Rajguru. Screenplay of this movie was jointly written by Shakti Samanta and Shanu Bannerjee.

Dialogues of this movie were written by Pradeep Roy Chowdhury. Bijoy Chowdhury was the editor of this movie.

This movie had six songs written by Anand Bakshi and composed by R.D. Burman. kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Shailendra Singh, Sabeena, Yasmin and R.D. Burman had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 19.11.1985.

The cast of this movie included Sulochana, Shahu Modak, Trilok Kapoor, Lalita Pawar, David, Kuldeep Kaur, Prem Adeeb, Roopmala, Kumkum, Jaymala, Bhagwan, Dara Singh and others.

Today 13^th May’2022 is the seventy-sixth birthday of Shri Bishwanath Chatterjee compiler of Hindi Film Geet Kosh Vol-V (1971-1980). Those who have the copy of this Geet Kosh would have read about his brief introduction on the cover page no.2 of this Geet Kosh.
He has also been a co-compiler with Shri Hamraz ji for HGK Vol-I to Vol-IV etc. and a co-compiler with Shri Hamraz ji for the ‘List of Hindi Films (Talkie) – 1931-1987.

He has also been a co-author/co-editor with Vishwas Nerurkar for the books on Khayyam Saab, Kishore Kumar, Vasant Desai and Sudhir Phadke.

Here is a brief about him as mentioned in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) by Devi Shankar Kanojiya and other details which Shri Chatterjee shared with me. (Devi Shankar Kanojiya a family friend is younger to Bishwanath ji by five years and settled at Kanpur now. He was earlier working in Telecom department of Government of India.).

Bishwanath Chatterjee was born on 13th May’1946 at Nagpur. He is born and brought up at Nagpur only. After his studies he joined the Department of Audit & Accounts (Postal). (This department was later bifurcated in two i.e., Accounts and Audit being separate departments.)
His first posting was at Jaipur (for Jaipur circle) where he stayed for one year i.e. 1970-1971. His next posting was at Bhopal where he stayed till 14.05.1980 and was transferred to Nagpur w.e.f.15.05.1980.
He retired in May’2006 as Director of Accounts (Postal) and now settled in Nagpur. He has a daughter who is happily married and stays abroad with her family. She has a son.

It so happened that around 1966 Bishwanath ji got interested in Hindi Film Music, or rather the HFM attracted him so much that after two years i.e., around 1968 a thought to compile the details of all songs till date, then stems in his mind.
However, in absence of sufficient and required resources he had to suppress the idea temporarily but a strong urge to have such a compilation has already taken deep roots in his mind.
In ‘1975’ he got to know about Harmandir Singh Hamraaz ji through the weekly ‘Screen’ and came into contact with him. He came to know that Hamraz ji was also working on a similar project and in fact almost 50% work of compiling such information has been completed by Hamraz ji till then. So he decided to support full heartedly to Hamraaz ji. And he has been instrumental in preparing the ‘manuscript’ for the first four volumes of ‘Geet Kosh’ and after that he independently compiled the ‘Geet Kosh – Vol-V’.

He also accompanied Shri Hamraaz ji in extensive travels to places like Bombay, Poona, Indore, Baroda, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and Calcutta, for gathering information and meeting various film personalities and film connoisseurs to get accurate information as possible.

In between, in the year of 1975 he founded ‘Saurabh Radio Shrota Sangh’ at Nagpur and also published ‘Saurabh-1977’ (as a co-editor). But due to economic constraints he had to discontinue this publication.

Shri Chatterjee has been a ‘passionate’ student of Hindi Film Music and has keen interests in Hindustani Classical Music. He has his own library consisting of lot of books about films and Geet & Ghazals.

I got a chance to meet him once during my stay at Nagpur in 2015-2017, where our regular reader Shri Avinash Shravane was also with us. It was a ‘film screening’ program by ‘Cine Montage, Nagpur’.
I left Nagpur on 09.03.2017 and since then I am in touch with him on phone-calls. As very rightly mentioned by Shri Kanojiya ji, Bishwanath ji is very humble, generous, enthusiastic and extremely sensible person.

Yesterday evening when I called him he was very happy and enthusiastic as ever. We discussed many topics and shared our thoughts too.

Once again I wish him a very happy birthday today, and a healthy and peaceful, yet’ full of music’al life ahead.

When I think about him I find the today’s song perfectly fit for this occasion as the ‘fragrance of his works and words – in the form of ‘Geet Kosh’ will be there forever –spreading the ‘spring’ of ‘nostalgia and memories’ for generations together.

Dialogues of this movie were written by Gulzar, and he also wrote the lyrics for the songs in this movie.

Today 4^th June 2022 is the 86^th birth anniversary of actress Nutan, or I must say one of greatest and finest actress of Hindi Cinema. She is undoubtedly my most favorite actress from Hindi movies.

Nutan was born on 4^th June 1936 and passed away on 21^st February 1991.

Today, in this post I am not going to discuss here detailed biography, but I would only like to list some of her movies which I get to watched till date. I might be forgetting some which I would have watched with elders in the family when I was a child.

I will start with the movie ‘Saraswatichandra-1968’. I still remember that as a child learning in 7^th or 8^th standard when I get to watch the movie ‘Saraswatichandra (1968)’ (in black and white) during the weekly screening of movies at our colony club we were staying then.

After watching this movie, I have never forgotten this face and the song ‘phool tumhe bheja hai khat mein’. There was a girl in our class having same face cut as that of Nutan, and that girl remained my crush forever thereafter.

Around the same period that is 1976 to 1983 I get to watch her ‘Dil Hi To Hai’, ‘Kanhaiyya’ ‘Chhalia’ in our colony club.

I think I had also watched ‘Anuraag’ and ‘Yaadgaar’ with my parents.

I do not remember correctly but I must have watched ‘Baarish’, ‘Paying Guest’, ‘Seema’ ‘Manzil’, ‘Anari’, ‘Bandini’, ‘Saudagar’, ‘Meri Jung’ on TV.

I watched her ‘Tere Ghar Ke Saamne’ many times and that remained one of my ‘all-time favorite movies’. First I watched it on Video cassettes and later-on on TV channels.

I watched her ‘Khaandaan’, ‘Milan’, ‘Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya’, ‘Karma’, and ‘Naam’ during my stay at Parli Vaijnath (1985-1988). I had bought the VCD of ‘Dulhan Ek Raat Ki’ recently (2004-2010).

I may be forgetting some movies which I might have watched. But whatever movies of her I watched I had always likened her roles and her acting. I think she was the most gracious and admired and respected heroine of her times.

Today on her birth anniversary I am presenting a song picturised on her in the movie ‘Meharbaan’. I have yet to watch this movie.

“Meharbaan-1967” was directed by A. Bhim Singh for ‘A.V.M., Madras’. It was produced by A.V. Meiyappan. It had Ashok Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Nutan, Mehmood, Sudesh Kumar, Bhalla, Shaymlal, Jankidas, Umesh Sharma, Ramavtaar, Rajkishore, Mukri, Sulochana, Shashikala, Shyama, Raj Mehra, Ramesh Deo, Ashim Kumar, Kumari Padma, Master Levi, Jayanthi, Bharathi and others.

Here is a brief about this movie as taken from ‘Wikipedia’,

Shanti Swarup (Ashok Kumar), a wealthy businessman, lives with his three sons Ram, Shyam, and Sunder; his wife Parvati (Sulochana Latkar); widowed daughter Devki (Shashikala): unmarried daughter Geeta; and adopted orphan Kanhaiya.

Kanhaiya (Sunil Dutt) is raised as Shanti Swarup’s family member and he in return is very dedicated to this family, especially his adopters – Shanti and Parvati. They come across Laxmi (Nutan) whose parents, known to the Swarups, died and so they also bring Laxmi into their family. Parvati wants Sunder to marry Laxmi, but Sunder wants to marry his lover, Rachna. Through a dramatic twist of events, Kanhaiya marries Laxmi and Sundar marries Rachna. Shanti arranges for Geeta to marry Ramesh, the son of his friend Lala Karamchand. Financial losses cause Shanti to lose all his wealth. Ram and Shyam refuse to help him at all, and Karamchand cancels the impending marriage. Kanhaiya and Laxmi leave the house due to the instance of Shanti to make him self-dependent and also ill-treatment by his sons. But they are given shelter by Laxmi’s long-lost brother Madhu (Mehmood) who doesn’t reveal his identity to Laxmi. Disheartened, depressed and unable to face anyone, Shanti dies. Even as his palatial house is to be auctioned by Karamchand, who is voracious, a devastated Parvati is on her deathbed as she cannot think of living anywhere else, and only a miracle can save the now ruined family, but Kanhaiya saves Karamchands son Ramesh from a car accident. Thus, Karamchand gives the palatial house in favor of Kanhaiya and on turn reunites with the family and fulfils the wishes of Shanti Swaroop.

“Meharbaan-1967” had seven songs written by Rajinder Krishan. Following is the list of songs as mentioned in HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970).

All the songs of ‘Meharbaan-1967’ were composed by the legendary music director Ravi.

Today’s song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Nutan lip-syncs the song onscreen with Sunil Dutt also seen in the picturisation.

Welcome all to this post of mine which is coming after a l-o-n-g gap. I was not sure this time also if I could be able to send this write-up. But thanks to ALL, I can now hope to share articles on regular basis as earlier. More about my long absence in the other future posts.

Coming back to the today’s post, which comes on a special occasion and that is the celebration of ‘Hindi Diwas’ today on 14^th September.

Though I am not aware more of more details on this subject to write here today, I would like to add the following brief which I have gathered from the internet about this subject. (I hope readers will forgive me for my ‘ignorance’ on the details of this subject).

I am reproducing here the information given on internet about ‘Hindi Diwas’ which I have taken from ‘Wikipedia’

हिन्दी दिवस प्रत्येक वर्ष 14 सितम्बर को मनाया जाता है। प्रबुद्ध सोसाइटी के राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष डा. श्री प्रकाश बरनवाल का कहना है कि 14 सितम्बर 1949 को संविधान सभा ने यह निर्णय लिया कि हिन्दी केन्द्र सरकार की आधिकारिक भाषा होगी। क्योंकि भारत मे अधिकतर क्षेत्रों में ज्यादातर हिन्दी भाषा बोली जाती थी इसलिए हिन्दी को राजभाषा बनाने का निर्णय लिया और इसी निर्णय के महत्व को प्रतिपादित करने तथा हिन्दी को प्रत्येक क्षेत्र में प्रसारित करने के लिये वर्ष 1953 से पूरे भारत में 14 सितम्बर को प्रतिवर्ष हिन्दी-दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है। स्वतन्त्रता प्राप्ति के बाद हिन्दी को आधिकारिक भाषा के रूप में स्थापित करवाने के लिए काका कालेलकर, हजारीप्रसाद द्विवेदी, सेठ गोविन्ददास आदि साहित्यकारों को साथ लेकर व्यौहार राजेन्द्र सिंह ने अथक प्रयास किये।

Well, above is the brief only. There is a long history behind ‘celebrating Hindi Diwas’ and ‘celebrating it on 14th September.

I had been always longing to bring here songs which talk about our culture, traditions, folklores etc etc and I have presented few of them under the series ‘Desh Ki Mitti Ki Khushboo’. Similarly, every year whenever ‘Hindi Diwas’ is celebrated I was looking for a suitable song for this occasion. Earlier I had come across many ‘non-film songs’ on this subject. However, when I was looking for the songs from the ‘1972’ movie ‘Kavi Sammelan’ I came across the today’s song which talks about the greatness of ‘Hindi’ -‘Hindi Bhaasha’, and I am very happy to present this song on the blog today.

Today’s song or rather a ‘poem recitation’ is by Santosh Anand ji of his own poem.

A brief about the movie ‘Kavi Sammelan-1972’ is given below.

‘Kavi Sammelan-1972’ was directed by Kedar Sharma for ‘Rajshri Productions Pvt Ltd’.
It was produced by Tarachand Badjatya.

Introduction of the poets on the dais was done by Ramrikh Manhar.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 18.02.1972. Thus, this movie has now already completed its fifty years of release.

The footnote for this movie page in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) mentions that ‘Bharat ke shreshthhtam Kavi pehli baar ek saath rajat-pat par pesh kiye gaye thhe.’

Regulars on the blog are aware that, besides being music-lovers and Hindi movie buff, many of the blog members also love ‘cricket’ and ‘rail/train’, or if I am not wrong especially the ‘Indian Railways’.

Travelling by train is something which is always interesting. Most of us enjoy and love it. It brings back many memories from our childhood days too.

From 2017 to 2019 when I was in Kenya for a project, I badly missed train travel. The place where I stayed for almost nine months in Nairobi had a rail track passing behind my residential place that reminded me of our Indian trains every time a train passed by.

When I returned back to India after finishing the project I was supposed to visit close relatives residing in Maharashtra. I needed to visit other places too. I reached back in India in Dec’2019 end and before I could make plans for any visits, ‘pandemic’ arrived. The best plans of everyone came to a halt.

I had an an pportuniy to visit Mumbai in Feb’2020 when I had also booked a ticket, but due to some minor operation I had to ‘cancel’ it.

Life moves on. The wheels of time keep ‘moving ahead’ as well.

As the effects of pandemic waned and the restrictions were lifted we had our elder daughter’s marriage in March’2022 at Vadodara. Most of our close relatives visited us and thus the long awaited get-together with relatives finally took place.

However, I keep longing to travel. Travelling became possible in April’2022 when I and my wife travelled to Nagpur to attend a marriage. I was working then and had got only two days leave so we had to return back immediately.

But this train travel after a long gap was still enjoyable though the railways had not started providing the ‘linens’ in the AC coaches till then.

Finally I got this long vacation this year since 01^st January’2023. My last contract with the employer ended on 31^st Dec’2022, so I was a ‘free bird’ again.

We were already planning to travel to Nagpur and Parli Vaijnath in Maharashtra to meet in-laws, my mother at Parli, and other relatives. But in an unfortunate development my father in law had to be admitted to a Hospital in Nagpur and we had to rush there. That is how we travelled to Nagpur in Feb’2023 end. After alighting at Ajani Station (one station before Nagpur junction), we directly visited the Hospital where my father in law was admitted. After visiting him we went to their place which was our base station for the next 8/10 days.

My father in law got discharged from the hospital the next day so he was back at home and everybody was happy. My wife was happy and she took care of her father for his medicines, diet etc. till we were there.

Meanwhile I travelled to Amravati by road-with a friend from Nagpur- to meet our common friend who was with us in Kenya. This long awaited meeting was also happening after a long gap of more than three years.

Thereafter, I and my wife travelled to Chandrapur by bus to meet my maternal relatives and then back to Nagpur. This meeting also happened after a long gap of almost seven years (last we visited them when we were staying at Nagpur).

We visited some more relatives (including my cousins) staying in Nagpur and around (Koradi), and left for Parli-Vaijnath by a private travel bus. At Parli-Vaijnath we meet my mother, my younger brother and his family and stayed there for two days. From there we left by train for Shegaon via Akola.

We had to wait around half an hour at Akola station to board the next train for Shegaon. We stayed at Shegaon after visiting the holy place there and next morning started for Vadodara by train again.

So, after a fifteen days tour we arrived back at Vadodara. Meanwhile our younger daughter also travelled to Pune with her friends and she also reached arrived back at Vadodara the same day. We received her at the railway station as her train from Pune was supposed to arrive forty-five minutes after the arrival of our train.

All of us arrived back home after enjoyable journeys.

After a gap of two weeks we again travelled to Rajkot for my younger daughter’s project there and also to visit our elder daughter. After staying a Rajkot for a day we come back to Vadodara by train. Earlier we used to travel by our car to and fro, but this time we took a Volvo bus by state transport to go to Rajkot and we travelled by train in the return direction.

A trip to Kachchh was already overdue for me since 2019-20 for transfer of house to other owner there. (During this period my younger brother staying had visited us thrice including his visit for my daughter’s marriage).
This time I travelled alone by train to Gandhidham and took the ST bus for Mundra. That revived my memories of up/down travels when I was working near Adipur. This visit too was just for one day. I returned back the same day by means of a private transport service.

A pre-planned trip towards the North was already due as per schedule on April 11^th.

Meanwhile, 24^th March marked the third anniversary of ‘lock down in India’. Even a movie narrating the ‘lock down experiences/stories’ was released on that day, but it disappeared soon like it was never released. May be people were not interested to revisit those ‘horrifying sad stories and the struggle during the pandemic or lock down period’. This movie was also released on 24^th March’2023.

While we were preparing for our next tour the news of ‘corona cases surfacing again’ had started doing the rounds.

We started our journey on 11^th April for Pathankot by SVDK Exp. This was the first time that we had ‘planned’ a ‘vacation trip’ other than the visits we often took during summer vacations to visit our relatives in Maharashtra.

In this visit we were accompanied by the family of one of my friends. Examinations of their children had finished and so they wanted to travel. So they had requested us to accompany them.
This friend of mine had passed away due to cancer in 2012. He was one of my best friends whom I befriended in Kachchh. I named these three friends as my ‘3 idiots’. So this one ‘idiot’ left us too early at an young age. We were missing him a lot.

We were supposed to reach our destination i.e. Pathankot on 12^th afternoon. But on the morning of 12^th as we were still travelling there was a call from my brother-in-law from Nagpur that my father in law had left for his heavenly abode early morning. My wife was inconsolable and somehow we managed to calm her saying that we shall take a decision after reaching Pathankot or Dalhousie, where we had to stay. We were in a fix as we could not leave the other members i.e. my friend’s family alone.

After reaching Banikhet near Dalhousie from Pathankot we were informed that the funeral of my father in law had to be done the same day and it was not possible for us in any case to reach Nagpur to attend it. So finally we decided to go to Nagpur later for other rituals. The only consolation for us was that the we had met him in Feb-end and early March and our stay with him for a week at Nagpur, so the regret of not meeting him in recent past was not there..

We finished our trip to Dalhousie-Dharamshala-Amritsar and returned to Ahmedabad via Chandigarh on 17^th.

As our tour was on many things were still happening around.

My elder daughter arrived from Rajkot the next day and we all left for Nagpur on 19^th April afternoon (by air this time). After attending all rituals there I and my wife stayed back at Nagpur while our daughters returned to Vadodara early on 22^nd of April.

I with my wife travelled back by train again on 27^th from Nagpur to Vadodara.

Meanwhile my younger daughter was detected with Covid-19 and she had to be self-quarantined. Now the elder daughter had to stay with her till we arrived back. The day we reach Vadodara, our elder daughter left for Rajkot.

Now there was a family function due at Rajkot on 2^nd May. Only I could attend it, as my wife had to stay back with my younger daughter at home.

I travelled on 2^nd morning by Volvo bus, attended the function in the afternoon, and arrived back on the same evening by train …

My younger daughter recovered fully from Covid after ten days and got fully fit.

It was directed by S.K. Ojha for ‘All India Pictures, Bombay’. P. N. Arora was the producer of this movie. It had Vaijayantimala, Pradeep Kumar, Shashikala, Om Prakash, Gope, Jayant, Beghampara, Pam Avtaar, Shyam Kumar, Amar, Helen, Mirza Musharraf, Protima Devi, Badri Prasad, Parasram, Munshi Munakka, Indira Bansal, T.N. Charlie and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 25.05.1955.

“Sitaaraa-1955” has eight songs. They were written by Shakeel Badayuni and music was composed by Ghulam Mohammad.

Five songs have already been posted earlier on the blog. Today I present the sixth song from this movie which is sung by Mohd Rafi.

Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 12

Today 18^th July 2023 is the ‘eleventh remembrance’ anniversary of Rajesh Khanna.

He was born on 29^th December’1942 and he passed away on 18^th July’2012.

Much has already been written about him in the media (print & digital) and on this blog and much has been known to movie-goers and general public too.

So I am not going to repeat it here again.

In the Indian Film Industry the Rajesh Khanna era started with ‘Aradhana’ in ‘1969’. Peoples like me, who were born in the end-sixties or early seventies and after that, were too young to witness that ‘mass hysteria’ that people with first hand experience are never tired of telling us.

Even in the reality shows nowadays on TV, guest celebrities who were co-stars of Rajesh Khanna always mention it that ‘irrespective of the controversies surrounding him and the negative aspects being talked about him he was a ‘great actor’ and nobody in the film industry have got the ‘love and affection’ from people like Rajesh Khanna got .

In this episode we are going to have a look at Rajesh Khanna movies from the year ‘1985’.

The year ‘1985’ saw as many as nine Kaka movies released during it. The list of these nine movies is as given below.

Out of the ten movies mentioned above one movie ‘Baayen Haathh Kaa Khel’ was not released and it remains an unreleased movie till date.

The movie ‘Baabu’ was passed by Censor Board in ‘1983’ but it was released in theatres in ‘1985’.

During 1983 to 1985 I was staying in Akola with my grand-parents for my 11^th-12^th studying there in vocational junior college. However as I have mentioned earlier I was more on ‘cricket’ and ‘movies’ than into my studies and finally I failed in the exams (as expected by me ).

I remember I had watched ‘Zamaana’ at Akola before moving to Parli-Vaijnath as my 11th-12th was completed (or finished ). Overall it was an ‘average movie’ if I am correct.

After reaching at Parli-Vaijnath I had joined a company for job and was working there. However, there was a cricket tournament at Akola and so my friends called me back there and I went to participate in this tournament.
During this time I had watched ‘Masterji’ there at Akola and I remember how disappointed I was, as I do not like the movie at all.

Then I watched ‘Oonche Log-1985’ at Parli-Vaijnath which had good music by R.D. Burman and everything was good in the movie except Salma Agha so this movie of Kaka was another flop movie.

The company I was working with at Parli-Vaijnath had their head quarter at Nagpur. Once I was sent for some work at Head Office at Vijay Nagar (near Sadar) Nagpur. After finishing the official work I took time to watch ‘Aakhir Kyon?’ at ‘Panchsheel’ theatre at Nagpur. I remember I liked this movie and Kaka’s role in it very much.

Out of the remaining movies from the list now, I remember I watched ‘Alag Alag’ and ‘Baabu’ at Parli Vaijnath either in theatres or in video parlors. The reviews of ‘Baabu’ were very good and the movie had a good collection too in its first week. But it didn’t keep it further.

I do not get to watch the remaining movies further.

If we take a look at the list of ‘highest grossing movies’ of ‘1985’ on IMDB it mentions the following Rajesh Khanna movies as ‘Hits’ in this list.

(There are 47 movies in IMDB’s list as highest grossing movies of ‘1985’ out of which the first 31 are considered as ‘super-hits’ (?) and the rest 16 as ‘average’ movies’. I hope this analysis must be supported by factual figures (?) The topper of this list is ‘Ram Teri Gangaa Maili’ about which nobody should have doubts of-course.)

Today I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Oonche Log-1985’.

‘Oonche Log-1985’ was directed by Brij for ‘Dynamo Enterprises, Bombay’.

It was produced by Sayeeda Sadanah, R.K. Kapoor, and R. P. Sharma.

It had Rajesh Khanna, Salma Agha, Prem Chopra, Preeti Sapru, Deven Verma, and Danny Denzongpa, Pradeep Kumar, Pinchoo Kapoor with Raza Murad in special appearance.

Story and screenplay of this movie was written by Surhid Kar. Dialogues of this movie were written by Ved Rahi.
Editing of this film was done by Waman Rao (I guess he is from the famous duo of Waman Rao Bhonsle-Guru Dutt Shirali).

‘Oonche Log-1985’ was passed by Censor Board on 06.05.1985.

This movie has five songs written by Anjaan and composed to music by R.D. Burman.

Kishore Kumar and Salma Agha had given playback to the songs in this movie.

The songs of this movie are very good if not great. Out of the five songs Kishore Kumar and Salma Agha have sung three solo and one solo song respectively. And one song is a duet song sung by Kishore Kumar and Salma Agha.

Here is the brief about the story of this movie…

Rai Bahadur (Pinchoo Kapoor) is big businessman and Jagdev Singh (Rajesh Khanna) is his son. Jagdev Singh gets married to a girl (I am unable to identify the actress) who has saved his life, against his Father’s wish who wants him to marry him with his friend’s daughter. Jagdev Singh leaves his father’s home with his wife and they are expecting a child.
Raju (who grows up as Rajesh Khanna later) and his mother met an accident by a car of Thakur Vikram Singh (Pradeep Kumar). In this accident Raju loses his mother while his father had already passed away earlier.
Thakur Vikram Singh brings Raju to his home to stay with them. However Vikram Singh’s son Maan (Danny Denzongpa as a grown up Maan) hates Raju while Vikram Singh’s daughter Poonam (Salma Agha as grown up Poonam) likes Raju.
Thakur Vikram Singh sends Maan to boarding school since he do not approves his habits and style of living.

Thakur Vikram Singh has a brother Thakur Pratap Singh who is a womanizer and spends money on alcohol and racing too. He is eyeing on his brother’s property and gets him smothered. Raju watches this which Pratap Singh is unaware of.

After Thakur Vikram Singh’s death Raju’s life becomes more miserable. Pratap Singh calls Maan back to home and throws Raju in the stable where a good soul Khan (Raza Murad) has a soft corner for Raju and treats him kindly always.

Raju grows up on bad treatment and constant beating by Maan for reason one another but doesn’t want to leave the place because of Poonam. Many times Poonam helps him and Raju also saves Poonam on several occasions too (like during horse riding, snake biting etc).

Raju and Poonam love each other which Maan gets noticed and beats Raju black and blue.
To save Raju from Maan, Poonam tells Raju that she didn’t love him. Raju decides to leave but in between Pratap’s men caught Raju on the way to get him killed.
They tie Raju with ropes to horses and dragged him to the hills and thinking him dead throws him for the vultures.

However Rai Bahadur and his accomplice Mubarak Ali (Deven Verma) with their gunmen and driver, who are on hunting around that location, save Raju.
Rai Bahadur is more than happy to meet his grandson which Raju also gets to know when Rai Bahadur shows him photographs of his father.

Now Raju becomes Rai Bahadur Rajiv Singh and on the other side Maan Singh is losing financially day by day due to wine, women, horse-racing and an embezzling uncle.

Rai Bahadur Rajiv now plans for his revenge with Maan so he sends a profitable business offer to Maan through Mubarak Ali and Maan starts losing more in shares on the advice of Mubarak Ali. There is a suspicion when Maan and Pratap meets Rai Bahadur Rajiv Singh or Raju however Raju never gives them a chance and keep them suspecting and he also starts flirting with Sonia (Preeti Sapru who is fiancé of Maan Singh). (That is also to hurt Poonam more)

Finally when Raju is telling Pratap about the secret of him which he is a witness to, Maan secretly listens to their conversation and the reality of Pratap is dawned upon him. Maan plans to take revenge of his father’s killing by Pratap and took Pratap near the valley and on the gun-point he gets Pratap Singh thrown in in the ‘valley of death’.

Raju returns everything to Maan and forgives Maan for his all cruelties on him, because his father’s kindness who had given him a shelter in his childhood after he lost his mother.
While Raju leaves the ‘haveli’ Maan asks his sister Poonam to go with Raju who is her true love.

Happy birthday ‘Atul’s Song a Day’… and many happy returns of the day!!!

Yes!!! Today we celebrate the birth anniversary of this lovely blog which is celebrating its fifteenth birthday today. It was born on 19^th July’2008.

Regulars on this blog are aware that this blog is a ‘part of our life’ Ever since we got associated with it we cannot imagine out existence without it. So I need not mention how much I love this blog and how it has been a constant motivation and inspiration too for ‘movie-music lovers’ like me.

Coming straightaway to today’s post, I am continuing further with the recent ‘Mumbai meet’ memories which are still fresh and will continue to be so till the next meet happens.

Our respected Sudhir ji has already posted a detailed post day before yesterday here, so the proceedings of the day have been refreshed in the minds of the members. Sudhir ji’s article also brings the happenings of the ‘meet’ for reading pleasure of the readers associated with this blog.

I am going to add just ‘two’ more ‘notes’ where one is the ‘incidence’ prior to the ‘gang-out’ and second one is the ‘memento’ and other than this we have a song to enjoy and expressing ‘what all members’ of this blog wish about this journey of songs, music, movies, stars, artistes, and nostalgia.

When the date for the ‘Mumbai meet’ was finalized I booked my tickets for to and fro travel on 17th May’2023 and from that day I was eagerly awaiting for 2nd June. The excitement I was going through cannot be explained in words, because I was going to meet Atul ji and Sudhir ji (and Nitin ji) for the first time.

I was to board the train on 1^st June’2023 mid-night from Vadodara to Mumbai. However the ‘14701-Aravali Express had got delayed by more than an hour, so I started from my home in an auto rickshaw at around 00:15 hrs of 2nd June.

Everything was going well … the auto was going in good speed. The traffic at that time was not restricted and so the signals were through. The railway station was still around 3 to 4 kms away. I was watching around and auto was in good speed and just before I could think a moment I saw a car coming in full speed from the right side and it just crossed the bridge (of the right side) and was approaching the crossroad junction.

Before I could ask the auto driver to slowdown, it happened!!

The auto driver suddenly took a right turn to avoid the collision or the big ‘shot’.
But it hit the left side of the speeding car and turned upside down. I step down from the left side before the auto just turned upside down from my side. The left side glasses of the auto were broken the driver fallen down was picked up by people gathered around. Around forty peoples were surrounding me and the driver, and questioning us if we were ok?

I was still in state of shock and repeatedly checking my body parts ensuring that I had no injuries. My phone was on the floor, but the bag containing ‘laptop’ was ok.

The driver was an elder to my age (or it seems so) so I checked with him and he also left unhurt except some ‘scratches’ here and there.

The top of the auto got bent. People took us to a safe corner. The driver of the car that hit our auto also came to check us if were ok or need some medication. Everything was ok, the vehicle had some ‘injuries’ and a small front glass of the auto was totally broken and its hood bended. Its main front glass had a big scratch.

As I was thinking what to do, the auto driver got himself arranged and ready to continue the journey. After reaching the station I again checked with the driver and since I know his phone had also got discharged, I expressed my concern and asked him if he needed to call anybody. But he turned out to be brave soul and he told me that he would take care of it himself. On reaching the platform I was still checking myself if everything was ok and if there was any injury or bleeding.

I had shared this incidence to Guruji first (and to Peevesie’s Mom ji I think) on reaching his place, and shared it with my wife and daughter after reaching back home later.
My younger daughter takes no time to turn into ‘angry young girl’, so I was prepared for that. And soon she informed my elder daughter at Rajkot so that she can also ‘reprimand’ me suitably.

Thanks to the driver who in a split second took a right turn to avoid a severe ‘collision ‘otherwise it was going to be horizontal-vertical collision and given the speed of the car one cannot imagine what could have happen.

So, that is how ‘life moves on’ … since this was related to the ‘Mumbai meet’ travel I thought I should share it here

As usual for me I had carried a sheet and colored pens to get ‘memory of Mumbai gang-out’ on paper

I had done it previously during a ‘regulars meet’ at Bengaluru in 2016. (Readers can enjoy this post here … Ham banjaaron ki baat mat poochho ji… )

During the ‘Mumbai gang out’ same year, our respected Bharat Bhai had got recorded everybody’s video so ‘paper’ was not used there.

I asked Sudhir jee to suggest the theme for the ‘memento’ and he suggested ‘Ye hanstaa huaa kaarwaan zindagi kaa na poochho chalaa hain kidhar …’

We always, for describing the journey of this blog use words or lyrics like ‘gaaye chalaa jaa’, ‘geet gaata chal’, ‘gaataa jaaye banjaaraa’, ‘ham banjaarein’ etc etc…

What all team members sincerely wished for the blog was that ‘this should be a never ending journey’ and it should continue beyond our time too …

I came across today’s song after coming back from Mumbai when I was looking for songs on ‘kaarwaan’. I liked this song very much, and I sincerely hope that all members of our team and readers will enjoy this song…

It is from the ‘1949’ movie ‘Parda’.

“Parda-1949” was directed by A.G. Soorma for ‘K’ Pictures, Bombay.

It was produced by R.M. Vora and M. Bashir was the associate producer of this movie.

It was a social genre film.

It had Rehana, Chand, Kusum Thakkar (as per the titles of the movie it is Kusum Thakkar and not Kusum Thakur as mentioned elsewhere), Sadiq, S Nazeer, Nazeer Kashmiri, Ansari, Vazeer, Abubakar, Gulzar, Shanti Madhok, Amar and others.

Story of this movie was written by Kabil Amritsari. Dialogues of this movie were written by Rajjan, Kabil Amritsari, and M. Sarosh.

Editing of this movie was done by D.R. Barodkar and Akbar Ali.
(This movie is available online and that is why I can add some names from the crew in above information, which has not been mentioned in the previous posts on the songs with this movie. I hope to watch this movie sometime and add its story on the blog (though the audio quality of the video of this movie available online seems to be ‘not clear’).

As per HFGK this movie has thirteen songs. Out of these thirteen songs twelve songs are composed by Sharma ji (Khayyam Saab).
One song is composed by Anwar Husain and Nandram.

(However in the book ‘Khayyam-The Man – His Music’ by Vishwas Nerurkar-Bishwanath Chatterjee only four songs are mentioned as composed by Khayyam Saab and other nine songs are mentioned as composed by Anwar Hussain-Nandram).

Two lyricists share the lyrics for the songs of this movie. Swami Ramanand wrote four songs and Tanvir Naqvi wrote six songs for this movie. Lyricist’s name for three individual songs is not mentioned in HFGK Vol-II (1941-1950).

Today’s song is from the ‘1981’ movie ‘Barsaat Ki Ek Raat’. Music for this movie was composed by R.D. Burman. This movie has five songs. Four songs out of these five songs have already been posted on this blog. Thus the song under discussion is the final song from this movie. With this song, this movie will join the ‘list of movies – all songs covered’ on the blog.

I had been longing to share this song for a long time, from April 2023 onwards to be precise. That was the time when we had visited the North. During this tour I had visited places like Dalhousie, Dharamshala, and Amritsar and some places of tourist interests around Dalhousie and Dharamshala. We travelled from Vadodara to Pathankot by train. From Pathankot we had to travel by road to Banikhet (Dalhousie) where our accommodation was booked. The next day which was our first day of visiting started by travelling around Dalhousie to Kalatop Sanctuary, the forest rest house, then to Khajjiar (mini Switzerland of India) and Jagdamba temple. The lake at Khajjiar had dried up at that time so that was the only thing missing. The meadows there and the overall background was very exciting.

As per our schedule of travel for the third day the plan was to visit Chamera Lake, Chamunda Devi Temple, Chamera Dam etc and then travel the same day to Dharamshala. A few members including myself were getting motion sickness while travelling in the hills we decided to travel only to Dharamshala and nearby places. The Hotel Manager at Banikhet gave suggestions of places to visit on our request. Among the tourist spots he suggested were, ‘Kunal Pathri Mandir and Tea Garden’. However we took some other internal route and reached Dharamshala first. From there we again resumed our travel after taking lunch. Our stay at Dharamshala was actually at Naddi near McLeodGanj so we decided to cover the places of interest located nearby before going up the hill to our Hotel. This was to keep the next day exclusively for McLeodGanj. We visited the ‘State War Memorial’ in Dharamshala first. There we come to know from other tourist that the Cricket Stadium is closed for tourists (because of IPL I think). So we travelled to Kunal Pathri Mandir. From there we drove to ‘Tea Garden on the Sarah road (near Narghota)’.

Here I was again reminded of the song under discussion. Though there was no river flowing around but the picturesque Dhauladhar range hills and the lush green valley around was really a place to relax and get lost in the cool breeze there. In the recent years I have observed for myself that I was enjoying the compositions of Pancham a lot and listening to them more attentively than before. I feel that there are many of RDB’s compositions especially which take you far away from this world. Some may make you nostalgic, while some of them transport you in time either reminding you of something which you have craved for or the happy or longing moments, & somber or introspecting moments of one’s life too.

For example songs like ‘zindagi ke safar mein guzar jaate hain jo makaam’, ‘tujhse naaraaz nahin zindagi’, ‘ae ree pawan dhhoondhhe kise tera man’ … and many more. I am not mentioning all of them in this article and will take them in future article like this if possible.

The song under discussion is shot at the ‘Tagda Tea Estate’ where we can see the river ‘Teesta’ flowing in the valley. The film credits also mentions name of the river in the lyrics of this song. (Title of the movie mentions it as ‘Tagda Tea Estate’, I think it is spelled as ‘Takdah’.). Knowledgeable readers might know that the river ‘Teesta’ flows in the states of Sikkim and West Bengal and enters Bangladesh through Rangpur division. From there it joins Brahmaputra and finally empties into Bay of Bengal. It flows through the districts of Gangtok, Kalimpong, and Darjeeling etc.

Today’s song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. It is lipsynced on screen by Rakhee Gulzar (who is shown as a blind girl). We can see Prema Narayan and others in the picturisation of this wonderful song. The picturisation of this song is very beautiful and I feel that the ‘essence’ of the ‘atmosphere around’ is very well captured showing the sun rays coming through the clouds, the mountain range around, the lush green tea garden and other greenery, flowers in the garden, the temple nearby there and the river flowing in the valley.

‘Barsaat Ki Ek Raat-1981’ was produced & directed by Shakti Samanta for ‘Shakti Films’ i.e. his home production. The cast of this movie included Amitabh Bachchan, Rakhee Gulzar, Amjad Khan, Utpal Dutt, Abhi Bhattacharya, and Prema Narayan with Asit Sen, Ashim Kumar, Tarun Ghosh, Manik Dutt, Subrato Mahapatra, Surjit, Manoj, Robin, Kishore, Rinchin, Ajoy, Bunny, Probir, Nimoo, Mukunda, Narayan, Satya, Anamika and Dolly.
Sujit Kumar and Chandrashekhar had a special appearance in this movie.

Story of this movie was written by Shaktipada Rajguru. Screenplay was written by Shakti Samanta and Shaktipada Rajguru. Dialogues of this movie were written by Kamleshwar. And Editing of this movie was done by Bijoy Chowdhury where Sudhir Verma was his associate. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 06.02.1981.

Here is a brief about this movie as mentioned by our Peevesie’s Mom in her post with a song of this movie. Some part I have taken from her write-up and have added some from my side.

The movie was set in the picturesque North Bengal region- Darjeeling to be exact. Tea gardens formed the backdrop for most songs. It was a made simultaneously in Bengali as “Anusandhan” and was based on a Bengali novel. The Bengali version was more successful as compared to the Hindi one.

Suresh Babu (Abhi Bhattacharya) is an official of the tea gardens and Rajni (Rakhee) is his blind daughter.

Amjad Khan (Kaliram) played the local goonda- element, who is a law unto himself and has all the vices possible. Utpal Dutt (Sahuji), who is Amjad Khans’ father in the movie, is also the cause of the areas’ problems. He instigates the workers to strike against Abhi Bhattacharya etc. Additionally, he is involved in cross border smuggling.

Into this set up, Abhijeet (Amitabh Bachchan) walks in. Initially the locals have no clue about who he is. And he gets into a tangle with Kaliram on numerous occasions.

Abhijeet falls in love with Rajni. Kaliram tries to molest Rajni but she is saved by Abhijeet who arrests Kaliram and put him in the jail. Later Abhijeet marries Rajni and they settled down in a peaceful village. When they are expecting their first child Kaliram gets released from the jail and to ‘settle the score’ he reach to Rajni after making a fake call to Abhijeet and move him away from the house. Kaliram attacks Rajni and in the incident kills here unborn child. Finally Abhijeet gets hold of Kaliram but he is accidentally shot by his own father Sahu (Utpal Dutt) who was attempting to shoot Abhijeet.

I remember to have watched this movie then in childhood with my brothers and cousins. But have never watched it again later or in the recent years. ‘Barsaat Ki Ek Raat-1981’ has five songs written by Anand Bakshi which were composed to music by R.D. Burman. Here is the list of these songs with their respective status of posting on the blog. Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle were the playback singers for this movie.

Though this movie has some good compositions none of its songs made it to the ‘annual list of Binaca Geetmala of 1981’.

Today’s song is a ‘Qawwali’ song from the 1978 movie ‘Muqaddar’!!!

I have mentioned the following in one of earlier posts on the blog, while presenting the series on ‘Qawwalis’ ‘Part-1’.

Qawwalis were common in Hindi films when I was growing up (1968-1983). As I grew watching them in the movies in my childhood, some qawwalis left lasting impression on my impressionable mind. I have a special fascination for this genre of music. It always takes me to an entirely different ‘musical world’.

In Hindi movies qawwalis are woven with the story topic of the movie. So, we have ‘’romantic qawwalis’, ‘men vs. women’, ‘husn aur ishq’, ‘celebrating a festival’, ‘devotional qawwalis’, ‘chor-police’, ‘marriage celebration’, ‘mujrim-munsif’, ‘scoring peanuts over each other’ (Atulology), ‘nok-jhonk’, ‘teasing each other’, ‘musical competition’, and other types of qawwalis in our movies.

Or it may be a competition of poetry between two groups (read men and women mostly) where ‘qawwalis’ would perfectly fit into the plot of a movie.

In many movies Qawwalis have been used to keep the suspense intact where actors, actresses would disguise themselves and enter the villain’s den to rescue their partners/friends caught by the villain. Or sometimes the villain will kidnap close relatives of the hero or heroine in the movie and ask for a ‘hefty’ ransom. And the hero/heroine would plan a song or disguise as a ‘musical-troupe’ to enter the ‘villain’s den’ to rescue a ‘child’, ‘relatives’ or a ‘famous scientist’ or a ‘police commissioner’ who would have been kidnaped by the villain or his associates. In our movies we also have qawwalis where we see ‘lawful elements (police, CID) and the unlawful elements (goondas, or burglar, thieves)’ have a ‘qawwali muqaabla’ in “disguise”. Qawwalis programs or performance in the movie was also played to mis-lead the villain sometimes. The hero/heroine or their friends and well-wishers would sing a qawwali and simultaneously free the innocent ones or their near and dear ones kidnapped by the villain and hold in his ‘den’. Sometimes this would happen just before the climax of the movie.

Today’s Qawwali is one performance which happens in the movie before the climax. We can say that it is the beginning of the climax in the movie.

‘Muqaddar-1978’ was directed by Ravi Tandon for ‘Sneh Films, Bombay’.

It was produced by Ravi Anand. It had Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, Parikshit Sahni, Rekha, Vidya Sinha, Paintal and Amjad Khan.
Other star cast includes Mac Mohan, Yunus Parvez, Jankidas, Rajesh Behl, Bharat Kapoor, Nandita Thakur, Vikas Anand, Praveen Pal, Ranveer Raj, Chandu, Master Shaka, Master Rajeev, Baby Rani, Uma Dhawan, Sudhir, O.P. Goyal and Jayshree T.

Aruna Irani makes guest appearance in this movie. Editing of this movie was done by S.R. Kabre. Dialogues of this movie were written by Dr Balkrishna Mauj. Story and Screenplay was written by Mukul Anand. This movie had four songs (as per HFGK Vol V 1971-1980) written by Anjaan and composed by Rajesh Roshan. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Mohd Rafi, Usha Mangeshkar had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Let me take you through this movie till the end (Which I watched again on YouTube for this presentation). I have in my earlier post with this movie’s song have mentioned about its story in brief and mostly covering most of the first half of this movie. Today I will take you till the end of this movie here.

This movie ‘Muqaddar-1978’ is ‘DEDICATED TO THE TWENTY-FOUR-HOUR SOLDIERS! THE UNSUNG HEROES! THE POLICE!!

We have a strict and disciplined Police Inspector – Vijay Saxena (Sanjeev Kumar). He is very tough with ‘criminals’ and so sometimes he can deliver justice ‘on the spot’
Inspector Vijay is a bachelor and normally eats at a road side ‘dhhaabaa’ run by Abdul Bhai (Yunus Parvez). One day Vijay reach the ‘dhhaabaa’ and orders the food for him. At the same time one old woman beggar comes there and asks for food. Vijay asks Abdul Bhai to provide her food and the expenses will be borne by him.
However when the ‘bhikhari buddhiya’ is crossing the road a car hits her and run away … Inspector Vijay follows the car, and as usual taking ‘Qaanoon’ in his hands ‘beats the ‘badmaash(s)’ … but then he has to face his senior Police Commissioner ( Jairaj).

Annoyed by his action the commissioner of Police Jairaj (played by Jairaj) transfers him to the area of ‘Dhaaraavi’ where the local goons and the anti-social elements are highly active and need a ‘better treatment from the Police’ so that they are under control.
So, our Inspector is now in Dharavi, and he already has a sincere and dedicated assistant there – Patil (Bharat Kapoor) … who eventually sacrifices his life since he has been asked that ‘is mujrim pe goli mat chalana’ … but mujrim fires on him …

In Dharavi we have Parishit Sahni as a ‘labour leader’ working in a ‘kapada mill’ of Sampat Seth (Amjad Khan). Sampat Seth is more interested in ‘smuggling’ to become the ‘wealthiest smuggler’. Sampat Seth has a sister Seema (Rekha) – who is interested in social work and has a soft corner towards labors in the ‘basti’. We have Ramu Dada (Shashi Kapoor) as a ‘spoiled’ younger brother of Amar Babu (Parikshit Sahni). Vidya Sinha plays Savitri (wife of Parikshit Sahni), Shashi’s Bhabhi and Rekha’s friend. Jimmy (Paintal) is Shashi’s lieutenant and accompanies him whenever he is driving truck and enjoying ‘mujaras’ after the day’s hard work 
After reaching ‘Dhaaraavi’ Inspector Vijay destroys many ‘daaru and matke ka addaas’ and arrests many goons and local ‘daadas’ and warns them of dire consequences if they do not stop doing illegal & anti-social activities. In this mission his trusted assistant Patil ably supports him with required information and whereabouts of the criminals ‘operating locations’.

In the ‘mill’, workers are expecting ‘bonus’ as the ‘Dushehra festival’ is approaching.
Sampat Seth declares bonus to workers as he wants them to work on ‘Dushehre ki Chhutti’, and behind the holiday working he can hide the ‘smugglers’ meet’ so that no one doubts …Parikshit Sahni is first reluctant, but then agrees to convince the workers to work on the ‘festival holiday’.

There is a beggar in the neighbourhood Chandu (Chandu) – deaf and dumb – always asking for money from Amar Babu (Parikshit Sahni). But on Amar Babu’s advice he gives up begging and from the money given by Amar Babu is now making pictures by Rangoli Powder of ‘Ganesh, Sai Baba’, and ‘Shri Ram’on the road side. He has a crucial role in the movie as we progress further.
Meanwhile Inspector Vijay gets Ramu Dada and Jimmy into lock-up to interrogate them, but release them soon so as to keep track of them and their contacts secretly.

However on the day of ‘Dushehra ’celebrations as the Ravana’s effigy is set to fire by the arrows of Amar Babu and Ramu Dada, enters our Inspector Vijay Saxena for checking of the ‘truck’ driven by Ramu Dada from Goa suspecting that it contains smuggled items in it But he do not find anything objectionable there.

It so happens that one day Amar Babu notices some unusual truck movements after closing hours at the factory so he asks Sudhir (Sudhir) the loading Inspector about it. But Sudhir tells him that there is no activity after closing hours at the factory. However, on the day of ‘Diwali’ Amar Babu follows them and caught them loading the smuggled items (illicit liquor) into the trucks. Sudhir and his accomplice Rajesh (Rajesh Behl) and Amar Babu have arguments. Thinking of to bring this illegal activity to the notice of the owner and unaware that it is done only at the behest of him, Amar Babu reaches to the owner’s house. Where Sampat Seth tries to bribe him and Amar Babu gets to know all about the game. He lefts the place but is followed by the henchmen of Sampat Seth and is killed before he can disclose this secret to anyone. The deaf and dumb Chandu has seen these two persons killing Amar Babu.

(There is a sub-plot of Shehnaaz Bai (Aruna Irani). Ramu Dada had saved her earlier from goons and is her ‘raakhi brother’ now. So, when Ramu Dada leaves his Bhaiyya’s home he is staying at Shehnaaz Bai’s house which creates ‘galatfahmii’ in the mind of Seema. However, Shehnaaz Bai clarifies and told the ‘asliyat’ to Seema when Seema reach her place to request Ramu to return to his home.)

Seema persuades Ramu Dada to return back to his home. On the day of Diwali Ramu Dada buys some gifts for his bhaiyya-bhaabhi and return back to his home only to find his elder brother’s body lying to be taken for final rites.
Soon Ramu Dada and his accomplice Jimmy sets out to search for the killers, Chandu intercepted them and draw the sketches of the killers, where Jimmy identifies one of them i.e. Sudhir.
Ramu Dada bangs into Sudhir’s place and gets hold of him but Rajesh escapes. Ramu and Sudhir have fight. During the fight Sudhir dies (It is another fact that the real reason of his death comes to know later) and Ramu Dada is arrested by Police and sent behind the bars.
Police Inspector is also looking into the case of Amar Babu and they reach Chandu but Girdhari Lal the clever confidante of Sampat Seth shoots Chandu.
Chandu is dead but Police keeps him in the hospital under treatment to reach the real culprits. Girdhari Lal falls in the trap and get into the hospital to kill Chandu where Police Inspector is already hiding there to catch him. But Mac Mohan injects himself and dies without disclosing the name of the Boss. His other accomplices sitting outside the room try to run but Police chase them and in this chase one of the goons shoots Patil.
Police found some photographs from Girdhari Lal’s house where in one picture Sampat Seth, Sudhir, and Girdhari Lal are seen together. Inspector Vijay vows …
“Main Patil ki Qurbaani bekaar nahin jaane doongaa… Policewaalon ka khoon itnaa sastaa nahin hain Sampat Seth.”

Meanwhile the medical report of Sudhir reveals that he died due to drinking of poisonous liquor and not by the beating of Ramu Dada. Inspector Vijay thanks the doctor and is on the way to convey this good news to Ramu Dada. But Ramu Dada plans to run away from the jail and succeeds. One police officer tries to shoot him but Inspector stops him from doing so. Inspector is suspended on this act but now he knows the reality and wants to help Ramu Dada.
Ramu Dada gets to know from Lala that Sudhir, Rajesh, Girdhari Lal are all of Sampat Seth’s ‘aadmis’ so he goes to Sampat Seth’s bungalow where Seema tells him that her brother has gone to Goa. Sampat Seth has arranged a big get-together of all smugglers where ‘Tiger’ (Smuggler) will also be attending and there will be party and music with a ‘Qawwali ki Raat’ 

Inspector Vijay also follows to Goa and Abdul Bhai helps him in locating Sampat Seth’s ‘thhikaanaa’ and told him that it is difficult to enter there from the main gate and suggests that there is back door way but it is difficult. “Difficult but not impossible …” (Inspector Vijay)!!
Inspector Vijay swims the sea shores and the fights the big rocks  to reach the ‘addaa’ of Sampat Seth. On the way he meets Ramu Dada. After a brief scuffle they get together to ‘treat’ Sampat Seth. Meanwhile Sampat Seth kidnaps Ramu’s bhaabhi and has kept her at the ‘addaa’ for his entertainment.

Before the climax, as was customary in those years in the films, we have ‘qawwali’ where our heroes have disguised themselves, which obviously gets disclosed to Sampat before the performance ends. After usual final twists & turns Samat Seth gets his reward and dies.
Inspector Vijay submits his resignation to the commissioner but he torns it two pieces.
“Kal se tumhaari duty bhiwandi police station mein lagaayi gayi hai… wahaan ke kuchh gunde logon ko bahot pareshaan kar rahe hain …report for duty tomorrow”… Inspector Vijay salutes the commissioner …

Ramu Dada and Seema are together and his bhaabhi is happy. The mill workers have installed a bust of Amar Babu in the mill compound and the movie ends there. Cast of the movie and other titles gets rolling on screen and in the background we have the song playing…“Sooraj se aankhen milaa…Taaron ko o dharti pe laa aa” …

So that is all from one of those movies from the seventies – they were just magic (for us who were growing ) …

(After all is done and dusted, one question comes to mind that why Inspector Vijay has to swim across the seashore, hang on the rope on the wall to have a back door entry at Sampat Seth’s ‘addaa’. As all the smugglers attending the ‘meet’ must have come travelling from the city only. Moreover, the Inspector has to disguise himself to reach there. So, he could have easily got entry inside from the main gate. May be the director had some other thoughts??? )

We can also see Amjad Khan, Vidya Sinha and many others in the picturisation of this song. Lyrics of the song are by Anjaan. He has penned very interesting lyrics for the given situation. (A Tribute to Kishore Kumar – The Versatile Genius)

Today (13 October 2023) we pay our tributes to the ‘versatile genius’ Kishore Kumar (04.08.1929 – 13.10.1987) on his thirty-sixth ‘Remembrance Anniversary’.

Much has already been written about Kishore Kumar in the media and on this blog too. So I am not going to repeat the same today. But I would like to mention that Kishore Kumar will be discussed till HFM exists on this planet. Much will be written about him till the HFM exists on this planet. People of future generations will keep coming across his songs and his biography and his acting and musical skills and his writing skills and his directing skills and … we can go on adding about this multifaceted personality, and a simple yet sometimes eccentric human being.One needs to into depth into his life to understand Kishore Kumar fully. So people will keep discoving facts about him.

On this occasion I am presenting a lesser heard song sung by Kishore Kumar. I became aware of this song a little while ago. This song is from the ‘1988’ movie ‘Aakhri Muqaabla’. I was unaware about this movie till recently. I had never listened to this song in the past. I became aware of this song thanks to the book – ‘When Ardh Satya met Himmatwaala- The many lives of 1980s’ Bombay Cinema’ by Avijit Ghosh which I added to my library recently. The author mentions this song under ‘super songs that never hit the charts’ (from the eighties). On the musical front the decade of ‘eighties’ was ruled by ‘Bappi Lahiri’ music and of many songs that people would like to forget about, but there was also ‘unforgetteble’ music created during this decade and today’s song is one such song. Listening to the today’s song also reminds me of a composition from the movie ‘Sitamgar-1985’ which was composed by R.D. Burman. However the today’s song is composed by Usha Khanna. The singer for the both songs is Kishore Kumar.

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Aakhiri Muqaabla’ (passed by Censor Board on 19.12.1988).

‘Aakhiri Muqaabla’ was directed by Sudesh Chandra Issar for ‘Lily Films, Bombay’. It was produced by Dr D.D. Singh and Mrs Baljinder Kaur. The cast of this movie included Shashi Kapoor, Suresh Oberoi, Rajan Sippy, Divya Rana, Padmini Kapila, Puneet Issar, Asha Sachdev, Paintal, Shammi, Dev Kumar, Brahmachari, Pradeep Kumar, Chandrashekhar, Junior Mehmood, Chand Usmani, Mac Mohan, Nandita Thakur, Ram Mohan, Bob Christo, Tej Sapru, Shivraj, Dharmesh Tiwari, Vyjanti, Jerry, Asha Sharma and others. This movie introduced D.D. Singh and Palaaki Singh. And the movie had Dharmendra in an ‘above all-special appearance’.

Story of this movie was written by Jag Mohan Singh. Screenplay was by Surinder Kaul and Dialogues were written by Raja Bedi. Editing of this film was done by Padmakar Nirbhavane.
There were thrree lyricists in this movie. They are Gauhar Kanpuri, Jag Mohan Singh and Indeevar. Kishore Kumar (who had passed away in 1987), Asha Bhonsle and Suresh Wadkar had given their voices to the songs in this movie. Music for this movie was composed by Usha Khanna. This movie has total three songs including the multi-part song under discussion. However the lyricistwise breakupfor the individual songs is not known. An Audio link of the song mentions the lyricist name as Indeevar for this song but it needs to be confirmed. The link mentions Usha Khanna’s voice in the duet version, but her name does not appear in the title of this movie under the list of singers for this movie.

This song is available in three parts. The first part is played in background and video of this song is available. This song is played when the titles are rolling and we can see Shashi Kapoor as a Doctor and others on the screen. The video of the second part could not be found as of now. The third part is played at the end of the movie in the background. Here we can see Shashi Kapoor, Rajan Sippy, Padmini Kapila, and Divya Rana on the screen. Also seen is Dharmendra smiling as ‘all ends well’

(Debutant Movie – Bedard-1982 – Lyricist – Naqsh Lyallpuri-1)

Today’s song is a ‘gem’ of song which remained a lesser heard and lesser known song, which might be because it is from a movie few people are aware of. The title of the film is ‘Bedard’ which seems to be an obscure movie of its time. I like this song very much for its poetic value and the overall composition. it is sung by Bhupinder Singh and the song is composed by Kanti Kiran.

Hardly any information is available about the music composer Kanti Kiran, except that he had also composed music for the Hindi movie ‘Jhoom Uthhaa Aakaash-1973’. I had shared a few songs from this movie earlier here on the blog and liked them too.

Lyricist for the song is Naqsh Lyallpuri (24.02.1928-22.01.2017). He is well known for penning many unforgetteble songs. He was born as Jaswant Rai in Lyallpur (now in Pakistan) and later his family migrated to India after partition. When he started writing poetry he took his pen name as Naqsh and since he belonged to Lyallpur (now known as Faisalabad in Pakistan) it got added as ‘suffix’ to his pen name as was customary during those times.

The life story of Naqsh Lyallpuri can be considered a perfect example of how destiny and luck plays its role in one’s life to help become a person successful as well and allow him to follow one’s passion and do things what one like to do in his life.

He had to struggle a lot to achieve his success. Naqsh’s father was an Engineer by profession in Lyallpur. However his job was a transferrable job. So they had to spend few years in Rawalpindi before coming back to Lyallpur again. Naqsh’s father wanted him to be an Engineer while Naqsh’s Uncle who was a Doctor wanted him to be a Doctor. However Naqsh himself was interested in literature and poetry. His teacher Ramlal spotted the literary talent in him and advised him to continue learning literature. Naqsh also learned Urdu, Persian and Arabic from his teacher. At home they generally used Urdu or Hindi. Naqsh was later shifted to a hostel in Lahore where he found his way to the ‘adabee mehfils’ (meeting of littérateurs’) where budding poets and established poets met regularly and presented their works. Naqsh got an opportunity to present his poetry here in around ‘1945’ when he was seventeen years old. Comments and advices from the seniors there helped him to improve further.

After partition of the country the family of Naqsh Lyallpuri came to Lucknow. From here started the struggle for the family to earn and sustain living. Naqsh was under pressure to join some job and start earning. Since he was not getting any suitable opportunities in Lucknow he decided to go to Bombay. He left Lucknow without telling his family members, with only two rupees in his pocket, and reached Bombay. He had a ‘pen-friend’ Pradeep Naiyyar in Bombay whom he thought of meeting in order to seek his help for some job. However, when he reached his friend’s place he found that he had gone out of station to Poona for two weeks. Naqsh was on the road looking for some shelter as he had already spent the money he had. He saw one Sardar ji near the place, whom he enquired with about some ‘shelter’ near-by. This Sardar ji helped him to get accommodation in Sarai – Gurudwara Matunga. The Sardarji also told him that he could stay at the Gurudwara for eight days with food two times in the langar. At the Gurudwara another generous Sardar ji who was from Ludhiana, helped him with some money when the later was returning back to Punjab.

Once it so happened that Naqsh set out to have a ‘paan’ after his meal at a ‘paan shop’ near ‘Citylight cinema’. At the ‘paan shop’a gentleman alighted from a car. It turned out that he was Deepak Ashaa friend of Naqsh from his Lahore days. He had become a film actor in Bombay. Deepak Asha (also known as film director Dharam Kumar who directed ‘Ghamand-1955’, etc.) took Naqsh to his home in Bombay and arranged for his stay and food in Bombay.

Naqsh got his first job in Bombay in the Post & Telegraph department at Mandvi post office in Bombay.

Naqsh never thought of writing for films. He came to Bombay in 1951 to get whatever work he could get to have a decent living. In his P&T job his job was to allocate staff based on requirement. People coming in his contacts loved him since he was a poet. This first job gave him earning of Rs.122.00 to 125.00 per month. However he quit his job as the job was not giving his the creative satisfaction that he craved for.

By this time he had earned some reputation as a’ poet-writer’ among his contacts who used to visit him regularly. Some of them suggested him to write a ‘play’ which they would arrange to stage. The title of this play was ‘Tadap’. Ram Mohan who was a well-known actor then was the lead actor of this play. Naqsh had also written five songs for this play. Ram Mohan was quite impressed with his works and he introduced Naqsh Lyallpuri to director Jagdish Sethi who was the director of the movie ‘Jaggu-1952’. Thus Naqsh Lyallpuri got his entry into the ‘Hindi Film World’.

After writing some songs for stunt films (which Naqsh was reluctant earlier, as he want to write for ‘social films’ only) he finally ‘rose to fame’ with the song ‘main to har mod par’ from the movie ‘Chetna-1970’. In between Naqsh Lyallpuri also wrote songs for many Punjabi films. In Hindi films most of his collaborations were with music director Sapan-Jagmohan, Jaidev and Khayyam.

We will be exploring his filmography and his collaborations with other music directors in future posts under this series. We will also discuss his most popular songs and songs that remained lesser known but had his ‘trademark’ ‘soft, tender and meaningful’ poetry in them.

Let us start this journey of ‘songs’ written by Naqsh Lyallpuri with a song from the movie ‘Bedard-1982’ in this post.

“Bedard-1982” (passed by Censor Board on 29.06.1982) was directed by Rajdeep for ‘R.K. International, Bombay’. It was jointly produced by Qadeer Khan & Rajdeep. The director Rajdeep had also written Story, screenplay and dialogues of this movie. He had also done the editing of this movie. The cast of this movie included Neeta Mehta, Vikram, Rajdeep, Rehana Sultana, Kanan Kaushal, Master Shiboo, Bharat Bhushan, Jairaj, B.M. Vyas, Kamalakar Date, Padmashree, Ajay Chaddha, Ashok Nag, Mohan Choti, Montu, Baldev Kalsi, Amul Sen, Yunus Bihari, Javed Khan, Sonu, Baby Haseena, Baby Anita, Dilip, Jabbar, Pushpa Singh, Rashid, Tuntun and others.
‘Bedard-1982’ has three songs written by Naqsh Lyallpuri and composed to music by Kanti Kiran. Bhupinder Singh and Asha Bhonsle had given their voices to the songs in this movie where Bhupinder Singh has one solo (with chorus) and Asha Bhonsle has sung two solo songs for this movie.

The director of this movie Rajdeep who also acted in this movie seems to be a multifaceted personality who has done acting, lyrics writing, direction, producing films and writing for Hindi Films. As a director he has the following movies to his credit.

3) Hazaar Haath – 1978
4) Sister – 1980
5) Bedard – 1982

I could not find more information about director the Rajdeep (like his biographical information etc) except that he has done acting, writing, singing in films other than direction of films. He has been a producer of few movies too.

Coming to the movie ‘Bedard-1982’, I guess that this movie is not available online. I had never watched this movie earlier and I was not aware of this movie till recently. ‘Cinemaazi’ mentions the story of this movie in brief here which they mention has been taken from the ‘official press booklet’ of this movie. The story of the movie is of ‘love and sacrifice’. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and picturisation of its songs.

The song being discussed in this article is from the movie ‘Golden Eyes-1968’. It was a movie belonging to the genre of ‘spy thriller’. I was under the impression that ‘jasoosee’ movie is a ‘detective’ movie or ‘detective’ and ‘spy’ are same, but now I have learnt that there is a difference in their purpose and ‘modus operandi’.:) I think ‘spying’ is more correct word here. I had always liked to watch movies in this genre. In my childhood days I used to read and like the detective stories of ‘Inspector Dhananjay’ written by Baburao Arnalkar very much. (Interested readers can read more about him in this article written by our respected In-house Encyclopedia Shri Arunkumar ji on the blog.

If one goes through the various ‘genre’ of movies for Hindi films (mentioned in the Geet Kosh Vol-I to VI i.e. 1931 to 1985) the following list of ‘genres’ emerges from which movies are made, and that are mentioned for each film in HFGK. (There also some cases where the ‘genre’ for the movie is not mentioned. But such cases are very rare and for very few movies only.) Out of these, maximum movies, more than 75% movies or more, say -75% to 85%- movies are in the ‘genre’ of ‘सामाजिक’ or ‘social drama’ kind of movie.

Here is the list of all ‘genres’ of Hindi movies. (I have tried to note all different kind of ‘genres’ mentioned in the Geet Kosh for films from 1931-1985. Still, I apologise if I have missed any to include in the list below).

There are some exceptions also where the movies are mentioned with a ‘joint genre’ e.g. सामाजिक-स्टंट – Jawaahir-E-Hind-1937, स्टंट-रहस्यप्रधान – Naujawaan-1937. Also in the decade of 1931-1940 a movie titled ‘Heer Ranjha (alias ‘Hoor-e-Punjaab’)-1932- is mentioned from the ‘genre’ ‘आध्यात्मक –Spiritual(?) which I guess is a printing mistake and it should be ‘आख्यात्मक’ ‘genre’ which is mentioned with other movies with the same title.

(‘Genres’ for very few movies are not mentioned, which may be because of unavailability of their details or any other reason, e.g. ‘Do Dulhe-1955’, ‘Night In London-1967’, etc.)

A film producer in India (or an applicant whoever it is) has to mention the ‘Kind of film/Genre’ in the application form, while applying for certificate from the ‘Central Board of Film Certification in India’. The details of this application and its guidelines are available on the website of CBFC and ‘cinepramaan’. However, while going through the guidelines I noted one thing which I find strange is that for the ‘kind of film/genre’ it is mentioned that ‘it should be in accordance with the duration of the film’, but for example in the ‘demo’ it mentions the ‘genre’ (i.e. crime) only. So I guess that the ‘duration of the film’ has no role for this particular field there.

If one goes through the ‘genres’ for films produced in initial decades i.e. 1931-1951 one can notice that majority of movies of those days fell under ‘social’, ‘costume drama’, ‘fictional’, ‘fantasy’, ‘stunt’, ‘mythological’, ‘devotional’ etc. This trend continued till 1970 and even later. However movies in the ‘genre’ of ‘fantasy’, ‘costume drama’ got reduced over the years. Movies in the ‘genre’ of ‘suspense thriller’ were also introduced. And movies in the ‘spy genres’ were made only in the decade of 1961-1970. Movies with ‘spy stories’ might have been produced in later years also, but they were mentioned under other ‘genres’. Gradually the different ‘genres’ merged into ‘social’ movies as can be seen from movies made in 1971-1985. For example a title ‘Paataal Bhairavi-1952’ was a ‘fantasy movie’, but movie with the same title made in 1985 was made in the ‘genre’ of ‘social’ movie. (I hope to come with more detailed statistics on this in a future post on the blog).

Let us come back to the ‘genre’ of today’s movie i.e. ‘Spy film’. In the decade of the sixties the first movie based on the character of James Bond created by Ian Fleming was released in ‘1962’ . It was ‘Dr No’ featuring Sean Connery as James Bond or Secret Agent 007. ‘Farz-1967’ is considered as the first Hindi movie inspired by the character of James Bond and it was later followed by many such movies. However if one goes through the ‘genre’ of the movie, ‘Farz’ is mentioned in Geet Kosh as a ‘Social’ movie. (This is the same case for other movies by the same director i.e. Ravikant Nagaich where movies based on ‘spy stories’ have been categorized under the same ‘genre’ i.e. ‘social movie’ (e.g. ‘Keemat-1973’, ‘The Gold Medal-1975’, ‘Surakshaa-1979’, ‘Wardaat-1981’ etc).

The first movie in the ‘genre’ of ‘जासूसी’ फिल्म to appear in the Geet Kosh is ‘Mera Saaya-1966’. I think ‘detective film’ should be the right word for this ‘genre’ going by the story of this movie, or should it be ‘suspense thriller’?, or may be ‘rahasya pradhaan chitra’ I guess.

The next movie coming in this genre chronologically is ‘Aankhen-1968’ which is a ‘spy thriller’ and this movie perfectly fits in for this genre. It is also one of my favorite movies from this ‘genre’. I might have watched many movies from this ‘spy-stories’ but I particularly remember ‘Aankhen-1968’ and like it very much. In the later years another ‘spy’ movie which I liked is ‘The Hero-The Love Story of a Spy-2003’. And I think the ‘genre’ of this movie was correctly mentioned as ‘Spy Thriller’.

In the decade of ‘sixties’ there were two more ‘jaasoosi movies’ i.e. ‘Golden Eyes-1968’ and ‘Spy in Rome-1968’. One more movie ‘Khilaadi-1968’ is said to have a ‘spy story’ but it is covered under the ‘genre’ of ‘social’ movie. Moving forward to the decade of ‘seventies’ there are no movies especially under this genre ‘spy thriller’ or ‘jaasoosi movies’ though movies may have ‘spy’ content in their stories. Some examples have already been given above. There are more such examples. A ‘spy movie’ ‘Agent Vinod-1977’ is covered under the ‘genre’ of ‘suspense/mystery’-रहस्य प्रधान. The movie ‘Bond-303-1985’ was categorized as ‘Social movie’.

We can find many movies having ‘spy’ content which got covered under the ‘genre’ of either ‘stunt’, ‘action’, ‘crime’ or ‘suspense/mystery’ or simply as ‘social movies’:) . And same thing can also be noted for films produced outside India too. (I am not going in the details for such movies for now because I am not sure if the information about the ‘genre’ of the movies is mentioned correctly in the online information i.e. it is the same for which the movie was officially certified for).

The ‘spy’ stories got revived during the recent years in our country with movies like ‘Agent Vinod-2012’ and ‘Ek Tha Tiger-2012’ and subsequently we have ‘created’ our own ‘spy universe’ now (The YRF spy universe’). And our ‘spy-agents’ have become stronger now as they can even save our ‘neighboring country’s PM too’ (‘Tiger-3 ). But these movies have been categorized under the ‘genre’ of ‘Action/Drama/Thriller’ and like that, if the online sources which mentioned them are correct.

The plot of such ‘spy’ movies have been on similar lines where there is some ‘secret formula’ or ‘sensitive secret documents/map’ etc which ‘greedy anti-nationals’ are looking to sell it to an ‘enemy country’ or an ‘enemy country’ trying to get the formula to use for their own benefit. Or the enemy-nation agents are planning to and kidnap ‘scientists’ of our country, and demand ‘some important secrets or formula or demand to release their terrorists friends in our custody etc.

‘Golden Eyes-1968’ has a similar plot where two groups are vying for a ‘secret formula’ of ‘making of a bomb from helium gas’ which is developed by Indian Scientists. This formula has been saved in ‘microfilms’ in two parts and getting those both parts is the sole agenda of two different groups. Do they succeed in getting this or the ‘Secret Agent 007’ prevents them is what is to be watched in this ‘entertaining movie’. The movie is now available on online platform but sadly the ‘quality of print and the audio of the film’ is very poor’ which takes off all the ‘thrill’ of watching it.

“Golden Eyes” (alias ‘Secret Agent 077’) was directed by Kamal Sharma for ‘Madan Chitra, Bombay’. It was produced by Ramkumar Bohra. It had Mumtaz, Shailesh Kumar (as Secret Agent 007), Helen, Ram Kumar, Ravi Kumar, B.M. Vyas, Shabnam, Madhumati, Asit Sen, Ulhas, Rani, Rajan Haksar, Saudagar Singh, Samson, Rajan Kapoor, Ramesh Kant, Shaikh, Jeevankala, Khurshid, Ratan Gaurang, Nazir Kashmiri, H. Prakash, Amrit Rana, Vijaylakshami, Narbada Shankar, Musha Chang, Maqbool, Bhaskar, Ganesh, Bashir, Arvind, Abu Baker, Juliyan, Sayyad, Rachna, Rita, Baby Camne, Mohammedali, Steelman, Sattar Master and others. Story and dialogues of this movie was written by H.M. Singh and screenplay was written by Shreeram Bohra. Editing of this movie was done by S.R. Sawant.

This movie has six songs which all were written by Shewan Rizvi and music for this movie was composed by Baldev Nath or B.N. Bali. The playback for the songs in this movie is given by Asha Bhonsle, Mahendra Kapoor, Usha Balsawar and Kamal Barot.

The song under discussion is sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised on Helen. Shailesh Kumar is also seen in the picturisation. Lyrics are by Shewan Rizvi and music is composed by B.N. Bali.

The lyric contains ‘arabic words’ like ‘anta habibi’ and ‘anta rafiqui’ for which the online sources mention the meaning as ‘my beloved’ for ‘anta habibi’. I am aware of the words ‘habib’, ‘rafiq’ and ‘rafiqui’ which mean a beloved, a friend and friendship respectively. However, I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this or any valuable information they can add please.

Today 24^th December’2023 is the ninety-ninth birth anniversary of the legendary singer – ‘divine voice’ – Mohd Rafi. He was born on 24^th December’1923 and he passed away on 31^st July’1980.

We are all aware of Mohd Rafi as a ‘great singer’ and a ‘great human being’. Much has already been written about him on this blog and in print and digital media. So I will not repeat the same again today in this article here.

From my side as a tribute to Mohd Rafi I am presenting this song which was requested by our dear Dr Pradeep Shetty ji and it is lying with us for several months. Doctor Saab was supposed to present this song here, but he couldn’t do it due to some reasons.

As per our blog statistics the total song tally of Mohd Rafi is mentioned as ‘4846’ songs. We have so far covered 3293 songs on the blog out of these 4846 songs. It means we still have 1553 songs yet to be posted on the blog. I am not aware whether all the remaining songs are available. It is possible that we may have lost some songs or they may not be available currently. There are many non-film songs sung by him as well. So, it is still a long way to go to have all Rafi Saab songs (from films at least) on this wonderful blog.

The movie of the song under discussion, viz. “Maa Behan Aur Beewee-1973” was directed by Harbans Kumar for ‘Global Films, Bombay’. It had Kabir Bedi, Prema Narayan, Raj Kishore, Jankidas, Sushma, Renu, Samar Deep, Tuntun, Jugal Kishore, Kaushal Raj, Chanda, Moolchand, Eliot Sampson, James Bond, Narmada Shankar, Fatima Rizvi, Raj Kaul, Feroza Damaniya, Thakur Chhabda, Rajesh Mekin, Hangama, Fazal Khan, Master Shaka, Shetty and others. David, Anjana Mumtaz and Tabassum had a special appearance in this movie.

I have not watched this movie or read about it, so I can’t say anything about today’s movie in this article. This song is composed by Sharda and lyrics are written by Qamar Jalalabadi-Vedpal Verma. Geet Kosh has mentioned the name of these two lyricists for all the songs of this movie. From my side I have tried to compile the list of movies where music is composed by Sharda and the number of Rafi songs therein. I would like to present this list as given below. The today’s movie was the first movie of Singer Sharda (1933-2023) as a ‘music-director’.

From the above table we can see that the voice of Mohd Rafi featured in 17 songs out of 49 songs composed by Singer-Composer Sharda.
Mohd Rafi was nominated for the ‘Best Playback Singer –Male’ for this song sung by him. (That year, it was Mahendra Kapoor who won this award for ‘Roti Kapada Aur Makaan’).

This song (both version) is played in the background. We can see Kabir Bedi, Prema Narayan and two others (whom I unable to identify) present in the picturisation of this song. While in the picturisation of the female version of this song we can see Anjana Mumtaz, Kabir Bedi and Prema Narayan in the present there.

The lyrics of this song are quite meaningful and it is a nice song to listen to. One song from this movie “Maa Behan Beewee” has been posted on the blog earlier. This song is the second song from this movie to be presented on this blog.

(“The Musical Mehtas” – Neena Rajendra Mehta)

In my journey of listening of music and collection of cassettes there was a phase in 1986 when I was introduced to ghazals. I may have been listening ghazals from films but then I was not aware more about this genre and also of the many non-film ghazals already making their foray in the music industry. It was because of my boss who was from Punjab and a great admirer of ghazals that I got to listen to the so many gems from this genre. I was staying at Parli Vaijnath then. It would be appropriate here that I reproduce some part of the text (edited) which I had written earlier in my post for the song “Sarakti Jaaye Hai Rukh Se Naqaab Aahista Aahista” here on the blog which will give a background for today’s article too.

My first introduction to ghazals came about in 1986. Before that it was all songs, sad songs or slow songs for me. In 1985-86 I had taken up a job and my boss was a Punjabi from Chandigarh. He was fond of ghazals and I was fond of old Hindi film songs. My boss had with him a good collection of audio cassettes of ghazals by Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali, Jagjit Singh and others. I got to listen to ghazals of various singers like Anup Jalota, Pankaj Udhas, Ashok Khosla, Chandan Das, Talat Aziz, Ghulam Ali, Mehdi Hassan and Jagjit Singh from my boss’s collection. Every new release then was awaited eagerly and grabbed as early as possible. It was all a new experience for me then.

There was one more name which was a ‘couple’ – singers of ghazals, of which the cassette was in my boss’s collection. I am sure it was. In between all these years I had forgotten this name but I am sure the hardcore ghazal listeners would never forget it. Few months back I came across today’s song and it reminded me of the ghazal listening era in my life which gradually had taken a backseat since long and faded out after emergence of internet and YouTube. Nowadays though we listen to lot of music it is not like those days when we used to play ghazals on cassettes and listen to them for long hours.

In September 1988 I was transferred to Koradi Site (near Nagpur) from Parli Vaijnath and from Koradi I was transferred to Kota-Rajasthan in November 1988 end. I stayed at Kota till 14^th August 1996. During my stay at Kota I had made many friends and it was our routine for many years to enjoy evenings over drinks, food and listening to ghazals. The majority of the music albums I had in my collection then were of Jagjit Singh-Chitra Singh. But before Jagjit Singh and Chitra, there was another ‘singer couple’ who pioneered the ‘ghazal singing by a couple’. They were known as Musical Mehtas. Yes, I am talking about Neena and Rajendra Mehta.

The era of Rajendra Mehta (1934 – 03.11.2019) and Neena Mehta (12.04.1942 – 26.04.2014) dates back to the time when I was yet to born. They started their journey of singing together in 1966-67. (I was born in 1968). Rajendra Mehta came from a Punjabi Sikh family of Lahore. After partition they came to India as refugees, and finally got settled at Lucknow around 1950. The young Rajendra Mehta was fond of singing, reading Urdu poetry and listening to poetry of celebrated poets. At Lucknow Rajendra got conducive environment of Urdu, the language he loved, and the music around. He also got a singing friend Bhushan Mehta who was in his neighborhood. In 1952 he got to listen to Talat Mahmood and Sudha Malhotra in Lucknow during their performance there. Inspired by all these he joined the Morris College of Music (now known as Bhatkhande College of Music/Bhatkhande Music Institute). Simultaneously he took a job in LIC along with studies, which was necessary to stay afloat. During his stay at Lucknow he participated in school, college and inter university competitions. He also became the ‘गंडा बंद शागिर्द’ of Yunus Malik there. Later he got transferred to Bombay in 1960. Before that he had been to Bombay in 1956-57 to participate in the Murphy Metro Contest for singers, where Mahendra Kapoor and Aarti Mukherjee were the winners of the contest then. Talat Mahmood whom he admired as complete singer was his idol. He revered Talat Mahmood like a father figure.

It was in Bombay at All India Radio where he meet Neena in 1963 and from there onward started their beautiful friendship which turned into relationship in 1966 (Dushehra) when their parents approved for their marital alliance.

Earlier their parents were reluctant to accept their relationship as both of them came from a different castes and family status. While Rajendra came from a middle-class Punjabi family, Neena was from a rich Gujarati family. Till their parents approval both of them keep meeting secretly. They got married in 1967-January. It was immediate after their engagement that the famous impresario Brij Narayan, who also the head of the Sur Singaar Sansad advised them to sing and perform together. Ghazal singing by a couple was not in custom till then and initially the Mehtas were criticized for this. They start with their first joint performance at the Shanmukhanand Hall Bombay.

Neena (Shah) Mehta came from a business family from Baroda who were settled in Bombay. Neena studied in Wilson College Bombay. There she participated in and had won the inter-college competition of singing four times in a row. She made her debut on radio program Ovaltine Phulwari, a weekly singing contest show, anchored by Ameen Sayani. The Ovaltine Phulwari later became Cadbury Phulwari. To pursue her passion of singing further she had started learning music under Ustad Hafiz Ahmed Khan, who was from Delhi.

By the time she met Rajendra she was already in singing of Gujarati Sugam Sangeet and Classical music. She had two brothers and a sister who are all artistes in their field except that her sister was a ‘fine-art’ artist. When Hafiz Ahmed Khan Saab got transferred from Bombay to Delhi she learnt under Govind Prasad Jaipurwale and Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan Saheb. It was Ustad Hafiz Ahmed Khan at AIR who asked Neena to record a ghazal with Rajendra at AIR. And from there the beautiful musical journey of Neena – Rajendra Mehta started together which turned into an everlasting relationship further. When Neena met Rajendra she did not have proficiency in the Urdu language, but their love helped her to get over this challenge too.

The Mehtas set a bench mark for them and never compromised on the standard of poetry. For them poetry came first, poets second. They sang most of Sudarshan Fakir, Bashir Badr, Sardar Anjum, Rajesh Reddy, and also of Shakeb Banarasi, Kumar Shailendra, Mumtaz Rashid, Kaifi Azmi, Jan Nisar Akhtar and Qateel Shifai. They excelled in singing romantic duets. They selected simple, meaningful poetry and romantic ghazals. Their concerts carry the traditional set-up with simple orchestra and set of musicians. Instruments like saxophone, oboe, violin, flute, tabla, dholak, electric guitar, were used in most of their concerts. In one of the interviews of Neena Rajendra Mehta available on YouTube, Rajendra Mehta mentions that they ensure that ‘koi bhi saaz ghazal ko pareshaan na kare, poetry ko disturb naa kare’. So, good poetry was always their first criteria. Rajendra Mehta often used to recite the couplets (sher’s) by Urdu poets in their concerts which added to the dignity of their concerts a lot.

The Mehtas maintained a low profile and they limited themselves to TV programs and musical concerts only. If you watch the interview of Neena & Rajendra Mehta on YouTube one can see how down to earth and simple this couple was. He speaks with full of gratitude for everything, the good things happened to him, the success, the failures, and also for the entire struggle he had gone through in his life.

(This interview is taken after completion of his sixty years. So, I guess this must be around 1994-1995).

In this interview he also expressed his pain on the commercialization of the presentation of ghazals taking over the traditional ghazal concerts and though they had to compromise in initial phase of their careers they later restricted themselves to their principles for appearing for public performances.

In this regard he mentions the following.

“Jab aap sab kuchh ban’ne ki koshish karenge to phir aap kuchh bhi nahin kar paayenge”

 On maintaining the purity and sanctity of ghazals he mentions,

‘tere gham ko teri chaahat ki tarah rakkha hai, is amaanat ko  amaanat ki tarah rakkha hai, apni ghazalon ko bachaaya hai tamaashon se bahot, hamne is fann ko ibaadat ki tarah rakkha hai’

 On the limited success they got in their life Rajendra Mehta quotes the following in his interview.

“Shohratein har ek ke muqaddar mein kahaan hoti hain,”
“Tum ye har roz naya bhes badalte kyun ho”
– (Wali Aasi)

Rajendra Mehta’s had sung very few songs in films and later on he never went on for film singing further and neither Neena Mehta sung any film song ever. The first record (by HMV) for a non-film song of Rajendra Mehta was under the music direction of Yunus Malik ji in 1964 where he sang two ghazals. This was followed by his voice in two songs of the movie ‘Shaheed’ (1965). Later came another untitled album on HMV where he sang four ghazals composed by Jagjit Singh. The first joint record (on Polydor) of Neena Rajendra Mehta came in 1973 where they sung Punjabi songs composed by Surinder Singh. In 1977 their album ‘Nazrana’ was released on Philips records where they recite the lyricist Kaifi Azmi’s creations which were composed by Govind Prasad (Jaipurwale). In 1980 their album ‘Humsafar’ (Ghazals and Geets) was released on Polydor records which included the famous “Taajmahal Mein Aa Jaanaa” penned by Prem Warbartani. And later followed albums like ‘Rahi Pyaar Ke’ (1981)(Polydor), ‘An evening with. . .’ (1982) (Music India), ‘The Best of Musical Mehtas’ (1982) (Music India), ‘Naghmagar’ (1983), ‘A Live Concert’ (1984), ‘Rubaru’ (LP in 1986 & CD in 1991), ‘Aashiq-e-Ghazal’ (1990) all by Music India Ltd, and others. Going by the information available on discogs ‘Aashiq-e-Ghazal’ seems to be among their last albums released. Also there is one album to their credits in Gujarati titled ‘Prem Ni Bhakti’ (1972-Polydor) where music was composed by Purshottam Upadhyay. In between Rajendra Mehta sang a song for the movie ‘Parinay’ (1974) and for ‘Ghamandee’ (1980). The Mehta’s toured the world a lot and even performed in countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan. They were a regular fixture at the annual ghazal extravaganza – ‘Khazaana’ organized by Music India Limited.

• Suna hai maine ye jab se (Prem Warbartani)
• Alvida alvida alvida (Kumar Shailendra)

The Mehtas had a son Neeraj and a daughter Neera. Unfortunately they lost their daughter in 2008. Their son Neeraj is a well-known cinematographer based abroad. Neeraj have many international awards to his credit.

Neena Mehta passed away in 2013 and Rajendra Mehta followed her in 2019. That brought the curtain down on their worldly lives only to remain forever in the memories of many of their fans and ghazal connoisseurs.

Today I present a geet sung by this lovely couple of singers i.e. Rajendra Mehta and Neena Mehta which appeared in the movie ‘Yahaan Wahaan’ (1984).

The film was directed by for Rajat Rakshit. Usman Khan was the producer of this movie. It had Farooque Shaikh, debutant Surinder Kaur, Jagdeep, Aruna Irani, Deena Pathak, Col. Rajbharti, Piloo Wadia, Shabnam Kapoor, Rajesh Puri, Ghanshyam Tilawat, Chetan Ladiwala, Jagdish Chowdhary, Mahendra, Biloo Singh, Moiuuddin, Jawahar, Rumana, Munna, Naresh Kelwan, Naresh Sharma, Anoop Mishra and others. Rajendra and Nina Mehta had a friendly appearance in this movie. Story of this movie was written by Mohsin Warsi. Rajat Rakshit who directed this movie also wrote the screenplay. Editing of this movie was done by Waman Rao. This movie has five songs penned by Indeevar and music was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. Suresh Wadkar, Alka Yagnik, Rajendra and Nina Mehta were the singers of the songs in this movie.

The lyricist of the today’s song Prem Warbartani was a renowned Urdu poet. He also wrote lyrics for Hindi films, however he could not get himself adjusted to the schemes in the business of Hindi Film Industry and left it forever and shifted to Chandigarh.

Prem Warbartani was born on 9^th Novemnber’1930 at Dinga (District Gujarat, now in Pakistan). This place Dinga is associated with the legend of Sohni-Mahiwal. Prem Warbartani was a non-traditional Urdu poet who also wrote in Punjabi and wrote for many Hindi films too. Going by the details available it seems that ‘Yeh Basti Yeh Log’ (1960 – unreleased) was the first Hindi films where he wrote lyrics. However this film was shelved and remains unreleased. From the information available so far the next movie in the filmography of lyricist Prem Warbartani is ‘Mall Road’ (1962) and there were more movies where his lyrics appeared and they are ‘Gul-e-Bakawali’ (1963), ‘Ek Din Ka Baadshaah’ (1964), ‘Haqdaar’ (1964), ‘Faisla’ (1965), ‘Son of Hatimtai’ (1965), ‘Teen Sardar’ (1965), ‘Jaadoo’ (1966), ‘Dil Ne Pukara’ (1967), ‘Teri Talash Mein’ (1968), ‘Aatma Aur Parmaatma’ (1981), ‘Film Hi Film’ (1983) and ‘Yahaan Wahaan’ (1984).

His ghazals appeared in three albums of Jagjit Singh viz. ‘A Sound Affair’ (1985), ‘Passions’ (1987) and ‘Jagjit & Chitra Singh In Concert’ (1988).

I could not find much information about Prem Warbartani about his early life and his journey into poetry and Hindi films and later his exit from Hindi films. However, we can sum up his life philosophy in his words as explained below;

apne jeene ki adaa bhi hai anokhee sab se,
apne marne kaa bhi andaaz niraalaa hogaa

 and

 bahut muktsar saa taaruf hai mera
na josh-e-junoon hoon na raaz-e-neha hoon
kitaabon mein mujhko kahaan dhoondhte ho
main chehron pe likhi huyi daastaan hoon

His poetic creations mainly came from reflections on his own life experiences, circumstances and struggles he had gone through his life.

In the later years (in seventies), after coming back from Bombay, he was staying in a rented one BHK accommodation in sector-8 at Chandigarh. At Chandigarh he used to participate in almost all mushaairaas held around. People would get lost into heavenly spirit when he used to recite his poetry on the stage. As told by Rajendra Chand in his memories about this poet – “His verses seemed to be coming straight from the heaven and touching to the heart of the listeners, whenever he read his poetry”. However his habit of alcohol and frustration got him disillusioned with this world. He also took to other drugs a lot. Under intoxication he would often misbehaved at home with his wife. His wife was the sister of Desh Prem Azad (the famous cricket coach who mentored Kapil Dev). She was a good soul and dedicated her life to her husband. She also learnt Urdu to read and understand the poetry of her husband. Prem Warbartani’s friends tried a lot to convince him to leave alcohol and drugs, and bring him back to normal life, but it had no effect on him. His disciples included peoples like Ved Diwaana, Manohar Lal Singh Ahuja Pareshan. Finally on 10^th October’1979 Prem Warbartani left this world.

Prem Warbartani’s collection of poems is published in Urdu (‘Khushboo Ka Khwaab’, ‘Mera Funn Mera Lahoo’ & ‘Mere Andar Ek Samandar’) and in Punjabi (‘Laal Khambhan Da Ghar’).

Now coming to the today’s movie, from what I have read on the sources this seems to be a light hearted comedy movie like the other movies of actor Farooque Shaikh. I have not watched this movie so I can’t say much about it here in this article for now. However, I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its’ songs. The today’s song is the first song appearing in this movie. From the video of this song it can be easily guessed that the video is from one of their live performances and it has been added in the film.

Today I am back with a song from the ‘1963’ movie ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan’. In the past, I had presented three songs from this movie on the blog. That is sufficient to explain how much I like the songs of this movie.

I got to watch this movie during my growing up years in the mid-seventies or before end of the seventies. There used to be a weekly screening of movies at our ‘colony club’ where we were residing at that time. So I got to watch many movies of the ‘black & white’ era and many mythological and devotional movies too. ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan’ is one of them. I forgot about the movie but its’ title song and couple of other songs stayed in my memory. Many years later when I became associated with this blog it was time again for me to revisit the songs of this movie. It was during this process that I became aware of other songs of this movie that I had forgotten. I have written in detail about this in my earlier posts while presenting other songs from this movie, hence I will not repeat that here.

I fondly remember this movie mainly because of its songs. However, when I checked the ‘annual list of Binaca Geetmala’ of that year I was surprised to note that none of the songs from this movie made it to this list. But then we can easily guess that the competition was tough during this ‘melodious’ decade of music of Hindi Cinema. And in thi particular year ‘1963’, there were movies like ‘Bandini’, ‘Dil Ek Mandir’, ‘Dil Hi To Hai’, ‘Ek Dil Sau Afsaane’, ‘Gehraa Daag’, ‘Gumraah’, ‘Hamraahi’, ‘Mere Mehboob’, ‘Meri Soorat Teri Aankhen’, ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’, ‘Parasmani’, ‘Phir Wohi Dil Laaya Hoon’, ‘Sehra’, ‘Shikaari’, ‘Tere Ghar Ke Saamne’, ‘Taaj-Mahal’ etc and many of them had compositions created by the ‘greats’ of Hindi Film Music. The top three songs from this year were ‘jo waada kiya wo nibhaana padega’ from ‘Taj Mahal’, ‘dil ek mandir hai’ title song, and ‘in hawaaon mein in fizaaon mein’ from ‘Gumraah’ on rank 1, 2 & 3 respectively.

There were total ‘89’ movies released during this year. The overall average of movies released per year during this decade 1961-1970 was 94.2 films per year (considering the number of released movies i.e. 942 movies).

Out of these eighty-nine movies following were the movies falling in the category of mythological-devotional movies.

‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan-1963’ was directed by Babubhai Mistry for ‘Roopkalaa Pictures’. It was produced by Mahipatray Shah. It had Anita Guha, Mahipal, with Ramsingh, Krishnakumari, Kummo Tripathi, and Raja Nene. They were supported by Ratnamala, T.N. Sinha, Prakash, Yunus Parwez, Mridula, Punam Kapoor, Baijnath, Ajit, Rehana, Uma Dutt, R.S. Dube, Munshi, Shekhar, Chand, Devchand, Lal Bahadur, Kishore, Dilawar Khan, Baby Chand, Burhan, Jugal Kishore, Dinanath, Vijay Kumar and Master Aziz.

The story of this movie was written by Vishwanath Pande, C.K. Mast, Pandit Madhur, and S.M. Abbas. Editing of this movie was done by Ramchandra Mahadik.

‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwan-1963’ had nine songs, all written by Pandit Bharat Vyas. The music was composed by Pandit Shivaram. Mahendra Kapoor, Manna Dey, Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur had given their voices to the songs in this movie. So far, seven songs from this movie have already been posted on the blog. The last song was posted on more than a year ago on 16.02.2023. The today’s song was noted by me then only and it is lying ready since then with us. Today’s song is the penultimate song from this movie and I hope to take this movie to ‘Yippee-land’ soon …

The song under discussion takes placehappens at the climax of the movie where the hero of the movie proves that ‘god’ exists everywhere. And the upper-caste people who believe in ‘casteism’ and practice ‘untouchability’ realise their mistake of prohibiting lower caste people from entering the temples.

Mahipal lip-syncs the song in the voice of Mahendra Kapoor. Anita Guha and many others join him in the chorus. Many other artists are also visible in the picturisation of this song.

In the year 1963 actor Mahipal appeared in movies like ‘Dev Kanya’, ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan’, ‘Maaya Mahal’, ‘Naag Jyoti’, ‘Naag Mohini’, ‘Parasmani’, ‘Sunehri Nagin’. Anita Guha was his co-actress’ in three movies viz. ‘Dev Kanya’, ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan’ and ‘Naag Jyoti’ and actress Helen was his co-star in Maaya Mahal and Sunehri Nagin. I would once again like to mention here that I have always loved to watch movies of actor Mahipal. Navrang-1959’ is my most favorite movie of them all.

Today’s song is from the ‘1977’ movie ‘Qasam Khoon Ki’ or ‘Kasam Khoon Ki’. This song stood at no. 37 in the ‘annual Binaca Geetmala’ of the year ‘1977’. That is the reason for this post here

Though this song figured in the Binaca geetmala final, I have no recollections of either the movie or this song. The other reason for ‘liking’the song is its lyrics that talks of bringing down the soaring price of gold. . I have no idea if the suggestion made in this song can be used to bring down the price of gold. The main customer of gold, viz women too are unlikely to take the suggestion contained in the song any serious thought.

“Qasam Khoon Ki-1977” was directed by Ashok Roy for ‘Tirupati Pictures, Bombay’. It was produced by Prasan Kapoor (Jeetendra’s brother). It had Jeetendra, Sulakshana Pandit, Asrani, Farida Jalal, Aruna Irani, Nirupa Roy, Prem Chopra, Om Shivpuri, Sujit Kumar, Tarun Ghosh, Asit Sen, Sarla Yewlekar, Murad, Shetty, Vikas Anand, Jankidas, Maruti, Kundan, Raj Kishore, Dilip Dutt, Madhu Chauhan, Vinod Sharma, Master Raju Desai, Master Raju, Baby Rani and others. Madan Puri, Roopesh Kumar, Shakti Kapoor, and Amjad Khan had a friendly appearance in this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 07.09.1977.

Story of this movie was written by K.A. Narayan and dialogues were written by Charandas Shokh. Screenplay was shared by Tarun Ghosh and Charandas Shokh. Editing of this movie was done by Waman Bhonsle and Gurudutt Shirali.

Here is the plot of the movie which is taken partly from ‘Wikipedia Page’ of this movie and added inputs from me with correction wherever wrong information is shared on ‘Wikipedia’. (I have also added the actor’s names with their respective character names in the movie)…

Seth Dwarkadas (Om Shivpuri) is a rich, well known, and respected. But no one knew the real Seth Dwarkadas; his ‘business’ is ‘trafficking of women’. One day, his wife Shanti (Nirupa Roy) discovers this and leaves the house with her children who later grow up as Kishan (Jeetendra) and Ganga (Farida Jalal).

After twenty years, Kishan needs Rs.25, 000/- in less than six months to get his sister married to the son of Seth Dharamdas (Jankidas) who demands this amount for his son’s higher studies. Seth Dharamdas puts this condition for the earlier decided marriage now posing a threat to the marriage. Kishan decides to re-locate to Bombay to his friend Gafoor Mistry (Asrani) to try and earn the money. Gafoor is running a ‘motor garage’. Kishan tries different jobs including doing stunts for movies to accumulate the money. Once Kishan rescues a young woman named Radha (Sulakshana Pandit) from hoodlums and learns from her that her cop brother, Laxman (Sujit Kumar), is imprisoned for a murder he did not commit, and is to be hanged soon. Kishan decides to help her brother…

“Aap itminaan rakhiye, agar kisi beqasoor ko phaansi ke tqkhtepar chadhha diya gayaa to ye aap ke saath hi nahin, insaaf ke saath bi zulm hogaa” (I guess this should be the best dialogue of this movie otherwise  )

In order to do this, he gets himself arrested and imprisoned in the same jail as Laxman. Hearing from Laxman about ‘how it all happened’ he gets to know that the main connection to this is a hotel ‘‘Moonlight Club” and the ‘activities’ going there. Laxman told him that he was sure that a big ‘gang’ was operating there and involved in smuggling and other anti-social acts. Our ‘smart hero’ Kishan further finds out that a goon Bajirao (Amjad Khan) is a womaniser and involved in luring girls and working for Prem (Prem Chopra). Prem is the ‘right hand’ of the boss of this gang who is none other than Kishan’s father Seth Dwarkadas (Om Shivpuri).
Kishan gets hold of Bajirao through a ‘trap’ where Radha helps him in this plan and Bajirao’s admitting of the crime is get recorded and police arrests him thus freeing Laxman from the jail.
When everything seems to be getting on the right track, one day, Kishan gets a ‘telegram’ from his mother Shanti to reach ‘gaaon-ghar’ immediately. On reaching home Kishan gets to know that his sister Ganga has left the home as she has find the ‘right’ person with whom she will settle her life together. But Ganga is cheated in love by Prem who rapes her to force her into the ‘flesh-trade’. Kishan finds his sister in the brothel and in this process is helped by Poonam whom Kishan affirms as ‘sister’. However, on seeing her brother Kishan, Ganga tries to run away as she has become ‘apavitra’ now and in the process throws herself down from a high-rise building and dying on the spot. It is here that Kishan vows for revenge ‘main apni is maasoom bahan ke khoon ki kasam khaa kar kehtaa hoon ke uss khooni ko meri bahan ke khoon ke ek ek katre ka hisaab dena hogaa’… With usual twists and turns finally the movie ends with Prem getting killed the same away as Ganga was and Seth Dwarkadas sacrifices his life to save Kishan from Prem, but not before taking a ‘Kasam Khoon Ki’ from his wife Shanti … what is that?… Watch the movie to know this and to enjoy the ‘cinema of the seventies’.

“Qasam Khoon Ki-1977” has six songs (including one two part song). Five songs were written by Verma Malik and one song was penned by Anjaan.

Music for this movie was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji (assisted by Babla, Frank Fernand and Anil Mohile). Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mahendra Kapoor, Mohd Rafi, Sulakshana Pandit and Kanchan were the playback singers for the songs in this movie.

I was wondering how this song got popular enough to appear in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ as we have seen that many times many songs missed this ‘coveted’ list. I do not remember reading about this movie and this movie does not figure in the list of successful movies. It does not even feature in the top fifty movies of that year. May be people liked the ‘alternative’ suggested by the lady in this song, temporarily though, because the gold prices nevertheless kept rising and rising over the years. Out of curiosity I checked the prices of gold for that year. 10 gms Gold was and at Rs.486.00. That is less than a ‘Regular Popcorn Combo’ price that one gets at the theatre nowadays.

Here are the comparative gold prices for the decades passed after this movie was released.

(I am not going deeper into this subject since I do not think I am as expert as my ‘wife’ is, when it comes to gold and its prices. ).

That is why I am always in awe of people and particularly ‘males’ who deal in gold ‘confidently’, even when, they accompany their wives or even without being accompanied by them. I remember, once, when I was posted at Phulpur-Allahabad and I had to accompany my boss to buy a gift for a ‘client’s daughter marriage’ how he was bargaining and he had knowledge about the minutest details of gold. I think it is just ‘matter of ones’ interest’. I am less interested and so very shy when dealing about ‘gold’. Experts can definitely throw more light on this – GOLD.

Today I am presenting a song from the ‘1977’ movie ‘Paheli’. The movie is mostly known for its only well-known song ‘vrishti pade tapor tupur’.

This movie had six songs in it but the other songs are rarely played on radio. I had also never listened to the other songs from this movie till a few months back when I specifically searched for the other songs and listened to them. I noted that there are some good songs in this movie. That should not come as a surprise, seeing that the music for this movie was composed by Ravindra Jain. Listening to the other songs of this movie will take readers back down memory lane to the era of 1970s where we had movies made on the background of village that were replete with lovely hummable songs.

“Paheli-1977” was directed by Prashant Nanda for ‘Rajshri Pictures, Bombay’. It had Satyajeet, Namita Chandra (debutant), Poornima Jayram (debutant), Durga Khote, A.K. Hangal, Dina Pathak, Leela Mishra, Nitin Sethi, Abha Dhulia, and Arun Govil (also a debutant) and others. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 17.11.1977.

As mentioned above “Paheli-1977” has six songs which were all written by Ravindra Jain who also composed the music. Singer Suresh Wadkar made his singing debut with this movie. The other singers for this movie included Hemlata and Chandrani Mukherji. Suresh Wadkar had sung one solo song, two duet songs with Hemlata, and one song with Hemlata and Chandrani Mukherji. Hemlata’s voice appears in five songs of this movie and the voice of Chandrani Mukherji is used in two songs.

One duet song sung by Hemlata and Chandrani Mukherji was posted on the blog on 21.09.2022 which is ‘Kaanhaa ki zidd par naachegi Raadha’. This was the second song from this movie to appear on the blog after passage of full ten-years after this movie had made its debut on the blog on 21.09.2012. The first song, to be posted on the blog in 2012 was unsursrisingly the most popular song from the movie viz. ‘vrishti pade tapor tupur’ – a duet song sung by Suresh Wadkar and Hemlata. Suresh Wadkar and Hemlata have sung one more duet song in this movie. Today I am presenting this duet song on the blog. This song is a ‘missing the beloved’ category song picturised on Satyajeet and Namita Chandra. It is a nice song picturised on scenic location (possibly a village).

I have not watched this movie and it seems to be unavailable on the online platform. I would request knowledgeable readers who have watched this movie to throw light on this movie and its songs. Atul ji had watched this movie but he found it a letdown as he had high hopes on it as he had earlier found himself getting bowled over by “Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye” (1977) from‘Rajshri’ .

Today I am presenting a song, which for me falls under the category of ‘nostalgic songs’ and ‘songs that brings back memories’. It is also among the ‘most awaited songs’ which I wish to see here on the blog.

This song is from the movie ‘Taraana-1979’. It was directed by Deepak Bahri for ‘Chanda Pictures’. It was presented by Rajshri Productions and produced by Tarachand Barjatya.

‘Taraana-1979’ had Ranjeeta, Mithun Chakraborty, Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Urmila Bhatt, Jayshree T., Sharat Saxena, and Om Shivpuri. They were supported by Yunus Parvez, Janki Das, Sundar, Bhagwan, Shakeel, Satyabhan Sinha, Naresh, Pardesi, Master Sandeep, Shobha Khote, Mala Jaggi, Uma Khosla, and Jagdeep. The story, screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Khalid & Narvi. Editing of this film was done by Mukhtar Ahmed.

This movie has as many as twelve songs. Lyricists Ravindra Rawal and Tilakraj Thapar penned six songs each. Usha Mangeshkar, Shailendra Singh, Aarti Mukherjee, Jagjit Singh, Dilraj Kaur, Chetan and Varsha Bhonsle had given their voices to the songs in this movie. Music for this movie was composed by Raamlaxman.

I had not watched this movie until recently. I watched it on an ‘online platform’ just a week ago. It is a nice movie to watch. This movie has some very good songs as was usually the case for movies coming from ‘Rajshri Productions’. One song of this movie that got very popular was ‘Sultana Sultana mera naam hai Sultana’. This song figured in the annual programme of Binaca Geetmala of ‘1980’ at fifteenth position. Another song from this movie ‘ham tum dono saath mein bheeg jaayenge barsaat mein’ was another popular song. Both theese songs have been posted on the blog in the past.

The song that I personally associated with this movie is a different song, viz the song that I am presenting today.

‘1979’ was the year of movies like (alphabetically) ‘Aatish’, ‘Amar Deep’, ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’, ‘Bin Phere Hum Tere’, ‘Chambal Ki Qasam’, ‘Duniyaa Meri Jeb Mein’, ‘Gautam Govinda’, ‘Ghar Ki Laaj’, ‘Golmaal’, ‘The Great Gambler’, ‘Jaani Dushman’, ‘Jhoothha Kahin Ka’, ‘Kaalaa Patthar’, ‘Lok Parlok’, ‘Manzil’, ‘Mr Natwarlal’, ‘Naukar’, ‘Noori’, ‘Saanch Ko Aanch Nahin’, ‘Saawan Ko Aane Do’, ‘Sargam’, ‘Suhaag’, ‘Surakshaa’, ‘Taraanaa’ etc. We can see that many of these movies were great ‘musical’ movies too.

Trying to recollect now I vividly remember to have watched movies like ‘Aatish’, ‘Ghar Ki Laaj’, ‘The Great Gambler’, ‘Jhoothha Kahin Ka’, ‘Kaalaa Patthar’, ‘Mr Natwarlal’, ‘Naukar’ and ‘Suhaag’ with parents or either we brothers & cousins watched them in vacations.

‘Jaani Dushman’ was the movie that I watched alone after ‘getting’ a ‘special treatment’ from my Father when in the first try I could not get tickets for it and my Father did not want me to take my younger brothers and cousins to watch this movie. (I have already mentioned this special story while presenting the songs from the movie on the blog) The movies that I didn’t get to watch then and watched in later years are movies like ‘Amar Deep’, ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’, ‘Golmaal’, ‘Manzil’, ‘Noori’, ‘Saawan Ko Aane Do’, ‘Sargam’, and recently I watched this movie ‘Taraanaa’.

As mentioned above this movie ‘Taraana’ has twelve songs in it. The other movie coming from Rajshri Productions that year in ‘1979’ has ten songs and all of them have been covered on the blog. Out of the twelve songs the movie ‘Taraana’ has, the voice of singer Shailendra Singh featured in seven songs. I am sure this must be the highest number of songs in one movie that Shailendra Singh got to sing.

Today I present the third song from the movie ‘Taraana’ which happens in the movie when Shyam (Mithun Chakraborty), after a love at first sight case, follows Radha (Ranjeeta) to her camp (where the ‘Gypsys’ are camping) to have a ‘promise’ from Radha to meet him near ‘nadi ki upar waali pahaadi par’ at ‘shaam ke chhah baje’ (which also gives us a beautiful location either in Kashmir (?) or Himachal valley (?) for this song). Shyam is waiting for Radha and she takes some more time to come he breaks into singing this lovely song … More on ‘Taraana-1979’ in future posts.

Lyrics for this song were sent by Prakash ji a few years back. He wished to get this song posted on the birthday of singer Shailendra Singh, but then we don’t have to worry about it because we have many more from the singer yet to come on the blog.
